Haissem is a melodic black metal band started by Ukrainian musician and vocalist Andrey Tollock in Donetsk in 2014. With him working as the sole performer, Haissem released albums in 2016 (Maze of Perverted Fantasies), 2018 (Panacea for a Cursed Race), and 2019 (Demonotone), as well as a pair of EPs in 2017 and 2019. Over the course of those releases, Haissem’s creativity has expanded from a stylistic affinity for melodic black metal rooted in the ’90s into music of greater variety and more diverse stylistic influence.

Haissem’s newest output is an album named Kuhaghan Tyyn (which means “The Evil Spirit”) that will be released by the band’s new label Satanath Records on March 22nd. As compared to previous records, this one includes a greater use of synthesizers (though they are still subtle) as well as guest performers on specific tracks, including female vocalist Alyona Malytsa, harpist D. Vander, and cellist Alexandra Zima — the latter of whom makes an appearance on the song we’re premiering today , “Black Tide Dominion“.

This new song is one of substantial length — 10 1/2 minutes — and it’s quite a riveting experience throughout.

At the beginning, ringing guitar notes backed by a haze of ambient sound lead into a storm-front of clobbering drums, thundering bass, and a second guitar melody that complements the first. That surge of power is both entrancing and bracing, especially when Tollock’s incendiary shrieks break out. From there, the guitar performances continue to provide the enthralling heart of the music, with soulful leads rising above the sweeping keyboard layer and the plundering percussion. When the storming subsides, the bass rises to prominence, backed by rippling guitar notes.

There are moments when the music races and the guitars dart and flicker, and others when the bass and drums lock into head-moving cadences, and the clear, fluid guitar melodies gleam and glitter, and still others when the shrieking is replaced with singing, and the melody gloriously soars,

In all its ebbing and flowing of power, through almost all the variations in rhythm and mood, the song really seems like an extended guitar tour de force, almost like a long and remarkably varied and vibrant solo. But in the final minutes the rhythm section falls silent and the music becomes somber, introspective, and sorrowful. There, Tollock’s emotionally nuanced singing voice plays the central role, accompanied only by acoustic guitar and the melancholy tones of Alexandra Zima‘s cello.

The striking cover art for Kuhaghan Tyyn was created by Mary Kankava (Hellcatfairyart). Satanath Records will release it on CD and digitally. Along with the pre-order links and a stream of this moving new song, we’re also streaming the previously released track “Aokigahara” (a free download at Bandcamp).

Sin duda, mi corte favorito es ‘Кuhаҕан Тыын‘.

Haissem  are  a  solo  project  from  Ukraine  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  on this  recording  plays  a  very  melodic  and  progressive  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2020  album  "Kuhaghan  Tyyn"  which  was  released  by  Satanath  Records.

Clean  playing  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into  more  of  a  melodic  and  heavier  direction  while  all  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  adding  in  a  great  amount  of  melody.

A  lot  of  the  music  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  Swedish  style  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  progressive  sounding  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats.

Melodic  vocals  are  also  added  into  some  parts  of  the  recording  as  well  as  some  atmospheric  sounding  synths  also  being  utilized  at  times.  Orchestral  elements  and  folk  instruments  can  also  be  heard  briefly  along  with  one  track  also  bringing  spoken  word  parts  onto  the  recording.

The  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts,  when  tremolo  picking  is  utilized  it  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling  and  towards  the  end  a  brief  use  of  female  vocals  can  also  be  heard.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  a  mixture  of  English  and  Ukrainian  and  cover  dark  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Haissem  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  melodic  and  progressive  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.

The Ukrainian musician Andrey Tollock should have noted labels like Nuclear Blast, Season of Mist, Candelight, Osmose and Metal Blade knocking his door down to have Haissem on their roster. When you hear his new effort “Kuhaghan Tyyn” you’ll realize this is not a statement made lightly. Since 2016 he has created profound, eclectic black metal comparing with many prolific, accomplished bands, having released four full-lengths and two EPs with Haissem and one full length with his project Chameleon Waters. Haissem’s latest “Kuhaghan Tyyn” is nothing short of epic storytelling, tales of heroic legends comparable to the classical legends of King Arthur and Beowulf. “Black Tide Dominion” takes you on an odyssey in which you’ll visit exotic, faraway lands and meet heroes and villains you hadn’t thought could be devised by human minds. Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Hungary and Romania have legends and folklore of their own, dating back many centuries. Coming from that part of the world Tollock would naturally spawn trailblazing albums reflecting the tales of his ancestors. “Kuhaghan Tyyn” is not only epic but timeless and unbounded by nationality, and can enrapture you whether you’re into black metal, melodic death metal, symphonic metal or traditional heavy metal from any country. Some of the bands I was reminded of were Moonspell, Amon Amarth, Enslaved, Deceased, Ancient, Dissection, Borknagar and Ihsahn. The songs comprising the legend of “Kuhaghan Tyyn” are as narrative musically as they are lyrically. Featuring just enough rawness and atmosphere, they have crafty, finespun traces skillfully added, as if stories within stories are buried deep within this legend. I’m stunned by Tollock’s drive to try new things and how well he’s able to experiment with new methods of broadcasting his influences through his songwriting. There’s musicianship you haven’t heard much from other bands, no matter how intently you have to search for it. Even more impressive were the arrangements of fry scream and melodic vocals, especially the female vocals suddenly appearing in “Кuhаҕан Тыын.” This is a project you’ll want to listen to countless times and whose past releases you’ll likewise want to seek out.

Do you believe God’s rage is the scariest thing to sense?

Ukrainalaisen Andrey V. Tollockin luotsaama Haissem on edennyt järjestyksessään jo kuudenteen julkaisuunsa.

Как говорят англичане, "only for completionists".

The Ukrainian one-man-project Haissem belongs to a very special fringe group of dark and evil music, (very) melodic and progressive Black Metal. The production of this record is very clear and powerful which makes a lot of fun to listen. Every instrument is perfect audible.

The music has its root in the Swedish style and sometimes reminds me of Edge of Sanity. The bass guitar supports wonderful with its own melodies. Here and there are keyboards which vary between Dimmu Borgir and classic progressive Rock, just to spice everything up a little. Although the tracks have a solid length they never get boring. The vocals have a range from high pitched Black Metal screaming to deep clean singing and the switching between English and Ukrainian makes the songs even more interesting.

It is very pleasant to listen to this record and its huge amount of melodies.

Melodic Black Metal.

Dark metal.

Teeming with acidic vocal fury and scathing melodic riffs, the essence of Kuhaghan Tyyn wafts through the labyrinthine halls of a derelict speakeasy to greet imbibers with scorn. Haissem, the wrought iron cauldron of Andrey Tollock, crafts a cryptic brew of evil incantations brimming with intoxicating ingredients, ranging from mellow cello outros and angelic vocals to masterful guitar pours.

Kuhaghan Tyyn forges contrast from its nascent moments: hollow guitar notes play solitaire on an empty wooden bar before crushing medieval lore and ungodly howls sit down at the table in a full-fledged saloon. Unyielding lead licks rifle through opening track “Black Tide Dominion” and check-raise Andrey’s vocals until the latter goes all in, decisively matching the guitar’s confidence and taking the bloated pot. Epic arena rock power chords palm mute a transition mid-song, trading black metal roulette for an ominous cello-ridden busted ballad. Only 11 minutes into the album, Haissem has already toured us around the ghost-town casino that is to be our confinement.

Standout track, “Aokigahara,” blasts ahead with tasting notes of Dark Funeral, yet quickly abandons the traditional black metal blackjack table. Experimental orchestral passages behind deviously shredded licks splash between Emperor and solo-Ihsahn, while pointed, entwining riffs balance vocal pitch with the precision of Death‘s more progressive, dexterous dealings. Confident, guitar-forward solos harken to melo-death made famous by the Göteburg scene while buzzed voodoo verses borrow from the many progenitors of American Heavy Metal (Burn the Priest‘s debut album or early Tool). Ungodly shrieks fold against a straight of heavenly orchestral strings, all while blast-beaten mayhem holds a full house in rapt attention.

Returning to black metal roots, second track “Arcanum” crushes dreams with boozy power chords from the taps of hell. Meandering riffs soon follow, regulating the undulating growls just as the cooling copper coil of a still chills the Devil’s elixir. Throaty spoken-word tempers everclear palm-muted riffs, and infuses Ihsahn-inspired herbs and spices just as the batch is ready for bottling. Soon the inceptive pace returns to soak backing symphonic passages with besotted spite, and eerie synthetic notes sink the listener further into oblivion. The whiff of choral backing vocals foreshadows their enhanced presence on final track, “Кuhаҕан Тыын.” Female vocalist Alyona Malytsa climbs soaring ethereal scales in conjunction with harsh growls in the throes of melodic riffage. This magnum opus condenses an entire galaxy of hopped-up aggression and potent spirit into an epic black hole, with a prolonged silence that ages the panicked chanting, and with brass-knuckle closing chord bashing (ala Tool‘s Aenima). After the dust settles, a revitalized riff barrels ahead with a dazzling solo that enshrines Kuhaghan Tynn on the top shelf in the medieval cellar of blackened greatness.

Haissem, the one-man distiller of evil from Ukraine, has explored the entirety of heavy metal’s ancient compound, specifically catering to its caged, inebriated black metal beast. Blending dense, blast-beaten sections of blackened chaos with celestial solos and saturated riffs, Kuhaghan Tynn is a soot-infested cosmic cask waiting to be tapped.

Zůstat u tradiční black metalové munice, byli by HAISSEM trhači hlav par excellence s akademickém hábitu, i v takto očesané podobě by s klidem distingovaného gentlemana dokázali bez problému přesvědčit o svých skladatelských a instrumentálních kvalitách.

Do you believe God’s rage is the scariest thing to sense?

Haissem is a one man black metal project by some dude called Andrey Tollock who is also behind the melodic doom metal outfit Sunset Forsaken. Black metal from the Ukraine normally comes with high expectations and it is no different here. Andrey has been a pretty hard-working man over the past few years as he has released five full lengths in as many years. Album number four has been titled “Kuhagan Tyyn” and is a more than solid slab of melodic and symphonic black metal. This album includes only four songs, but with an average length of more than 10 minutes you can expect that there is a lot going on in each of the tracks.

Bright synths lift the music and carry the weight of the lyrics, while the clean and crisp production keeps things sharp. Blast beats keep battering against your skull and atmospheric soundscapes of layered synths are setting the tone. Symphonic elements are responsible for the epic feel and the overall atmosphere. There are moments where piano melodies or female vocals (as counterpart to the classic black metal barkings) define certain song parts, while in other sections the digital string orchestra stays in the background and makes sure to provide a great backbone to the guitar chords and the tremolo runs.

Most of the tracks come along with a very melodic approach, with soaring lead flourishes swirling through each song. In places there is a sinister edge to the soundscape, but also sometimes hints at more “friendly” music cannot be denied. Haissem surely does not provide black metal at its purest and most evil, there are certainly influences from various genres, in particular melodic death metal. The combination of the fantastic guitars and the keyboard provides some ultimately uplifting harmonies, which are constantly pitched against the traditional tremolo runs and blast attacks.

Andrey did not just record an extreme metal album with a lot of technical prowess and put a few orchestral samples on top. While the fast and furious tremolo lines are in full force and often accompanied by heavy hitting blast-beats it feels as if the symphonic details have really been implemented as important factor of each song. Sometimes those elements are used more subtly creating an eerie and melancholic atmosphere in the background while in other sections they are present in a more prominent manner, dominating whole passages. Each of the songs and the album as a whole ebbs and flows in great fashion, giving the listener the impression of being part of an epic journey.

The production is great and pretty much flawless. The sound has enough punch without being too sterile, and the mix is well-balanced with no details being buried. Some might argue that the sound is a bit too modern for an extreme metal record, but I think this kind of music needs such a production. “Kuhagan Tyyn” is an album that has a lot of details to discover, and while I might not be in the mood for something a little bit overblown each day this one is a great addition to the collection.

HAISSEM is a one man black metal band based in Ukraine from the mind of Andrey Tollock, also of the melodic death/doom band SUNSET FORSAKEN.  I reviewed that’s bands latest album, “85 Nerves,” and enjoyed it quite a bit.  Does lighting strike twice?  Yes, yes it does.  With HAISSEM’s fourth full length album, “Kuhaghan Tyyn,” he proves he is adapt at playing black metal as he is doom.

With four tracks and a run time of about 43 minutes, it finds that sweet spot for holding my attention all the way through.  This band is actually rather melodic but still incorporates plenty of raw, furious moments that black metal is known for.   I appreciate the fact that a lot of the more melodic moments come from the guitars.  A lot of melodic black metal sticks to using keyboards to develop an atmosphere, which is fine as many bands can pull it off, but I always enjoy it when the guitars do the talking—the instrument can be just as moving and picture painting as anything else.

The soundscapes within this album can indeed be very emotional,   the melodies pulling the songs in the right direction.  The drums and the blackened screams (and growls) go a long way in counteracting this.  In essence, the album is very well balanced between light and dark elements. “Black Tide Dominion,” opens the album with clean, quiet guitar.  The drums rustle in the background before the melodic leads kick in while the double bass amplifies the overall sound.  Andrey’s vocals just work so well against the grain of the guitars, both acting in one fluid movement.  The bass and drums are a solid foundation that provide low end that doesn’t go overboard on the intensity but instead elevates it all.  The sudden change in tempo, and the included clean vocals, are a nice touch and give the nearly eleven minute song the variety it needs.

The darkness that represents black metal still permeates through the songs, especially in the moments like the beginning of the second track “Arcanum.”  There is a melodic death feel to this song, especially in the faster paced harmonies.  About three fourths through the song, a wall of sound builds up into layers of guitars and a very dense passage of drums, screams, and guitar appears.  As the song slows back down, the darkness returns for a stunning ending.

“Aokigahara,” pains a Gothic picture like a much less spastic CRADLE OF FILTH.  This song is very focused and put together well.  Each section of melody glues the notes from one passage to the next, picking up or slowing down as seeing fit.  This creates a surprisingly dynamic  number with a much faster and heavier final half.  The guitar and bass tones are gritty and sharp, focusing on maximum damage.  Light touches of keys highlight the chaos near the song’s end—very nice touch here.

Call me crazy but “Кuhаҕан Тыын” begins life with a post-metal feel, a more straight forward guitar piece that picks up extra layers and sound as the song builds.  I just love how the melodies ride just beneath the black metal vocals.  This is without a doubt the most epic song on the album as it approaches fourteen minutes in length.  Parts of the song take a more traditional route, focusing on speed and aggression.  But the proggy melodic passage takes the song into a unexpected territory and beautiful clean vocals fill the air.  Whatever you are looking for in a black metal song can probably be found here.  The near blues style guitar towards the end also caught me off guard but I’ll be damned if it doesn’t work.

HAISSEM’s “Kuhaghan Tyyn” is an exceptional melodic black metal album with plenty of dynamics and well written songs for even the most ardent black metal fan to enjoy.

I normally don’t really care too much for band photos but the one from HAISSEM on Metal Archives I really wish I could have undone. I really hope that the music is so much better than the photo because if not this will be hard to get through. Thankfully the music is better than the photo. But I am too sure what I think about it in the end. It is supposed to be black metal and I guess that is what it is but I also get a feeling that there is much more to it than just black metal. And generally I don’t have any issue with that. I feel that it adds to the overall sound if it’s incorporated right. And here it is done nicely. This one is a real keeper.

Haissem is a black metal band from Ukraine. Opening track of the album entitled Black Tide Dominion is already a premise that black metal created by Haissem will be perhaps a full of surprises. First minutes of the song go with a harsh rhythm section, at the same time, the music is enlighten by melodic and doom metal guitar leads which carry sensations such as sorrow. Andrey Tollock (all music) owns dark shrieking vocals, something that can be compared to Shagrath of Dimmu Borgir. There is a very good, atmospheric fragment with clean vocals, which easily could fit somewhere on Opeth album, as well done, piece of avant-garde rock music that involves some beautiful sound of cello.

Arcanum takes me into more progressive black metal that musically is both grim and melodic. Excellent chants, catchy, storming guitar work, sound of harp and drums beats with good timing would long songs of Haissemme lasts forever for me. Music of this band is a black metal with a great flow of emotions and occult elements.

From time to time Haissem injects music with atmospheric keyboards and orchestrations that surround darker and heavier guitar riffs of the band (Aokigahara). When I has started to think that this track will follow more straight forward black metal approach, suddenly clean vocals and some guitar dissonance started to shine upon majesty of this band`s music. Last minutes in song are little more bombastic, harsh and fast too... It`s just something about this album that I think it has not (or very little) a bad musical moments, which is even more amazing if you mind that it`s one man-band (plus 3 guest musicians featuring on this record).

Кuhаҕан Тыын is surely groovy and atmospheric track with some fast and merciless black metal guitars also. In between it all, there is even some 70`s hard rock feel to keyboard sound here, which is great.

I do not think that those female vocals was necessary to feature them in this track, it took sharpness off the song into fragile musical areas, like in many lame doom metal albums in the 90`s I`ve heard... But anyway, the longer I listen to this album, the more I am convinced that Kuhaghan Tyyn is the light and darkness as one, the black metal record that counts for me pretty much this year.

Haissem is an one man band from Ukraine and has been into music since 2016. Since then, Andrey Tollock, the man behind the project, has released five full lengths and two EP albums. Kuhaghan Tyyn is their fourth full length album, released the 22nd of March 2020 by Satanath Records from Russia on digital and in cd form, limited in 500 copies and it contains four compositions of about forty-four minutes of overall duration. This is the first time I listen to Haissem’s music, but I guess the same style applies to all their releases and it is melodic Black Metal with some symphonic, some melancholic or even some gothic elements.

Andrey shows some serious musicianship skills both regarding the composition and the performance of the instruments. The riffing mainly is melodic, with some fast and violent parts and variety concerning the ideas presented. The artist has managed to express his different influences in a very interesting, creative and natural way, so you will find references to melodic, symphonic Black Metal reminding of Old Man’s Child, some melancholic ones reminding of the later Paradise Lost era, some epic ones, some violent reminding the more traditional Scandinavian scene, even some atmospheric gothic rock parts. The compositions become even more unique when the guest musicians add their parts, so you will listen to some very interesting cello and harp parts as also some clean, female vocals. The tracks are long, lasting from ten to fourteen minutes and although the band has done a really good job regarding the structure of the tracks and the presentation of the various ideas, I felt that some good ideas were lost inside the long tracks something that didn’t let me digest them all.

The performance of the instruments is very professional and shows a high level of skills. The impressive thing is that Andrey plays all of them and they are all physical ones, as there is no instrument programmed in the album, not even the drums. The guitars and keyboards are the ruling instruments in the compositions, setting up the atmosphere, the scenery and creating the feelings, flawlessly. Their performance is accurate and passionate, professional, with nice technique and ability to perform different styles in the same level and quality. The drums are played with stability and passion and their lines are not too complex but they support the compositions well and giving them push, the depth or the solid feeling that they need. Unfortunately, the bass is not so distinct in the compositions, so I couldn’t listen to its lines. However, the production does not lack of depth and that warm, bassy sound that fits to the style of the music perfectly, and along with the balanced mixture, they offer a nice result. The vocals are deep and harsh Black Metal vocals in bigger part of the album with some parts where they become clean, melancholic ones reminding a lot of Paradise Lost’s later works, generally they are expressive and fit to the atmosphere and feeling of the music. The lyrics are written in English and they are contained in the cd and they are personal thoughts and questions of the artist about life, state of mind, death.

To sum up, I think Kuhaghan Tyyn is a good album, presenting interesting ideas by a very skilled musician. All tracks have a lot of interesting, passionate and full of feelings moments to offer to the listener. My favorite tracks are Arcanum and Кuhаҕан Тыын. I believe that the fans of Haissem will be really satisfied by this release. If you are a fan of melodic Black Metal with references to various other styles, you will appreciate this album.

Haissem is a solo-outfit by some Andrey V. Tollock, whom you might know from another one-man army too, i.e. Doom-Death project Sunset Forsaken. Haissem however is more productive and diverse, and throughout six years of existence, more than a handful of somewhat differing recordings got released. Amongst those last year’s Kuhaghan Tyyn, available physically via Saint-Peterburg’s Satanath Records. And just FYI: the project did record + release a new album in the meantime, Philosofiend, in a partnership of Satanath Records and Exhumed Records. A review on that new album will surely follow.

But first things first, and that’s Kuhaghan Tyyn. It is the fourth full-length under the Haissem moniker, being written, performed and produced by the project (= Andrey). Recording, mix and mastering were done at the Vetkin Records Studio over a period of a year (late 2018 – late 2019), with additional programming and engineering by Vitaliy Dorofeev (who worked with Sunset Forsaken, as well as, for example, with Eydol, InGrave, DeadShade, Khranitel’ or Kreolis). The CD edition comes in jewel-case version with a four-page booklet, which includes the lyrics (in English) for the four lengthy compositions. The layout was taken care of by label-owner Aleksey Korolyov, with quite cool and intriguing artwork provided via Hellcatfairyart (Mary Kankava; think: Ragnell, Thorns Of Grief, Fucker, Serpent Sermon, Mourner a.o.).

Kuhaghan Tyyn consists of four songs, which do have a total running time of almost forty-four minutes. It means ‘the evil spirit’, by the way. The album starts with Black Tide Dominion, which opens with a short and somewhat Pagan / Folk-inspired acoustic intro. Yet soon, Haissem show what they stand for: atmospheric, bombastic, melodious and timeless Black Metal with an enormous and well-executed technical approach. The material is strongly guitar-oriented, with tremolo leads, solos and guitar-driven melodies as spine. There is a huge variation going on, with lots of changes in tempo and structure, and including quite some breaks. Seriously, it is remarkable how different all passages and chapters are, yet at the same time including a firm cohesion, organic and mature in nature. And compared to the former material, that progression is even more pronounced.

Other elements of that impressive variety are, for example, the use of not that unusual instruments (like acoustic guitars, cello, keyboards and mouth harp) and voices (whispers, harmony choir singing, clean voices, spoken words and (semi-operatic) female vocals, besides the main vocals / screams, which are quite throaty and shrieking). And you know, it fits. Okay, this material is enormously catchy, and that’s why the addition of these elements (both vocal and instrumental) are appropriate for sure. Kuhaghan Tyyn must be considered a Black Metal opera, a theatrical or dramatical tale, injected with elements from related genres, such as Melo-Death, Epic and Gothic Metal. Therefor the result sounds universal and timeless. With the latter, I mean that this album is not exactly inspired by the First or Second Wave exclusively (at all). It has a modern touch of execution, yet without turning into an over-fabricated avantgarde thing either.

The sound quality is very decent for sure. When you analyze the mix of all individual vocals and instruments, you can easily dissect each of them. Even though this album is, as mentioned before, strongly guitar-based at first, all other instruments are so well-mixed into the whole. Too often, guitar-led material reduces the rhythm instrumentation to inferior levels, but here all ‘background’ instruments are clearly audible. That’s a cool thing, evidently. But hey, it might seem that I am just looking for something negative, but even though it is purely personal what I’m going to add, but I do miss a certain roughness somehow. Okay, a semi-complex and theatrical album like this one goes better with a ‘clean’ sound than a primordial one, but maybe it is a little too polished. Yet as said, that isn’t but my personal opinion, so you do not need to agree.

Some passages are quite epic in essence, others rather focus on dramaturgical spheres or, then again, a harsher and more powerful attitude. I would like to refer to the track Aokigahara especially, for this one gathers about all angles and visions that characterize this album (note: actually all of them do, cf. the lengthy duration of all four compositions on this album). This album must not be considered an expression of ‘traditional’ Black Metal. It’s rather a dark opus, a grotesque narrative. I must refer as well to the textual side, which is totally fitting to the sonic side. The choice of words and sentence constructions is surprising (as said in English, with modest fragments in French, German and, if I am not mistaken, Kyrgyz). The content, well, that’s up to you, but it is a nice read for sure.
