Alexander Ivanovich Vvedensky was a Russian poet who died in 1941 at the age of 37, and whose work is said to have had a formidable influence on “unofficial” and avant-garde art during and after the times of the Soviet Union, though his writing was little-known in Russia until long after his death. During his life he faced repeated arrest and died while being transported to one of Stalin’s Gulags.

One of Vvedensky’s poems, “Potets“, recounts the experiences and reflections of a dying man, including his last conversations with his sons. The poem inspired the Russian band Ethir Anduin to create the song we’re premiering today from Ethir Anduin‘s new album, Pathway To Eternity. The Agony. It is one of eight substantial tracks on the album (collectively they amount to 80 minutes of music), each one with its own concept, but in the aggregate forming a diverse yet unified whole.

The album, which will be released by GrimmDistribution on March 16th, also marks a turning point for Ethir Anduin. The band was formed in 2006 as the solo project of A.V. Fenrir, and while guest vocalists appeared among the seven albums preceding this one, Ethir Anduin now has an official vocalist named Luka, who makes her first appearance with the project on this new album.

Over time Ethir Anduin‘s music has evolved, moving from funeral doom to a more blackened and atmospheric form of doom with symphonic components, and from there to what we discovered on the last album, 2018’s Loneliness of My Life, which the releasing labels recommended for fans of Black Sun Aeon, Yearning, Totalselfhatred, Burzum, Shape Of Despair, Forgotten Tomb, KYPCK, and Swallow The Sun.

About the song we’re presenting today, Ethir Anduin explains:

“The idea to transfer this beautiful and depressing poem to music has been in mind for a long time, it is a very big and serious work, to convey all the tragedy, sadness and loneliness of a dying person. Close people do not understand him, they demand something from him, answers to stupid questions. And what he can answer them, after moment he will go into the world of the dead. He is tormented by unfulfilled dreams and what he has not managed to do in this life that has become a time like a tangle, that’s unwrapped all the way to the end, and a little more, you’ll miss the thread. And that’s the end of it.”

As for the music, Ethir Anduin create a tapestry of contrasting sounds on “Last Struggle“. Through feverish and jarring riffs and percussive cannonades, the song creates feelings of tension and turmoil, and Luka‘s amalgam of throat-ripping screams and deep roars amplifies those sensations. There are now evident hardcore elements in Etjhir Anduin‘s music, but the band haven’t completely abandoned the elements of black metal and doom. In addition, Lara‘s clean singing adds another dimension to this musical tale, whose simmering and shining guitar tones further introduce mystical reveries into the sound.

There are times in the song when the melody softly channels a sense of wistfulness and regret, but juxtaposes those passages with bursts of jolting, near-atonal heaviness and moments of panoramic melancholy. The sequence of punishing, pneumatic rhythms and anguished, buzzing guitar near the end leads to a denouement that is disturbing, and seems fueled by pain and fear.

Black/Doom Metal

Состав: A.V.

Pathway To Eternity.

The Agony". Ethir Anduin.

Так что "Pathway To Eternity.

В любом случае "Pathway To Eternity.

A coisa resulta.

Russia's  Ethir  Anduin  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  band  adding  vocals  into  their  mixture  of  black,  doom,  progressive  and  post  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2020  album  "Pathway  to  Eternity.  The  Agony"  which  was  released  by  Grimm  Distribution.

Clean  playing  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  and  melodic  musical  direction  while  all  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  Clear  vocals  can  also  be  heard  briefly  along  with  the  music  also  adding  in  a  great  amount  of  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  and  death  metal  growls.

When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats.  Spoken  word  parts  and  whispers  can  also be  heard  briefly  along  with  the  music  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  post  rock  elements.

The  slower  riffs  also  bring  in  the  heaviness  of  doom  metal  along  with  the  music  also  having  its  progressive  moments.  Clean  playing  also  makes  a  return  on  some  of  the  later  tracks  and  some  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them,  synths  can  also  be  heard  on  some  of  the  tracks   and  tremolo  picking  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of  the  faster  riffing.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  philosophical  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Ethir  Anduin  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black,  doom, progressive  and  post  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.

Russian Black Doom Metal band Ethir Anduin have recently released their latest album, offering 8 tracks of existential misery.

This shouldn’t really be considered Black Doom, since it also has a lot of elements of bands like Lacuna Coil in between, and also a slight bit of Death Metal. Nevertheless, the vast majority of the music could be considered so.

This particular album has no short songs, only showing transcendental music similar to Icelandic Black Metal, but not completely, giving also influence from the music scene of their own country. The most interesting songs may be “Pandemonium” and “Last Struggle”, but each song has its own beauty. Maybe this should be divided in 2 albums though, since not everyone may be in the mood for an 80-minute album.

I recommend this greatly recorded album to fans of modern Black Metal, bands like Lacuna Coil or Doom bands like Draconian. With enough patience to bear the eternal suffering of existence, you may like to check this out.

The Agony».

Acojonantemente bueno es el mistérico inicio de "The Invisible Veil of the Cold Silence".

The Agony».

The Agony».

Enjoy, :))

Ethir Anduin «Pathway To Eternity. The Agony».

This is the 8th ETHIR ANDUIN album and my second one. I liked the previous one I reviewed and I hope that I will like this one too. But I will only know after I have heard it. So I better get on with playing this album. It didn’t take me long to realize that I like this one too. It might not be the fastest of the lot but boy is this heavy and brutal stuff. Mix that up with some more somber, dreamy parts and you get an album that is full of angst ridden emotions. If you are looking for a more atmospheric black metal album instead of a full steam ahead this might appeal to you. I appeals to me.

The Russian outfit Ethir Anduin was formed about fifteen years ago (2006) by some Alexey Veselov aka Fenrir. He’s also in Bestial Deform and very recently he joined Atra Haeresis. Throughout the years, Ethir Anduin did release more than a handful of full-lengths, quite some EP’s and some digital singles. I have not always been the biggest ‘fan’ of this act, yet as from a couple of years, the evolution is remarkable; at least, that’s my personal opinion, for what it’s worth.

Ethir Anduin did mainly release instrumental albums in the past. This newest epos, however, is one which includes lyrics / vocals once again. Therefor Fenrir joined forces with (female) screamer Elena ‘Luka’ Vladimirovna, who also guested in the very recently released Atra Haeresis debut-album Pretium (which also includes Fenrir; available via Satanath Records in a partnership with Kryrart Records and Void Wanderer Productions), which might explain this collaboration.

Pathway To Eternity. The Agony is, once more, a very lengthy album, clocking eighty (80!) minutes, divided into eight parts (eight titles), each of them lasting in between eight up to twelve minutes. It got released via Ukrainian label GrimmDistribution in a physical edition of five hundred copies. This jewel-case compact-disc comes with a folded six-page booklet, with a fine lay-out done by Paint-It-Black Design, and including the lyrics. These texts are based on poetic works by some Alexander Ivanovich Vvedensky (there was a contested priest with the very same name, having close contacts with the Bolshevik / Communist party during the first half of last century, but that’s not of importance right here), more specific his posthumously released work Potets. He died in some gulag when he was only 37 years of age, and his works became ‘famous’ long after his death; but that too does not matter within this specific review.

So, this album takes a next step within the history of Ethir Anduin. First of all, the vocals are new, i.e. there were voices in the past, yet it is the first time that Ethir Anduin does include a vocalist in its line-up. Luka is a very skilled singer with a huge timbre: spoken words, whispers, yells, screams, grunts, clean chants, whatever, she does it all. The better part are screamo-like ones, warm melodious chants and icy screams, but as said, deeply-gurgling growls and bestial grunts, narrative parts and gloomy sighs are part of the deal too. Since the lyrics are written and sung / spawned in the band’s mother tongue, the Russian language, I can’t explain what they literally deal with, but it has nothing to do, I guess, with drinking sweet cocktails on some sunny beach or a first tender kiss on the cheek of your beloved. As said, the lyrical content is based on that work by some Vvedensky, and it seems to focus on daily life’s contradictions: night versus day, life versus death, low-profiled versus universal, satisfaction versus unfulfillment, physical versus spiritual; it’s about incomprehension, sadness and affliction, torment and inner struggles. It’s about a person leaving his earthly existence, leaving the harsh tragedy called life…

From instrumental / composition-wise side too, the whole did evolve intensively. The project has always offered an extremely varied and diversified approach, exploring the most extreme antipoles in a cohesive manner. Pathway To Eternity. The Agony however is even more complex and adventurous than ever before. Each single title (not that strange, of course, seen the lengthy duration of each of them) is a labyrinthine interplay of involute structures, avantgarde injections and different related genres and subgenres. The latter includes stuff like Doom and Doom-Death Metal, Atmospheric and Funereal Black Metal, Progressive Rock / Metal, Post-Rock, Funeral Doom, Gothic and Dark Metal, Symphonic Metal and so on. Besides, there are acoustic moments, hints of Ambient and Contemporary Classical, orchestral parts, and so on. It’s tragic and dramatic, then again violent and explicit, or integer, or enthralling. You know, despite it’s stunning length, each five seconds something else seems to happen.

The strength of the whole album, then again, is that the whole does offer a very coherent result. Notwithstanding the initial confusion, each listen reveal the cohesive aspects, step by step. Yet still it remains a harsh experience, this Pathway To Eternity. The Agony. The huge variation in speed, for example, seems so naturally smooth and evident, despite the persistent and variegated shifts.

The string-work and percussions permanently seem to battle, against each-other, and against themselves. Orthodox passages permanently interact with progressive ones, crafted experiments inject excerpts of relative traditional basic structures, and the ingenious constructions remain energetic, atmospheric and somehow personal too (which of course has to do with the poetic source of inspiration).

Cool too is the monumental production, done by Fenrir himself. Since this complex album comes with such an amount of instruments and voices, the mix needs to be well-balanced. And indeed, that surely is the case. Despite the many levels and instruments / vocals used, all of them are equally represented. There is a certain modest roughness too, yet not too raw (nor too clean, luckily). Too much grimness within the production would denigrate certain parts or aspects, too much cleanliness would screw up the message and take away the focus of the total experience.

This project has never been ‘everybody’s cup of tea’. That’s not different right now; on the contrary. I think that, with an even more technically complex performance and the addition of vocals throughout the whole album, the result might be the most difficult Ethir Anduin album to date. But it is worth giving it a try – or several tries, for you might, eventually, adore it…

Ethir Anduin (Rus) was founded by Alexey Veselov aka Fenrir in 2006. Fenrir does all music for the band instrumentally and this album sound kind of genius when think about this. A main vocalist for the band is a female singer, Luka.

This is a very long record, lasting well over 70 minutes, and I think that it is worth devoting time to their music as the songs sound pretty diverse in terms of metal genres and emotions that they genuinely mixed in, which gives various musical outcome. Album also has very good production quality.

Pathway To Eternity. The Agony combines black and death metal together but album does not has a strict death or black metal songs, something more in between - perhaps blackened death metal is the best description... From there, music hits a crossroad of genres: post black metal, chunky death core, melo-brutal, experimental death metal... It`s not really progressive album but if they have had pushed it one step forward toward this direction, I`d be very close to say that it is.

Tracks that represents black metal/post black and death metal influences in the band are songs like Awareness Of The Frailty Of Being and Last Struggle, with some guitar groove added to the equation.

Blazing blackened death metal with some technical death metal guitars is a track Eternal Shining Star.

Beneath The Ruins is an experimental death and black metal with clean and brutal vocals, as everywhere on the album.

Crushingly heavy track is The Universe Hears Everything that leans toward death/core/doom and experimental and fast black metal.

A song entitled The Agony starts off pretty much like a slow, ominous doom metal but there is a significant change in music which adds complex-some, blackened death metal and brutal&melodic leads. Very good guitar solos in this track.

More heavy, melo-doom/death metal song is a third one on the track list, which has some amazing black metal riffs too.

There are more structured, layered and intense guitar work in music or moments of complete easiness, so you need to focus on what is happening on this album, in order to enjoy of what you just heard.  Music wise, it is certainly a very rich album. You can`t be sure what comes next in their songs, they crafted and diversified them to void repeatability. I personally got hooked to this album by a fact that they do not always deliver anything too obvious musically, which for instance is an arrhythmia that they do to their tracks by changing a pace of songa, while music is just intense and flourishing mix of metal genres that sound modern by the sound..It`s not easy to stick a label to their songs and say to what genre this record belongs to, which I like.

Songs have variety of vocals as well. What is very characteristic about them is that you may hear melodic vocals where you not necessarily expected them to be, and of course, there are also extreme vocals all over the album, such as guttural growls, screams, whispers (a bit too much of it in songs) which all impact songs with emotionally driven twist and dose of brutality mixed with melo-melancholic parts. There is a good balance and diversity in vocals but have to write right now that drums and bass sound amazing too. All guitar work is essential for a character of their songs which is complex extreme metal but the one that sounds very much accessible to my ears.

It is challenging to listen to this record, I`ve done it many times now.

Ethir Anduinin uutuus “Pathway To Eternity. The Agony” alkaa lupaavasti viettelevillä puhtailla seireenilauluilla, joka keskeytyy modernilta deathcorelta kuulostavaan matalalle viritettyjen kielisoitinten sekä triggerirumpujen tykittelyyn. Siis vou vou vou, hetkinen seis, kelataan takaisin!

Aikalailla koko äänipaletti on käytössä.
