If you’re looking for a history lesson, it would take a more knowledgeable man than myself to provide one for Poland’s Manipulation. However, being the factual mamma jamma that I am, I was able to discover that Manipulation will be releasing Mind Control Ultra on June 10th through Satanath Records.

Based off the album title, I’m willing to risk my journalistic integrity by assuming that Manipulation’s fourth L.P. release is going to be a character study in the cruelty that humanity subjects itself to in the pursuit of knowledge. Ripe picking for death metal indeed. Doing a second by second breakdown of “From the Inside” would be silly but suffice to say if you like death metal you’ll more than likely get down with some Manipulation. But of course, that’s your decision to make so don’t be bashful about pressing the play button. It’s the one button you should never feel guilty about pressing.

https://www.indymetalvault.com/2019/05/20/track-premiere-manipulation-from-the-inside/

Album působí stejně syrově, mrtvolně, chladně a temně.

Má v sobě totiž velký náboj, drive, sílu, temnotu a hnis. Takhle nějak si představuji skvělé patology, které si místo skalpelů vzali do rukou hudební nástroje! Mrtví se jednou stejně vrátí, aby pomstili všechny křivdy! Skvělý počin!

Asphyx says:

Two years ago, in civilian service, I carried dead bodies to the autopsy room. Ugly chunks, suicides people with horror in their eyes, drowned people stinking of mud. I wandered through the hospital corridors, watching the endless autopsies. I know many forms of death and many times I have had to do a lot to get out of it and not to become crazy. At last always helped me good extreme music. With headphones, everything looked better, more pleasant.

When I first heard the new album of Polish death metallers MANIPULATION, I suddenly felt like I was pushing a trolley with the dead body a few meters under the ground. The atmosphere of the whole recording is very similar. As if I came back in time and washed my hands after incinerating amputated parts of the bodies. The album have a same impact is raw, deadly, cool and dark.

"Mind Control Ultra" is a recording that is built on solid classic death metal bases. They are further developed by the band, they enriching them with more modern elements, not even afraid of light progression. Everything cuts incredibly, riffs are painful, precisely targeted to the most sensitive areas. I walk under the artificial hospital light and the blood would not be cut in me. Suddenly, the one week dead body had spoken and started to beat the same rhythm as I did. MANIPULATION has done a lot of work with everything and left nothing to chance. Excellent, harsh sound, the cover also impresses. There is no need to write about ideas, so many of them are on “Mind Control Ultra” that they will only come to the surface after several listening. I am no longer employed in the hospital today, but if I want to remember death, so I like to play this album. It has a great charge, drive, strength, darkness and pus. This is how I imagine great pathologists who have taken musical instruments into their hands instead of scalps! The dead will come back once to avenge all grievances! Great work!

The Future Of Immortality“ (2007), „Passion“ (2012), „Ecstasy“ (2015).

„Worshipers Of Mirage“ startet etwas ruhiger und melodischer. Der eingängige Rhythmus reißt unwillkürlich mit. The beginning of bang your head.

„From The Inside“ und „MK-Ultra“ fordern nun endgültig meine Nackenmuskulatur.

Manipulation hail from Poland and have been on the go since 2003, with Mind Control Ultra (out now, Satanath Records) being their fourth full length effort. And it’s a blinder. A new band to me, this is the kind of album that makes me want to hit the back-catalogues.

Poland’s pretty well known and respected for its extreme music scene, and with sounds like this coming from it this is hardly a surprise. While managing to be incredibly heavy throughout, Mind Control Ultra makes good use of atmospheric tones to set the scene both at the beginning and during many of the songs. “Worshippers of Mirage” is a prime example, choral sounds welcoming you in before a brief bass note and the harsh vocals commence. Thirty seconds later and the abrasive blast-beats remove all doubt that this was some kind of experimental / atmospheric album.

As befits death metal, this is an angry album with plenty of places for you to bang your head and thrash like a loon. But what sets it aside are those little interludes. They simply add more depth to what would otherwise be a fairly generic sound. Without them you’d have a quality death metal album. With them, you have a high quality death metal album with a little something to set it out from the crowd.

Pit-Art.

This is the fourth full-length record of the Polish death brigade, where the five-piece antichristian unit sets the bar even higher. They present twelve songs forged into the most destructive cavalcade of focused hatred for humanity. Their accuracy is outstanding in every aspect, they have full control over their instruments and are aware of everything they do. They artistically mix the brutal guitar riffs with ethereal melodies, devastating blast beats, bloodthirsty vocal parts and, of course, give the diabolical outcome to us in terms of speed for 46 and a half minutes. From a musical point of view, I would compare the repertoire of "Mind Control Ultra" to their Polish buddies: Behemoth, Hate, Thy Disease and Decapitated. Of course, there is much else going on there that is remarkable and ensures respect towards Manipulation. This is high-tech death metal that hits the right vibe from start to end. There is no complaint about the sound production, as it is very punchy, meaty and demanding as far as speed allows. Elements of modern, let's say djent or deathcore, and black metal are kindly presented there as well. Thus don't be surprised if you'll bump into a few passages reminiscent to Dimmu Borgir or Meshuggah. This is a very diverse musical frenzy that you should listen to right away on the bandcamp page of Manipulation!!!

Dobra, no to nadszedł czas, by opisać w końcu muzykę.

The music of Manipulation is so angry, so aggressive and furious, like if they were a meteor with trajectory to destroy any planet on its way. This album is about everything that potentially sounds intelligently extreme and dangerous. Here, they create hybrid music from sub-genres like death core, cold wave industrial, thrash core, math metal and everything else with nuclear power potential. It`s not that much of a joke, music of this band put my speakers in threat of damaging them and my head is nearly about to explode when I “wow” brutal music voyages of the band. Whether they play fast or just heavy, the band is finding their ways to hunt you down, like a terminator that keeps going on you until its mission is achieved. This album is so energy charged that better do not be surprised if their music will infuriate you and give you the energy boost that your body normally could not accept.

Manipulation belongs to circle of bands that sound alike Decapitated, Shodan, Banisher which means that you won`t stop digging their music. Now, you can make your own opinion about them when buying this album that really has many powerful songs: fast&atmospheric-Instruments Of Change, ominous/futuristic- Worshipers Of Mirage, heavy&fast- Slaves Of The System, Room 216, sludgy death metal- MK-Ultra, furious-Limits, intricate-Trample The Weak, track called RFID seems the only way to hear some melodies in their music, even if this band do not really need it to write interesting songs....

Manipulation is going from strength to strength with their music. Killer album!

Ainda assim, grande regresso.

Instruments Of Change welcomes listeners to Mind Control Ultra. Both heavy and blasting metal with varying growls and screams offer a good mind control start. The song offers brief hints of other less metal influences too. Worshipers Of Mirages expands on the other influences with an atmospheric interlude and industrialized parts that thankfully don't ruin the song. Slaves Of The System blasts its way with a grinding start. The blast beats and more straightforward metal parts make Mind Control Ultra an excellent album. From The Inside follows a similar formula. The variations remain heavy but the speed and grind is superior. The title track, shortened to MK-Ultra, refers to the secret military experiment that was supposedly stopped but has continued and even achieved its goal. Ironically this song spends more time being experimental. Limits is again more straightforward in its execution. Energy Of The Universe showcases the band's attempts in throwing in a few variations while not letting go of the main strength of the album. The Skull With Acid In Eye dares us to enter Room 216. A warning and haunting intro for what follows and what follows is indeed the aforementioned room. Room 216 is described as dirty, hungry and wild where death is guaranteed and those who enter it are reborn "from the black". The band profess their hate for religion as they present an impressive song. Trample The Weak grinds for two minutes and includes an angry heavy section too. R.F.I.D. continues the life control theme. The song surprises with an altered voice clean vocals sections. It comes dangerously close to metalcore. Tale Told By An Idiot is another commentary on humanity. Odd, out of this world pulsing sounds end this mind control system.

Zkusme to trochu rozebrat.

Začnu mou oblíbenou disciplínou, kterou je obal. Ačkoliv si cením trpělivosti a zaručené práce grafika, který něco takového dokáže vytvořit, pořád jsem si k podobným motivům nenašel cestu. Jakkoliv se autor snaží, aby výjev vypadal autenticky, na mě to má pořád stejný účinek – syntetické, umělé, nicneříkající, bez emocí. Připomíná to trochu Válku světů a utrpení z koncentračních táborů.

Do budoucna bych viděl jasný cíl tvorby Manipulation právě ve strojově chladném zázemí opuštěných, olejem nasáklých továrnách, kde budou pánové stavět příběhy plné bizarností a fantaskních vizí.

Polish Death Metal mongers Manipulation have been kicking since the early 2000s, but while I can't speak for their previous output, I can say that Mind Control Ultra is an aggressive frenzy of unorthodox technicality that reminds me a lot of similarly technical acts like Origin and Immolation. Outside of the bizarre sound effects and robotic narration of "Skull with Acid in Eye", this is a lightning-speed bombardment of severe and complex Death Metal accentuated with keyboards and built upon strange harmonies and fast, unusual breaks that'll take more than a single listen to properly digest. The playing is tight and razor-sharp, with skin-basher Kriss giving an intense and hyperactive performance that would rival that of Animal from the legendary act Dr. Teeth and The Electric Mayhem, and the band even slows down in places to create a nightmarish atmosphere that helps break up the blasting ferocity enough to give it some real identity. If you prefer your Death Metal on the intricate side, this is definitely worth checking out.

MANIPULATION are not new to me. This is as far as I can tell my 3rd encounter with them. And each previous time they have impressed me with their brutal take on death metal. I have no reason to change my mind with this new one. They continue to decimate with ultra brutal death metal. Listening to this is like sparring with a really good boxer while you yourself aren’t even half decent. You know that it can only end one way. But you wouldn’t have it any other way. This is brutal stuff with a really cool groove.

Due to health-related circumstances within my family, I am working / I try to work away my delayed reviews for a label, or better, a cooperative of labels, that I adore for several reasons: the varied sonic approaches, the open-minded support, and last but not least, the wonderful guy behind these labels, Mister Aleksey ‘Satanath’ Korolyov. Anyway, whatever, thank you, and stuff…

This review deals with the fourth full-length by Poland’s finest Manipulation, an act that started at the very beginning of this century and which consists of former or current members of e.g. Cinis, Empatic or Deathbringer. Throughout the years, these worshippers of mirage (!) did record and release some material that was quite well appreciated in, especially, their home-country, and after about four years of silence, Manipulation do return with Mind Control Ultra, which gets available after signing to the mighty upcoming label Symbol Of Domination Productions.

This act did record a very modest yet somehow impressing amount of stuff, even though the line-up has not ever been that stable. Especially vocalist-wise, Manipulation did have some issues. However, as a renewed quintet they did collect twelve (new) songs under the banner of Mind Control Ultra; an album that clocks more than forty-six minutes, by the way. Symbol Of Domination Productions came up with five-hundred physical copies, which do include a sixteen-page booklet that contains the lyrics (in English).

From sonic point of listen, Manipulation do perform a very nasty and intense, yet highly technical form of old styled Death Metal. For sure the classic / legendary scene from these guys’ home country does come to mind. But what strikes me enormously is the extended variation and superb atmosphere of this album. When talking about the latter, those spheres, well, this goes further than just performing brutal and devastating Death Metal with that satisfying old-schooled touch of uncompromising fierceness. Actually, these pretty boys (growler Kret, skin-molester Kriss, guitar players Rado.Slav and Vulture, and four-string guitarist Bysiek) know how to combine intensity and energy with detailed eye for content, atmosphere and melody. An element that strengthens this statement is the subtle use of synth parts (acting at the background yet undeniably colourful when used [*]), another one is the addition of some slower parts with smoothly floating melodies as spine. And what about some asphyxiating intermezzos, like that hypnotic excerpt in MK-Ultra, based at first on some intoxicating riff, followed by that mesmerizing and sludgy part!)?

[*] a shorter intermezzo like The Skull With Acid In Eye is an example of weirdly-constructed sonic creativity, mingling psychedelic synth-lines, tribal drum-patterns, jazzy percussion and meditative keyboard-layers (and bizarre manipulated voices at the end).

Yet the better part is harsh and uncompromising for sure. Most compositions are based on a furious rhythm section (the bass-sound adds a level of suffocating obscurity, the extremely varied drum-patterns pound, rage, beat and thunder, the rhythm guitars support the front-line of the warlike hordes at the blood-drenched battlefields; oops, I got overwhelmed by an intolerant level of militant poetry). All this lifts up the timeless leads and melodies, sometimes raging like a rabid bull on acid, then again based on duelling leads and some tremolo riffing, once in a while experimental and progressively high-tech-performed in the vein of some of the U.S.A.’s most notorious bands, or mathematically explored and dissected. Also the progressive, djenty experimentation à la, let’s say, earlier Meshuggah, Gojira, After The Burial and the likes, gets used to enrich this border-trespassing elegance. Once in a while, even subtle hints of Epic / Black Metal do enter the adventure. And I cannot forget to mention the megalithic throat of Kret, quite diversified in expression: growls and grunts, screams, and even some aberrations-on-purpose!

A word about the production: scorching! Honestly, the sound quality is extremely powerful and intense, empowering the energy that characters this extreme stuff. Yet above all, the attention given to a well-balanced equilibrium of all instruments is simply honourable. The aural result therefor isn’t but ear-candy.

A must for fans of, and I’ll keep it enormously open-minded, everything in between Thy Decease, Hate, Origin, Hate Eternal, Decapitated or even Suffocation and Immolation.
