We’re pleased to bring you the premiere of Granada’s new album Sincronizado (listen below), which is scheduled to be officially released on June 23rd through Satanath Records‘ sub-label Symbol Of Domination (Belarus). You can purchase the album here.

The band commented on the album: “Life is a cycle where we are born and die synchronized with nature, but it is as if we were constantly struggling to break that bond. Consumerism and greed blinds us and transforms us into our worst enemies.”

Granada was formed in the year 2008 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Founded by Guillermo Estévez (vocals and guitar), the band´s debut show was in 2010 with Black Dahlia Murder (USA), and continued with a series of shows in every possible venue in Buenos Aires and the rest of Argentina. With 03 full lengths and one EP, the band has crossed the border by touring the neighboring countries and achieving huge admiration from the audiences of all over the world.

The band’s fourth album Sincronizado, arrays a violent sound that amalgams old school speed and modern, aggressive thrash metal with hard groove influences and bipolar aggressive singing.

The song you’re about to hear doesn’t follow the path you probably think it’s going to follow from the way it begins, and the variations in its course are one reason it’s so appealing (but not the only reason).

The name of the song is “Almas Vendidas” and it comes from the new fourth album by the Argentinian band Granada. Entitled Sincronizado, it will be released on June 23rd by Satanath Records‘ sub-label Symbol of Domination.

The variations in the song include the interweaving of stylistic ingredients, including thrash, hardcore, groove, and more. At the outset, it moves like a big juggernaut, propelled by body-moving rhythms and heavy riffs, and it’s also damned catchy right from the start. But then the song starts twisting and turning, with the band changing pace and time signatures and dealing out some eye-opening bass and guitar performances, along with razor-sharp drumming that also changes almost from moment to moment.

And along the way you also get a face-melter of a solo, changes in the vocals as well, and a good dose of headbanging before the song ends.

The band’s remarks on the track are as follows: “Solve” or “solutio” refers to the breaking down of elements and “Coagula” refers to their coming together. In the process of transmuting base metal into gold or arriving at the Philosopher’s stone, this contained both literal and hidden meaning. Solve et Coagula expresses transmutation from base to a finer state, the perpetual goal of spiritual growth and human evolution.

Granada comments on the title track video: "Taxidermy is the preserving of an animal's body via stuffing or mounting for the purpose of display or study. In the official video, we shot a real Taxidermist working for us, trying to communicate that the process of recording and album or song, or even playing it live is similar to Taxidermy."

It is obvious that metal is not restricted to one language alone. But not all the languages get their respected attention, due to some narrow-minded people restricting their musical taste to a language that they are familiar with. It hurts to say, but I was one among the narrow-minded people until I found some Icelandic black metal bands. From there my knowledge widened as I got a spoon each of Russian, Latin and German metal music.

Now here I am to share an Argentinian thrash/groove metal band, Granada, who sing in Spanish. Ever since their formation in the year 2008 the band has released albums having immense brutality and complexity. The band played their first show alongside death metal virtuosos The Black Dahlia Murder which in my opinion is fortunate. Playing thrash metal with a tinge of groove and hardcore characteristics, these Argentinians released their latest album, Sincronizado (the Spanish word for “synchronized”) earlier in 2017.

Here is what the band had to say about their album:

Life is a cycle where we are born and die synchronized with nature, but it is as if we were constantly struggling to break that bond. Consumerism and greed blinds us and transforms us into our worst enemies.

Let us find out whether we could do synchronised headbanging to their songs.

Songs have immense adrenaline and aggressiveness; their musical essence is somewhat similar to that of old school thrash metal acts as their instrumentation showcases thick guitar riffs intertwined with thunderous drumming. However, the band does have a different approach for the vocals. Hardcore-esque vocal works which ranges from high scream false chord to death metal-esque growls. Apart from the vocals and instrumentation, it’s the production that is essential to identify whether or not the band is good at what they are doing.

It’s very much safe to say that Granada have perfect production. Not so polished/not so raw production is rather rare to find nowadays as most of the bands prefer to take up polished production since they are easier to work with and obviously sounds better, but in reality it destroys the versatility of the song. For instance if the band took up clean production for drums, the drummer won’t be able to utilise his skins to produce variant samples as the computer restricts the music to a single tone.

The album is very versatile as we have a lots of different experiences altogether. From the raw aggressiveness of the title track, “Sincronizado”, to memorable guitar passages in the instrumental track “Mas Alla de la Muerte”, the album has everything to take thrash/groove metal by storm.

The most interesting song on this album is “Solve Et Coagula”, as the song has splendid sound and a hidden meaning to portray. When it comes to the sound, it is pretty much their original thrashy and groovy hardcore instead having some complex and perplexing time signatures at transitions. However, the song sounds perfect as the midway solo adds an extra point. Moving onto the “hidden meaning”, here is what the band said about this track:

“Solve’ or ‘solutio’ refers to the breaking down of elements and ‘Coagula’ refers to their coming together. In the process of transmuting base metal into gold or arriving at the philosopher’s stone, this contained both literal and hidden meaning. ‘Solve et Coagula’ expresses transmutation from base.

Overall the album turned out to be better than I expected as I had some doubts whether or not they would achieve their amalgamation properly, since I have seen a lot of bands fail whilst experimenting with the harsh hardcore genre and thrash. However, the album does require some attention on executing the transitions since some of them are perplexing and sounds out of place (not a huge complaint).

Granada might end up being one among the prolific number of metal acts to emerge out of Argentina. Be sure to keep your eyes on them.

Released in June, Sincronizado is one of two promotional videos Granada filmed for their most recent release. The second video for La Serpiente was released this month. The Buenos Aires band got started opening for Black Dahlia Murder as their first performance. In 2010 they released a demo (Tocá Metal, Cagón) which was followed by a steady string of full lengths (Historias in 2012, Apocalyptic Metal in 2013, Prisionego in 2015 and Sincronizado in 2017). As you may have surmised, Granada write their lyrics entirely in Spanish. This is nothing new for South American metal but here it sounds as volatile as the first bands to do so. As Granada was founded by two guitarists (Manuel "Manolo" Mauriño and Guillermo "Guille" Estevez who is also the band’s vocalist) the crunch and groove is laid forward with gratuitous vehemence from the earliest notes. The dual guitars’ cutting, scraping production goes further to express how caustic the band is capable of being. The drums played by Marcos Edwards are more foundational than usual in pushing this cut forward and while Matias Brandauer’s bass is mostly in the background it offers many absorbing variations on the riffs. Edwards and Brandauer played together in another BA thrash band called Khumeia. This band leaned closer to thrash-death metal as opposed to the thrash-groove of Mauriño and Estevez, so those two dole out much brutal heaviness as the rhythm section. The chorus is fetching with a memorable hook. To offer some words about the video, it shows the band playing in a shady setting and fleeting images of what appears to be a deranged taxidermist and his test subjects. It’s unclear who this taxidermist is or what his purpose as shown in the video is, but these scenes rely more on implied violence than outright gore. This video and the video for La Serpiente are at Granada’s Youube site linked above.

Garantido.

This Argentinian thrash metal band is crossover in a way that I haven’t heard in a long time. I reviewed a previous release of theirs and as far as I can remember I liked it. I must have because I like this new one. There is a hc feel to the thrash that they play. The mosh parts are heavy as hell. And there is an attitude that makes me think back to early crossover bands from the late 80s/early 90s. The fact that they sing in Spanish gives this an exotic touch. But everything about this screams classic crossover. As much as I am bombarded with modern day crossover I am not really ready to let this old school variant go just yet.

http://battlehelm.com/reviews/granada-sincronizado/

"Life is a cycle where we are born and die synchronized with nature, but it is as if we were constantly struggling to break that bond, consumerism and greed blinds us and trasforms us into our worst enemies"

After Ordem Satânica, All My Sins and Gökböri, here you are another band that sung in their not English mother tongue: Granada. From Argentina, they are a prolific band able to release, from their foundation in 2008, even 4 full-lenght albums from 2012 to 2017, included the last one named "Sincronizado". I received it 3 months ago by Aleksey of the Russian label Satanath Records, the parent label of Symbol of Domination (from Belarus) that released this "Sincronizado".

This album will torment your fuckin' ears through 10 songs in which there is a dynamic and inventive thrash metal full of anger able to crush you with a very good alternation between fast and slow tempos (these ones even with arpeggios), showing also some dissonant riffs, often a guitar solo a song also played wth a rocking vibe (like the one in "Solve et Coagula"), the wild and unpredictable drumming of Marcos Edwards, and a singer by name of Guillerme "Guille" Estevez that ranges from evil and disturbed screams (as in "La Serpiente", and it isn't a case considering the title of this song!) to some growls and without forgetting unfrequent clean vocals ("Almas Vendidas"). Besides all this, there is a long instrumental track (almost 5 minutes of lenght) titled "Más allá de la muerte", that ends the album with the two guitarists that here have a lot fun playing many guitar solos while its intro and outro are dominated by a totally delirious piano.

But the inventiveness of Granada is partly due to the fact that they love to mix their thrash metal with various influences mainly coming from punk/hardcore (in fact, their label dub their sound as "thrash metal/hardcore"), groove metal (already listenable in the second mid-tempo track "Sincronizado"...but don't expect the usual boring attempts to clone Pantera!) and, in a less frequent way, death metal (the same growling vocals and some riffs here and there). And you have to combine all this with a certain dark atmosphere, as you can already understand through the same song titles like "Poseso" ("Possessed") and "La Serpiente" ("The Serpent"), but translating these impressions also musically speaking. Consequently, a song like "Poseso" is a notable example of this because of its violence, wickedness and the sick and really possessed vocals by Guillermo. I have to say that just "Poseso" is my favorite song...but shame because my favorite song is only the first one of the album!

So, these are my conclusions: Granada have created an album rich of winning ideas knowing how also to combine an old-school thrash metal approach à la Nuclear Assault with a more modern one à la Machine Head, various influences, some dark feelings, and don't forget a good song more focused on the melodies like "Almas Vendidas". So, if you want an intense but imaginative thrash metal, do a favor for yourself and give a chance to "Sincronizado"...and don't care if you will understand absolutely nothing about the lyrical themes sung in Spanish! And for the skeptics, I suggest to watch the videoclips that Granada shot for the titletrack and "La Serpiente"!

SODP100!!!
