Any release that manages to top out all 3 scales is one truly deserving of special accolades.  So it is with much respect and pride that I am able to bestow this honor on a relatively small and unknown group of musicians, Ukraine's Balance Interruption.  The songs on this release are not only fast and mathmetically complex: the compositions manage to boil all of this chaos into something extremely listenable.  From the guitars and electronic beats to the wailing saxophone, the writing is on point and the performances are alive.  The fusions of electronic, avant-garde, and black metal are ones that defy logic at times, and truly do "upset the balance."  And returning to the idea of score overlap, few achieve such bizzareness while still maintaining tracks that are highly digestible even after a single sitting.

Abstruse Eerie Radiance.

Out last September 28th 2016 was ‘Door 218‘ by Balance Interruption via Satanath Records and Abstruse Eerie Radiance.

An experimental black metal act from Kiev, Ukraine, don’t be fooled by any doubts about this album as it is a gem to listen to.

A merger of experimental metal, trippy metal and black and death metal, be ready to be transported into musicality and aggressiveness. The samples of Slavic discussions (I have no idea what it is being said) along the sax tracks, the guttural vocals and blasting drums makes this album a pure enjoyment to listen as it is refreshing as fun to have in our playlists.

The Butcher’s Ballroom.

Balance Interruption.

Itulah Door 218 ciptaan Balance Interruption.

This is the third album from Ukrainian experimental black metal band Balance Interruption.

All I knew about this band before I listened to them was that they were a black metal band of some description. As such, I was not prepared at all for what I found inside Door 218.

Here we have an album that might not sound as you expect it to upon hearing the black metal tag. Yes, a lot of the familiar elements are present and correct, but there’s a lot of unusual aspects to the music too.

Door 218 features 39 minutes of largely ferocious, dissonant black metal that’s ultra aggressive and very unforgiving to its enemies. However, there’s a lot more than just that to the songs on this release.

Atypical riffs, industrial influences, a touch of the old blackjazz, and top-quality use of the saxophone mean that these tracks have got a lot more interest and ideas in them than a lot of ostensibly similar bands. The saxophone solos in particular are very well played and fit in so well with the music that it makes you wonder why more extreme metal bands don’t make use of this wonderful instrument.

I also like that you can hear the bass and the contribution it makes to the music; it’s used as an autonomous instrument in its own right a lot of the time, which is a joy to hear. This, added to the pitch-black riffs, impressive drums and extra sound effects, results in songs that are extremely satisfying examples of experimental black metal done very, very right.

As you might expect from such diverse and divergent music, the vocals are equally well-performed and relatively varied; screams, growls, shouts and all manner of other vocalisations are used across the album.

Imagine a combination of Mayhem, Dødheimsgard, Red Harvest and Shining (NOR). Yes, Door 218 is as good as that implies.

Very highly recommended.

Balance  Interruption  are  a  band  from  Ukraine  that  plays  a  very  experimental  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2016  album  "Door  218"  which  was  released  as  a  joint  effort  between  Satanath  Records  and  Abstruse  Eerie  Radiance.

Drum  beats  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  avant  garde  yet  heavy  riffing  a  few  seconds  later  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling  and  the  vocals  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  black  metal  screams  and  death  metal  growls.

When  solos  and  leads  are  done  they  bring  in  a  very  melodic  style  and  the  riffs  also  bring  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  and  saxophones  can  also  be  heard  at  times  and  the  songs  also  bring  in a   great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  elements  of  industrial  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  off  the  songs.

Spoken  word  samples  can  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  the  music  gets  more  experimental  as  the  album  progresses  while  the  riffing  also  starts  getting  very  technical and  the  music  also  brings  in  a  more  modern  style  of  black  metal  and  there  is  also  a  brief  use  of  clean  guitars  and  there  are  also  elements  of  drum'n'bass  on  some  of  the  tracks.

Balance  Interruption  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  technical  and  they  also  mix  in  elements  of  avant  garde,  experimental  and  electronic  music  to  create  something  very  original,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover Apocalypse  and  Anti  Religion  themes.

In  my  opinion  Balance  Interruption  are  a  very  great  sounding  experimental  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE "Last  Sunset  Without  Sun"  "D.U.S.T"  and  "Hypnotik  Eye  Kvlt".

Let me just say out front that I don’t think many people, myself included, would pin me as the person here most likely to write up a recommendation post about a black metal group. It’s not that I don’t enjoy some black metal or blackened music, but it is definitely not within my musical wheelhouse and area of expertise. And yet, here I am, about to recommend an obscure experimental black metal band to all of you! The reason I am doing so is because this band, Balance Interruption, prominently features an instrument I do know an awful lot about and have written about here at great length: the saxophone. It is the inclusion of this instrument that not only makes this band an interesting novelty within experimental black, but turns it into one of the best examples of how intelligently including a non-traditional instrument and influence can completely lift a band’s music from pretty good to really damn great.

Taking their most recent album, Door 218, from the beginning, you’re pummeled with an effective, if not entirely unheard of, assault of black metal blastbeats, discordance, and vocal theatrics calling to mind the likes of Dødheimsgard. There’s also an element of industrial noise thrown in there occasionally for good measure. Starting around the 2-minute mark on “Last Sunset Without Sun” though, the song opens up to reveal a wholly unexpected, and glorious soprano sax solo. Similar to the model that Wrvth took with their most recent album (or, for that matter, what Kayo Dot has done many a time), Balance Interruption seem to recognize that the shift from darkened modality into lighter atmospherics that much black metal hinges on to create contrast provides a perfect opportunity for some beautiful jazz-style playing.

The descending chord structure of this bridge section works perfectly with jazz playing, allowing the sax to play well within its conventional and comfortable style without sounding at all out of place, even as the rest of the band ratchet up the intensity to transition back into the heavier mode of the song. It’s not ground-breaking, but it’s hugely effective and surprising upon first listen, not least of which due to the decision to use the high-pitched and smoother tones of soprano sax over the lower registers of baritone, tenor, or even alto. I can’t think of another metal band that has incorporated soprano in such a way, which does create a novelty factor of sorts, but because it’s used so effectively it really serves to lift everything else around it.

Balance Interruption repeat this winning structural formula for most of the album, and though it works well each time on its own, it is a little disappointing to hear them make use of the instrument in only this one way as a solo break/contrast instrument rather than find ways to incorporate it into other parts of the music occasionally. It also tends to make the tracks that don’t make use of it feel flatter and more average by comparison. Make no mistake, Door 218 is a very solid album of experimental black metal through and through, and fans of the genre will find a lot to enjoy here sax or no. But it’s that one element that is able to elevate the music to something greater with more far-reaching potential. It’s a shame that they don’t use that potential to its fullest, but the fact that it exists at all makes Door 218 and Balance Interruption a band absolutely worth checking out and giving a few spins to.

http://www.heavyblogisheavy.com/2016/11/07/hey-listen-to-balance-interruption/

If I gave album of the year to every record that made me say "damn, this is awesome," I would have a lot of them.  It is with this idea in mind that I developed my 3 score system.  Throwing musicianship and innovation into the mix helps keep me a bit more objective, and it really has helped seperate what is fun from what is truly taking steps above and beyond the pack.   Any release that manages to top out all 3 scales is one truly deserving of special accolades.  So it is with much respect and pride that I am able to bestow this honor on a relatively small and unknown group of musicians, Ukraine's Balance Interruption.

What makes this honor even more special in my eyes is that this experimental black metal group from Satanath Records pulled a complete upset.  I had already filled out my top 10's for all 3 categories before Door 218 dropped on my doorstep and threw a wrench into something I had been working on all year.  But hell, they deserve it.  Anyone who follows our facebood page may have caught the first time I listened to the album, during which I called the band "my new spirit animal."  So in terms of Enjoyability, they nailed it immediately  A 10 for this scale means that I would put nearly every song on the album into a must-listen playlist.  Check.

In terms of Musicianship, once again, out of this world.  The songs on this release are not only fast and mathmetically complex: the compositions manage to boil all of this chaos into something extremely listenable.  From the guitars and electronic beats to the wailing saxophone, the writing is on point and the performances are alive.  The guitar riffs range from Absu-esque madness to your more traditional dissonant black metal chords; and the chunky basswork (especially on "Incubatum Conveyer") is unmatched this year.  There have been plenty of technically proficient albums to cross my path, but few managed to achieve such heights while still keeping me 100% engaged. This brings me to my final point, which in many ways I consider to be of the utmost necessity when it comes to an AOTY.

Innovation is a must.  We don't give out Nobel Prizes for things that have been done over and over again already.  Such consideration is reserved for something that breaks new ground.  Again, there have been plenty of albums in 2016 that have done this.  For a long time I was considering Schammasch's Triangle for the award, but for all of that album's impressiveness, Door 218 simply does more.  With the sheer volume of music I listen to on a daily basis these days, I would be hard pressed to say that anything I hear is 100% original, but Balance Interruption reaches about as far as one can hope into this wild territory.  The fusions of electronic, avant-garde, and black metal are ones that defy logic at times, and truly do "upset the balance."  And returning to the idea of score overlap, few achieve such bizzareness while still maintaining tracks that are highly digestible even after a single sitting.

In sum, Door 218 is an album that you simply must not ignore.  It should appeal to headbangers, musician nerds, and the genre-breakers alike.  Every single song will snap your brainstem while also inducing the most pleasant of metal euphorias imagineable.  This by no means should leave you ignoring the other albums I will be highlighting come December, but if for some reason you can only listen to one album this year, it should be this one.  Please support this excellent band and encourage them to continue making music.  My hats off to them, and also to Satanath for taking a chance on something they knew to be special.  Stream it in full today.

You don’t get your hands often onto Black Metal from Kiev, Ukraine, and the combination of both made me curious, as images of men with sable caps and bear fur coats spraying chicken blood while dancing the kasachok appeared in my mind, and eagerly I sink the needle into the vinyl.

Door 218 is the third longplayer of the three-piece band and in the past there have been also 3 Eps. The current album was released in September by Satanath Records, a Russian label that turned to the gloomy side, with Black, Death  Metal and the like.

The record starts with the “Last sunset without sun” and there’s everything you need: drummer Dmitry Kim beats the devil out of his kit, singer NK47 growls through the fast double bass parts and Lucifer on the bass supplies the rest with neat low tones from purgatory.

The band is not wrong with their experimental claim. Industrial elements alternate with quiet or melodic parts, and there is a saxophone solo .!? on the first song, which is by the way one of my recommendations.

Black Metal and Saxophone? Sounds like a pickle cucumber with Nutella, but is not as bad as you should think, the key word is “experimental”.

Moreover, the solo is cool, in the way a saxophonist would interpret Ennio Morricon’s music at the showdown of a Western. Unusual, amazing.

Especially the intros cannot deny their industrial heritage, the songs are bursting with varied pieces, there is brutality, there is sufficient speed and experimental parts, but always from one cast without breaking the compositions.

A successful album, which will probably not climb up high in the mainstream charts, but at least a serious insider tip.

My recommandations are the opener “Last sunset without sun”, the title track “door 218” (with Bassolo) and the disturbing “Suicidealer”.

Regarding the sound of Balance Interruption, the bitchiest maiden would voluntarily lie onto the sacrificial altar, and baby blood is quite tasty without additives and preservatives.

This is Experimental Black Metal from Ukraine and I think the emphasis is on the mental part of experimental for this, the bands 3rd album. Industrial style pounding, mixes with disharmonic riffs, tribal drums, even some soothing Jazz… yep, this is barking fucking mad.

But it’s very precisely executed and you can hear every instrument clearly. And as is usually the case, I can appreciate the more vitriolic sounds, but I don’t really get the weird shit. But if that’s your thing, then you’ll love this as there’s always so much going on at once.

Ώρα: 23.00

-Ωραίο εστιατόριο εδώ μωρό μου , ε;

-Δεν μου είπες, πως σου φάνηκε η Jazz συναυλία που πήγαμε, ωραία δεν ήταν;

-Ήρεμα; Ε όχι και ήρεμα. Δεν θυμάσαι κάτι πειραματισμούς και κάτι αυτοσχεδιασμούς και κάτι γρήγορα σόλο που έπαιζαν; Πώς ήταν αυτό ήρεμο;

-Τι Metal;

-Black.

-Χέστηκα. Να κοιτάνε τη δουλειά τους. Να κοιτάτε τη δουλειά σας! Που είχα μείνει; Α, ναι. Κι εκεί που οι ταχύτητες είναι γρήγορες και γίνεται χαμός, ξαφνικά οι Balance Interruption ρίχνουν συχνά τους ρυθμούς απότομα και μπαίνουν σε πιο ατμοσφαιρικές και ambient καταστάσεις. Κι εκεί είναι που ακούγονται πολύ ωραία solo από σαξόφωνο, ήρεμα και μελωδικά. Βέβαια δεν είναι μόνο το σαξόφωνο που φέρνει σε Jazz, αλλά και τα τύμπανα και το μπάσο, όπως παίζονται σε ορισμένα σημεία, φέρνουν στο μυαλό τη Jazz μουσική, ενώ στο μπάσο χρησιμοποιείται πολλές φορές η slapping τεχνική. Από εκεί και πέρα, όπως σου ανέφερα και πριν, θα ακούσουμε σε πολλά μέρη και ηλεκτρονικά στοιχεία, που ειδικά στις πιο χαοτικές στιγμές ταιριάζουν υπέροχα, και καμιά φορά έχουμε και κάποια πιο μικρά noise περάσματα. Που πας;

Now I’m leaving behind the bands I knew something about and turning to three new discoveries. The first of them is Balance Interruption from Ukraine. Their third album Door 218 will be released on September 28 by the Russian label Satanath Records (who have rapidly become one of my go-to underground labels, as you may have noticed). The song below is the only one now streaming from the album and its name is “Suicidealer”.

I think “Suicidealer” is a very interesting song, with a dark and dissonant beginning that soon grows into something ferocious and eccentric. At about the 2:00 mark, it kicks into an instrumental jam, pierced by a strange lead-guitar melody, that’s electrifying. And after that comes a dreamlike saxophone solo, more frenzied explosiveness, and an unexpected sampled conclusion. It’s an unpredictable ride, to say the least, but a fascinating one.

Room 218 is one of those albums you know is a surreal dream excursion simply from its front cover. The cover art is like an old movie about the vampire mythos; the first I thought of is of course Nosferatu but I’m sure you can think of others. As for the album, it shows Balance Interruption exhibits black metal with a death metal edge and the creative fortitude to unexpectedly enhance it with jazz in strategic places. This is their third full length following Nuclear War For Rescue (2007) and Era II: Deserts Of Ashes (2011). The Ukraine band also include acerbic riffs, unorthodox passages, ambient sounds, electronic/industrial effects, movie samples and even saxophone. I think this last addition will be sufficient to most effectively unhinge extreme metal fans, but it’s only a small sample. I’ll take the chance of stating this is how Pink Floyd might sound if blown back as a black metal outfit (by this I mean the psychedelic era Pink Floyd), especially in their song Morbid Soul Shelter. It may be hubris to say so, but I’m talking about the imagination and feeling evoked, the wonder and abject terror that arises. Besides, I’ve read similar comparisons made by some reviewers. Perhaps something more reasonable would be to say this album falls within that category of Sigh, Tartaros and latter Emperor. If you’re looking for traditional elements you may hear some Mayhem, Deicide and Sepultura (Roots era). Whoever you happen to be reminded of, you won’t be bored while listening as each track brings something different from the previous track to the table, and you won’t be able to help your curiosity to consume everything placed before you. Bands have a better chance to be noticed by revising the rulebook or adding new chapters, and it only takes one song to show Balance Interruption have made a massive effort to take the experimentation of those who came before them in new directions. Making use of guitars, time changes and nightmare visions, the band increase their effectiveness and assail you with one turn after the next. Again you’ll find yourself remembering those few years in the late 90s when a select number of bands played with song structure, verse and arrangement and produced something instantly recognizable as never having been tried. Room 218 is a full length that continues where other bands left off. It’s one of those albums that plays less like a collection of songs and more like the most surreal, horrifying supernatural thriller you’ve seen in your years. One listener’s post on the album’s link at Bandcamp summed it up as saying the Ukrainian underground has outdone itself once again. The breaks between each section of each song sound more clearly defined while retaining consistency. The jazz and saxophone elements added to Last Sunset Without Sun, D.U.S.T., Suicidealer and Imcubatum Conveyor travel those extra miles toward expanding the range a band can compose with and proving it takes intelligence and an unwavering ability to dream to spawn an unforgettable and unorthodox album.

Oprezno!

Te, bih takođe preporučio i nekoliko pesama, kao što su: Last sunset without sun, Door 218, Not survived to the sentencing, Incubatium conveyor.

As of late, I’ve been feeling quite disheartened about the creative emptiness of much black metal. For sure, there are plenty of worthwhile, ambitious releases out there (as well as those which aim to stick to their chosen style, and absolutely nail it); but finding them amidst a sea of generic corpsepainted, tremolo-picking, Satan worshiping clones is quite the task. It’s that which makes the discovery of a band like Balance Interruption all the more heartening. Theirs is a black metal that does not give one single fuck for orthodoxy or the constraints of genre and their third album, Door 218, is a devastating tour-de-force of industrial, progressive black metal that deserves to be raised above the mediocre masses and praised for the damaged genius that it is.

There’s a hell of a lot of different ideas and influences present on Door 218, to the extent that writing them down might give the impression that the album is a directionless mess. Nothing could be further from the truth, though; despite the way the songs will often veer off at progressive tangents, even including the use of saxophone on tracks like ‘Suicidealer’, it always feels as if Balance Interruption have complete control, taking their music in exactly the direction they want it to go. This is not a case of experimentation or diversity simply for the sake of it, but a prime example of how introducing non-metal elements can create stark contrasts, and make the more traditional elements (furious guitars, blast beats, vocals from the depths of hell) seem all the more powerful.

Perhaps the most impressive element of Door 218 isn’t the sheer creative madness on display, or the way that the band still manage to craft actual songs out of all the different sounds they use, but that they do so whilst still keeping that dangerous, blasphemous black metal feeling intact. Even when ‘Incubatum Conveyor’ threatens to veer off in to some almost danceable directions, there is still a cold, harsh, vicious aspect to the music. ‘Morbid Soul Shelter’ lives up to its name, replete with ice-cold guitar movements and a cold atmosphere; whilst ‘D.U.S.T’ has an ominous, lurking violence to it that’s not far removed from De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas – at least, until the saxophone and jazz-infused drumming kicks in, in a startlingly effective change of mood.

From the above, it may be tempting to draw a few comparisons – chiefly, Mysticum and Shining (Nor). Neither of these are quite right though – Balance Interruption don’t come across as being anything like as self-conscious and intentionally awkward as Shining (Nor); and their industrial elements aren’t as dominant to the expense of the metal as I find to be the case with Mysticum, with Door 218 being a black metal album first and foremost. A very strange, challenging one for sure, complimented with all sorts of outside influences and styles, but still fundamentally black metal.

Regardless of such distinctions, the fact remains that Door 218 is a real underground gem, and exactly the kind of album that is worthy of being raised above the generic, tired tropes that constitute so much black metal these days. It is absolutely fearless, and Balance Interruption deserve to be praised for creating such an ambitious piece of art.

O forse no?

Maestralno!

I have a confession to make, though by now it’s probably quite obvious: I’m addicted to skronk, and like a potent drug, its sway over modern black metal and death metal suckers me in every time. But there’s one from 2016 I missed out on, one that feels like it warrants coverage even now, and that’s the latest Balance Interruption album.

As always, I have to give credit to our esteemed editor Islander for covering some of the early singles from Door 218 before it dropped on September 28th through Satanath Records. But, I didn’t see it getting a lot of coverage elsewhere, which is a shame given how high the quality of this album is, so I figured that justifies covering it again now.

The group hail from Kyyiv, Ukraine, and Metal-Archives tells me they’ve been active since 2005, with Door 218 being their third full-length overall thus far. Beyond delivering a potent blend of avant-garde skronky black metal with ravenous deathly influences, Balance Interruption also employ saxophone playing throughout the album, utilizing it in a smooth and melodious fashion as solos and instrumental reprieves between the album’s otherwise ungodly harsh and chaotic nature.

All sexy sax moments aside, Door 218 is a damn fine album that runs circles around the majority of black metal I hear — though the added touch of saxophone-led moments does give it that extra bit of identity all its own within the skronk paradigm where something like this is less common than in progressive black metal such as Solefald, Aenaon, Maladie, Ihsahn, and so forth. Likewise, the bass playing here is fantastic, and gets a more prominent role in the mix and the songwriting than in many of their black metal peers.

If you missed Door 218 until now, don’t let the possibly confusing band name and album title lead you astray; this is a killer fucking album that expertly traverses the line between artistically proggy and mind-numbingly dark metal in equal measures.

http://radiowom.blogspot.com/2017/01/balance-interruption-door-218-review.html

Never underestimate the power of unpredictability. All musical genres are crowded places these days and it seems as if you can’t turn to any category of music without hearing any number of bare-faced copycats simply going through the same motions as their illustrious forebears, frequently offering up the technicality but rarely the innovation. On first listen, Balance Interruption are A.N Other black metal band and the first two minutes or so offers up all the familiar tropes – hyper speed drums, discordant guitars and harrowing shrieks – it’s all present and correct. And then something weird happens. From out of the darkness, a saxophone emerges and ambient elements, hitherto vaguely present in the mix, come to the fore to create a dense, swirling cloud that recalls the similarly innovative work of Ulver and Thorns. The effect is devastating and it becomes immediately apparent that Balance Interruption are far more innovative than their peers, dipping their toes into the murky world of blackened jazz and obsidian electronica with deft skill.

Having so impressively opened the album, ‘door 218’, with the jazz-infused ‘last sunset without sun’, Balance Interrupted then offer up the horrifying title track with its eerie samples and screeching strings. Like Emperor, Balance Interrupted’s skill is to make the most unhinged and savage of sonic assaults sound imperial in scope. Jittery electronics add an extra layer of disturbing noise to the overall sound and it’s clear that Balance Interrupted have a wide-eyed ambition that gives their music considerable depth. A rather more straight forward effort, albeit awash with sparking, damaged synth noise, ‘Not survived to the sentencing’ is a maelstrom of noise that plunges the listener into a dark place before ‘D.U.S.T’, with its arcing, industrial backdrop strips flesh from bone in a dystopian future where humanity has been displaced in scenes reminiscent of the Terminator. Yet, even here, nothing is that straight forward and the band side-slip into a jazz-infused breakdown that sees the sax return to centre stage and Lucifer deal in some seriously intricate bass runs. Razor sharp, ‘Suicidealer’ conjures images of the swinging chains and torn flesh of a Clive Barker torture chamber, the band incorporating the most menacing industrial production this side of a Ministry album into a track that makes the flesh crawl only for the sensual sound of the sax to add credence to the principle of finding pleasure in pain.

With the sun blotted out and the listener ensnared ‘incubatum conveyor’ lays down a massive groove in between the sort of unhinged riffing that makes you fear for the band’s sanity. Once again, the band calmly demonstrate their instrumental prowess, but whilst they are technically proficient, their workouts always serve the song and as the smoky sax once again returns, so the music keeps the listener endlessly guessing as to what will come next. Very much in the traditional black metal vein with its dissonant guitars, ‘morbid soul shelter’ adds in ambient noise that sounds like a satanic cult in full flow before the album reaches its conclusion with the aptly titled ‘hypnoitc eye kult terror’ which mixes up hurtling blast beats and barely audible samples, all of which serves to create a deeply sinister atmosphere that will leave the hairs on the back of your neck standing rigidly to attention.

Released via the estimable Satanath records, Balance Interruption is a fantastically dark record that effectively draws on elements of industrial and black metal to deliver a creepy, dystopian nightmare made flesh. Beautifully packaged in a hand drawn digi-pack and with a unique atmosphere that is all its own, the record is a must-listen for fans of experimental black metal. Whilst the album may feature a huge array of ideas, the band never let these get out of hand and the result is a record that’s short and to the point, delivering its lysergic payload and disappearing leaving the listener disorientated, awakening as if from a terrible nightmare at the album’s conclusion. Dark, cerebral and innovative, this is essential listening.

There are times when you shouldn’t think too much because then you’ll only hurt your head. This is one of these times when I don’t think too much about either the band’s name or the album title. I just accept it for being there. Listening to this I get Norwegian vibes from the 90s and bands like Mysticum and Fleurety, bands that took black metal so far off the beaten track that it was almost unrecognizable. Today we have Deathspell Omega for that. This is off beat black metal in an experimental manner. If you can take that stuff like John Zorn’s Naked City, TV series from the 80s and a whole host of other stuff pops up in your head while listening then do keep listening.

It's always interesting to hear bands blend black metal with jazz, especially when it's done right. Such is the case with Ukraine's Balance Interruption: a band that was completely anonymous to me, until Aleksey from Satanath Records requested a review. Balance Interruption is not afraid to experiment and push boundaries, blending various elements to formulate their own sound. This is experimental black metal of the most abrasive kind, delivered with a strong performance. Every song is like a nightmarish roller coaster, as you have no idea where it's going to take you. With a purposeful lack of repetition, it's chaotic and beautiful, while never losing a degree of subtlety and cohesion. Door 218 is a rather solid offering of idiosyncratic black metal.

Balance Interrveption- Door 218: Hailing from the Ukraine Balance Interrvption is a mixture of Industrial and Black Metal in approach. You can definitely hear the Black Metal influences yet there is so much dimension to each track with real instrumentation such as the Saxophone stylings of Dragon on this CD in track one. Yes it keeps true to the blistering Black Metal but yet has so much complexity and depth. A must have in your extreme metal collection.

Long story short: my friend Alexey asked me for some more reviews from his label and after a quick look at the thick pile of discs to work on, I quickly realized being strangely attracted to the style of the cover and back artwork of this digipack CD without knowing an ounce about this band. I decided to write about it and only later did I find out it is the product of a Ukrainian act with another two albums behind. I got surprised why it's still placed at such a low level of popularity and esteem in the world's rankings of the aficionados of Black Metal. Sure, it doesn't deliver furious, traditional and ultrafast tunes all the time, but is it a crime? Not in my opinion, because I believe there are some days that we need total annihilating music and others when we long to approach something pioneering and progressive. I don't know if it's the same with Balance Interruption's previous material, still what I know for sure is that here the experimental or at least not TRUE Black Metal structures take 50-60% of the song, and that's a big step forward to stand out in comparison with most copycat underground combos belonging to the vast Black Metal world. Most of the innovations are obtained by recurring to a sax, but there are Electro, Noise elements, spoken inserts and a few more particularities, which, together with the relatively brief average length of every song (5 minutes), contribute it to make it a record easy to listen and imbibe.

Black Metal with ultra-deep Electro beats inserts and screeching noises in the mid-tempos is what's to be found is "Last Sunset Without Sun", as well as sax solos in a sad Jazz pattern and a guitar stroking martially before a Black Metal fugue, assorted demented screams. When the main part returns there are Black Metal shrieks and Death Metal growls blended perfectly, and there's room for another sax solo in the end while the Electro beats dissolve into oblivion.

A row in Ukrainian opens the title track, whereas the bass paints its way before modern Electro beats pop out in a deviated or acid manner. The raging and rapid Black Metal blastbeat comes back, the Electro sounds deliver an extraterrestrial mood until the bass goes solo in the middle of the track preceding a Jazz odd rhythm dominated by a dreamy sax with the addition of noises from a consumed vinyl, until a guitar briefly appears and the Ukrainian man from the initial movie sample starts complaining again.

"Not Survived to the Sentencing" is brutal Black enriched by screams, keys piercing the brain during the vicious blasts, a scorching axe solo, a horrifying finalè with macabre sounds, noises of chains, a lock being turned, and a voice that bodes ill.

The epitome of a variety of powerful and fierce Industrial Groovy Black Metal, "D.U.S.T.", alternates mid-tempos with obliterating blast-beats where the bass is constantly distinct; absolutely divine is the situation-changing of Techno Thrash Metal put before the Black Metal part resurfaces; a desperate voice not typical for this genre, a break and a bridge loyal to BM, an erotic Jazz breakdown, several frantic time changes are what awaits the listener till a scary ending brings without interruptions to "Suicidealer", a song growing gradually and exploding radically until punishing hasty chunks of Death Metal arrive, followed by crunchy Death Metal frames diverse from the ones just heard. Then it's time for quick parts with hammering noises alà Nailbomb go Black doing meth! A shower of effective Electro noises comes, as well as effected voices, on which screams are added on. A Jazz Rock portion with the sax waits for voices from the otherworld, then blastbeats complete the composition along with emergency siren sounds, tired and melancholic voices of adults and kids, whose effect is enhanced by Sovietic church singing.

Another track that goes fast and destructive from the early seconds is "Incubatum Conveyor", only to turn as Funk as the early Red Hot Chilli Peppers could; of course here there's much more: the intervention of the sax and later the crushing refrain repeated paroxysmally; the following stubborn Electro blastbeats are soon followed by assorted key sounds and a Black Metal where the drummer delivers an exquisite performance in different ways until the Electro beats and key touches reappear and the obsessive double-voiced refrain, too.

Concocting traditional, wraithlike and rotten ingredients respectively, "Morbid Soul Shelter" shows its ugly/beautiful face, severed by Dark Electro beats soloing and continuing with the rest of the instruments and vocals right away. Afterwards people do have to get prepared to the finest effected vocals of the whole album, stressed out by bass strokes that go on until the near conclusion.

Bass and frozen riffs, guitar trilling and drumming both human and Electro are the characteristics of the dynamic "Hypnotik Eye Kult Terror", a song that takes the traditional Black and gives it a modernized twisted edge; lots of variations, discordant mutations, stops, malfunctioning system sounds, an original guitar solo, swift accelerations, a final where the hypnotist orders the patient not to move matched with a prolonged low noise appear to be the most important traits of the second half of the song.

Fans of dissonant, shrieking, apocalyptic, anti-human pitch-black Avantgarde Black Metal outfits such as Dødheimsgard, Red Harvest, Shining (NOR), Ulver, Thorns, Absu, Sigh, Tartaros, latter Emperor and the likes, together with Mayhem die-harders, Dark Ambient and Electro connoisseurs, Naked City and Painkiller maniacs should all equally appreciate these brave, smart and well-composed 8 tracks, even if they come from divergent musical backgrounds and will have each different favourite compositions and passages within the almost 40 minutes of "Door 218".
