The is the debut EP from the Costarican band CULTO NEGRO. This band features member and ex - members of other local bands such as CORPSE GARDEN, PAGANUS DOCTRINA and DEMENCIA. With such line-up encompassing Crossover, Death and Black Metal bands, one would expect something totally different than what CULTO NEGRO is all about: blackened Speed / Thrash Metal with some Punk and D-Beat influences, such as AURA NOIR, early WITCHERY, HELLHAMMER and some THE EXPLOITED mixed in. The music itself is intense, relentless, frantic and delivered with rawness and aggression. Perfect examples of this can be heard in songs such as 'El Alma Sellada' and 'T.H.S.'. The songwriting is not bringing anything new to the table, but its straight forward approach is spot on and the the whole atmosphere is so thick it could be cut with a knife. My fave song is 'La Electrica Dependencia'. Words cannot describe the intensity of this song. It instantly reminded me of early SLAYER. The other songs are equally good, but this one has that "thing" that just hit me upon first listening. The vocal performance of D.N. is great, combining manic yells with deep grunts and everything in between. Vorago and AntiChristopher, drums and bass respectively, deliver a complex, yet solid and tight base for Juan C and Alejandro C's riffing. In my humble opinion, the guitar department could use some improvement. The riffs are excellent and style-defining, but some of them lack attitude and the leads are somewhat uninteresting. All in all, CULTO NEGRO has managed to add their own twist to a somewhat overdone and redundant genre of Metal. I look forward to their next material. And so should you.

More South American blackthrash in the Hell’s Headbangers vein, this time hailing from Costa Rica.
This one bears a similar production style to that of Vomit of Doom, albeit with less hissiness or signal bleed. In other words, a clear, very dry mix that seems more suited to vinyl than CD, but a few steps up from the aforementioned band’s latest.
The band themselves also acquit themselves far better than their Argentinian peers, with a damn sight more variation from track to track, old school Brazilian blackthrash-style riffs galore, hyperspeed but never out of control drumming, a thick (if often a bit too atonally inclined in the clinches) guitar tone and black metallish vocals that would fit perfectly if there were less reverb and/or doubling utilized.
In other words, when it’s a single voice without a hell of a lot of digital processing, it works. Too bad they chose to get cute with it.
Loved the riffing, which was evocative of everything from Witchtrap (Col) and early Slayer (naturally) to Holocausto and early Sepultura…possibly with a touch of Mutilator to boot (!) And how the hell often do you hear those guys referenced?
Keep the vox a bit less fast and loose, amigos. You don’t need all that fancy-ass processing, reverb and slap echo, it’s only hurting ya.
On the whole, horns way the fuck up.

In recent months I seem to have fallen into a habit of including at least one track from a release by Satanath Records or their affiliated label Symbol of Domination in these Shades of Black features. And that’s because their taste in black metal seems to run closely parallel to some of my own. And this Sunday is no different.
This next song is by the Costa Rican band Culto Negro and it comes off their debut EP Abismal Speed Metal — which gets gold stars for truth in advertising. The song is “Saturno Devorado”, and it’s evil through and through — first with one electrifying riff and then with a second one taking over after a quick break. The vocals, in Spanish, are wild as mustangs and filthy as sin. Hot shit.
Abismal Speed Metal will be co-released by Symbol of Domination and Spiritismo Rekords on October 15 in a jewelcase CD with a 12-page booklet.
Заводной трэш на испанском языке и c большим количеством "грязи" в звучании - это, конечно, очень интересно. И несмотря на позитивное настроение материала, музыка не лишена оголтелости, которая больше всего выражается в корявой игре гитаристов, особенно в моментах с соляками. Тем не менее, у меня совершенно нет сомнений в том, что ошибки сделаны нарочно, либо музыканты просто посчитали, что в таком духе материал будет выглядеть тболее привлекательно. Подобный вывод напрашивается, исходя из того, что ритм-секция, вопреки гитарному риффингу, звучит очень четко и без каких-либо огрехов. Чего только стоит игра басиста, который не просто дергает струны под такты, а еще и грамотно выводит кое=какие мелодии, вселяя в музыку самый настоящий налет спид-метала 80-х. Даже название этого альбома намекает на подобный настрой, что, собственно, вполне себе правильно. В те далекие времена умели люди делать чуть ли не шедевральные вещи, практически не умея играть по правилам, на чем Culto Negro и пытаются выехать. Правда, на записи все же прослеживается какой-никакой профессионализм музыкантов, отчего немного потеряна самая изюминка подобных альбомов - их искренность и неповторимость. Тем не менее, "Abismal Speed Metal" вполне можно назвать сильным дебютом молодого коллектива, а если еще и не заострять внимание на нарочитых "косяках", то будет сложно найти аналогии с другими альбомами нашего времени. По крайней мере, в данном жанре. Плюс ко всему, радует оформление, выдержанное немного в дэт-металлическом ключе, но со своей подвально-сатанинской идеей. Думаю, если попытаться еще глубже изучить альбом и саму банду, то можно даже открыть для себя что-то новое из металла, прилетевшего откуда-то из Центральной Америки.

Posle singla ''Saturno devorador'' koji su objavili sredinom 2015. godine. Culto Negro nam prestavlja aktuelno EP izdanje izdato prošle godine pod etiketom Symbol of Domination prod. Izdanje nosi ime ''Abismal speed metal'' i broji sedam pesama.
Jako brzo i NE našminkano izdanje, rifologija koja gazi kao gusnice tenka i sirovi/štrokavi vokali koji se meni lično i ne sviđaju previše. Ali poruka ovog izdanja je jasno i to nam se predočava već u prvoj pesmi po imenu ''Sobre los mares subconscientes''. Numera grune svom snagom i ispljuje vam se u facu.
Stiče se utisak da ovo izdanje ne uzima predaha ni časa, (Ep je spakovan u brutalnih 20 minuta) izuzetno brzi ritmovi ispraćeni ne previše kompleksnim ali izuzetno zaraznim rifovima, za koje već rekoh da su masivni i da prosto gaze. Želeo bih da izdvojim neke od pesama kao favorite ali prosto ne mogu. Čini mi se da su sve podjednake i da igraju u istoj ligi. Na kraju mislim da bih ovom izdanju dao i ocenu više, ali zbog ne tako angažovanog i meni lično nedopadljivog vokala, daću sledeću ocenu...

Culto Negro are a band from Costa Rica that plays a mixture of black, thrash, and speed metal and this is a review of their 2016 ep "Abismal Speed Metal" which was released as a joint effort between Symbol Of Domination Productions and Spiritismo Rekords.
A very heavy thrash influenced style starts off th ep along with soem high pitched screams a few seconds later and the riffs also bring in a decent amount of melody and speed metal elments and while the music is very heavily rooted in the 80's it still sounds modern a nd the faster sections also bring in blast beats.
All of the musical instruments on the recording have a very powerful sound to them while the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and the solos and leads also add in more of an old school style and some of the vocals also add in a touch of first wave black metal along with a few death metal growls and all of the songs stick to a very heavy musical direction.
Culto Negro plays a musical style that takes black, speed, and thrash metal and mixes them together to create a sound of their own, the production sounds very old school while the lyrics are written in Spanish and cover Spiritualism, Occultism, Witchery and Drugs themes.
In my opinion Culto Negro are a very great sounding mixture of black, thrash, and speed metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band.

Nothing says speed metal with a blackened, thrashing edge like Costa Rica, yeah? No? Whatever. Culto Negro is a rather recently founded band, whose CD EP on Symbol of Domination, a sublabel of Satanath Records, dropped in September of 2016. Abismal Speed Metal is pretty upfront with what it is about, what with the black and white, drawn cover featuring a devil emerging from the ground on a graveyard from a suspicious looking, occult symbol on the ground.
During one period in the 90s this style was sometimes called “old school black metal”. Then, it was represented by such bands as Norway’s Aura Noir. To speak of speed metal with strong black metal and thrash influences probably makes more sense. Culto Negro combines much of the music of thrashier, older bands with the sense of authenticity and extremism characteristic of the second wave black metal fanatics.
Among the many bands listed as influences on the release page on Satanath’s website we find Absu, which is an excellent point. Much like Absu, one of this reviewer’s absolutely favorite bands in any category, some of the stupidity which always, rightly or wrongly, can be associated with “old school” thrash and speed metal isn’t here. This is more real, in some very difficult to define way.
The vocals must be highlighted for at least two reasons. First of all they are in Spanish, which somehow meshes very well with the rabid hysteria and aggression that drip from them like spilled guaro. Somewhere, there is a feeling that this would not be even half as good with different vocals. As things stand, they are an almost constant feature of the music, so it’s difficult to imagine it without them. That statement connects to the second point – the lyrics are long and developed, much like Absu’s, and their themes seem original and interesting. Unfortunately, the Spanish skills at Archaic Triad aren’t sufficient to make much sense of them, but a quote from the aforementioned page provides a clue. If they are as the music, they are “based on the occult, witchery, drugs, street, violence and the most PURE HATRED to everything established by the system.”
The all but unreadable logo serves to take this EP over the finish line. When you’re done knife fighting your way through Limón, your body covered in protective seals copied in blood from ancient tomes, you’d do well to invest a bunch of your hard-stolen cash in this little gem of ABISMAL SPEED METAL!

Repartons au Costa Rica, à Heredia, pour découvrir CULTO NEGRO. Existant depuis 2014, ce jeune groupe publia un single deux titres « Saturno Devorador » en décembre 2015. Sa seconde réalisation est le présent EP sorti au début de l’automne 2016. Il propose cinq nouveaux morceaux ainsi que les deux de 2015. Un thrash black metal sans concession règne en maître absolu à tous les niveaux. Par ailleurs, une aura old school émane de l’ensemble avec des paroles écrites dans la langue maternelle du quintet. Les costa riciens apprécient les excès de vitesse et accélèrent même le rythme en cours de route comme sur « T.H.S. ». Hormis le démarrage posé de « El Alma Sellada », le court ralentissement trompeur sur « La Electrica Dependencia » et la fausse fin de « Saturno Devorador », il n’y a pas de répit au rendez-vous. Le groupe s’avère toujours énervé et pressé avec des compositions courtes (sept en vingt minutes dont trois en dessous des deux minutes trente). Vous avez un côté speed thrash via « Sobre Los Mares Subconscientes ». Deux voix interviennent sur « Inversa La Estrella ». Le plus expéditif et énervé du lot « Ulcera Estigma» n’a pas de solo. Un EP qui s’adresse seulement aux amateurs du genre.

Culto Negro to kapela z Kostaryki, której nazwa obiła mi się jakiś czas temu o uszy. Wiedziałem czego należy się po tych panach spodziewać i w zasadzie się nie zawiodłem. Epka „Abismal Speed Metal” to dwadzieścia minut (siedem kawałków) szybkiego thrash/black metalu z całym asortymentem sprawdzonych, i przemielonych przez wiele kapel z tego gatunku, patentów. Słucha się jednak tego przyjemnie pomimo, że nie da się nie odnieść wrażenia, że to wszystko już było. Odgrzewany kotlet w postaci materiału Culto Negro smakuje jednak zaskakująco dobrze. Jedyne co denerwowało mnie na tym wydawnictwie to wokal, który momentami sprawiał wrażenie, że chce pokazać więcej niż potrafi co wychodziło niestety na jego niekorzyść. Po materiale nazwanym po prostu „Abismal Speed Metal” chyba nikt się rewolucji nie spodziewał ale myślę, że fani szybkich thrashowych strzałów okraszonych blackowym charakterem powinni być w miarę zadowoleni.

"Culto Negro" iz Kostarike u svojom muzici kombinuju simpliciranost prvog blekerskog talasa i sirovost starog spid-treša. Rezultat svega toga je izdanje koje se ne vodi trendovima i koje će andergraund metal veterane podsetiti na "stara, dobra vremena, kada je sve bilo bolje i iskrenije nego sada". Solaže kidaju, vokali me iritiraju, dok je ostatak i više nego korektan. Ovakvu muziku više volim da čujem uživo, dok sa sigurne udaljenosti pijem pivce i gledam mlade snage kako se šutiraju uz avetinjske rifove iz prošlosti. "Abysmal Speed Metal" je solidan i ništa više sem toga.

Черный культ собирает под свои знамена
Зловещий образчик трэш-блака из Коста-рики. Сдается мне, что там знают, как варить настоящие составы для ценителей черного звука. Фишка в том, что здесь собрались пять человек - дабы заделать свою бочку темной анти-музыкальной чертовщины. В назидание потомкам, если таковые будут. Эти люди уже известны на блэковой сцене центральной америки (да и не только) и их можно было видеть под баннерами групп Demencia, Corpse Garden (диск этой команды Сатанат выпускал, и у меня есть диск - см. отклик http://resurgam.ucoz.ru/blog/corpse_garden_entheogen_..), Paganus Doctrina, Fornost, Cold Grim, From Oblivion).
А жизнь кипит...
Формация выпускала до этого сингл в 15-ом году, а так - усиленно гастролирует. Вот только недавно отыграла в одном из концертов, где рубились 8 местных групп. Вообще, поизучав их социальные сети заметил, что банда с большим удовольствием выходит на сцену, дабы обрушить на головы фэнов экстрима, свой собственную блэко-трешевую стену звука. Тем более указанный стиль муЗЛА - самый для этого подходящий.
Abismal Speed Metal
Так группа назвала свой альбом, и в этом есть большой и зловещий смысл, ибо как всегда речь в нем идет об оккультизме, ведьминских ритуалах и вообще колдовстве. Целая бездна мрака разверзается перед слушателем этого альбома, пропасть смачного микса стилей, дающего отличный зубодробительный и головоломный эффект.
Возьму я в руки гитару любимую...
Темпово начинают Culto Negro, да так собственно и гонят весь альбом, таким ультра-олдовым трешем, который еще не оперился в такие формы, как например, траки Тестамент, а будто бы вот только из яиц вылупились мелкие тираннозавры, и очень шустро маячат по заявленному пространству, только не растут, не становятся миролюбивее и приглаженнее... Как у некоторых... Эти создания, отлично проспиртовались и сохраняют первобытную злобу и активность. А помогает в этом как раз блэковая составляющая этого проекта.
Утоли мои печали
Быстро отрабатывает ритм-секция, и туда же валят свои соляки струнники, пилорамно и очень даже конструктивно, такие солячки - аж закачаешься (трак 2 2.50 и далее). Что-то давно не слышали мы такого спид-металла, и вот соскучились вовремя, когда есть продукт для утоления сего желания. Гитарист - отчаянный мастер своего дела, и когда вжигает свою партию, то прямо видно, что искры летят у него из под медиатора.
Берут качеством
Тут семь траков - не больших, но очень злобарьских, такие недлинные гимны эзотерической практике. Такая колдовская технология позволяет сжимать послания, вкладывая в их законченные формы максимум демонизма и экспрессии.
Black metal? Black Magic!
Все это горит на быстром огне эмоции вокалиста, который пышет здесь пламенем очень по-взрослому, например в отдельных местах напоминая отработку Шамаате из достославного шведского Арканума.
Человек с таким голосом и возможностями - большая находка для экстремальной металлической группы, так что неудивительно, что еще несколько команд приглашают его поучаствовать. С его помощью реализовывается настоящая местная версия ритуала, не хуже любого другого из гримуаров великих мистиков прошлого.

For one reason or another, Satanath Records and sub-label Symbol Of Domination Productions have some secret passion for the Costa Rican Extreme Metal scene. Both labels did release material from acts like Colemesis, Inhuman, Assailant and Ubiquitous Realities, The Eyes Of Desolation, Alastor Sanguinary Embryo, Ancient Spheres, Corpse Garden, or international act Black Whispers (which does include a member from that Middle-American country – otherwise it would be quite stupid to refer to them, is it not?!). Within that list, Culto Negro do appear too. Culto Negro are a young formation with experienced members (cf. their involvement in bands such as Paganus Doctrina or Corpse Garden). Recordings created by most of higher mentioned bands have been reviewed by undersigned in the past, so if there might be any interest: enter the band’s name to find out…
Anyway, this quintet released a digital two-track single at the very end of 2015 (it has been re-released independently on CD too afterwards in an extremely limited edition as a collector’s item), and both pieces reappear on Abismal Speed Metal too. The seven (relatively short) tracks were recorded, mixed and mastered at the famous Cavan Studio (think Bufonic, Paganus Doctrina, Advent Of Bedlam, Insepulto, Assailant etc.) with Isak Arroyo being the guy who was allowed to play with the knobs on that mixing panel… The result, therefor, is a great professional sound quality, holding the middle in between the fine-tuned essence of the modern equipment, and the rawness that characterises the sonic identity of the band.
Abismal Speed Metal indeed stands for Speed Metal, mixed with huge doses of Black Metal, and hints of Thrash and Heavy Metal from the Old School. Fast and energetic riffs and rhythms are like the spine, supported by venomous and blood-spitting screams and piercing solos and leads. The rhythm section (drums, bass guitars and rhythm guitars) is quite brutal, yet it withholds a crafted eye for melodious details. In combination with the lead parts, it’s not that unimaginable if earlier Possessed do come to mind.
Two other surpluses, besides the professional craftsmanship of the musicians and the correct sound quality (and I did not mention the appropriate artwork either, done by Alan Corpse of Leprous Hands Arts), are the not-a-joke attitude at the one hand, and the variation in tempo at the other. Okay, of course the better part is speed-up, violently fast, even blasting from time to time. The drum patterns and the fire-breathing solos strengthen this element. But more than once, everything decelerates, leaving you with the opportunity to respire. And with that ‘not-a-joke attitude’ thing I am referring to the band’s identity. Culto Negro are not like a fun-band, or a bunch of friends, jamming together, playing covers to pay tribute to their heroes. No, it’s quite clear that these guys take it quite serious. ‘Quite’ serious, and not ‘too serious’, for still it’s their joy to play f*cked-up Music, paying honour to the roots of Extreme Metal.

If the album title isn’t a declaration of intent then this is so off the wall that they should be ashamed and crawl down a hole and stay there. But everything about this release speaks old school. This could very well be “highlight of the week”. Not the highlight of the week this is still a cool slice of old school metal. I wish that the tempo had been insanely fast and that everything had been turned up to twelve. Still a solid piece of old school deathrash that can be spun both a second and third time or even a fifth or sixth one.

Gratísima sorpresa me lleve con esta banda oriunda de Heredia, Costa Rica, con este EP que es su debut absoluto.
Culto Negro, formada por Christopher Chavarría en bajo, Erick Mejía en batería, Juan C. y Alejandro C. en guitarras, y Daniel Arroyo en voz, despliega un black / thrash bien agresivo y old-school, con influencias que van desde Possessed hasta Slayer, mechando a estos referentes con algunos elementos del hardcore y del crust, dándonos como resultante una banda de sonido muy similar al de los americanos Absu.
El punto fuerte de “Abismal speed metal” es sin dudas la temática lírica, con temas tan interesantes como el ocultismo, la brujería y el espiritismo, amén de otras un tanto más terrenales como la violencia y las drogas.
Una verdadera pena no saber en que anda la banda actualmente (su Facebook carece de información), ya que suenan de forma segura y profesionales, y por sobre todo muy promisorios. Altamente recomendado.
