Colombian Thrash Metal outfit BRAIN DAMAGED started back in 2007. It was until 2012 that they put out their first material, namely the "Dosis De Metal" EP. When a friend of mine recommended me the EP, I gave it a chance, but it didn't spark my interest. Fast forward to 2016 and their debut album "Nación Infecta". And when I saw a chance to review it, I dived into it. Sincerely, I was expecting something similar to their debut EP, but this time BRAIN DAMAGED has proven me wrong. This is one hell of an album. It has its ups and downs, but overall, I really enjoyed it. Let me get the bad stuff out of the way first: they need to improve their leads. They are somewhat un-inspiring and / or sloppy. Second and last: the production. I really don't know if these guys were going for a vintage or retro style or if they had some limited resources. But I found it really hard to sit through the whole thing upon first listening. The sound is kinda hollow and muddy and it can get really annoying. Specially the snare drum and the rhythm guitars. The bass sits right in the middle of that, so it helps to fill in for the lack of low frequencies. So, after getting used to that, the songs really deliver. Intense, mid to fast paced, in your face Thrash Metal like it is supposed to be. The South American influence is undeniable. I mean, think of the thrashier side of ATOMIC AGGRESSOR and DEATH YELL mixed with some modern hints. They also sing in their native language, which I think is really cool. There is a lot of social and political issues dealt with here, as in early SACRED REICH. Curious enough the vocal performance reminded me of Phil Rind with some Mille thrown in there. Thrash Metal has had its return in the last decade or so and it seems there are thousands of bands doing exactly the same. It feels like a formula. But BRAIN DAMAGED has managed to create something that, although is Thrash Metal in essence, has a lot of their own sound and identity to differentiate from countless others. A band to look out for in the future for sure. Kudos to Symbol Of Domination Productions for releasing this LP.

Предельно энергичный колумбийский трэш от Brain Damaged не может не радовать также своей виртуозностью. Помимо разнообразных темпов, очень впечатляет гитарист, который бодро высекает из своего инструмента как тяжелые риффы, так и скоростные соляки, при этом не стесняясь разбавлять свою игру милыми, акустическими переборами. Весь материал записан в откровенно олдовом стиле, отчего все звучит хоть и не как у фирмовых банд, но очень живо, а благодаря лирической части можно, даже не зная истории коллектива, определить его примерное местоположение. Агрессивное латиноамериканское рычание вокалиста, то и дело сопровождаемое выкриками других музыкантов, придает альбому какую-то своею изюминку, хоть немного, но выделяя группу из ряда подобных. Сама же лирика носит социально-политический подтекст, чего, в общем-то, по обложке не определить. Но несмотря на столь серьезные темы, материал перенасыщен чуть ли не рок-н-рольным настроением, где даже иногда можно найти некоторую связь с кроссовером, который в свое время был популярен в районах Нью-Йорка. Но все же при всех ярко выраженных плюсах, "Nación Infecta" также страдает кое-какими недостатками. В частности, это очень заметная разорванность, при чем разорванность не материала как такового. По музыке все отлично, и никаких границ не нарушено, а вот запись у каждого трека заметно отличается. И хотя во всех ситуациях звук мне понравился, но слушая такое разнообразие на одном диске, невольно ловишь себя на мысли, что это не альбом, а компиляция. По сути, так оно и есть, ведь песни были записаны в разный период, но по каким-то причинам не были реализованы в качестве демок. Конечно же, хорошо, что все было сохранено вплоть до наших дней и наконец-то получило жизнь на настоящем носителе. Удовольствие от альбома получить вполне реально. Олдовые трэшеры оценят!

Oddly, they actually cover Ray Charles’ “mess around” (altering the lyrics slightly to “thrash around” and exhorting fans to “bang your head” in the process). Even more amusingly…it works.
Sure, it ain’t perfect. But this sort of thing, the basic sound they’re working off here? Is why people love South American blackthrash, folks.

Dakle u pitanju je trešerica koja će leći ko šamar budali svim fanovima Kreatora , Nuclear Assault, Sodom... Mogu da kažem da thrash metal strašno interesantno zvuči na njihovom maternjem jeziku. Colombian Thrash-trio, Brain Damaged, was born in 2007 and has finally got their debut album out, titled Nación infecta. The album offers 10 songs of old-school-tinged Thrash Metal that takes its influences from both American (mostly melodies) and European (filthiness and rawness) past Thrash Metal scenes. Brain Damaged's slightly blackened, ferocious, raw and punky Thrash Metal is, for the most part anyway, just "ok", but at times it gets just sloppy and incoherent despite all the speed and aggression that they are able to deliver pretty well through their songs. The DIY-type of production doesn't help much either; especially the drum sound is pretty thin and powerless. Plus, the use of different types of intros/outros in the songs is rather pointless, cutting the important ferociousness away from their music that otherwise seems to be an integral part of the band's sound. The only instrument that is mixed in a sufficient enough way here is the bass, which got enough power behind it in the final mix.
I don't know... It's always, of course, a nice thing to check out new bands from all over the world, but these Colombians unfortunately lack a thing or two to make any bigger impression on me this time. Better luck next time.

Thraaaaaaaaaaaaash!! Impiedoso e sem contemplações. "Nación Infecta" é a estreia dos colombianos Brain Damaged e é bastante simples. Thrash. Pronto, é isto. Obrigado por terem vindo até à próxima. O quê? Não chega? Hum... mas a verdade é que não muito mais a dizer. A proposta, como o título poderá indicar, é cantado em castelhano (excepção feita para uma versão alucinada para "Mess Around" de Ray Charles, aqui rebaptizada como "Thrash Around") e este power-trio vai buscar inspiração não só aos seus pares sul-americanos como também se nota uma costela bem sodomiana. Qualquer fã de thrash metal não terá problemas em mergulhar neste trabalho embora admitamos que dificilmente perdurá nas nossas memórias - a não ser pela tenebrosa capa. É thrash, só isso é positivo. O resto é história.

Ktoś zamawiał kolumbijski thrash? Nie? Tak myślałem. Też nie zamawiałem a dostałem Brain Damaged i ich debiutancki materiał „Nación infecta”. Nie wiem co sobie panowie myśleli tworząc tę okładkę ale jeśli miało być śmiesznie to nie wyszło. Muzycznie mamy tu dość surowo podany energiczny thrash spod znaku Toxic Holocaust. Jest więc tu sporo przebojowości i zadziorności. Przy tym wszystkim jest też moc i agresja, a więc wszystko na swoim miejscu. Słucha się tego całkiem przyjemnie o ile nie założymy sobie jakiś dużych wymagań. Ot płyta do potupania nogą i posłuchania bez większych ekscytacji. Jeśli nie przeszkadza wam brud i lubicie proste podejście do tematu to jest szansa, że podejdzie wam ta kapela.

Когда я слышу словосочетание «колумбийский треш-металл», то мои руки сами тянутся к … регулятору громкости. Да, многие на самом деле это заметили. Есть такая взаимосвязь на каком-то внутреннем уровне фиксации.
Что и доказывает в очередной раз, - в этот раз группа Brain Damaged. Обитая в Боготе, команда десять лет назад собралась для того, чтобы показать миру кое-какие адские приемчики игры на гитаре, озвучить ряд мыслей (судя по трекам этих мыслей было 10 )) ). Если добавить, что это собственно дебютный полноформат группировки, то можно уже априори предполагать, что идеи будут вынесены толковые да зрелые.
Олдскул-треш ваяет Brain Damaged — озлобленный, безбашенный и норовистый. Но когда композер дает специальный знак рукой — гитристы начинают отливать мелодические пули, с нетривиальными идеями. Не зря ребята возились с аппаратом на репах, не зря вокаллер орал в микрофон. Команда, как опытный реаниматор, возрождает самые корневые истоки )) стиля, будто бы ныряет в прошлое, и подглядывает за его зарождением. И сейчас на отдельно взятом диске показывает нам, как было дело...
Еще замечу, что в те недобрые старые времена, треш миксовался с павером и хэви, параллельно выращивая в гигантских пробирках для своих инфернальных опытов с поклонниками лишние ноги, руки да и, впрочем, головы — именно все это будет впоследствии утрачено в процессе звукоизвлечения, стейдждайвинга и прочих сопутствующий мероприятий. Свою бы голову удержать на плечах.
Потому Brain Damaged настроен рубить хэви-треш, иногда спид-метал-треш, размашистые и широкие, - как косой замахивается композер в направлении небольших пространств, теплого воздуха и атмосферы подвальных концертов. Когда на глазах изумленных и ...евших зрителей рождался новый стиль!!! И потому, когда сквозь хэви-риффинг пробивается атомная поступь трешевого риффа, то металлюги неистово орут, беснуются, трясут хаером — на полную катушку вкушают олдового саунда, получают истинное и непревзойденное удовольствие.
В самом деле Brain Damaged ценны именно таким своим подходом, давая возможность сегодняшнему слушателю оказаться в начале 80-х. И тут в подмогу им их относительная молодость — соответственно им веришь, как воплощенным героям тогдашней волны треша. Были бы они завзятыми металлюгами с десятком альбомов, то издание такое бы прокатило за нездоровый цинизм)) и откровенную спекуляцию. Здесь же ничего такого не фиксируется. Наоборот, - четкая визуализация зарождающегося стиля налицо - «науши»)).
И потому гитары бестиально отчетливы, и проламывают пол своим звуком из колонок, из которых еще звучал Битлз, ритм-секция цепляет меломана своей честностью, в смысле прозрачностью того, что барабаннер играет сам, а не держит в кармане персональный компьютер с проводами)). И вокалист не форсирует, а уверено опирается на свои вокальные данные, хотя при необходимости дает четкого угара. Действительно трешевого и убойного. Все здесь по-настоящему и потому подкупает.
Я думаю, олдскул-металлист смахнет суровую слезу, которая скользнет по усам.
Brain Damaged не ограничился всеми указанными музыкальными «аксессуарами» молодого треша, к тому же в догон соорудил 12-страничный буклет, оформленный совершенно в традициях старой школы. Все реально!

Ali, da ne grešim dušu, ima ovde zaista sjajnih momenata, ponajviše zbog toga što i pored ne baš najbolje produkcije ovaj trojac ostavlja dojam ekipe koja se dobro zabavlja radeći ono što voli. Kao dva velika plusa bih izdvojio bas koji je trebalo da bude glasniji, jer gura neku svoju priču koja je opako dobra i solaže koje se uz muziku i atmosferu uklapa taman kako treba. Mit „Nación infecta“ schickte sich 2016 die kolumbianische Band Brain Damaged an ihr erstes Album zu veröffentlichen. 10 Songs finden sich darauf, die dem Hörer gut 45 Minuten Thrash Metal um die Ohren knallen.
Der Sound des Albums ist recht gut mit klarem und differenziertem Sound, der sich hier und da ein paar dreckige Kanten bewahrt hat was ziemlich gut zur Musik der Band passt, die Elemente aus verschiedenen Thrash-Spielarten vereint. Dabei wechselt sich vor allem der klassische Thrash mit schnellen, präzisen Riffs und stürmischem Drumming mit sehr groovigen, bisweilen pogoartigen Passagen ab und machen so ordentlich Bock auf Bewegung. Über die Sprache hinaus gelingt es der Band auch immer mal wieder ihrer Musik einen leichten südamerikanischen Touch mit auf den Weg zu geben, der ziemlich gut ins Album passt. Die Band bricht immer wieder aus ihrem Sound aus, schiebt mal sehr langsame und ruhige Parts ein oder liefert mit „Thrash Around“ eine Hommage an Ray Charles. Dabei brechen die Jungs nie zu weit aus, setzen zwar einige Akzente in andere Richtungen, bleiben aber dem eher klassisch angehauchten Thrash treu. Die Vocals liegen überwiegend an der Schwelle von Thrash und Death mit tiefem, aggressiven Gesang, bekommt aber oft Unterstützung durch klareren Gesang, mal ein- mal mehrstimmig. Die 45 Minuten des Albums sind gefüllt mit fetten Thrash-Brettern, die kraftvoll und groovend nach vorne dreschen und den Hörer mit viel Energie und Spielfreude mitreißen.
Wer auf klassischen Thrash Metal mit dicker Groove-Schlagseite abfährt, der sollte Brain Damaged mal ein Ohr schenken, denn was die Jungs auf „Nación infecta“ runterreißen ist richtig stark und macht Bock auf mehr auch wenn sie nicht zu den innovativsten Vertretern des Genres gehören. In diesem Sinne: Thrash around – everybody’s doin it – Thrash around!

For some reasons I get good vibes from this one. It can be that I’ve heard their music already, the name is so familiar, or it might just be that it oozes of 80s feelings. Whatever the reasons might be I really hope that this is going to be a really cool run through a thrash back. Colombia is to me much more death and black than thrash. I don’t think I’ve heard that many Colombian thrash metal bands over the years. But this one thrashes like there is no tomorrow. Old school in sound this is the kind of thrash that came with the German attack of the 80s.

I BRAIN DAMAGED sono una band colombiana formatasi nel 2007 che raggiunge una formazione stabile nel 2012 con il trio composto da: Alejandro Reyes Peña – Bass, Cesar Andres Lozano Clavijo – Guitar & Vocals, Nicolás Velandia Triana – Drums.
Propongono il loro primo album NACION INFECTA (registrato alla fine del 2016), che come il titolo lascia presumere, contiene liriche in spagnolo. Il trio di Bogotà propone un buon thrash senza compromessi, privo di virtuosismi ma molto pungente. L’insolita copertina raffigura i nostri seduti in una “sala del potere” che sorseggiano “rum”. Il disco inizia con l’intro SATURNUS, una marcetta densa di atmosfere malvagie che vaticina il male che sta per abbattersi su l’ascoltatore. FALSOS PROFETAS, la seconda traccia, ne è la dimostrazione sonora. Come se non bastasse, la terza traccia, MUERTO EN VIDA (che parte con un melodico arpeggio) è un'altra mazzata. La quarta traccia invece è un geniale rifacimento in chiave thrash di mess around del grande Ray Charles, riproposta con il titolo THRASH AROUND. Vi sconvolgerà i padiglioni auricolari (e poi non dite che non eravate stati avvertiti). Quando vorresti rifiatare arriva la quinta traccia MANIPULACION che contiene riff di chiara ispirazione slayeriana. TERRORISMO SIN CONTROL è un altro pezzo molto potente e brutale in puro old school thrash e la successiva HOLOCAUSTO non è da meno, quasi 3 minuti di cattiveria un vero e proprio “olocausto” sonoro. Siamo quasi alla fine ma i BRAIN DAMEGED non hanno assolutamente intenzione di rallentare. Ed infatti parte REO 666 brano che ai più nostalgici potrebbe ricordare i Kreator dei primi anni ed a pensarci bene CESAR (che non si risparmia mai) con la sua voce graffiante ricorda molto il buon Mille Petrozza dei tempi d’oro. VIENTOS DE GUERRA (penultima traccia) non tradisce le aspettative, partenza “melodica” per poi tornare alla solita cattiveria a cui i nostri ormai ci hanno abituato dall’inizio di questa registrazione, martellanti e graffianti. Cesar “vomita” le sue liriche con molta più cattiveria rispetto agli altri brani, sembra quasi che questo brano lo coinvolga particolarmente. Il disco si conclude con un vero e proprio inno al thrash DOSIS DE METAL che più che una dose è una vera e propria overdose di metal, costringerà l’ascoltatore ad un headbanging violento ed incondizionato. Questo brano può tranquillamente candidarsi a loro futuro cavallo di battaglia, decisamente una spanna In più rispetto a tutti gli altri (da ascoltare rigorosamente a volume altissimo). Le uniche pecche di questa release, a mio modesto parere, sono la produzione (suona come un demo thrash di fine anni 80) ed il batterista Nicolas, non sempre all’altezza.

I do not know if the band is still around because their facebook page seems shut down and the album was released in 2016, so since that time quite a lot could had happen.
Brain Damaged comes from South America, more precisely from Colombia. The band is a trio and their album represents old school thrash metal with punk and hard core influences. So, the music is quite a crossover of few genres then. The free spirit of their music and nice production of the album are positive elements of the album. Sloppy approach to the construction of songs reveals their lack of experience to create more for quality of music which, on the other hand is significant for bands in Europe. Some fragments in music sound completely naked, like if they just met in the band and start playing whatever came to mind with just little impact in planning anything further for the sake of better music. This aspect is a common approach for many South American bands. Of course, sometimes such spontaneous steps could bring desired effects, sometimes just not. But wait a minute, it`s not that bad with this album. I skip writing about all boring parts and just give you some light on few better tracks that in my opinion heat up some atmosphere around and have a nice South American vibe to it. In case if you wonder, the overall music feeling and sound in this album are just like you would expect it from the band from that region of the world which is like; let`s “all hell breaks loose” some.
The first song I want to point out has number 2 on tracklist. In specific criteria of this album I would say this track is a fine aggressor with fast-slow moments. Pretty good track though, in the vein of Attomica from Brazil.
Song Manipulacion is a furious thrash/hard core track with raging vocals and few heavier guitars. As most of the songs here, this one sounds very old school which reminds me of other Brazilian band Uganga.
Now I mention song with number six only because it has some Slayer`ish vibe to it - even some similar guitar solos from Slayer`s first two albums. The choirs and wrathful vocals they tracked down here spread some terrors off the music.
I mind you that vocals in the album are in Portuguese (except song 4) and singer impose his lyrics on you with much more hard core/punk manner than singers of typical thrash metal bands would do.
It`s good album but without giving me a hurray optimism from what I heard here . I think Nacion Infecta almost always sounds a bit exotic for European people and most of them would even like it. However, I bet that there are a lot of similar bands in South America that sound alike Brain Damaged and they harden to find their own style.
