This is a review of a double 4 way split between Portugal's Hulduefni, U.S.A's i AM esper, Belarus's Paleozoic and Russia's Satanath called "Aliens Vs. Dinosaurs" which was released by Symbol Of Domination Productions and we will start off the review with Hulduefni who plays a mixture of dark ambient, drone, experimental and psychedelia.

His side of the split starts out with ambient sounds and drones along with some distorted parts and melodic guitar leads and clean playing can also be heard at times and after awhile a small amount of black metal screams are added into the music and the guitar riffs also add in melodies to the songs when they are utilized.

Some of the tracks are very long and epic in length and the music also gets very experimental and avant garde at times and some of the tracks are also instrumental and there are also some psychedelic elements being utilized at times and all 4 of his tracks sound very different from each other, the production sounds very dark while the song themes focus on aliens and science fiction.

In my opinion Hulduefni is a very great sounding mixture of dark ambient, drone, experimental and psychedelia and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this solo project. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Alien. the Beginning" and "Grays Walking Through the Hangar".

Next up is i AM esper a solo project that has been featured before in this blog and plays a mixture of drone, dark ambient and experimental.

His side of the split starts out with dark ambient style synths which also give the music an atmospheric feeling and the music also brings in a lot of experimental sounds and the music also brings in post rock style melodies and lo-fi elements along with most of the tracks being very long and epic in length and all of the music is instrumental and all of the songs sound very different from each other with guitars being used briefly and field recordings being added into the last song along with some harsh noises, while the production has a very dark sound to it.

In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from i AM esper and if you are a fan of dark ambient, drone and experimental, you should check out his side of the split. RECOMMENDED TRACK "Cosmic Death II'.

Next up is Paleozoic a solo project that plays a mixture of dark ambient and drone.

His side of the split starts out with atmospheric sounding drones and after awhile the music gets more distorted along with some guitar sounds and most of his songs are very long and epic in length and the music also gets more diverse with each track along with all of the music being mostly instrumental while the last track does bring in a small amount of black metal screams and the production also sounds very dark and heavy.

In my opinion Paleozoic is a very great sounding mixture of dark ambient and drone and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out his side of the split. RECOMMENDED TRACK "Immobility, Indifference and Toughness".

Closing the split is Satanath asolo project that plays dark ambient.

His side of the split starts out with drones and dark ambient sounds along with some field recordings and the music can also get very experimental and avant garde at times bringing in a variety of many different sounds and the music also adds in some loops and power electronics in certain sections of the recording and most of his tracks are very long and epic in length and there is also tribal elements being added into the music briefly while each track also sounds very different from each other and there is also a small use of acoustic guitars for a few seconds while later songs also mix in electronic music and the production has a very dark sound to it.

In my opinion I think t hat Satanath are a very great sounding experimental dark ambient project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out his songs. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Satnogor" and "Sotekius".

In conclusion I feel this is a very great sounding split and I would recommend it to all fans of dark ambient and drone.

We return to the format of a CD, a double one at that, with four dark ambient projects

from four different countries, and all of which are unknown to me. First there is from

Portugal one Hulduefni, who has four pieces in which the guitar plays an all important

role, howling about in a true metal fashion, but shrill, with lots of feedback, except

perhaps in 'Intergalactic Space', which I immediately thought was his best piece. The

other ones sounded truly old-fashioned, but this piece of mutated guitar sounds was

tranquil and out of the ordinary.

I Am Esper hails from America and in the booklet we see his statement 'animals first,

humanity never' (not that animals will ever care about music, I thought and perhaps

making no music would be of more help to animal life? What do I know?), which might

be all a bit Merzbow inspired? He too might use the guitar but arrives at more interesting

results. It started of with 'Cosmic Dreams', a very mellow piece of drones, which worked

very refined in terms of dark ambient. His 'Cosmic Death I' has a bouncing, looped rhythm

played on the guitar, with some great hissy effects, and slowly cascading away. The

second part of this track is close to twenty-eight minutes and is all about harsh noise

with tons of feedback jumping around like hitting his distortion a lot or not. This I didn't

care about.

The second disc has four pieces by Paleozoic from Belarus, more guitars and more effects,

especially reverb is again a hot item here. But his four pieces, unformed as they seemed,

were not bad. Chilling, cold, loud at times, but apart from the old-fashioned 'Immobility.

Indifference And Toughness', the other three worked pretty well. Dark and atmospheric;

as promised on the box.

And finally, from Russia, Satanath, who says 'save the planet, destroy all of humanity'

(these are not really people who want to sell a disc or two, it seems; who do they consider

their fans to be?). He has the most tracks, which are also the shortest. He's also the one

that has the most variety when it comes to using sounds, instruments and techniques.

Rhythm plays some role when hitting the guitar, although it sometimes slips away into

a morass of sound effects, such as in 'Satnagor'. In 'Um Moktud' there are various keyboards

in play and in 'Daralao' even a drum machine hammering away to end with drum & bass in

'Sotekius'; while some of this wasn't bad, it seemed to me as if Satanath hasn't made up

his mind yet what he wanted with his music. Maybe, with the wish of humanity disappearing

it doesn't matter? (FdW)

“Never Stop The Aliensaur” – провозглашает надпись в буклете.

Here's another scene that seems to follow me more than vice versa. Over the past few years I've been roaming in and out of the dark ambient and noise scene. I shared spots on compilations and splits with some of these artists, more than I can remember I guess. I like this scene, it never seems to be out of ideas, or 'rituals' as some artists call their performances. Now, Symbol Of Domination comes up with a massive split-double album, including four prominent acts.

We kick off with Hulduefni, guitar drone and ambient act from Lisbon, Portugal. This act could be seen as a harsh, almost blackened, free-floating version of some of the drone-acts we know today, like a sharp and edgy Aidan Baker or a harsh and rough Dirk Serries' Microphonics. Layers of drones and eerie guitar shrieks make up most of Hulduefni's four tracks here. Somehow, the tracks sound primitive, but still quite immersive and even a bit ritualistic.

I Am Esper (USA) has been evolving a lot over the years. His sound is basically quite similar to what his predecessor brings but without the rough, sharp edges. I see I Am Esper as one of the most interesting acts in the drone-underworld today and as far as I'm concerned, he can compete with some of the bigger names, including Thisquietarmy and Noveller. In fact, his 'Cosmic Death I' is a brilliant piece of dark drone music while Part II is bitter, intense and noisy. Love it.

Paleozoic, from Belarus, continues on the thin line between atmospheric ambient and noise. Here we get cold drones, eerie soundscapes and an overall mystical aura. His contribution on this split might be the most fearsome and imminent, as if something is lurking from behind you, ready to strike but feeding on your fear and desolation instead. 'More Plowed Fields' is my favorite track from this project.

We close this split with Russian act Satanath, who seems to bring in a bit of rhythm on this album. His experimental and electronic approach is very interesting, grabbing the listener's attention almost immediately. I really dig the 'Kolaptos' track but I'm also quite in awe about the strangeness of the other tracks. Satanath certainly delivered the most varied set of tracks on this album, that's for sure.

In all, this split album is an interesting testament for the current dark ambient underground. Four quite different artist who take their art seriously and perform deeply personal music. I can only applaud that, so it shouldn't be a surprise if I recommend this album to every fan of avant-garde, ritual and atmospheric stuff. So check it out, and allow yourself to dwell in these mysterious soundscapes. You won't regret it…

Well, misanthropy and sarcasm often go hand in hand. I think that’s a good thing, because the extinction of humanity can be humorous, is it not?! This given can also be translated in a sonic concept, and that’s where Aliens vs Dinosaurs enters the conversation. What if an aliensaur would invade our world in order to end (human) life? Wouldn’t that be a fantastic nightmare with a bloody yet cool result, for Mater Terra would be saved from the sickness called ‘humanity’, and nature might reconquer its righteous throne? I’m in for some philosophical reflection…

[it’s also the name (*) of some comic written by Grant Morrison and directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, who’s known from the Men In Black motion pictures, but my introduction seemed cooler to me, is it not?! – (*): actually it’s Dinosaurs Vs. Aliens, but the cruel reality remains the same]

But it’s not time (yet) for human annihilation, so before our planet will be changed dramatically, we, the ignorant primates called ‘men’, might be able to enjoy a prophetic soundtrack for that end to come. It’s a four-way split that lasts for almost 160 (!) minutes – indeed, more than two and a half hours of Noise / Drone / Ambient / Electronics is what you’ll get – and there were 500 copies pressed in order to present the world this weird international co-operation.

The first CD is the ‘Aliens’ part, created by Hulduefni at first, anterior to I AM esper. Hulduefni (if I’m not mistaken, it means something like ‘black matter’ in Icelandic) is an outfit by Portuguese musician and producer João Nuno Simões, who also acts under the Lostsol banner. In quite a short period, this guy recorded several hands full of material, and quite a lot of it had been released on split collaborations, just like this one. This is the first release via Symbol Of Domination Productions (note: there was a compilation on parent label Satanath Records in 2013).

What Hulduefni bring is quite disturbing, probably the most confusing material on this split. The first track, Alien: The Beginning, initially combines quite doomy synth lines, weird layers of keyboard madness and shrieking guitar pingles. Quite soon a specific ‘cosmic’ aspect takes over the main spheres, but the frenzy identity comes to its peak as soon as those bleak, wretched growls penetrate the mixture of experimental noises and ambient soundwaves. This Post-Drone experiment might seem quite incoherent, but I feel that there’s a meaning behind that desultory concept. Much more of the inherent sonic-mental escapism comes with shorter tracks like the mammoth’ian Greys Walking Through The Hangar and Parallel Dimensions, for the balance of droning guitar riffs at the background and these sharp-edged leads are more pronounced in tracks like these ones. Quite fine is the fact that, despite a total lack of structural basement (at first sight), there is a clear vision of where to go, and what to reach out for, with this ‘music’. The fourth and last track, then again, called Intergalactic Space, surely is a spacy piece of aural psychotropy, totally lacking of voices and guitars – just bizarre, mentally ill synth-experiment.

Next up on the first disc are three lengthy compositions (the longest one clocking nearly half an hour) from i AM esper, a project of American musician Justin Palmieri, who started this outfit at the end of last decade. He too has been quite busy with this sonic outlet, with tens of releases on major and lesser known labels, and he did join forces with Symbol Of Domination Productions / Satanath Records before.

Anyway, this solo-project brings a symbiosis of quite tranquil and woolly dronescapes, mainly based on floating guitar waves and mesmerizing atmospheres, and asphyxiating noises and experiments. In its most virginal form, a track like Cosmic Dreams sounds dreamlike, but once you get through the different (hidden) layers, those dreams seem to be an expression of nightmare-like oppression. There’s a specific repetitive background, but here too, once those layers have been dissected with precision, you might meet with a multi-facetted richness. This certainly goes for Cosmic Death I, which offers aural dimensions from different angles. Remarkable is the distinction in between the three compositions provided on Aliens vs Dinosaurs, with the extremely lengthy piece Cosmic Death II taking the lead. The droning Noise permanently evolves, going through strange passages of experiment, yet maintaining that characteristic attraction. For sure i AM esper convince, once again, with their own-faced Noise / Ambient / Drone stuff.

The second disc covers the ‘Dinosaurs’ part of the (hi)story, starting with four quite long (in between eight and eleven minutes) lullabies by Belarussian act Paleozoic. This solo-outfit was created by Alexander Kubishkin, whom I had not heard of before. I think it might the first official stuff released under the Paleozoic moniker.

The reverbed Ambient Drone from Paleozoic is quite haunting and oppressive, notwithstanding the somewhat minimal execution of synths and guitars. I truly adore that creepy, horrific atmosphere, for it accompanies your consciousness towards scarifying yet quite beautiful dimensions of the mind; spiritual dimensions you have not visited yet. The obscurity is of a mostly abyssal kind, but then again it lacks of malignancy – rather it is introspective, constructing an immense vastness, an elaborate field of nothingness defined by little monotone grievous sounds. Monotone, dear reader, has nothing to do with dullness or boredom in this case – let’s be sure about that. I refer to ‘monotone’ to define the ease of creating one-directional noises with one result: grandiose and monolithic majesty with a hypnotic result. Seriously, I hope this project will come up with more material soon; this cannot be, this might not be, an occasional project.

The double-album ends with seven pieces written and performed by some guy known as Aleksey Korolyov. Did you ever hear of this guy – neither did I… (figurative smiley added…). No, seriously, Aleksey is the one who runs Satanath Records and Symbol Of Domination Productions, and the same guy who’s involved with Abigorum too (note: on January 26th 2017 I did publish a review for the split with Cryostasium, in case you’re interested), and under the Satanath moniker he released some excellent material before on his own labels.

Satanath’s creations go on in the vein of the last recording, being a mixture of Dark Ambient and Ritual Drone, performed with a huge dose of horrific grimness and quite some electronic experimentation. There is quite a lot to undergo, with every track penetrated by diverse layers, multiple changes in structures, and lots of additional injections whatsoever. The main difference with older stuff is probably the fewer ‘spacelike’ adventures, for the electronic-cosmic aspects made room for more depth, darkness and psychic asphyxiation. But it’s not completely gone – listen for example to pieces like mysterious Um Moktud, which even covers fragments of IDM, or Darrlao, with its psychedelic approach. Satanath focus on deeper aspects of the mind, the will, the realisation of ‘we’ being part of the ‘all’ (if you don’t believe me, I will repeat it over and over again), and that is sort of confusing. But in its final execution, it sounds so breath-taking, partly because of the lack of industrialised elements (the most remarkable difference with any former material, I guess).

The four solo-projects involved on this split are quite differing from each other, so there will certainly be at least one of them that you might appreciate. But I am pretty sure that every soul whose eardrums can be satisfied by Space Ambient / Minimal / Post Drone / Experimental / Ritual Noise / Dark Ambient / Electronic Music will adore this conceptual long player.

А это - Hulduefni - Португалия, I Am Esper – Винланд, Paleozoic – Белоруссия и Satanath – Россия.

Hulduefni. Прессуха декларирует, что это о «dark ambient, drone and experimental".

I Am Esper - drone/dark ambient/noise с элементами post-rock.
