Ah, black gold, and I presume we're talking about oil. The cover shows a man in very bad health condition eating oil. In the background we see the dark skies over the oil fields. It's an apocalyptic vision but somehow it's very realistic image about greed. The band logo tells us we're dealing with a death metal album and the song durations even takes that a bit furthur towards grindcore.

Don't you just love it when everything is right? Yes, this is a death metal album, often nudging towards grindcore and loaded with hardcore punk influences. Brutal guttural vocals, blasting drums and fierce riffs turn the whole into thirteen heart attack causing musical obliterations. I can see the moshpits forming, I can see the crowdsurfers climbing on stage.

Monastery Dead hail from Russia and have been around since 2004. Several line-up changes and three albums later later the band has great plans for the future. I certainly hope they can make those plans come trough because this is a damn crushing piece of work. Fans of bands like Napalm Death, Dying Fetus or Debauchery will undoubtedly appreciate the sheer speed and aggression that these Russians disgorge.

Highlights are the highly chaotic but massive 'Sublimation', 'Voracity of Madness', 'Lie' and (for me personally) the strangely atmospheric 'Generation:Rats', even including some minimal keyboards and post-metal influences. That versatility is what makes this album so interesting. Most of the times the band throws some sickening slaps of brutal grind in your face and on other occasions they prove to be technical experts, capable of performing any extreme genre.

So yes, this is a well-taken care of piece of extreme metal that very few headbangers could resist. Plenty of variation, plenty of intense musical ass kicking, what else could a death metal freak possibly want? So check this out, you won't be disappointed.

Russian extreme band Monastery Dead play ultra brutal skull crushing death metal that’s sure to fucking kick your head in and then leave you dying for the vultures circling above.

This lethal monster is one of the heaviest death metal releases to ever come from the former Soviet era country. “Black Gold Appetite” is the album’s title, and definitely got me thinking as to what they meant by it. By looking at the album’s artwork of a half dead human eating up black gold, as if they’re greedy for its monetary value. Subjects of religious persecution, political upheaval, societal ills, and humanity’s greed for global domination is one of the many underlying themes talked about here.

When you have sensitive subjects as mentioned above tied in with such pounding and mind obliterating rhythms and vocals, you know your end is not too distant from certain reality. Monastery Dead’s downtuned guitar rhythms have this monstrous, wall of sound to them, which creates a feeling of total destruction and despair. The speed at which they play really makes all the difference in the world with their songs destroying everything in their path.

This quartet’s style of writing and playing a bestial, bludgeoning style of auditory cruelty makes for an interesting listening experience, this is if you love being tortured, of course. I’ve always been a huge fan of this style of brutal death metal, and Monastery Dead shows just how well they can compete with some of the more established death metal bands from around the world.

One listen to Monastery Dead and you will feel and see your world burn to total ashes, as it does not get any insane than “Black Gold Appetite”.

“Thurst Of Power Kills People
Human Is Ruthless
Destroys everybody who stand on its way
And Makes The New World On The Bones Of Its Foes”
(c) More Power

The album art work pretty much sets the tone for this album. With a gory cover this can only be a death metal album. And that it is. This is death metal in the Cannibal Corpse school of doing things. Throw in some really moshing parts and you got an album that really grinds with the best. With the risk of repeating myself I have to say that I like this kind of death metal when it is played the way MONESTARY DEAD play it. They mix the brutal with the technical making the best of two worlds.

Monastery Dead are a Saint-Petersburg-based combo, formed a decade ago. After a first demo, the band recorded the album Victims Of Senseless Massacre (Musica Production), followed in 2012 by Cold And Gloom (Wings Of Destruction). Now the band returns, once again subdue to some line-up changes, with their third full length studio album, Black Gold Appetite, which lasts for thirty five minutes.

Seen the ‘average’ artwork, the uninspired title and the plain band’s moniker, I was afraid, prepared to experience the lowest form of would-be Metal. But damn, like I was wrong… Seriously, this quintet (at least they were a four-piece at the moment of these recordings) do not bring something renewing at all, but the quality they stand for is truly beyond expectations. This stuff has something alike to, for example, Abscess / Autopsy, Immolation, God Enthroned, Bolt Thrower, Necrophagia, Incantation, Asphyx and Unleashed / Grave / Dismember, yet with quite some self-identifying elements. That’s a good thing, showing an own face, but one needs to consider the sad, disappointing lack of variation as well. With exception of a couple of compositions, the most is like repeatedly the same, over and over again, with a comparable structure (no matter the technical execution of it), an identic tempo (including the very same changes in structure and speed), and so on.

Once in a while – and believe me if I say that I am not that ‘anti’ at all, despite the lack of glory – there’s one or another excerpt that is slightly better than the ‘average’ (Generation: Rats, for example, is such a piece), but in general I think Black Gold Appetite isn’t but a cool effort that lacks of most grandiose elements that characterise the bands I mentioned in the former paragraph. …or better: those elements might be there (and not necessarily in a worse condition), but since lacking inspiration and invention…

Monastery Dead is a band from the former Soviet Republic who recently completed a nice chunk of energetic, steaming death metal. Their album 'Appetite Black Gold' is full of short, pounding songs that have a great groove. The songs do not surpass the three minutes, and also quickly get to the heart of the matter. It often refers to the metal of a band like Master, really old school with the same low rumbling bass. It is not a new impetus for the death metal, but a good quality album which can definitely compete with the genre contemporaries. Topics such as social inequality, religious oppression and abuse of power are of course an ideal base for a good death metal song and the band is symbolically ramming all obstacles out of the way. A country like Russia will surely have the wrongs and this band is using everything to create a devastating piece of metal for you to let of some steam. Nice to listen to but nothing new under the sun, unfortunately, so go have a listen before buying.

Monastery  Dead  are  a  band  from  Russia  that  plays  a  very  old  school  form  of  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of t heir  2015  album  "Black Gold Appetite"  which  was  released  as  a  joint  effort  between  Symbol  of  Domination  Productions,  Wings  Of  Destruction,  Narcoleptica Productions,  and Grotesque  Sounds  Productions.

A  very  hard  and  melodic  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  solos  and  leads  being  added  onto  the  recording  a  few  seconds  later  and on  the  second  track  the  music  starts  to  speed  up  along  with  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  death  metal  growls  and  the  songs  also  bring in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

Most  of  the  tracks  are  very  short  in  length  with  the  longest  one  only  being  a  little  bit  over  3  minutes  and  the  music  is  very  heavily  rooted  in the  90's  and  as  the  album  progresses  high  pitched  screams  can  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  album  and one  song  also  brings  in  a  small  amount  of   porno  samples  and  some  songs  also  bring in a  brief  use  of  clean  playing  along  with  one  of  the  tracks  being instrumental  before  returning  back  to  songs  with  vocals  and  the  last  track  also brings  in  war  samples.

Monastery  Dead  plays  a  style  of  death  metal  that  is  very  heavy  and  old  school  in  the  90's  tradition  while  also  having  more  of  a  modern  take on  the  genre,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  death,  anti  religion,  war  and  depression  themes.

In  my  opinion  Monastery  Dead  are  a  very  great  sounding  old  school  death  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "More  Power"  "Sublimation"  "Black  Gold  Appetite"  and  "Lie".

Russian death metal realised the album. That is a death metal apocalypse of truth, awesome death metal album.

On this album it can be heard a influence of melodic music, also very interesting they put the sounds of rebellion and war in one of the songs, which made the song more interesting for listening because of the massage of the song, and its inegrated phenomanally with the whole album, of course the influence of melodic music too.

This album will face you with painful reality, death, apocalypse, irony, rebellion, war, brutallity.

Monastery Dead is anonomys band that desirves a lot of attention of the public and listeners. This band is a high guality and powerful death metal band, with intense and the most brutal metal music in death metal genre.

This is a very interesting album of melodic death metal forged with distinctive of progressive, thrash metal and grind core.

Coming from Saint Petersburg, Russia, these guys have two full length albums on their back, and here is the last one released in 2015. Everything is aggressive, melodic and very well tied with solid guitar riffs and destructive drums. Also, I have to say that this band has added all the time high doses of brutality and vocalist Anton Malov made a really good work, delivering holocaustic gutturals. All tracks are complex and fast, and have roots in old school American death metal, but seem like these guys know where they are standing up, and they are trying to find a unique sound. If you are purist in grindcore music or death metal, maybe this one will not catch your attention, but I admit that I find attractive this hybrid, as the band has thick roots in putrefactive music and solid guitar riffs. This is a very well tied band delivering high quality extreme metal music, and you should support underground music. Time shall tell.

Russian Death Metal, it is that time of night! MONASTERY DEAD hails from Russia, and this is their third full length album, and the first time I stumble over the band. As you might have read out of the title, if not the cover artwork gave it away, the lyrical work on this release, is most of the way, politically and society releated. Actually a quite cool deal if you ask me, even though some might wanna say that Death Metal should be about death. The band is delivering a groovy take on technical Death Metal where SUFFOCATION and MISERY INDEX seems to be the big inspirations. They are delivering some good smashing Death Metal, with a good flow, some nice riffing and grooving and clever breaks. I'm not the biggest fan of the vocal delivery, though that's a matter of taste, it as such fits the music well enough. Though I'm missing a tad, some more energy and intensity, a more hardhitting production, as it is a little tame and sterile, and that cuts off the energy I guess. MONASTERY DEAD is doing well, as a run of the mill band in this subgenre of Death Metal, I just miss some more aggression and a little kick in the head, once in a while, it becomes too bland, and after half of the album it all blends together, more or less. There are some good elements and things to develop further into some really hardhitters, though we're just not all there yet.

http://www.voicesfromthedarkside.de/Albums-EPs-Demos/M/MONASTERY-DEAD--10412.html

Monastery Dead - Black Gold Appetite (2015) | Russia | Death Metal | SODP031

After having discovered Dig Me No Grave and Bestial Deform I went out and searched for more Russian Death Metal. This brought me to Monastery Dead, another hidden gem of the Russian underground. Hailing from Saint Petersburg they are active since 2004 and with “Black Gold Appetite” they have already released their third full length album.

Like a lot of newer Death Metal bands they take inspirations from the big names all across the globe. The core sound is pretty much Old School DM but Monastery Dead ramp up the technical complexity in places so that their tracks do not sound overly simplistic. The combination of the primitive rhythms and the furious instrumental work is presented in a way that one does not stand in the way of the other.

Drummer Kirill Zharikov is doing a fine job keeping a steady rhythm with a few outbreaks of technical prowess when the song asks for it. Kirill Tatrinov is the star of the show here with his spectacular guitar work. While a lot of the riffs are pretty much the same as 95 % presented by other DM bands he has added some variations that lead to fantastic momentum in several spots. The lead work is great as well combining longer full blown solos and some short eruptions placed all over the tracks. The songwriting is consistent giving the whole album a nice and natural flow.

The vocals are deep and growly and while there are other DM singers that articulate the lyrics in a better understandable way they are completely serviceable and perfectly fit to the music. For a DM band the lyrics are surprisingly well thought out covering themes like global industries or digital revolutions – of course in a pretty rotten way.

The production could have done with just a bit of extra punch but overall the sound has enough grit and filth to satisfy most DM fans. Over my headphones I have been able to capture all details which would have been a shame if buried in the mix. The bass has been mixed a bit into the forefront which is another nice aspect.

Just to be clear: “Black Gold Appetite” is not a Technical DM album. First and foremost this is an album for fans looking for another traditional DM album but with a bit of a twist.
