Ethir Anduin (named after the delta of the Anduin-river in the Belfalas Bay; cf. Tolkien…) were formed in 2006, and the earliest years were characterised by a relative silence, at least when it comes to official releases. Sole member Alexei Veselov wrote several tracks, but none were released. As from 2010 however, Ethir Anduin did bring out lots of things, including several mini and full length albums. And now this project returns with the fifth album, I Magen Av Svart Kaos, which has a total running time of forty two minutes.
I Magen Av Svart Kaos is totally instrumental, and some might be disappointed by that. Lyrics, at the one hand, are able to create a specific atmosphere, of course, and at the other hand, vocals, if used correctly, might add an aural surplus to the instrumentation. But here we have to do without, whether you like it or not.
But don’t worry, because the instrumental compositions on I Magen Av Svart Kaos are all right. Ethir Anduin bring some sort of atmospheric, highly melodic and epic (Black) Metal with quite some elements from (Funeral / Melancholic / Atmospheric) Doom and (rhythmic / melodic) Post-Metal (not of the experimental progressive or exaggerated avant-garde or alternative kind, luckily). Of quite importance is the more-than-acceptable sound quality, lacking of primitivism, but surely avoiding to fall into modernized fakeness. That’s needed, I think, because instrumental pieces of average-lengthy duration do need something that keeps the listener attentive. And since this kind of material might cause disinterest or boredom, if not performed correctly, the sound might be part of the strength, of the attraction.
But I have to say: I do miss something. It might be personal, but I have the impression that this album lacks of balls. …and no, not because of not having vocals. The play itself is somewhat too artificial and clinical, maybe even too goody-goody. I miss the spontaneous pleasure of play, as if everything was re-polished with surgical precision in order to wash away any possible incoherence or failure. And it is not forbidden to draw outside the lines from time to time. Therefor I am not truly pleased with this piece. The intention is all right (read: the structural ideas are cool), but the lack of invention and bravery is a sad thing to experience.
Aus der Gegend nahe der finnischen Grenze kommen Ethir Anduin. Die Russen spielen einen eigenwilligen Stil, ganz ohne Vocals. Eine hallig tiefe Akustikgitarre beginnt den Zyklus von acht Tracks, nur mit verschiedenen Rhythmen, ohne Soli oder einem anderen führenden Instrument. Bloß ab und an gibt es Leads, und wenn die auftauchen, dann klammern sich die Ohren sofort daran, wie in "Boning Sorg". Episch anmutende, getragene Soundmonumente gehen großzügig mit majestätischen Riffsalven um. Dementsprechend viele Wiederholungen kommen vor, in denen kleine Nuancen die Sache ausmachen. Und trotzdem kann man die Songs auseinanderhalten und wiedererkennen, ja sie sind sogar bebangbar. Ganz schön Detailverliebt die ganze Angelegenheit, wenn man mal genauer zuhört. Ähnlich wie das Cover, das ebenso erst Details freigibt, schaut man genauer hin. Starke Sache, zum öfteren Hören sehr geeignet!
Проект произведен в кооперации с Dark East Productions (Rus), Wolfshade Records (Ukr). Это, как говорится, бэнд из одного человека родом из города Тихвина, что в Петроградской губернии. Алексей давно уже строгает металлическую музыку. Можно сказать с ноль 6-го года. А можно сказать с 10-го года, ибо тогда вышла первая демка, потом были эпишки, синглы и сплиты, в разные года с разными перерывами. Полноформаты тоже были, да при том пять штук.
Надо отметить, что автор - Алекс иногда записывал свою музыку с приглашенными музыкантами, как это было на эпишке ETHIR ANDUIN - В глубинах болота (2012), где вокальные партии для проекта исполняли Алексей Миронов (ПУТЬ СОЛНЦА, ex-BUTTERFLY TEMPLE) и Дима Бельф (НЕВИДЬ, ASHEN LIGHT, ИЗМОРОЗЬ). Я на эту работу писал мини-отклик, где подметил, что “на ощупь - музыкальная шершавая поверхность, эмоционально окрашенная в темнейшие оттенки серого, простроченная вдоль и поперек колючей проволокой типа "гюрза"”.
Но это было тогда, тогда еще музыку отмечали тэгами блак-дум, а сейчас сабжевый альбом — инструментальный, стилистически завязан на гитарный экстрим металл. 42 минуты инфернального струнного звука в подарок фэнам профильного направления.
Жалко, конечно, что здесь нет вокала, - он здесь прямо таки напрашивается, кажется, что вот сейчас из-за угла покажется злой и страшный бармал... вокалист, который укажет всем свои места, где кто должен спрятаться, а и паче - куда бежать. НО. Автор сегодня (в 2014 году, а может и ранее) решил ТАК бросать гитарные сети, тягать улов, смотреть по результатам, а там уж делать выводы.
Мы же сейчас сделаем свои выводы, и кто там не спрятался, я не виноват. Насчет вокала уже сказано. Композер терроризирует слушателя гитарной атакой, запилом и выносом мозга. Риффаж торжественно настроен и эмоции композера формировались во время написания этого произведения в «позитивном» ключе. Кавычки обозначают твердость мышления, жесткую целеустремленность и многое в таком же духе. Люди привычные к думовым экстрадициям, фюнеральному грейвдиггерингу, и музыке соответствующего настроения найдут, конечно, где-то свои профильные фишки, но надо сказать, что они не доминируют. Инструментальный металл, вам сказано.
Да, здесь иногда из почвы высовывается элегическая костлявая рука и торжествующе машет, пока не рассыпется в прах. Есть такое. Но тут же грядет движение интенсивного ритм-секционного бульдозера, который, не торопясь проедется по означенному месту да еще развернется гусеницами по оному. Иногда гитара по первоначалу блаково так завизжит, заскворчит стремительно, знаменуя темные страницы адовой библиотеки, а потом в ту же скрежещую пропасть присоединяются другие партии, которые самодовольно крушат любой из названных стилистических идеалов.
Гитара здесь запугивает, сторожит за всеми углами, забегает вперед и встречает в упор любого путника, заблудившегося в трех соснах. Иногда здесь наворачиваются структуры, явно предназначенный отвлечь слушателя в нужный момент, а потом выкинуть неожиданный фортель. Эмоционально это строго уверенное в себе муЗЛО, которое пытается доминировать и навязывать свою очку зрения, как впрочем, любое с акцентированной ритм секцией.
В траке 6 посредине заметна небольшая космическая дыра, в которой затопили ряд толковых идей, в самом хорошем смысле затопили, чтобы они там жили своей потаенной жизнью утопленников, туда же устремился гитарный ускоренный пассаж, то ли для общего оживления этого аквариума, то ли наскоро перекусить. Там в том омуте, кажется, лежит одно из направлений работы Ethir Anduin, только надо работать с атмосферностью, изучать, как ее применять и пр.
Трак 7 с начала замедлился вроде так, что его можно отнести к мидтемпо и помедленнее, там же гитара вскрылась и показала свою чешуйчатую, шершавую сторону, как кажется для того, чтобы на прощание оставить подозрительный след в плей-листах слушателей, там же замедлилась думово и нарисовала пару медленных и печальных формул, которых мы отчего-то ждали с самого начала. Трак 8 еще более прокачан по низам (не кажется же мне), пышет сабвуферами и толкает мягкой ладонью в сторону пропасти. Да, тут низа прорисованы шикарно, чем и вызывают доверие меломана.

Although we're still fascinated with extreme guitar music, we're not ready to face furious blast-beats yet. After all, it's still quite early here and I didn't get much sleep last night. However, I'm sure that Ethir Anduin will wake me up just the way I want to: with some awesome atmospheric and blackened doom metal. Once again I'm being pleasantly surprised by a Russian one-man project. It's his fifth album since the project's inception in 2006.
What Ethir Anduin does is quite impressive, blending doom metal and post-rock/metal with an eerie, blackened atmosphere. Besides, he does it without vocals, which makes me even more fond of the whole. It's not that I dislike vocals but instrumental music is almost always better, in my humble opinion. It also gives the whole a less obtrusive feel, making it perfect music for everyday activities. After all, that's where you get to hear this music, I don't think this is a live act.
On the other hand, songs like 'Och Ljuset Och Mörkret' and 'Längst Ner I Träsken Av Tartar' would work well on stage, hypnotizing the audience with highly immersive music. So maybe Alexey Veselov, the musician behind this project, should find some band members and get this on the road. But, I know, that's easier said than done, unfortunately. Besides, judging from the music, Alexey is a bit of a perfectionist who will not tolerate mistakes.
The music on 'I Magen Av Svart Kaos' is indeed quite meticulously written and recorded, something that seems a bit odd in the black metal genre but gives the post-rock/metal world something extra. Therefore, I would rather categorize this in that post-scene. 'Katt Vinter' for example, is a stunning track, heavy, atmospheric and precise, most of the tracks are. So I do recommend this album, but possibly not to stubborn black metal fans (who need screaming vocals to make it through the day).

Ethir Anduin – one man проект из Тихвина Петроградской области, который исполняет целиком инструментальную музыку в стиле задумчиво-депрессивного блэка смешанного с фьюнерал-думом. Проект стартовал в 2010 году и за прошедшее с того далёкого года время уже успел обнародовать солидную дискографию. Сейчас мы имеем дело с новейшим релизом проекта, датированным 2014 годом.
“I Magen Av Svart Kaos” звучит очень эмоционально и атмосферно, то и дело в сознании всплывают аллюзии к Summoning, что при общей инспированности творчества проекта Толкиеном, из произведений которого и было позаимствовано название, не удивляет.
Бывают такие состояния и такие времена, когда грусть и тоска настолько сжимают грудную клетку, что уже нет сил говорить и самих слов нет. Есть только боль, безмолвие и тишина. “Слова кончились”. И звук. Потому что скорбь тоже имеет звуковой аналог, и может быть выражена так: Ethir Anduin.
“У всего есть своё время и место. Нет ни прошлого, ни будущего. Есть только река смерти, которая несёт души, прогоняя их с берегов жизни. Кого-то раньше, кого-то позже. Чем больше душ, тем шире река. Придёт время, когда она выйдет из своих берегов и поглотит всех и вся. Это будет конец. Здесь только один бог – смерть” – повествует надпись в буклете альбома, однозначно свидетельствуя в пользу того, что мы имеем дело со стоической философией отчаяния и смерти.
Ethir Anduin – музыка тоскующей и уставшей тосковать души, для которой бытие стало как одна сплошная белая пелена смерти, и больше нет ни красок, ни цвета, ни радости. Такая монохромность навсегда меняет все чувства восприятия, и человек смотрит на мир, но видит только лёд, холод и мрак. Как Кай из сказки про Снежную Королеву после того, как в его сердце поселился осколок дьявольского зеркала. О том, каково это отчасти свидетельствуют изображения в буклете.
Музыка Ethir Anduin прекрасна и величественна как бесконечная река забвения, спокойна, атмосферна и холодна как зимний лес, но увидеть все оттенки и блики этой однотонной кромешной скорби сможет только тот, кто уже носит в себе её семена. Величественная Музыка обречённых, безгласная поэзия великой и последней Тишины, где уже не будет ни эха, ни слов, ни снов.

Ethir Anduin are a solo project from Russia that plays an instrumental mixture of black, doom and post metal and this is a review of his 2014 album "I Magen Av Svart Kaos" which was released as a joint effort between Satanath Records, Dark East Productions, and Wolfshade Productions.
Clean playing starts off the album along with some drum beats a few seconds later before going into a heavy and melodic post metal direction and you can also hear elements of black and doom metal in the music and the solos and leads also use a great amount of melody and none of the songs use any vocals or lyrics.
A couple of the tracks are very long and epic in length and the music sticks to either a slow or mid paced musical direction and you can the more atmospheric side of black metal and when the music speeds up a small amount of blast beats can be heard and one of the tracks also brings in a brief use of synths.
Either Anduin plays a musical style that takes a modern post metal sound and mixes it with atmospheric black and doom metal while also avoiding any vocals or lyrics to create a style of his own and the production also sounds very professional.
In my opinion Either Anduin are a very great sounding instrumental mixture of black, doom and post metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this solo project. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Och Ljuseet och Morket" "Kall Vinter" and "Boning Song".

The more one delves deeper into underground metal, especially of the black variety, the more likely it gets to stumble upon one-man bands that enjoy exploring new roads. Among the ones I have had the chance to review, I might name the Canadian project Old Witch with its non-stop mixing of different styles; here we are dealing with a similar seemingly limitless approach by the Russian multi-instrumentalist Alexey Veselov through his creature Ethir Anduin.
The project was named after the mouth of the Anduin river from "The Lord Of The Rings", perhaps highlighting its nature both as a "frontier" and as a flowing water basin where different elements meet and blend with each other. Compared to his previous releases, the main differece in terms of contents is probably the choice of Norwegian language for the song titles (he had used English and Russian in the past), that initially confused me a little before finding out the musician was actually from the Leningrad Oblast.
In "I Magen Av Svart Kaos" we can notice just how much Veselov enjoys instrumental music (no song features any vocals), and mainly treads between black and doom metal territories even in the same track. You can hear some influences by melodic doom metal à la Swallow The Sun or Daylight Dies (which is great if you like that style), although at times the lack of sung parts might render the record a little incomplete.
This is yet another representative of the very lively Russian underground scene, quite clear-minded although open to exploring and contaminations. A good pick by Satanath Records, Dark East Productions, and Wolfshade Records, that succeeded at giving Veselov some well-deserved visibility after years in the independent circuit. We will see what is in store for the future.

Ethir Anduin is another one-man project from Russia, by Alexey Veselov. Having released over five albums and various demos and EPs I am surprised that I have not heard of this band before. The band was named after the Mouth of the Anduin River from "The Lord Of The Rings", atmosphere and watery graves entwine these melodies. All the songs are instrumental, so there are no screaming vocals to soothe your soul. This means all the focus is on the music and it is recorded extremely well. A lot of time and thought has gone into this project and it reflects within each track.
The Satanath Records website offers this description: 'Music of this album is impregnated with despair and internal strife … At the end of the path there is nothing. Only darkness and eternal dank emptiness'.
Nothing could be truer. Elements of Funeral Doom/Black Metal and a lot more lie hidden away within this blackened offering. The music rushes through your mind leaving a cold, damp feeling. It's pretty dark stuff but the melodies are really deep and I love the fact that there are plenty of breaks throughout the music, and the quiet parts are gems.
Beautifully crafted and very mournful, this is definitely an album that will grow on you the more you listen to it. Yes, you have the lead guitars coming through; these are what you would expect, and it's nothing new or fresh, but they complement the songs very well. Most of the songs are short, around four to five minutes but each one is packed with riffs galore. You almost forget it's instrumental, and somewhere along each track you find yourself screaming your own melodies. Maybe it's a clever thing that the songs are short as nothing gets drawn out too long and you can really enjoy the work on display.
The guitars are played to a high and polished standard. He brings in each change or overlapping guitars at the precise moment needed, and also the panning of the instruments are spot on. I often listen to music on headphones to get a real feel for all the elements and little notes that are often missed and the mix does not fail for me. Drums drive each song along at a furious pace. Double bass thunders through the guitars and really adds to the building of structures. Will we ever see vocals on the music? - I, for one, would not care when it's this good. I'm glad I have found this band and have a welcome amount of releases to crawl through. Welcome to the abyss called Ethir Anduin.

Пятый альбом, на тот момент еще one man band (сейчас группа обзавелась ещё и вокалистом, чего кстати очень не хватало на этом альбоме) группы из города Тихвин, Ленинградской области издан сразу тремя лейблами: Satanath Records, Dark East Productions и Wolfshade Records, со стильным, полностью подходящим по настроению альбому, но несколько скромным оформлением. Но в данном случае это совершенно не важно, ведь главное содержание а не обёртка, а оно здесь весьма и весьма годное!+
На протяжении чуть более 40 минут ты полностью погружаешся в пучину печали и отчаяния, насквозь пропитанную гнетущим ужасом и чувством безысходности, которые ощущаются чуть ли не физически.
Все восемь треков ты словно бы бродишь по опустошонному миру, наедине со своей душевной болью, страхами и тоской завладевшими тобой. При этом ты прекрасно осознаешь что тебе никогда не выбраться отсюда обратно... Хотя куда обратно? Да и зачем? Ведь даже там где, вроде бы, людно и кипит жизнь, ты всё равно остаешся в одиночестве и пустоте, в ожидании её Величества Смерти! И это есть твой настоящий мир, твоя реальность - твой мрак... твоя бездна...
Вот такое настроение передаёт данное творение, так филигранно созданное идейным лидером Ethir Anduin, а так же по совместительству автором и исполнителем всего и вся - Алексеем Веселовым (как иронично получается, музыка создаваемая Алексеем является полной противоположностью его фамилии), который к слову сказать, на данный момент является еще и штатным гитареро легендарной Питерской Death Metal команды Bestial Deform.
В музыкальном же плане альбом представляет собой смесь из атмосферного и мелодичного Doom Metal, с уклоном во Funeral, обильно политого чернейшей смолой Black Metal, но это все очень условно дабы сориентировать читателя, звучание же полностью построенно на плотном гитарном саунде при мощной поддержке ритм - секции, и приправленно сверху совсем небольшим количеством клавишных, в общем очень сильная и эмоцианальная работа. Единственное что меня немного огорчило, так это полное отсутствие вокала, здесь он ну прям напрашивается, и пришёлся бы как нельзя кстати, кажется что ну вот, ну вот вот, ну вот сейчас точно, но нет... и гитара дальше продолжает рисовать свои печальные картины в одиночестве.
В итоге мы имеем неплохой альбом, со своей атмосферой грусти и отчаяния, отлично сыгранный профессионалом своего дела; правда вот не обошлось без ложки дёгтя, как по мне, так запись получилась немного глуховата, и плюс к этому отсутствие живых барабанов тоже сказывается на общей картине. Но даже не смотря на это, альбом оставляет вполне себе приятное впечатление.

Год назад я получил коробку с дисками от Satanath Records и к моему стыду начинаю писать о присланной мне музыке только сейчас. Хотелось бы прежде всего выделить достойные внимания релизы и ETHIR ANDUIN I Magen Av Svart Kaos один из них. Информации об этой формации очень мало, но мы знаем что как раз самые темные глубины музыкального андеграунда и рождает монстров. Без шуток - Ethir Anduin уникальная формация и I Magen Av Svart Kaos доказывает это. Крепкий союз холода и темноты рождающий смерть - Doom Metal, Black Metal, DEATH METAL.
Материал однороден по концепции, однако после Förbannelse Av Våra Förfäder неожиданно меняется звучание - у меня такое ощущение как будто лейбл разметил две EP на одном диске. Несмотря на то, что это проект одного человека у меня стойкое ощущение, что композиторов двое - слишком уж неоднозначно раскрываются композиции, учитывая что - Алексей заслуженный ветеран струнных войн в составе Bestial Deform, думаю это сделано осознано, хотя.... Нет. Весь материал этого релиза - это поиск новых материй, новых ощущений в музыке, попытка общения со слушателем - возможно не самая удачная, но отчаянная.
Все восемь треков без вокала, это путешествие по зимнему лесу в надежде найти выход из него и лишь тусклый свет звезд будет вашим помощником.
