We’re about to bring you a new song for your abused ears. It will take you about two seconds to realize that it doesn’t deal with any deep philosophical subjecta. Look at the song title. Look at the band name. Look at that cover art!
For the moment you’ll have to look elsewhere for your philosophizing. Now it’s time to revel in the grand old death metal tradition of horror — of unnatural wolves and disemboweled corpses. And to guide us in our gruesome revels we owe thanks to The Scum, who come our way from the topographically dramatic city of Manizales, a mountainous Colombian cradle of both coffee and extreme metal.
The band’s second album, The Hunger, is set for co-release on April 18th by Satanath Records and the Colombian label Wild Noise Productions. And what is the means by which the monstrous hunger is sated? The song title tells us: “I Drink Your Blood and I Eat Your Skin”.
Lovers of horror should already be interested, even if they haven’t heard this band’s previous releases, but as a further come-on the labels make reference to the likes of Entombed, Benediction, Unleashed, Napalm Death, and Sinister. To further cinch the connection to old school death metal, they also tell us that The Hunger was mixed at Tomas Skogsberg’s Sunlight Studios and mastered by Dan Swanö at Unisound.
But now let’s turn to the gory red meat of the matter — the music itself. What this new song brings us is not mewling comfort but a brazen barrage, a barrage of shrieking strings and mauling riffage coated in corrosive HM-2 distortion, propelled by thundering bass lines, skull-popping snare attacks, and furious fills. If the werewolf on the cover could fashion words, it would sound like the ravenous growls of vocalist José Fernando Ospina.
The attack doesn’t last long, but long enough for deranged, fret-melting solos to spurt forth like gushes from an open vein, and for the band to inflict bursts of jolting spinal trauma. It’s all wild, an adrenaline-fueled romp that feeds the hunger for crushing and crazed death metal executed with authentic sound and spirit. See for yourselves!
The Hunger was recorded and mixed at Bad Home Studio Manizales (Colombia), and all guitar solos were recorded by Julian Gil Monroy. The album’s ghastly cover art is the work of Yan Sek. Layout, and the booklet was created by Ana Caballero.
“The Hunger” el nuevo álbum de los colombianos The Scum, se convierte en la nueva apuesta del sello Satanath Records y el sello Wild Noise Productions. 10 cortes extremos, retratan, horror, brutalidad, combinado con el rigor del Death Metal vieja escuela.
Death Metal sin agravios y directo, la etiqueta que The Scum ha manejado desde sus inicios en el año 2015. Su propuesta siempre ha sido la pureza del género representada a través del horror, el slash y los sonidos profanos que se crearon en las cavernas de ensayo de bandas de culto como Entombed, Grave, Benediction.
Sin lugar a dudas The Scum ha sido una de las bandas revelaciones del Death Metal colombiano, no solo por su intachable trayectoria en los sonidos extremos, sino también por sus lanzamientos “Self Destructive Race (2015), Ashen (2018) y su último Ep titulado “Dead Eyes” mezclado por Thomas Skogsberg (Dismember, Carnage, Entombed, Grave), masterizado por Andy Classen (Holy Moses, Belphegor, Krisiun), donde nos presentaros el video homónimo de este trabajo dirigido por Juan Diego Escobar Alzate, uno de los directores de cine de terror y de género más respetados en Sur América, logrando destacarse como uno de los videoclips más importantes de la música colombiana, según la revista Rolling Stones Colombia y varios portales especializados de Europa y América, además de lograr la estatuilla al mejor video de Metal colombiano por el reconocido festival de Cine y Metal FICIME.
“The Hunger”, la nueva placa de The Scum:
Ahora la agrupación nos adelanta algo de lo que será su próximo trabajo de estudio “The Hunger”, los dos primeros singles de su tercer álbum de estudio, a través del mítico sello Georgiano Satanath Records y del sello colombiano Wild Noise Productions. Esta placa fue grabada y mezclada en Bad Home Manizales (Colombia) y masterizada por el legendario músico y productor sueco Dan Swanö.
Para este trabajo, la banda continuó por la línea que caracteriza su estilo, guturales poderosos extraídos de los baúles del inframundo. La fórmula clásica del Death Metal con baterías rápidas, distorsiones que remembran el sonido del Boss HM-2, el directo implicado del sonido extremo de Estocolmo en el principio de los 90´s. El bajo machacante impregnando de oscuridad y terror, acompañado las líricas sangrientas y perversas de antihéroes y psicópatas que bien se encuentran en las películas de horror, serie B y slasher.
El álbum tiene contemplado su lanzamiento para el 18 de abril a nivel mundial, pero para Latinoamérica se adelanta una preventa que tendrá inicio a partir de este 29 de marzo a través de Wild Noise Productions. “The Hunger” y “I Drink Your Blood And I Eat Your Skin” son los primeros singles de esta carnicería, donde se evidencia el resultado de esta obra de horror.

En ocasiones cuando tenemos la oportunidad de reseñar un material latino hay buenas expectativas pero luego al escucharlo te das cuenta que es un sonido americano que se replica y terminan siendo discos que no marcan una relevancia. Scum es una banda de death metal colombiana que nos presenta su segundo material de larga duración titulado “The Hunger''.
“The Hunger” se encuentra disponible por el sello de Satanath Records, este trabajo presenta una duración de 43 minutos aproximadamente los cuales se reparten en 11 piezas, el arte de portada no es de mi agrado pero en fin.
Este álbum de “The Hunger” es un death metal con un sonido clásico de los noventas, el cual tiene algunas canciones cortas pero que son muy explosivas en todo momento, canciones algo extensas pero que tienen una buena idea musical ya que se le inyectan momentos de melodía para que no todo sea riffs asesinos, la gutural hasta cierto punto es muy monótona ya que no proporciona algo distinto cancion tras cancion y esto no es malo, pero tal vez algunos cambios le pudieran dar un toque distinto a las piezas, hay uno que otro ataque salvaje en la batería.
Hay algunas canciones interesantes como “Withered Faith” que incorpora unos acordes acústicos y es una pieza de hecho que no es tan brutal como otras de este material. The Hunger comienza de una manera muy abrupta pero el headbanging será inminente. Forsaken es un poco más oscura con esos riffs lentos y ese tono vocal que es en la única canción que cambia un poco, lo relevante de esta pieza son esos momentos melódicos los cuales muestran la buena técnica que existe en la guitarra. “Rogue” es intensidad pura desde su comienzo.

If ever there was an album one would want to make an impression, it’s the one encapsulated by the feasting wolf image seen here. And I’m happy to report this manages to do just that! Guitars lacerate mercilessly with a buzzsaw tone, the drums leave one bludgeoned and dazed, and the brute vocals execute a wicked finale; the killing blow to the audio beating being delivered. In short, and for those not paying attention, this is most definitely Old School in tone, it obliterates all that one could wish without attempting to change the parameters of an already established genre formula which works so well. Add this to any well worn playlist which likely includes Bloodbath, Dismember, LIK, Entombed, Entrails and the like.

THE SCUM stammen aus Kolumbien und brachten im vergangenen Jahr ihr zweites Studioalbum heraus. Der Name ist immer noch “The Hunger“, Cover technisch erinnert es mich an Filme wie “Der Wolfsmensch“, “Das Tier” oder auch “American Werewolf” und Dan Swanö unterstützte und half beim Mastering aus. Spielerisch gibt man sich dem 90ziger Death-Metal hin und textlich stehen ihre Themen auch dem vorher filmisch erwähnten in nichts nach und im Wege und wenn doch, dann wird eben gemeuchelt, gemetzelt, gefressen und so weiter und sofort, ganz wie ihre Inspiration es zulässt und hergibt.
“Splatter technisch” sägt man sich spielerisch blutrünstig durch die Zeit, der Sound hat die entsprechende Rohheit und selbst der Kürzeste im Bunde namens “I Drink Your Blood and I Eat Your Skin“, entlässt gemischt kreatives, obwohl man vermutet, das es in etwas über zwei Minuten kaum verpackbar ist. “Burial“, den ich unten mit angeheftet habe, ist einer meiner Favoriten. Drückend und energiegeladen stampft er anfangs durch die dunklen Sümpfe, bevor das Tier, der Mensch mit Lykanthropie, der Werwolf kraftvoll und schnell herausbricht und sich beides musikalische folgend abwechselt. “Withered Faith” beginnt seine Reise mit ruhig düsteren Gitarrenklängen und mit leicht sphärischer Note (..sie könnten auch aus einem alten Halloween Film stammen..), um dann kurz vor der Hälfte das Quintett wieder gemeinsam aktiv werden zu lassen, nun die 6-Saiter vierhändig bedient werden und man das alles im “normalen” Tempo ablaufen lässt, während z.B. “The Seal” sich überhaupt nicht an diese “Regel” hält und das Tempolimit teilweise ignoriert.
Fans entsprechender Genregrößen wie z.B. Unleashed, Entombed oder auch weiteren Bands die sich diesem Sound der Zeit verschrieben haben, sollten hier definitiv mal beide Ohren spitzen und in das Zweitwerk reinhören.
Fazit: Es wird gejagt, es wird verfolgt und ordentlich im musikalischen Mantel der Vergangenheit ausgeteilt!

Colombian band The Scum are out with the album "The Hunger", and metal is the style explored on this production. The ori4entation of choice here is extreme metal, with twisted, loudly mixed monumental guitar riffs leading the way through occasional doom-laden territories, thrash metal pace and intensity landscapes and intense and hammering extreme metal runs. Barked growls caters for the vocals, while the drums have a central role as the secondary intensity provider by, for instance, adding pacier hammering drum patterns to slower paced riff cascades. Flowing and melodic guitar solo runs adds an effective contrast to the monumental riff and rhythm cascades, and on spare occasions the band will treat us to some gentler interludes too. By and large this is an album for extreme metal fans that crave their music to be loud and monumental in a dramatic and feral manner, and who thrive on the contrast between cascades of rhythms and riffs on one hand and flowing and often elegant guitar solo runs on the other.
18 апреля 2022 года вышел совместный релиз «Satanath Records» и «Wild Noise Productions» - второй полноформатник «The Hunger» колумбийской дэт-метал группы The Scum.
Банда была создана в 2013 году в Манисалесе, колыбели экстремальной музыки Колумбии. Ребята выступали в разных городах своей страны и Эквадора, а также на некоторых важных фестивалях в своём регионе. Коллектив играл на разогреве у таких известных команд, как Destruction, Tim Ripper Owens, The Haunted, Pungent Stench.
С самого начала своего существования группа The Scum находилась под сильным влиянием жанра ужасов в фильмах и литературе, а также олдскульного дэт-метала. Ее участники описывают свою музыку, как олдскульный дэт-метал, в который они пытаются «привнести элементы как оригинальных европейских сцен, таких как шведская, английская, голландская и т.д., так и американской сцены в классическом звучании Флориды и Нью-Йорка»:
«На нас повлияли многие, но для того звучания, которое мы определили, мы можем упомянуть Entombed, Unleashed, Grave, Dismember, Benediction, Bolt Thrower, Pestilence, Gorefest, Death, Autopsy, Malevolent Creation и многие другие группы, принадлежащие к старой школе дэт-метала».
На «The Hunger» представлен достаточно сырой и грубый дэт с грязноватым и шероховатым саундом и мрачной, зловещей, замогильной атмосферой:
«Запись была начата в нашем городе проживания Манисалес в 2019 году на студии «Bad Home», но из-за пандемии не хватало некоторых деталей, которые мы постепенно доделывали в 2020 и 2021 годах, пока не смогли отправить альбом на мастеринг в «Unisound Studios» в Швеции, где работу выполнил Дан Сванё».
«Мы стараемся строить песни с четко определенными структурами, которые понятны и органично запоминаются слушателю. Чтобы они естественным образом проникали в сознание слушателя и разлагали его ха-ха-ха-ха-ха-ха-ха-ха-ха-ха-ха».
«На «Ashen» мы все еще стремились писать более компактные песни, и я думаю, что в определенной степени это было достигнуто. Но на «The Hunger», как мне кажется, нам удалось написать композиции, в которых больше ритмики и мелодики. А также здесь есть более эмоциональные и эффектные моменты, чем в нашем предыдущем альбоме. Я думаю, что мы начали добиваться этого на нашем сингле «Dead eyes», который вышел в 2020 году».
Заглавный трек повествует о жажде крови оборотнем, который изображен на обложке. Ее автором является индонезийский иллюстратор по имени Ян Сек, который уже давно сотрудничает с группой:
«Идея заключалась в том, чтобы сделать работу, очень близкую к старым постерам фильмов ужасов и классическим обложкам комиксов ужасов, фэнтези и научной фантастики, но с большей степенью жестокости и грубости, чем в этих классических работах. Кроме того, тот факт, что автор - восточный человек, придает определенные стилистические аспекты, которые придают идее большую оригинальность и индивидуальность. Обложка иллюстрирует текст песни «The Hunger», которая является нежной и традиционной историей о ликантропии!»

«Меня вдохновляет классическая литература ужасов и фильмы ужасов, как самые культовые фильмы 60-х, 70-х и 80-х годов 20 века, так и новые, очень интересные предложения в рамках жанра. В мире ужасов все еще есть хорошие предложения и молодые режиссеры, которые добиваются больших успехов. Цель группы - использовать отношения между ужасом и экстремальным металом, чтобы посмотреть, как далеко мы можем зайти. Мы уже снимали видео, устраивали концерты и т.д., но каждый раз нам хочется идти дальше».

After 2 EPs and a debut full-length, Colombian rotting squad The Scum unleashed their second album ‘The Hunger’ in 2022, by several labels.
With an attitude of pure joy and spreading love like on ‘I drink your blood and I eat your skin’, getting Mortician flashbacks as we speak, The Scum embraced the groovy and grinding kind of Old School Death Metal.
The musical escapade The Scum is aiming for, is a heady brew of grooving UK scene, grinding Napalm Death-esque vibes and some of the Swedish scene melodic and groove riffs as well. ‘The Hunger’ got the textbook riffs, groove and approach, which creates a fun listen but doesn’t have the ‘pushing repeat’-factor.
A competent effort which beholds some nice solos, but it needs a spark to ignite wider interest. Maybe they can realise that with their next release, ‘till that time you can give ‘The Hunger’ a spin, maybe it will satisfy your hunger in unknown Old School Death Metal territories.
