This is a review of another recording from Mexico's Dies Irae which shows them continuing their melodic mixture of black, dark, doom and death metal and the album was originally released in 2001 and called "Naive" with this newer version being re-issued in 2019 by Grimm Distribution.
A very fast and melodic sound starts off the album along with a decent amount of blast beats while all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them. Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams along with the music being more Swedish death metal influenced than the previously reviewed album.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are done in a very melodic style along with some clean playing being added into certain sections of the recording as well as some of the tracks being very long and epic in length.
Elements of dark and doom metal can also be heard in the slower sections of the songs as well as some whispered vocals, clean singing and spoken word parts also being added onto some of the later tracks and as the album progresses the music also gets more progressive sounding, a couple of the tracks are also instrumentals. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover death, sadness, darkness and depression themes.
In my opinion this was another great sounding recording from Dies Irae and if you are a fan of melodic black, dark, doom and death metal, you should check out this album.

Это одна из 14 групп с аналогичным названием по всему металлическому миру. Мексиканская. Dies irae (лат. «День гнева»). Вообще-то, это название музыкально-текстового отрывка из католической мессы, который рассказывает о судном дне. Широко использовалась классическим композерами, а так и металлическими музыкантами, подхватившими знамя серьезной музыки из ослабевших рук неоклассиков.
Но вернемся же к нашим мексиканцам.
Melodic Doom/Dark Metal - так описывает музыку ПЕРЕ-издающий лейбл GrimmDistribution. А архивы делают так: - Melodic Gothic/Death Metal. И знаете, все правы.
Мексиканцы изготовили удивительный и красивый металлический сплав стилей, с упором на приятный металлистам мелодизм. Кстати, при делах с 1991 года. Две демки, два сплита и три полноформата - вот вам вся дискография. Потому представляете всю терпкость, крепость и насыщенность этого мексиканского напитка?
Переиздание содержит дополнительный трэк — бонус, живую запись одного из трэков, так что слушателю предлагается оценить реальное мастерство музыкантов. Так и сделаем, но сначала диск 2001 года, выпущенный в свое время Oz Productions.
Он заточен на 63 минуты, и знаете, не кажется затянутым, несмотря на все его пространные гитарно-инструментальные партии. Получайте удовольствие — работа проведена немалая.
Начинает Dies Irae именно что как качественный МДМ - даже перфектный по фразе и ощущению стиля, с жестким режущим харш-вокалом. Не зря один из рецензентов написал: Мексиканский In Flames детектед. Не зря. Первый трэк это в самую точку, в десятку. Вот оно дыхание 90-х!!!
Неторопливо металлюги разворачивают музыкальное полотно в мид-темпо, но очень напряженно, развивают события, четко ставя фразу, запятую и многоточие. Wow, чуть не забыл, а ведь музыканты записывались в Fredmаn studio, что в шведском Готеборге, может это что-то вам говорит ))). Продюсирование и микс - Fredrik Nordstrom. Эти данные в принципе снимают многие вопросы, кстати очень нелишним, я думаю, будет названный бонус )), надеюсь, вы поняли к чему я веду.
Каким бы ни был продюсер, все-таки в металлической музыке очень важно владение инструментом. Особенно, если ваши амбиции предполагают исполнение не просто true хэви металла. А нечто посложнее, поизящнее и более скульптурное. У DIES IRAE — предполагают.
Да и заявки солидные ДАРК металл, МДМ. Так что к гитаристу особые требования. А этому — ноль проблем, - говорит, - сделаем в наилучшем виде. И потому на протяжении всего музыкального времени наслаждайтесь гитарой работой, тем более здесь все четко и внятно слышно. Солирующий струнник - прихотливый человек, который следует за своим настроением и прекрасно облекает эмоцию в сурово-металльный звук. Так и есть. Однако ж фиксирую - здесь на диске есть локации не тяжелого прогрессивного звука, и опять cтрунник в теме, изящно формирует ажур, давит интенсивными лирическими прогонами. Чем больше слушаешь, тем более удивляешься.
Вокалиста здесь два, один - бэк, но основной владеет и харшем, иногда заползающим на гроулинг, и иногда появляется готический, чистый, приличный, так сказать, для посторонней публики. Мое личное мнение после первого прослушивания — вокала нужно было давать более: и жесткого, и чистого, в длинных инструментальных шикарных прострелах это востребовано.
НО! В оправдание группы скажу, что в указанных местах группа переходит практически на техничный музон, прог-металльные темы (чем она предметно стала заниматься, видимо, на третьем альбоме, так как архивы как раз об этом и пишут).
Переиздание этого удивительно многообразного альбома осуществлёно украинским лейблом GrimmDistribution (лейбл-партнер Сатанат Рексордс) совместно с эквадорским Exhumed Records (Ecu).

Что касается следующей работы мексиканских сеньоров, смена курса на ней видна невооружённым глазом. На “Naïve” (2001) Dies Irae заиграли довольно интересный мелодик-дэт с лёгким креном в дарк-метал, без оголтелых сверхскоростных запилов и не лишённый романтического настроения, присущего дебютной работе. Особенно хорошо это чувствуется в мечтательных гитарных соло, да и эпизодические медленные фрагменты говорят о том, что группа достаточно уважительно относится к своему прошлому. Трудно сказать, пошли ли эти изменения на пользу группе… В целом второй лонгплей получился динамичнее, бодрее, злее и ярче – не сказать, что однозначно лучше дебюта, но что профессиональнее и увереннее – факт. На этом альбоме ремастерингом занимался Фредрик Нордстрём (гитара в Dream Evil плюс студийная работа с Arch Enemy, Dark Tranquillity, HammerFall, Dimmu Borgir, In Flames и т. д.) – и результат получился впечатляющим: партии всех инструментов звучат очень чисто и сбалансировано. Наиболее впечатлившие на “Naïve” композиции – плавная, похожая на течение реки “Parallel Universe I”, её вторая инструментальная часть, почему-то не указанный в трек-листе семиминутный инструментал “In Porous Verse” и чисто мелодэтовый “Shades”. Как и “Ethereal”, этот альбом также содержит бонус – концертную версию “Parallel Universe I”, в живом исполнении звучащую ничуть не хуже своего студийного двойника.
Вердикт: вполне достойное переиздание, как по музыкальному содержимому, так и по качеству физического носителя (полноценные буклеты с комментариями музыкантов, оби-стрип и пусть и скромный, но всё-таки пит-арт) – оба диска не будут лишними в фонотеке любого дум-ориентированного меломана.

Naive is another re-release of original 2001 album from iconic Mexican band Dies Irae. It`s surely well deserved reminder from the past about the band and still, this album basically stands out to these days. Album features Gus G. (Firewind, Ozzy Osbourne) and Marios Iliopoulos as the special guests of the album, who both did backing vocals and guitar solos in tracks Ice In Dawn and Blurred.
Dies Irae flew over to Sweden to record this album and I am sure that it has had to be life experience for those guys because album sounds wonderful, mixes and mastering of songs is a masterpiece in engineering and song writing is stunning.
As a fact that album was all done in Sweden, Naive earned its “Swedish haunting” in sound signature but music is also not far away from bands like Dark Tranquillity and At The Gates which, by many people are well known by so called Gothenburg death metal style (in contradiction to death metal sound of bands like Entombed, Dismember etc). Even if Dies Irae is not European band I could not really confuse them with these Swedish bands that much because, despite similar music approach they all have taken for making their own music, Dies Irae do their own thing with Naive songs too. They just made it work for them under the Scandinavian`s morning star sky which you can mainly hear by a specific sound of this album that is rather nothing I heard from Central America.
Screaming vocalist may sounds just like many other melodic death metal singers, for most of time but, in song like Slow Slow the band did some excellent, clean vocals, expressed with emotional depth. This album is characterized by a very good, progressive bass lines, a bit like on Cynic or Obscura albums. That's why melodic death metal performed by Dies Irae sounds much better; song writing is more complex, music horizons reaches beyond typical death metal song writing, while feeling of music hits emotional strings inside you. Melodic guitar work, practically in every song, has sort of melancholy and energy attached to the riffs of the band that make this album shines its glory on listeners.
This entire album is splendid, song and production wise. My interest in the band is growing every minute I hear their songs. They seem to have gained experience while in process of recording this album because track by track all I hear is like a band`s transformation that is getting better than at the beginning of the album.
If you`d call Dies Irae a “Swedish” sounding” metal band, I would not agree more with this opinion. The only difference is that it`s the best band from Mexico I have heard so far.

Thanks to the joint work of GrimmDistribution and Exhumed Records the second full-length album of the Mexican four-piece band known as Dies Irae has been recently re-released as well. "Naive" includes 9 tracks, which dig even deeper into the spheres of the Swedish melodic death metal. Back then the Mexicans were heavily influenced by the early materials of Dark Tranquillity and In Flames. As a fact, "Naive" originally was released in 2001 via Oz Productions. This material is more straightforward and has less experimental solutions than its predecessor. Apropos, it was recorded at Fredman Studio in Gothenburg (Sweden) and was produced/mixed by Fredrik Nordström. The recording line-up was the same as for "Etherial", but me personally, like the songs of "Naive" better. The only thing I still couldn't figure out regarding Dies Irae's music, why the quartet choose to play the Swedish kind of melodic death metal, if it is something the Swedes do better! Despite this little thing, "Naive" is a very good album with great tunes and good sound. This re-release features a live bonus on the song called "Parallel Universe 1" that displays the technical abilities of the band members at a live show. Very good example, so to say, it even includes a tasty drum solo in the middle of it. The CD lasts over 70 minutes and comes with a fully redesigned artwork!

DIES IRAE, la exhumación de dos clásicos del DEATH/DOOM en México
Cada país tiene sus leyendas musicales, sus subescenas contadas en el boca a boca de seguidor@s que van creciendo a la par que evolucionan sus gustos, vidas y entorno. Algunas bandas se las traga el olvido, esa poderosa ameba de antimateria recolectora de sentimientos pero que tiene la deferencia de dejar `accesos directos´ a todo aquello que guarda. Un simple pensamiento, un recuerdo, un tema, una canción o anécdota lleva al rescate arqueológico (`alpinismo del vacío´) en búsqueda de esas grabaciones que fueron míticas. Se las recuerda en el incosciente colectivo, en el boca a boca, pero casi nunca se las homenajea con la deferencia que merecen.
DIES IRAE se formaron en León, Guanajuato (México) nada más y nada menos que en 1991 (hay fuentes que citan 1994), estando en activo hasta 2002 (posteriormente se reformaron con otro sonido y apuesta en 2009). Recuerdo a la perfección ver en catálogos, revistas y fanzines el seductor título de su demo Ab Imo Pectore, piedra angular del Death/doom mexicano que fuera editada en Reborn Records (en el momento en que escribo esto se está anunciando la reedición en toda su glorioso esplendor así que tendré que echar mis redes a ver si soy capaz de conseguir alguna copia), casa discográfica donde militarían Agony Lords, The Chasm o la que es la banda más recordada de aquellos tiempos Cenotaph (sacarían con ellos su segundo y de sonido más sueco Riding Our Black Oceans aunque el que a mí me vuelva la cabeza es su disco debut de culto The Gloomy Reflection Of Our Hidden Sorrows del 92).
Los sellos Grimm Productions y Exhumed Records rescatan del olvido el debut Etherial (1998) y Naive (2001) trabajando con los másters originales y mejorando el sonido primigenio de unos discos que adolecían de esa cansina/vacua producción de los 90 (fruto de los medios con los que se contaba, evidentemente), añadiendo bonus y redondeando ambos discos con Pit Art y Obis. Ethereal se debe a su época pero lejos de lo que pueda parecer, su nivel compositivo es altísimo y con la nueva remasterización en los Infermo Studios de Suecia sube a otra dimensión.
Es curioso como la escena mexicana tiene muchos paralelismos con la portuguesa (agrupaciones como Desire) con sonidos muy similares (Chaosphere Recordings ya ha desempolvado unas cuantas joyas del Death/Doom portugués). España también tiene bastante fonde de catálogo a reivindicar en el metal extremo y bandas como Golgotha podrán sentirse identificados con el desarrollo vital de Dies Irae... grabar con lo que se tiene y como se puede, crearse un nombre en el circuito de intercambio de cintas y fanzines y a partir de ahí, llegar hasta donde se pueda.
Todos estos aspectos, trabajar desde los másters originales e incluso regrabar (retocar) alguna parte ha engrandecido el acabado de un álbum que bebe mucho de los primeros Opeth o Katatonia pero que tira también a la escena del Death/Doom gótico de los 90 conservando sus temas todavía el vigor de antaño. Es cierto que cuando recupero estas grabaciones tengo que hacer un ejercicio de nostalgia y ponerme en un contexto musical concreto (`resintonizar las orejas´ a la frecuencia adecuada) pero con Etherial no ha sido así... el disco funciona 20 años después, con sus defectos (pocos) y virtudes (muchas); pasajes ambientales, doble juego de voces, uso de la acústica como introducciones... la base rítmica es eficaz pero compleja lo que demuestra que Dies Irae eran bastante avanzados para su entorno y época. Por cierto que la formación en estos momentos estaba formada por Dahern (voces y guitarra rítmica), Carlos Orozco (bajo), Eduardo Gómez (guitarra y voces) y Luis Amel (batería).
Puestos a poner pegas pues soy un devoto de los logos antiguos así que hubiera preferido que se conservara en el nuevo artwork. En definitiva, se trata de un clásico que vuelve a la luz y que conserva intactos (como una mosca en ámbar) sus pequeños toques avantgarde en la guitarra acústica, muy acertada en todos los pasajes, y que redondea un clásico que además tiene la particularidad de no contar con teclados (cosa casi impensable en la época).
La historia sigue y poco después reeditan su Ab Imo Pectore en un Split junto a Agony Lords en Oz Productions; en el 2000 sacan un directo junto a un buen puñado de bandas (Shamash, Disgorge y Buried Dreams) y en 2001 llega lo que se considera su piedra angular, el álbum Naive. La formación es básicamente la misma excepto Luis "Tony" Martinez que entra a la batería. El sonido/estilo es radicalmente distinto y sigue la misma trayectoria vital que Cenotaph... desde un Death/Doom más personal a un Melodeath deudor del sonido sueco y es que es el año en que In Flames estaban en boga, Dark Tranquillity reventaba ventas con Haven o Children of Bodom vendían camisetas hasta en los rastrillos.
Teniendo en cuenta que el disco empieza a componerse sobre el 2000, coincide con la línea genealógica de muchas bandas que en aquel momento intentan buscar su hueco en el mercado (sobre todo el Alemán)... hasta Rotting Christ que había estado coqueteando con lo gótico en A Dead Poem (1998) intentaba recuperar antiguas sensaciones desengrasando el doble bombo en algunos demas de Sleep of the Angels y luego en todo su esplendor con Khronos.
El sonido se ve agrandado gracias a la batuta de Fredrik Nördstrom (Fredman Studios) y Göran Finnberg alcanzando una nitidez impresionante. Las voces mutan hacia ese Black Death inhóspito y a todo trapo que define una década. Me resulta curioso que cambiaran de batería... el apabullante doble bombo de Luis Martínez habla de cotas técnicas que quizás no estaban en su anterior batería, y quizás por ahí vino el cambio de formación. Con todo, no se pierden los pasajes semi acústicos, los arrebatos Opeth, Katatonia y el aroma Doom, todo dentro de una calidad compositiva altísima para un producto grabado claramente con miras a meterse dentro de un pujante mercado discográfico.
Brillan también las colaboraciones de Kostantinos Karamitroudis que había tocado con Ozzy y Marios Iliopoulos (Exhumation, Nightrage) abriendo una interesantísima puerta hacia lo que por aquel entonces estaban haciendo los Septic Flesh. Está claro que Dies Irae tenían calidad para semejante evolución y me pregunto si no querían seguir el paso de los icónicos Cenotaph con su segundo y aclamado Riding Our Black Oceans. Modas aparte, Naive tiene una calidad tremenda (hay detalles bastante avanzados en la música como mini pasajes jazzísticos al bajo en "Parallel Universe I") y sus temas tienen ese equilibrio perfecto entre brutalidad y melodía... además, al contrario que otras que no acabaron de despegar, las voces están perfectamente ejecutadas y dominan el inglés (Sepultura comenzaron con un paupérrimo nivel de pronunciación).
Luego todo se va diluyendo, y cada integrante sigue su camino interrumpiéndose la gira que estaban realizando. Se incluye como bonus un tema en directo del último (casi que único) concierto que dieron justo al inicio de una gran gira y luego si no me equivoco se separan para reinventarse luego en 2012 con Secret Veils of Passion pero eso, eso ya es otra historia. Creo que Naive llegó un pelín tarde al todopoderoso engranaje discográfico de la época que ya iba tendiendo a coquetear con la electrónica y los sampleos (eso daría para otro artículo) pero hoy, gracias a esta tremenda reedición cuidada hasta el último detalle podemos disfrutar en todo su esplendor de dos clasicazos de la escena extrema mexicana; pieza de arqueología musical revitalizada y que hará las delicias de los amantes de estos sonidos.
Ahora, a desempolvar mis viejas revistas y buscar las reseñas que tengo por ahí de Ab Imo Pectore e intentar conseguir alguna copia.

“Naive” from 2001 is an album I hadn’t heard before. But I gotta say that I like this one better. It feels more cohesive. This time around I get a more Dark Tranquillity vibe from the band. And since that is one of my fave bands I find this DIES IRAE album highly enjoyable. This one is a keeper.
