Dies Irae are a band from Mexico that has been featured before in this zine and on this recording plays a melodic mixture of black, dark, doom and death metal and this is a review of their 1998 album "Etherial" which was re-issued in 2018 by Grimm Distribution.
Clean playing starts off the album while all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them. One the second track the music goes into more of a heavier and melodic musical direction which also introduces high pitched black metal screams and elements of dark and doom metal can also be heard in the slower sections of the music.
Clean singing and spoken word parts can also be heard at times along with most of the tracks being very long and epic in length. Elements of melodic death metal can also be heard quite a bit throughout the recording while the solos and leads also bring in a great amount of melody as well as some Spanish guitars also being used on some of the tracks.
When the music speeds up a small amount of blast beats can be heard as well as clean playing also being brought back in certain sections of the music along with the songs also getting very progressive sounding at times, as the album progresses a couple of instrumentals are also added onto the recording and one track also introduces stringed instruments onto the recording and the bonus tracks where recorded live. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover death, darkness, sadness and depression themes.
In my opinion this was a very great sounding recording from Dies Irae and if you are a fan of melodic black, dark, doom and death metal, you should check out this re-issue.

Melodic Doom/Dark Metal мексиканского разлива, причем олдовый, и вот сейчас вынырнувший из черных глубин небытия) с помощью GrimmDistribution. Ну еще, конечно, нужно сказать, что прошедшие со дня его выпуска два десятка лет никак не способствовали тому, чтобы можно было найти эту группу в качестве непоюзанного диска.
И мне кажется, что Doom/Dark Metal никогда и не терял своих позиций, ввиду его средних тестов по агрессии, и высшим качествам по мелодизму — ну это уже по умолчанию - само собой. Другое дело, кто и какой мелодической текилы наливает... кому-то рюмаху, кому-то средне - и потом не вспомнит никто через пяток лет, другие ломят мелодик стафф и имеют особое признание фэнов.
Кста, а ведь это второй уже дисОк DIES IRAE, который решила реанимировать контора GrimmDistribution. Один я уже исследовал на восприятие в нынешние времена. Был разговор уже о DIES IRAE — Naive - 2001 - [re-release] (2019). И кстати, сабжевый диск (1998 года) - это на самом деле первый полноформат команды, из всего трех. Это, к слову, ремастированный компакт. А я то удивляюсь чистоганному, как самогонная слеза, звуку. На выходе у нас 70 с лишним литров(зачеркнуто) минут классического звучания Doom/Dark Metal,
Однако квартет знал, что просто так - на стандартах не проскочишь. И уже с первого альбома они разматывают весьма красивую, полифоническую музыку, с несколькими чистыми вокалами, атмосферную и одновременно заточенную на непосредственное лирическое переживание слушателя - здесь и сейчас. Как в лучших образчиках мелодического рока - куда команда и отмигрировала позднее. Но это бог им судья. А здесь у нас Ethereal.
Граждане музыканты из группы с самого начала имели неслабый музыкальный опыт. Ибо уже на первом диске выдали подборку воистину радио-хитов, где-то в разделе «сумеречноe настроение», “легкая депрессия», «вечерняя паранойя». Последнее кстати отрисовывается, вероятно харшевым вокалом, который вроде и жесткий, но моментально - при необходимости - теряет острые грани и тяготеет к эпичности и вДУМчивости. Вокалист со всеми своими голосами — один, что, конечно, давно не новость, но каждый раз вынуждая заглянуть в буклет (это хорошо, что есть куда посмотреть, там еще тексты опубликованы).
Из отличительных черт этого компакта - крепкое неоклассическое начало в его композиторском подходе. Несомненно, что автор музыки получил консерваторское образование, ну и денег у ребят на студию толковую хватило. ПЕРВОЕ видно по отчетливому акцентированию и воплощению лирических форм, и распределению материала меж солирующими музыкантами (хотя лид гитарист - один), когда в итоге имеем четкий, хотя и сложный рисунок. В отличие от обозреваемого мексиканского квартета, некоторые товарищи полагают, что чем более партий они запихнут в трэк, то тем круче. Меж тем, это далеко не так, сложное музицирование требует адекватного восприятия. Примеры экстремального жанра это как раз доказывают. А ВТОРОЕ понятно оттого, что саунд-инженер свел этот melodic Doom/Dark Metal в законченное, практически идеально звучащее музыкальное произведение. Не думаю, что это было сделано на стадии ремастировании (ну если только остались записи всех партий инструментов раздельно. Маловероятно, но НЕ невозможно).

Свежее переиздание творческого наследия мексиканской дум-формации Dies Irae. Помимо здорово освежившего саунд ремастеринга, оба альбома получили новое оформление и новое лого. На вышедшем в 1998-м “Ethereal” (в оригинале называвшегося чуть по-другому – “Etherial”) группа исполняла востребованный в те годы мелодичный дум-дэт в духе ранних Katatonia и Anathema со всеми присущими стилю признаками (меланхоличные гитарные риффы, красивые мелодии, немного акустики, два типа вокала), разве что, с поправкой на место дислокации, чуть более экспрессивный… Даже в плане экстремального вокала группа использует злой эмоциональный харш, а не более степенный гроул, и то тут, то там проскальзывают мотивы фламенко. Оригинальный трек-лист прирос двумя бонус-треками – коротким инструменталом “Retrospection” и ауттэйком “Lost In Time”, доведя общее время диска до 72 минут. Альбом даже по нынешним меркам выглядит вполне пристойно, слушается не без интереса и находкой из пыльных архивов не выглядит. Во-первых, “Ethereal” содержит как минимум три отличных разнообразных хита – “Shadow Finder”, 11-минутный “The Last Breath” и, пожалуй, лучший номер “Til Your Eyes Turn Black” с просто фантастической концовкой; во-вторых, альбом действительно хорошо записан (разве что можно было бы чуть прибрать высокие частоты у тарелок). Слабое место у него лишь одно – чистый вокал, который, будучи наполненным искренними страдательными интонациями («верю, страдаешь!»), не всегда попадает в ноты… Но даже это вызывает скорее улыбку, а не раздражение.

The album has been originally released in 1998. In 2019, it`s been re-leased and fully re-mastered with bonus tracks. Ethereal is considered as the iconic album. Let`s find out more about this Mexican band...
Aegri Somnia is an atmospheric, instrumental song (other are Ethereal, The Winter Sea and Retrospection) without typical metal distortions but with ethereal sounding guitars and echo effects (they do it often throughout the album).They approach the song pretty easy and the way the music play on your imagination is more intense. This song also showcases the band as good instrumentalist. I think that drummer and guitarists could play full-time progressive/jazzy stuff if they wanted to but they are not doing it on this album that much, at least not on purpose. It`s very interesting and flawless song but I actually didn't know what music direction they were going to take after this track. An answer came around quickly...
Shadow Finder is a track with melodic guitar lamentations and kind of sadness it carries within. They remind me of early Christ Agony albums at those very first minutes of the song. Vocals are around black metal shrieks but vocalist of the band attempts to sing with clean vocals which is okey with me, it`s just not like his singing sound professional or anything like that...Really good to hear atmospheric guitar layers in this and other songs and some drum experimentations as well.
My second favourite song after Shadow Finder is a melodic death metal track Epidermal Macabre which (as the whole album) has elements of doom metal with relatively similar music instrumentations as it is in opening song. There are even some aggressive moments in which they sound a bit like Dark Tranquillity, At The Gates but the album in general has a doomy pace, which is not fast. I also like melodic vocals in last minutes of the song.
I do not know if there is a violin in Last Breath song or just kind of effect they use but music sounds really beautiful and sorrowful, a bit like My Dying Bride. Riffs are dreamy, just sound very good and they follow-up with similar ideas in track Loco Dolenti. It`s the moment of the album when I think that it`s one of the reasons why for some people this album has iconic status. The secret is that they just grab you for your heart and play some emotional music which it likes, not once...
More dynamic track that sounds very metal, almost progressive at times is Til Your Eyes Turn Black in which they put some music twists and as much melodic death and doom metal ideas as they could. Even though, it does not mess with either quality of this track or the band`s musicianship which is kind as good as in early Opeth albums.
It`s the 90`s album - I can tell from specific sound of Ethereal and from the music which still sounds kind of raw – bonus tracks sound rough. But his album luckily has many moments and even songs (I already mentioned them in this review) that sound really good and I can remember or memorize those moments in my head which is why I can easily recommend this album for fans of doom and melodic death metal with catchy moments. I think Ethereal plays greatly on misery and emotions of the listener, and this record deserves its iconic status on Mexican scene. Hopefully, it will be better known album in other places on Earth soon...I would like that...Take your time with this album...Hails from Poland.

The following is a re-release of Dies Irae's first full-length album "Etherial" (1998). The Mexican post metal band was formed in 1994 and it disbanded in 2002, but since 2009 it is active again. On their first album the quartet – Dah (vocals/guitar), Eduardo Gómez (lead guitar), Carlos Orozco (bass) and Luis Martínez (drums) – tried to combine the Gothenburg-style melodic death metal along with experimental, fusion and jazz-like patterns. The resulting alloy is truly variegated and full of emotional passages. Maybe due to the latter one their music is too soft to be called extreme at all, its base is definitely death metal, but there are so many elements coming from classic music, gothic rock, doom metal as well as from the above listed styles that those stylistic borders get really blurred there. It's even technical at some point, so in my opinion the 10 album tracks plus the 2 additional bonuses (all songs were fully remastered, by the way) will give you a good reflection about the band's past work. Not sure, if the new generation of metal heads will be interested by this material, but for diehard fans of Dies Irae it's a must to have this re-release in their collection!!!

DIES IRAE, la exhumación de dos clásicos del DEATH/DOOM en México
Cada país tiene sus leyendas musicales, sus subescenas contadas en el boca a boca de seguidor@s que van creciendo a la par que evolucionan sus gustos, vidas y entorno. Algunas bandas se las traga el olvido, esa poderosa ameba de antimateria recolectora de sentimientos pero que tiene la deferencia de dejar `accesos directos´ a todo aquello que guarda. Un simple pensamiento, un recuerdo, un tema, una canción o anécdota lleva al rescate arqueológico (`alpinismo del vacío´) en búsqueda de esas grabaciones que fueron míticas. Se las recuerda en el incosciente colectivo, en el boca a boca, pero casi nunca se las homenajea con la deferencia que merecen.
DIES IRAE se formaron en León, Guanajuato (México) nada más y nada menos que en 1991 (hay fuentes que citan 1994), estando en activo hasta 2002 (posteriormente se reformaron con otro sonido y apuesta en 2009). Recuerdo a la perfección ver en catálogos, revistas y fanzines el seductor título de su demo Ab Imo Pectore, piedra angular del Death/doom mexicano que fuera editada en Reborn Records (en el momento en que escribo esto se está anunciando la reedición en toda su glorioso esplendor así que tendré que echar mis redes a ver si soy capaz de conseguir alguna copia), casa discográfica donde militarían Agony Lords, The Chasm o la que es la banda más recordada de aquellos tiempos Cenotaph (sacarían con ellos su segundo y de sonido más sueco Riding Our Black Oceans aunque el que a mí me vuelva la cabeza es su disco debut de culto The Gloomy Reflection Of Our Hidden Sorrows del 92).
Los sellos Grimm Productions y Exhumed Records rescatan del olvido el debut Etherial (1998) y Naive (2001) trabajando con los másters originales y mejorando el sonido primigenio de unos discos que adolecían de esa cansina/vacua producción de los 90 (fruto de los medios con los que se contaba, evidentemente), añadiendo bonus y redondeando ambos discos con Pit Art y Obis. Ethereal se debe a su época pero lejos de lo que pueda parecer, su nivel compositivo es altísimo y con la nueva remasterización en los Infermo Studios de Suecia sube a otra dimensión.
Es curioso como la escena mexicana tiene muchos paralelismos con la portuguesa (agrupaciones como Desire) con sonidos muy similares (Chaosphere Recordings ya ha desempolvado unas cuantas joyas del Death/Doom portugués). España también tiene bastante fonde de catálogo a reivindicar en el metal extremo y bandas como Golgotha podrán sentirse identificados con el desarrollo vital de Dies Irae... grabar con lo que se tiene y como se puede, crearse un nombre en el circuito de intercambio de cintas y fanzines y a partir de ahí, llegar hasta donde se pueda.
Todos estos aspectos, trabajar desde los másters originales e incluso regrabar (retocar) alguna parte ha engrandecido el acabado de un álbum que bebe mucho de los primeros Opeth o Katatonia pero que tira también a la escena del Death/Doom gótico de los 90 conservando sus temas todavía el vigor de antaño. Es cierto que cuando recupero estas grabaciones tengo que hacer un ejercicio de nostalgia y ponerme en un contexto musical concreto (`resintonizar las orejas´ a la frecuencia adecuada) pero con Etherial no ha sido así... el disco funciona 20 años después, con sus defectos (pocos) y virtudes (muchas); pasajes ambientales, doble juego de voces, uso de la acústica como introducciones... la base rítmica es eficaz pero compleja lo que demuestra que Dies Irae eran bastante avanzados para su entorno y época. Por cierto que la formación en estos momentos estaba formada por Dahern (voces y guitarra rítmica), Carlos Orozco (bajo), Eduardo Gómez (guitarra y voces) y Luis Amel (batería).
Puestos a poner pegas pues soy un devoto de los logos antiguos así que hubiera preferido que se conservara en el nuevo artwork. En definitiva, se trata de un clásico que vuelve a la luz y que conserva intactos (como una mosca en ámbar) sus pequeños toques avantgarde en la guitarra acústica, muy acertada en todos los pasajes, y que redondea un clásico que además tiene la particularidad de no contar con teclados (cosa casi impensable en la época).
La historia sigue y poco después reeditan su Ab Imo Pectore en un Split junto a Agony Lords en Oz Productions; en el 2000 sacan un directo junto a un buen puñado de bandas (Shamash, Disgorge y Buried Dreams) y en 2001 llega lo que se considera su piedra angular, el álbum Naive. La formación es básicamente la misma excepto Luis "Tony" Martinez que entra a la batería. El sonido/estilo es radicalmente distinto y sigue la misma trayectoria vital que Cenotaph... desde un Death/Doom más personal a un Melodeath deudor del sonido sueco y es que es el año en que In Flames estaban en boga, Dark Tranquillity reventaba ventas con Haven o Children of Bodom vendían camisetas hasta en los rastrillos.
Teniendo en cuenta que el disco empieza a componerse sobre el 2000, coincide con la línea genealógica de muchas bandas que en aquel momento intentan buscar su hueco en el mercado (sobre todo el Alemán)... hasta Rotting Christ que había estado coqueteando con lo gótico en A Dead Poem (1998) intentaba recuperar antiguas sensaciones desengrasando el doble bombo en algunos demas de Sleep of the Angels y luego en todo su esplendor con Khronos.
El sonido se ve agrandado gracias a la batuta de Fredrik Nördstrom (Fredman Studios) y Göran Finnberg alcanzando una nitidez impresionante. Las voces mutan hacia ese Black Death inhóspito y a todo trapo que define una década. Me resulta curioso que cambiaran de batería... el apabullante doble bombo de Luis Martínez habla de cotas técnicas que quizás no estaban en su anterior batería, y quizás por ahí vino el cambio de formación. Con todo, no se pierden los pasajes semi acústicos, los arrebatos Opeth, Katatonia y el aroma Doom, todo dentro de una calidad compositiva altísima para un producto grabado claramente con miras a meterse dentro de un pujante mercado discográfico.
Brillan también las colaboraciones de Kostantinos Karamitroudis que había tocado con Ozzy y Marios Iliopoulos (Exhumation, Nightrage) abriendo una interesantísima puerta hacia lo que por aquel entonces estaban haciendo los Septic Flesh. Está claro que Dies Irae tenían calidad para semejante evolución y me pregunto si no querían seguir el paso de los icónicos Cenotaph con su segundo y aclamado Riding Our Black Oceans. Modas aparte, Naive tiene una calidad tremenda (hay detalles bastante avanzados en la música como mini pasajes jazzísticos al bajo en "Parallel Universe I") y sus temas tienen ese equilibrio perfecto entre brutalidad y melodía... además, al contrario que otras que no acabaron de despegar, las voces están perfectamente ejecutadas y dominan el inglés (Sepultura comenzaron con un paupérrimo nivel de pronunciación).
Luego todo se va diluyendo, y cada integrante sigue su camino interrumpiéndose la gira que estaban realizando. Se incluye como bonus un tema en directo del último (casi que único) concierto que dieron justo al inicio de una gran gira y luego si no me equivoco se separan para reinventarse luego en 2012 con Secret Veils of Passion pero eso, eso ya es otra historia. Creo que Naive llegó un pelín tarde al todopoderoso engranaje discográfico de la época que ya iba tendiendo a coquetear con la electrónica y los sampleos (eso daría para otro artículo) pero hoy, gracias a esta tremenda reedición cuidada hasta el último detalle podemos disfrutar en todo su esplendor de dos clasicazos de la escena extrema mexicana; pieza de arqueología musical revitalizada y que hará las delicias de los amantes de estos sonidos.
Ahora, a desempolvar mis viejas revistas y buscar las reseñas que tengo por ahí de Ab Imo Pectore e intentar conseguir alguna copia.

I remember this band from back in the days. If I am not too far off I have even heard an album or two with this Mexican band. Now that their albums from 1998 and 2001 get a rerelease I can relive all those memories from back in the day. I could do with a refreshment as I don’t remember clearly what they sounded like. “Ethereal” is the first of the rereleased albums I tackle. Officially released in 1998 this might very well have been my very first encounter with this band. I cannot really remember how I got in touch with them but I guess it must have been from reading fanzines. As it was almost 23 years since I last heard anything from their recorded works I didn’t really remember what they sounded like. And upon hearing this I must say that it ain’t all to my liking. In a way they remind me of Tiamat around that time.
