Educated Scum-a great way to describe metalheads, and a pretty cool name for a Russian grindcore unit. Even though I consider myself friendly and have been accused of being nice, I never really bought the whole “metalheads are teddy bears” shtick, but as a whole, we tend to be a rather intelligence bunch.
There’s more to a band than a cool sounding name, and Educated Scum jams a lot into “Chameleon,” a lead track off their new album Corrupt. Only two minutes and forty seconds long it’s senseless to break things down second by second so dear readers you’re just gonna have to trust me when I say that “Chameleon” is an ass-kicker.

Educated Scum is an imaginatively band name I think?! The band was founded in Moscow nineteen years ago as an extreme metal project. The first release From Chaos To Disorder (originally recorded in 2003 and re-recorded and re-released in 2015) is fast grinding death metal influenced by classic death and thrash metal bands. The second album React has more metalcore/deathcore vibe yet still maintaining brutality and lyrics mostly about politics as a tribute to grindcore pioneers.
Educated Scum was actually formed by Mikhail “MishGun” Kuznetsov and Dmitriy “Dimebag” Dasov in 2000 as a fun home grindcore project. They’ve already had some experience working together in some nameless school thrash-metal band – Dimebag as a lyrics author and MishGun as a guitar player and singer. By that time the band’s split-up and now MishGun and Dimebag decided to test some new home studio software and try some extreme grindcore. Dimebag took on growling and lyrics and MishGun – all other instruments. The efforts gave birth to 6-track demo. It took 3 years to put ideas together and record a full-length album consisting of 16 tracks 16-minute long.
The third (and second full-length) album Corrupt was released recently. by The album is an alloy of classical death metal in the spirit of Napalm Death and Carcass with modern groove influences in the spirit of Decapitated and even Lamb Of God! Speedy blast beats performed by session drummer Dmitry Fiskin are perfectly combined with technically swinging riffs and beautiful solos performed by famous guests: Konstantin Seleznev (ex-Trizna, ex-Фактор Страха), one of the main virtuoso of the country Oleg Izotov and both guitarists of the cult thrash metal formation “Железный Поток” Alexey Karpov and Vladimir Blesnov! And one track is sung by Kirill Nemolyaev (Forces United, Бони НЕМ), a cult figure of the stage…
Compact, carbon monoxide songs, dotted with a bunch of samples of famous Russian politicians and even actors, demonstrate a new round of development of the band, which should please not only the fans of grindcore, but also qualitative death metal in the broad sense with a powerful, modern sound!

По части музыки больше всего впечатлили “Chameleon”, “Cold Civil War” и “Downfall of Morality” (да всё понравилось, чего уж там…), а из стихов наибольший отклик вызвали всё тот же “Chameleon” и “The Birth of Conflict / The Death of Peace”.

Sometimes I prefer to keep it simple and short, for the sonic terror must do the talking. This surely goes for this release, called Corrupt, which is the second full length studio album by Moscow-based act Educated Scum. The band is active for about two decades, but they did not create that much stuff. Their former studio recording dates from 2011 (called React, by the way), and afterwards there was just a compilation (link for the review on that album, see below) and a live registration. But that does not matter, for these crazy-heads have now returned with Corrupt.
This new album was recorded by original member and the band’s main guitar player Mikhail Kuznetsov aka MishGun, who wrote all music and took care of engineering (with exception of the drum parts), mix and mastering. Once again he was joined by lyricist Dmitry ‘Dimebag’ Dasov (who did some backing vocals) and a few other session and studio musicians, amongst which members of e.g. Forces United, Back Door Asylum or Alkonost. The physical version (compact disc) comes with an eight-page booklet in an edition of 500 copies, and it got released once more in a partnership in between More Hate Productions and GrimmDistribution.
I wanted to keep and simple, so what about this: Educated Scum perform Grinding Death Metal, timeless Grindcore, or rather Punk-laden Deathcoregrindmetalfilth?... Indeed, you’re welcome…
No, seriously, this band injects the most groovy elements from Old School Death Metal with a punky approach of deadly Grindcore. And you know, they do it with passion and persuasion. The better part is based on melodious riffage (with a couple of truly crafted solos and leads) and deep-growling grunts, supported by a heavy and low-tuned rhythms section. Besides, the addition of technically well-crafted experiments (mainly guitar-wise) and additional (vocal) samples is quite cool. Despite the grinding influence, the tempo is not that whirlwindy at all. Yes, there are several lightning-fast passages, evidently, but in general the stuff is energetic yet mid-tempo to semi-fast oriented. And what’s more, the hooks and breaks are so ingeniously subtle, represented in a mostly organic transition.
Characteristic is the groovy approach, on top of the technically high-skilled performance. Despite the low-tuned riffs, that groovy attitude sounds like a bridge in between the old styled trend and a more modernised vision. Let’s call it timeless when talking about the song writing concept. Consider it a crossover in between the primal roots of old, and the progressive possibilities of our current era.
Add some elements from Thrash Metal, Hardcore and Doomcore on top of it, and even moments of tranquillity (what about the intriguing acoustic intermezzo and masterly executed solo in The Birth Of Conflict / The Death Of Piece), and you’ll notice that this Russian act will be ‘attractive’ to quite a huge open-minded public. Fun, yet still earnest it is…

An instrumental that features mumbling sounds opens Corrupt. Is March Of The Discontented actually an instrumental? The song after it is thrashy hardcore. Stupid And Blind (Red Utopia Part I) is chaotic and seems to refer to seven decades of communism in the band's motherland. Cold Civil War shifts focus to wealth disparity. Musically, rough sounding hardcore is one good description. An interesting solo in this third song lifts the album. Downfall Of Morality tackles another social issue with thrashy riffs. Corruption, not for the first time, features a few verses in Russian. It is not too distinguishable from its predecessor. A Sepultura influence and grindcore sounds are detectable. No Way Out But Down (Extinction Mode) captures humanity's current state better than most with its title and 'A contagious infection called human ignorance' verse. Once again the added speed and solo add positives to Corrupt. Chameleon features more Eugene Tkachev screams and a few squeals too. The Birth Of Conflict/The Death Of Peace is by far the longest song at over six minutes. Plenty of thrashy riffs with a lot to say about humanity on this one but with an acoustic and slow end. Corrupt ends with Hidden Track I and Hidden Track II the first of which is a tongue in cheek 28 seconds and the second is blank until the last 30 seconds which is only (Russian) spoken words. This 30 minutes long full length is even shorter than it is listed!

Educated Scum is a Moscow-located extreme metal combo initiated in the year of 2000. "Corrupt" is their second full-length album up to now. It consists of 10 pieces, which blend different styles altogether. Despite the often used blasting drum parts, this band isn't about the pure form of grindcore or death metal, because there's a lot of influences coming from hardcore, groove metal and especially thrash metal. So it's not strange that the name of Sepultura many times appeared in my mind during their half an hour long CD. Elements of modern, like deathcore and metalcore are also widely presented there. Generally speaking, the tracks found on "Corrupt" are not about uniqueness and that's for sure. However, it was arranged in professional way. The sound is OK too. Well, if someone would ask what impressed me the most there? I would definitely say the masterfully executed solos. Those ones are really worth to listen to! Other than that there was nothing else found of my interest. I believe this stuff was exclusively done for the diehard fans of Educated Scum!!!
