I bet you’re surprised this is a Russian band!
Well, apparently their name translates to Steel Nerves, and two of their songs are anti-war, but that’s about all I can tell ya insofar as background information. You’re on your own, kid!
I can tell you about the music, which feels like a sort of NWOAHM thing – clean vocals, an almost emo feel to the singing and melodic orientation, but a rather traditional metal sound on the band end.
You can’t even split the baby and call ’em metalcore, though as with the emo comparison, there are definite similarities in feel and approach…so consider it a trad metal leaning act that rose out of the emo and/or metalcore scenes for the best idea of what you’re getting into here.
It’s pretty powerful in a certain way (as you might expect from all that metal riffing mixed with the over-emotiveness of the newer hybridizations of punk and metal aforementioned), and clean singing with metal riffing (which even leans a touch thrash on the second track, which is filled with Sabbath-meets-early Metallica riffing and full-on double bass drumming) always works for me, particularly when the orientation is towards the melodic.
They could be singing about Perestroika, Glasnost or the price of butter, for all I know – but all I can tell you is that I kinda liked it.
And since a Russian friend finally corrected my written version (which I previously mistranslated in print as “nostrovya”, which is how it’s said), I can finally say this in a way you guys’ll understand:

Как выглядит современный хэви-метал? Вариантов может быть много, а одна из возможных модификаций представлена в виде брянской группы Стальные Нервы. Команда словно сплавила воедино классический “арийский” хэви-метал, фэнтези-панк в духе Короля И Шута, колхозный панк Сектора Газа, авторскую песню и элементы трэша вкупе с современным звуком.
Объёмный грувовый саунд и пространные тексты – главное достоинство группы, ну а среди минусов стоит отметить слабый вокал и немного скомканные гитарные партии. Впрочем, если воспринимать альбом “Открой Глаза” как теоретизирование на тему страшных сказок в стиле хоррор-панк, то все недостатки окажутся элементами особого стиля команды.
И то, понравится ли вам альбом, будет напрямую зависеть от того, что вы от него ожидаете. Хотите найти аналог Арии времён Кипелова? Будете категорически разочарованы. Вам достаточно той же Арии, но времён Беркута? Тогда Стальные Нервы именно то, что надо! Вам давно хотелось отыскать что-нибудь в духе группы Горшка и Князя, но более металлическое? Можете записываться в фэны этой команды!
На альбоме 10 композиций собственного сочинения, среди которых встречаются в том числе такие неоднозначные эпики, как “Шалава”, “Деньги” и “Франкенштейн”, а также финальный кавер на хит калужского Апокалипсиса “Блокада”, а по мере прослушивания диска возникает ощущение, что группу создали те самые ребята, что не дают нам спать летней порой, наигрывая что-то на своих гитарах.
Ребята подключили гитары к мощным усилителям, обзавелись барабанами и сейчас решили уже не ограничиваться рамками одних только локальных дворов, а транслировать свои песни на всю державу. Впрочем, на пластинке есть действительно интересные треки, взять хоть ударные вещи “Иуда” и “Святая Война”, балладу “О Любви” или ту же “Деньги”.
Увы, я не услышал на альбоме практически ничего из арсенала NWOBHM в отличие от моего штатовского коллеги, зато могу с точностью сказать, что текстов про Перестройку и про рост цен на масло у Стальных Нервов нет. Я могу согласиться, что это хэви-метал, но хэви-метал весьма специфический.
Прыгающие риффы в духе Iron Maiden вполне неплохи, а отсутствие замороченных мелодий вполне можно воспринимать как позитивный аспект. Если вы любите музыку “без всякого лишнего пафоса, накрученных структур, душноты и идиотически надуманной мелодики”, то материал Стальных Нервов должен подойти как нельзя кстати.
Ну а если объективно, диск не содержит каких-либо музыкальных или лирических откровений, назвать его прорывом как ни крути не получится, а общая ценность компакта для истории тяжёлого рока близится к нулевой, но кого это волнует? Только философствующих эстетов вроде меня, которые вечно роются в пыльных архивах в поисках каких-нибудь новых Cities или Omen.
Рядовым поклонникам в меру тяжёлой музыки, не мудрствующим лукаво, этот релиз может весьма понравиться с одним только “но”. На этом альбоме вокальные партии являются главной проблемой коллектива, а попытки петь как воздушная сирена выглядят, мягко говоря, не очень впечатляюще, а потому можно только порадоваться за команду в связи с приходом в их состав свободной вокалистки Юлии Кравцовой.

Don’t ask me to tell you what this Russian band is called or what the name of the album is because I am at the same loss as you. But despite the problem with the name this turned out to be a really cool heavy metal album. That they sing in Russian is no problem. It doesn’t make or brake the album. The music is what is important and that they do really well. This is modern heavy metal. Not to be confused with modern metal, which is something totally different. So if you like bands like Sabaton and Civil War and what else they are called you might find this highly entertaining.
A couple of years ago, I can in touch with Alexey Korolyov, a very sympathetic guy from Saint-Petersburg who ran (and still runs) the label Satanath Records, and the guy behind the very interesting projects Satanath and Abigorum. In mean time he also founded Symbol Of Domination Productions, another excellent label from Russia. Both labels characterise diversity, yet with a certain darkened, f*cked-up attitude. All kinds of extreme Metal are like welcome on both labels. Many of the releases on those labels were distributed, or co-distributed, by Belarus-based GrimmDistribution.
A while ago, Alexey informed me that he took over GrimmDistribution. Initially I thought that specific organisation would keep on focusing on the distribution of stuff from Satanath Records and Symbol Of Domination Productions, and others, yet apparently GrimmDistribution was sort of redirected to a label on its own too. So, as from about one year ago, Alexey does run three different, yet closely related, labels. Congratulations!
First release on the newly reformed GrimmDistribution roster is the second recording of Стальные нервы ('stalnye nervy'), a four-piece hailing from the city of Brjansk, not that far away from the Belarussian and Ukrainian borders. The moniker means ‘nerves of steel’, by the way. This sophomore album is called Открой глаза ('otkroy glaza'), Russian for ‘open your eyes’, and it lasts for more than one hour. It gets released in an edition of 500 copies with a simple four-page booklet, without songs texts or whatever. Yet since my Russian language is limited to an insulting vocabular, I do not think it’s a problem. Native-Russian speaking people, on the other hand – but that’s a discussion not to go deeper into right here.
The band performs a powered form of traditional Heavy Metal with attention for all ingredients from the earlier years. The whole is quite guitar-based for sure, with a foundation based on energetic guitar riffs, with dueling guitar leads and a melodic bass sound. All this gets supported by quite varying drum patterns, which give the whole a fierce pepper-in-the-ass attitude. The whole thing gets permanently injected by melodic guitar leads and sharp, fast-paced solos, quite overpowering and hammering. Even though the band does not pretend to be an Epic Doom outfit, some of the heavier parts surely balance over to that way – which isn’t but a great thing to notice, of course. Other moments there are dual leads that tend to the NWOBHM-scene of Old, then again a thrashier Eighties-inspired spirit penetrated the whole. But in all cases, the coherence remains.
Vocally, there’s that well-thought use of two types. At the one hand, and that goes for the better part of the vocal appearance, you got those clean vocals by Roman (the guitarist of My Widow). Even though ‘clean’ isn’t exactly the correct description, for Roman’s voice has something unpolished, little rough. No high-pitched screams, just melodious voices is what you get. Besides, to my opinion Roman succeeds to put some emotion in his performance. At the other hand, you got some melodious harmony choirs and chants too – also not that much a stranger to this specific type of old styled heavy Metal – and it sort of brings hints of Power Metal to mind.
To end this. Стальные нервы conclude their album with a cover by АПОКАЛИПСИС. I do not why, but the own songs are quite more impressing than this cover version. But I do understand the link in between them for sure – make no mistake about that. It’s just that there are better tracks to cover, to my opinion. But overall, this whole album might be an arousing experience for Heavy Metal fans that crave for the earlier years of, especially, the West-European scene.

Вот это да! Сабж - первый диск GrimmDistribution — 001GD. «Надо же с чего-то начинать», - подумали в 2016 году в главном офисе контры и запустили на орбиту брянскую хэви-метальную группу СТАЛЬНЫЕ НЕРВЫ. Такое знаковое название — оно как бы подсказывает. Что? Поймем в итоге.
Второй альбом группировки, которая уже успела один раз поменять название (на сабжевое), музыкантов, и говорят, сейчас пригласила вокалистку. Еще в прессухе указано, что она пришла как раз после записи этого диска. Честно говоря, я не знаю, как она поет, но подумал, уже прослушивая этот диск, что может было бы лучше, если музыканты не торопились с выпуском компакта. Однако КАК БЫ ТО НИ БЫЛО, мы не знаем всех перипетий и звеньев причинно-следственной цепочки. И слушаем ЭТОТ диск, а не какой иной, который нам хотелось послушать.
И потому без всякой жалости и каких-то преференций начнем.
ВИА СТАЛЬНЫЕ НЕРВЫ имеют стальные нервы и потому играют прото-хэви-метал, то есть такой, который дислоцируется возле корней это стиля, и имеет уже все наличные внешние признаки оного. Кстати, я невольно припомнил одно пластиночное издание польского происхождения под броским названием Металмания 87 с классным олдовым оформлением. Там группы приблизительно в таком же духе исполняли.
Формация работает в хэви-металле, грубом и напористом, агрессивном и мощном - как удар топором. Вокалисту откровенно по, что о нем подумают, и он даже пытается брать верхние ноты. Это намеренная отсылка к каменному веку металлического жанра, его самым троглодитским временам, когда ВСЯ общественность была ПРОТИВ. И только когда поперли продажи такого продукта, критики сменили пластинку, они начали вещать, что это все СУПЕР. Тогда-то в масс-медиа и начали пестовать железный жанр. Доходило до смешного (читал у Дмитрия Бравого https://vk.com/id1136557 ), что в те стародавние времена один и тот же журналист сначала оплевывал команду, а через полгода пел дифирамбы.
И еще одно соображение, - когда я начал слушать диск, мне показалось, что я мыслю точно так же, что и толпа 80-х — что это такое? что за ад? откуда взялись эти парни? В этом и есть основная ценность этого артефак(т)а. Среди напыщенного и вылизанного металла нате вам вот такой тихий ужас.
Так в этом и был смысл ТОГДАШНЕГО металла - до предела запугать, ошарашить, бить по больным местам, поразить до глубины души. А уж какие будут для того употреблены средства...
Да, СТАЛЬНЫМ НЕРВАМ нужен продюсер, звукорежиссер, еще много кто и что. НО. Они взяли и выпустили этот диск. И не думайте, что они не видят своих огрехов, не считайте людей глупее себя, всегда ошибетесь. Я лично думаю (уверен на 100%), что команда со стальными яй(ой) нервами просто решила зафиксировать свой результат вот на этот временной период. Вам нравится? Отлично! Я также уверен, что пласт найдет своего слушателя. (А так и есть, уже отписав, полез посмотреть вк группы. Вот отклики. Илья пишет: - Музыка просто великолепна... Впрочем, очень неплохо... Желаю вам развиваться в том же духе...) Или команда раздаст этот диск. Не нравится? Так вам никто и не засовывает этот компакт!
А думаю, что все-таки среди олдового люда найдется достаточно маньяков, которые ради того старого духа прото-металла приобретут этот диск, который выпущен на нормальной конторе, в нормальном оформлении.
Еще раз (лучше поздно, чем никогда )) ) поздравляем GrimmDistribution с первачком и желаем крепкого здоровья (стальных нервов). Они вам понадобятся.

Стальные Нервы eli ei-kyrillisesti ilmaisten Steel Nerves on nykynimellään noin neljän vuoden ikäinen bändi, joka aiemmin toimi noin kolmen vuoden ajan Mad Village -nimellä. Yhtyeen vuosi sitten julkaistu kakkosalbumi Открой глаза (Open Your Eyes) saapui vihdoin Imperiumiin. Sisältönä on tyylipuhdas melodinen heavy metal.
Viisimiehisen bändin meno on selkeän länsimaalaisvaikutteista. Riffit on laadittu genren konventioita noudatten eikä pyörää ole missään mielessä lähdetty keksimään uudestaan. Meininki on keskitempoisen menevää ja helposti sisäitettävää kamaa. Iron Maidenit ja vastaavat on riffeistä päätellen selvästi kuunneltu. Yhtye ei tee mitään sinänsä huonosti. Kappaleet ovat passeleita, joskin hieman turhankin tavanomaisia jäädääkseen ihmeemmin mieleensä.
Oikeastaan Open Your Eyesiä vaivaa sama riesa kuin esimerkiksi edellä mainitun hevimammutin Book of Soulsia (2015). Kaikki on periaatteessa kohdallaan ja tyylilaji hyvin hallussa. Silti levy tuntuu kädenlämpöiseltä ja koukuttomalta. Tämä hämmentää, sillä yksittäisiä liidejä ja melodioita kuunnellessa tuntuisi, että levyssä olisi aineksia enempäänkin.
Vika ei ole edes soundipuolessa, joka on yllättävän vahva. Kitaroissa on juuri sopivasti jerkkua ja rummut tykittävät vahvasti. Virveli posahtaa vähän liiankin kanssa; ilmassa on lievää Painkiller-syndroomaa.
Suurin kiusaantumiseni nousee esille laulaja Nikolay Ryabchevskyn tulkinnasta. Mies ei ole tumpelo, mutta äänessä ja etenkin venäjänkielisessä ääntelyssä on jotain häiritsevää. Tämä lienee kuitenkin enemmän makuasia kuin universaali ongelma. Joka tapauksessa tämä yhdistettynä yli tunnin kestoon pidemmän päälle väsyttää ja syö levyn tehoja.
Открой глаза ei ole sinänsä paskempi levy, mutta sitä on vaikea nostaa juurikaan keskinkertaisuuden yläpuolelle.

Establecidos en la ciudad rusa de Briansk desde 2013 -si bien dos años antes ya habían comenzado su andadura como Mad Village-, los chicos de Стальные Нервы (Nervios de acero) publicaron hará casi dos años “Открой глаза” (“Abre tus ojos”), el que a día de hoy es todavía su más reciente trabajo. Después de los consabidos cambios de nombre y formación, grabaron su primer álbum “Дайте Свободы” (“Dale un regalo”) en 2014 y un single con un tema nuevo y un par de versiones ese mismo año, allanando ambas referencias el camino para la aparición de este segundo larga duración que diseccionaremos a continuación. Tenemos ante nosotros a una resolutiva y solvente banda de heavy metal -Roman Derevyanko a la voz y la guitarra, Roman Nikolayev al bajo, Sergey Derevenchenko a la batería y Dmitry Kuzmin a la guitarra- con una palpable impronta melódica que brilla con todo su esplendor en los harmoniosos puentes y estribillos de las diferentes piezas de este “Открой глаза”, el cual despacha a diestra y siniestra veloces y enérgicos riffs, buenas dosis de solos y guitarras dobladas a raudales. Entre los temas del álbum, cantados todos en ruso y cuyo concepto general gira alrededor de la estupidez humana y de su facilidad en cometer siempre los mismos errores, merecen destacarse Шалава -con un toque de hard rock americano vital y desenfadado-, О любви -un tema lento con un sencillo arpegio al que se le suman posteriormente el bajo y la batería, y que estalla de forma memorable cuando la distorsión se apodera del estribillo-, Деньги -un corte con un riff incontestable que crece cuando se incorpora la segunda guitarra, mientras la épica que tiñe el puente hace el resto-, Пески времён -pieza con excelente cambio de ritmo en el puente y heroico estribillo que desemboca en unas mastodónticas guitarras y un machacón doble bombo- o los oscuros y pesados riffs de Иуда o Пленники райского сада.
El aspecto más flojo de todo el trabajo, producción aparte, lo encontramos cuando Derevyanko intenta llegar a los tonos más altos: en esa maniobra el cantante pierde el control sobre su voz y parece que esta vaya a romperse en cualquier instante. Pero dicho asunto tampoco debería preocuparnos demasiado ya que según parece, tras la grabación del disco, una vocalista (Yuliya Kovaleva) es quien ha pasado a ocuparse del micrófono.
Está claro que Стальные Нервы no han descubierto las sopas de ajo con “Открой глаза” pero si te apetece saborear un opulento plato de heavy metal puro, embrionario y sin aditivos, aquí tienes servido tu pantagruélico banquete.

For those of you who are going to learn Russian, I can spare you some effort. My translation of band`s name is Nerves Of Steel. Where is steel there is often heavy metal!
First of all, songs are very melodic where come to vocals, guitar leads and solos - all the way from start to the end of the album. They prefer speed on guitars like in German heavy metal (Helloween) but also have a nice, slower track, almost like a ballad (5). Few times I recognized some Iron Maiden/Judas Priest influences, not very obvious, but still, it`s good they have them. The sound is average, not that good to give songs the greatest of shapes but OK. On the other hand, the music dynamics are pretty good and it`s more important for me when I think about this record.
...And then. I tried to find those most catchy moments or best arrangements in songs. Every time, through music, they gave me answer that there are not just 2-3 good tracks here but much more. More precisely the whole album is tending to have really good compositions with a lot of diversity. Also, they do want their music to have songs that are never the same. The band indeed, do their best to come up with those catchy songs that nearly reach that thunder-striking level of speed and build heavy metal vibe. It felt pretty good to hear highlights of the album which are songs 4, 5, 6(!), 8,10,11 while other tracks are possibly memorable and still quite good.
Hope that Стальные нервы will survive on a scene. This album has a potential to make them better band in the future. They have vocals in Russian language which is original and sound differently than other heavy metal bands.
