Coffee and black metal seem to have become big parts of my morning routine lately.  I don't know if that's a healthy thing to start my day but it defititely wakes me up.  Today, I selected a surprisingly varied album from Hatecrowned, a band from Tripoli, Lebanon.  They have been around since 2011, founded as a duo with some guests on drums and bass.  As far as I can find, this seems to be their debut album.  It's a damn good one, a must for black metal fans from nearly any generation.

Yes, Hatecrowned seems to be inspired by bands like Behemoth, Watain or Taake.  They share a similar hook, a raw, primitive and most of all ferocious sound.  Yet, here and there some influences from post-black metal come shining through, placing this band firmly in the modern day scene.  Furthermore, there are some death metal elements present as well.  'Coronation of the Eternal and Pure', for instance, sounds surprisingly different from the brilliant blackened anthem 'Infest and Conquer'.

That shouldn't be a problem by the way.  All of these songs are blistering pieces of extreme metal.  Hell, opener 'Ominous Birth of Serpent' could be the shortest funeral doom song of all time.  'Newborn Serpent', the track, even takes elements from old school heavy metal, mainly in the guitars solos in the calmer passages, right before all hell breaks loose again.  And hell does break loose, damn this music is intense at times. On 'Cave of Salvation' the chaotic sound of old school Scandinavian black metal reigns surpreme.

I really dig this album.  It has a great sound, plenty of variation and a perfect atmosphere.  It breathes despair, fear, misantropy and hopelessness.  It's extreme metal at its best, regardless of genre boundaries and other useless limitations.  I recommend it to every high-speed headbanger out there.  I'm sure it will find its way to my CD-player often from now one, which isn't really the case with many black metal albums to be honest...

Yes. This comes definately out of hell. I’m sure! This album is a great punch in the face!”Newborn Serpent”has even more death metal influences then it’s predecessor debut EP”Warpact in Black”and takes the aggression to an even higher level. Especially the songs „Coronation of the Eternal and Pure” and „Funeral Reverie” crush everything on their way.

The vocals are unbelievably evil and strong, both the shrieks and the growls are totally flawless. Well,Ayvaal is a great vokillist, no doubt about that. His low and high vocals are just fucking EVIL sounding piece of Hell.

This is THE perfect mix of brutal death metal with black metal. Brutal as all fucking hell riffs, mixed with dark black metal melody and tremelo picking,The guitars are crunchy and powerful, the bass is harsh the drums are complete blast-fests that will cave your fucking head in,the drumming is top-notch, and the musicianship is perfection. These guys must spend fucking days just sitting in a basement somewhere playing their instruments. Some sections of this CD are so well-written instrumentally that I can’t imagine anything better. It sends a chill down my spine, for instance, to listen to the guitar attack on „Infest and Conquer”.Overall, this album is a riff machine, Hellbent on sending your Soul downwards. Seriously fucking cult.

Hatecrowned  are  a  band  from  Lebanon  that  plays  a  very  raw  and  misanthropic  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2015  album  "Newborn  Serpent"  which  was  released  as  a  joint  effort  between  Satanath  Records  and  Darzamadicus Records.

Clean  guitars  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  deep  and  grim  black  metal  screams  a  few  seconds  later  that  also  get  high  pitched  after  awhile  along  with  heavy guitars  also  making  their  presence  known  and  after  the  intro  the  music  goes  into  more  of  a  fast  and  raw  direction  along  with  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats.

Throughout  the  recording  you  can  hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  when  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  very  dark  and  melodic  sounding  and  the  fast  riffs  also  use  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  at  times  the  music  brings  in  an  old  school  Swedish  vibe  in  the  faster  sections  of  the  music.

Some  of  the  riffs  and  growls  also  add  a  touch  of  death  metal  onto  the  recording and  they  also  bring  in  a  brief  avant  garde  instrumental  before  returning  back  to  a  true  style  of  black  metal  which  also  shows  some  of  the  riffs  also  bring  in  more  morbid  sounding  melodies  and  there  is  also  a  track  that  also  brings  in  a  brief  use  of  acoustic  guitars  and  the  title  track  is  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

Hatecrowned  plays  a  musical  style  that  is  very  heavily  rooted  mostly  in  the  very  fast,  raw  and  heavy  European  black  metal  tradition  and  also add  in  a  touch  of  death  metal  to  create  a  very  heavy  album,  the  production  sounds  very  powerful  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  Misanthropy,  Darkness,  Death  and  Anti  Cosmic  Luciferianism  themes.

In  my  opinion  Hatecrowned  are  a  very  great  sounding  heavy,  fast  and  raw  misanthropic  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should c heck  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE "Infest  And  Conquer"  "Newborn  Serpent"  and  "Wolves".

Based in Tripoli, Hatecrowned is a black metal duo that formed in 2011. They released a fairly well received EP in 2013, Warpact in Black, which was a solid debut, if a little difficult to digest. It wasn’t that the album was extremely dense or complicated, but the band crammed a barrage of influences into a short release creating a rather ambitious effort. One got the impressive that, given the proper breathing room, Hatecrowned could focus and nurture these influences into a devastating and crushing sound.

Two years after their debut, the band returned with their debut full length album, Newborn Serpent, which was released on CD through Russian label Satanath Records. With ten tracks and nearly forty minutes of music, Hatecrowned allows themselves a little more room to stretch their multifaceted sound. Bringing a base of heavy handed and blustery black metal, the band weaves traces of miasmic death metal and trudging doom into their sound, once again delivering a varied barrage of tracks. While the debut EP suffered from a lack of consistency, Newborn Serpent shows the band incorporating this writhing mass of ideas into a cohesive, destructive sound. Swirling trem riffs and blasting drums surge forth while the vocals rip and tear with a mix of rasped screams and deep, menacing growls. These moments make way for crushing, twisted death metal riffs with pummeling double bass runs and trudging, sewer dwelling tempos with thundering bass lines.

While the production is certainly stronger on this go around, there’s still a murky haze shrouding the entire release. It’s not a huge issue, given the style, but the lingering fog presents an unrelenting wall of sound. While it mirrors their darkened, miasmic approach, it’s a fatiguing listen. Occasional keyboard flourishes float across the background and sporadic lead guitar licks pop up throughout, offering a small glimpse of melody among the inexorable black metal. Despite this, the band sounds more organic and much more devastating thanks to the guest rhythm section of GoreDrummer (Pit of Carnage) and bassist Eddy Ferekh (Celestial Winds).

While Newborn Serpent is a challenging listen because of the heavy handed production and melting pot of influences, it’s a crushingly heavy take on black metal. Lebanon isn’t exactly a verdant hotspot of metal bands, so it’s good to see Hatecrowned gaining some steam. The band’s debut full length is a marked improvement over their EP: a fleshed out rhythm section; stronger production values; and a diverse yet cohesive approach to black metal. Certainly an act to keep your eyes on.

This is the début album from Lebanese Black Metal band Hatecrowned.

This is an album that finds its origins in old-school raw black metal. The band take this base though and expand upon it, introducing some darker death metal influences and atmosphere. Bleak melodies and leads occasionally break the blackened surface, but for the most part this is an album that’s swamped in atmospheric distortion from the rhythm guitars. It’s like a fuzzed-up wall of grim auras, ready and willing to crush, smother and consume all in its path. There are also solos, which I approve of big-style.

This methodology works well for the band, and the songs on Newborn Serpent are compelling hymns to hatred and malevolence. The dark death metal elements are combined skilfully into the even darker black metal core of the band, resulting in songs that just seethe misanthropy. Screamed vocals are complemented by deeper growls, providing the songs with enough tools to spread their sinister manifesto.

I like that the band don’t stick to just one way of writing throughout; there’s a good amount of variety here for the style. Some songs are pure black metal, while others let the death metal seep in. Some songs are all about the bile and venom, while others have more atmosphere or pacing. Fast/slow, long/short; the band don’t limit themselves to just one method of assault and should be roundly commended for this.

Very good, very good indeed. Hatecrowned have impressed.

Hatecrowned is a black metal group from Lebanon. Fitting in nicely with the rest of the Satanath Records lineup, these musicians until now have only released an EP. But the topic of today's review, their first full length, is Newborn Serpent. If you like your black metal with a touch of death, just press play.

The bass on "For Scum Thou Art, And Unto Scum Shalt Thou Return" is a swaying pendulum of grimness. Its deliberate pacing is in stark contrast to the racing tremolo patterns. But if there is something here with more rampancy than the guitars, it's the vocals. Sounds tear and spew forth as opposed to what could be called a "delivery." The register favors high shrieks and howls, but sometimes dips into a death growl.

Speaking of death metal, there is definitely an element of melodeath in the solos and some of the riffs a la Dissection. "Newborn Serpent" comes to mind, with it's increased focus on melody and hooks, not to mention the acoustic inclusions. And "Funeral Reverie" opens like a straight up brutal death entry with its grunts and guitar squeals before returning to more blackened sensibilities.

But all in all, this is a work of darkness and bleak world view. The lyrics aren't even essential to picking up on this fact. Enough is said in the instrumentation. Those descending guitar lines, pounding drums, and vacuous shrieks fill songs like "Cave of Salvation" with utter disdain and misery. As mentioned, the album is available through Satanath records, check it out today.

Who knew something this brutal could come out of the metal circuit in Tripoli. This is the first full length album, NEWBORN SERPENT, from the band HATECROWNED.

I am going to dive straight into this one with out any messing around. I honestly felt that this band has a lot of potential. They clearly have the chops to make some great music and there is some of that on this album NEWBORN SERPENT. Sadly, this album is about as unoriginal as they come and some of the songs just sound like a muddy mess of thrashing guitars and blast beats. It is a shame really because I can get behind songs like, INFEST AND CONQUER and REDEFINING PURGATORY without question. They have the same charm and charisma that you would find in an IMMORTAL album and I loved these songs. The album however is held back by some fairly dull unoriginal tracks that could of been any other band in the genre.

The biggest problem this band has is the awful production sound. The fairly average songs is something I can handle, they would of came across a lot stronger with better production after all. The guitars are awfully muddy and actually get lost in the mix which does not help. It also seems to chop and change between certain songs as I didn’t find the sound to be a problem at all in the two songs I mentioned above.

Either way, NEWBORN SERPENT is a good enough album from a band who have a lot of personality. It is average in places and fantastic in others. I reckon this band could really pull out a fantastic album in a year or two. NEWBORN SERPENT is a good start if anything.

Black Metal…

Middle East is not well known by their metal scene, talking more specifically about Lebanon a country hit by various facts, as politics, religion, terrorism, wars, social segregation, poverty, immigration and more, however the metal scene made its roots there long time ago and although their scene is relatively young, we can rescue some names of bands like Blaakyum playing Thrash / Heavy Metal, Kimaera with a Doom / Death metal style, Symphonic metal band Ostura, Black metal band Ayat and recently Hatecrowned also in the Black metal vein, and this time I want to dedicate a space for this band.

Hatecrowned finds enough elements in the Old-school Black metal, rawness, ambiances and ruthless riff that match the crushing drums, the vocals explore a wide range of sounds going from shrieks, adding some howls and traditional death growls, the band was formed in 2011 by Ayvaal in vocals and Dahaaka in guitar and keyboards, during 2013 they released independently their EP titled "Warpact in Black" with four tracks, gaining international attention which lead them to ink a deal, with Russian record label Satanath Records, to release their album debut titled "Newborn Serpent" in last August 13, 2015 as a limited edition, with five hundred copies, the band accomplished their recording, with some guest musicians Benjamin "GoreDrummer" Lauritsen behind the drums and Eddy Ferekh as bassist.

Despite their rawness and heaviness they were able to craft in this album, there are some tracks that simply fall into a muddy pit, call it a flaw in the mixing or mastering or whatever, but in the other side there are plenty tracks to save this album as the opener cut "Ominous Birth of Serpent" there is a bass intro with middle east vibe and raspy vocals, semi fast pace it takes over with blasting drums, "Infest and Conquer" brings me some memories of the old Immortal more alike to the album Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism the riff are aggressive blends perfectly with a pummeling drums, "Void" the instrumental track precede "Redefining Purgatory" and "Newborn Serpent", both are intense, demolishing fast pace with death growls if you are looking for a feeling that approach to misanthropy and darkness here is an excellent dose for you, the short "Funeral Reverie" brings some depressive doom tones, with blistering drums to explore or expand their own path, "Wolves" will embrace you with an ambiance intro, howlings lost in a vast fog in the middle of the forest, blackened riff, pounding drums and vicious shrieks ends this album.

Hatecrowned delivers such level of maleficent dark ambiance without hint of salvation and I have to admit it, though I'm not very familiar with Lebanese metal scene, I felt somewhat attracted by curiosity but with great hopes, my boldness brought me a feeling of yore, even with the few flaws in this is album it worth your time to spend listening to them.

Stay True… Stay Metal… Stay Brutal...

I hadn’t listened metal material from Lebanon since heavy metal band Zix. This time is my first encounter with black metal scene from that country, and I’m really impressed.

These guys formed the band in 2011, in the north city of Tripoli, and released a debut EP in 2013. This is the first full length and it’s full of furious atmospheres forged in the rawest side of the genre. Of course, the band denotes people with high musical skills, but they know about extreme compositions and holocaustic structures. All tracks sound great and deliver poisonous doses of ritualistic and chaotic tunes, full of painful guitar riffs and perennial drum beats. Also, recording is direct to the bone, but clear enough to show a band with many hours behind rehearsal room. If you ask me, these guys have mature ideas musically speaking, and they’ve already forged an own sound, which is quite important in novel entities. I mean, especially in this genre. It’s a great album for those followers of underground bands from Middle East, and they should be supported by all of you lazy metal heads, as I’m sure the band fights a lot for promoting their own music. It’s a raw black metal band with a peculiar and distinctive point of view of misanthropy.

https://zombieritualzine.wordpress.com/2015/11/27/album-review-hatecrowned-newborn-serpent/

As much as I like power metal I like a really great extreme metal record. It doesn’t have to be the most technical efficient band. Just as long as they play with conviction. Like Italian Schizo or Bulldozer did in the 80s. I don’t know why but for some reason I get an old school feeling from this Lebanese band. The metal community keeps growing. This is black metal that is like a racing steam engine coming at you and you can’t escape it. Primitive and aggressive the way that I like it. No fancy pansy stuff at all. Just some really cool black metal.

http://battlehelm.com/reviews/hatecrowned-newborn-serpent/

It might not be that huge yet, the Middle Eastern scene, but believe me if I say that there are quite a lot of splendid Metal acts out there, despite religious suppression and narrow-minded bullshit. I can sum up quite an impressive list of great projects and bands from Iran, Saudi-Arab, Jordan or U.A.E., but I have to admit that I do not owe anything at all that comes from Lebanon. So, I’m like a virgin experiencing a Tripoli-based for the first time, but besides the bloody deflowering, it isn’t a painful experience at all; on the contrary, it pleases me, it satisfies me…

Hatecrowned hail from Tripoli, as mentioned before, and they independently released an EP at the end of 2013 (re-released on tape and the digital way in mean time). Now they come up with their first full length, which gets released in a collaboration in between Darzamadicus Records and Satanath Records (it is not for the first time that both labels join forces, by the way). Most of the material was recorded by main members Ayvaal and Dahaaka in Lebanon and, partially, in France, but the drums were recorded at the Art Of War Studio in Denmark by Benjamin ‘GoreDrummer’ Lauritsen, who took care of both mix and mastering too. Newborn Serpent clocks forty minutes and it comes with pretty nice artwork, actually. But let’s focus on the sonic side of the result…

Newborn Serpent stands for forty minutes of energetic, rhythmic, melodic and pounding Ultra-Dark Death / Black / Doom Metal with quite a funereal and melancholic approach. The stuff shows a rather obscured form of highly melodious and timeless, and why not, universal sonic extremity, but expressed through highly professional, creative (though not of the renewing kind) and crafted compositions. It starts with the great introduction, which did leave me confused (the positive way), but the impression of grandiose craftsmanship continues throughout the whole album. Often the so-called ‘Obscure Death / Black’ scene exhales grotesquery, pretention and fakeness, but in this band’s case the purity overwhelms me with warmth and coldness at the same time.

Besides, I think the interaction in between the different angles sounds so fluent, so natural, so evident. Sometimes the whole turns towards misanthropic blackened outbursts, then again towards quasi-grinding Morbid Death expression, occult Doom atmospheres or spine-chilling DSBM-alike structures – and everything in between. But above all, Hatecrowned maintain a cohesive execution, no matter if the outcome is fast or slow, integer or extravert, atmospheric or hateful, darkened or enlightening, melodious or chaotic in essence. It’s rather rare to have such differentiation and, at the same time, quite a coherent result, still with a very same-minded expression of occultism, timelessness and self-identity.

In conclusion I dare to add that Lebanon too, at least by means of this act, takes part of the great (re)vival of Middle Eastern splendor when talking about craftsmanship in both song writing and execution. Newborn Serpent is a fabulous recording that deserves attention; I do hope this review might be part of this band’s recognition!

It’s hard to even believe this quartet is from Lebanon, and from France, as their playing is so modern and just smashes the senses with its old school death and black metal viciousness.

“Newborn Serpent” is the type of record, which jumps out at the listener from the speakers and mauls like a Great White Shark, as their sound is feverishly twisted and lethal. The guitar rhythms feel like razor sharp machetes that just cut through flesh with such ease and precision, the listener does not even feel that they’ve been wounded.

The whole aura surrounding the ten tracks on this album, is very mysterious yet so mercilessly sinister in vibe. This is not the music you want to listen to at night, as it’s sure to invoke demons from an ancient slumber. Hatecrowned truly know the art of keeping their music so damn dark, you can easily feel it in every note they play due to the morbid climax their songs create upon our frail minds.

This quartet play with so much intensity and conviction, you’re sure to feel the fiery power their hellish songs create on this CD. Plenty of influences from Necrophobic, Belphegor and Setherial can be heard, but with Hatecrowned’s own touch within the music. Listen to the fourth track here: “Coronation Of The Eternal And Pure”, and you’ll be savagely beaten mentally and physically with its might and force, as this number just blows through you like a riff-laden tornado of utter destruction. The drumming alone here blows up like an atom bomb… This song also has some guitar influences from Morbid Angel’s “Altars Of Madness” album, which was pretty cool to hear.

The overall sound of the record is clean as far as the mix and production are concerned, not something that’ll blow you off of your seat, but everything can be heard here for the most part.

Moreover, they’ve an interesting sounding track in the form of “Void”, which has some special, eerie, darkened synth created sound effects of the world after the great apocalypse has destroyed it.

Not to sound too negative, but black and death metal would not be considered extreme metal if it was not negative. Give Hatecrowned a spin and feel all of their bloody hate boil to the brink of total annihilation. Satanath Records

At the time of writing this review, by conducting a search within metal-archives for Lebanese bands, a total of 41 entries are displayed. From these, 3 are listed as "active" black metal bands, with an additional band listed as an active black/death metal band. Hatecrowned is listed among the currently listed active black metal acts. Formed in 2011, Hatecrowned practices an aggressive form of black metal, and "Newborn Serpent" additionally displays some death metal elements during its 39:49 run time, distributed through 10 songs.

While considering how I would write this review, I took some time to get acquainted with fellow Lebanese acts, as I believe a work should be considered not only globally (given the worldwide expression of this particular art form), but it is also important to note its geographical and cultural soundscape as to better ascertain how a release can be as a spear through the shroud of what a particular "metal scene" is.

"Sinful and wretched tales, Made the history of Gods" is a quote taken from the sixth hymn "Redefining Purgatory", and I believe this quote particularly notes what I have ascertained so far, through my contact with Hatecrowned's art. There is clearly a well placed intention within the 10 songs of "Newborn Serpent", featuring Dahaaka (Fawzi Khoder-Agha) on guitars and Ayvaal (Ayman Alloush) handling the vocal duties, although by listening to the entirety of "Newborn Serpent", some questions are left unanswered as to some of the choices on the approach taken on the releases production and aesthetic choices.

"Newborn Serpent" denotes a very specific ambiance around it, the presented work has the ability to make its listener delve into a particular mindset with its soundscape, however the "fade-out" approach to which Hatecrowned has opted to end most songs along with the few seconds of silence between each transition, can be cumbersome to the listeners experience, I felt that it crippled my ability to appreciate "Newborn Serpent" for its qualities.

The first song, "Ominous Birth of Serpent" although being 01:26 in length, does have an official conceptual video that can be seen in the band's official youtube channel (link available in the appropriate section within metal-archives). Although this intro is reminiscent of something Melechesh could do in their earlier works, the following 3 songs, are more death metal oriented, the name of Swedish death/black metal act Soulreaper comes to mind as a reference while listening to these songs. The fifth song, "Void" is an instrumental piece that serves as a transition to a somewhat different musical approach, black metal roots are more evident in this second part of the release, and the death metal elements leave the foreground, being seldom used for the remaining songs of the album.

The songs presented are truly "Sinful and wretched tales", both in their aesthetic and message, the subject of the lyrics is evident, even from a glimpse of the artwork inked by the bands own vocalist Ayvaal. "Newborn Serpent" features 2 serpents displayed in the ouroboros motif, a symbol that can among other things, be representative of the "eternal return", or a cycle of re-creating oneself. Hatecrowned surely re-created itself by distancing themselves from many of the aspects that crippled their previous release, "Warpact in Black", and I expect the band will continue its ascending path, as self-recreation is part of the story of many Gods, so it has been for Hatecrowned.

There are some elements akin to Dissection's acoustic guitar passages, and although various bands have adapted these approaches during the years, many are unaware that this aesthetic is rooted in motifs such as baroque era dances, similar motifs can be heard Bach's BWV996 Bourrée in E-minor, a piece that surely served as inspiration to works such as "Feather's Fell". Instead of these acoustic passages akin to what has been done in the past, I would be curious to see Hatecrowned adapt some Lebanese specific elements to its expression, such as adopting the use of Buzuqs (variants are also present in other cultures, such as the Greek or the distant Irish bouzoukis) or Mijwizs in these approaches, as it would greatly add to the possibility of attaining a more unique sound, instead of attempting to cope with a standard pre-determined sound other bands have used in the past.

It should be noted that both the bass and drums in the album where handled by guest musicians, Eddy Ferekh and GoreDrummer (Benjamin Lauritsen) respectively.

All in all, "Newborn Serpent" is a worthwhile listen, especially to anyone wishing to get acquainted to extreme music performed outside of the usually expected sources, although it will be clear to the listener that although there are some really honest intentions, there is still work to be done in honing the expression of what the project wishes to express.

Darzamadicus Records.

„Kolejny rok, a Liban płonie…”

Dźwięki, jakie słyszymy to surowy black metal nawiązujący do dokonań drugiej fali z lat 90. Dominują średnie i szybkie tempa. W muzyce panuje minimalizm w postaci przesterowanych gitar, ukrytych w tle klawiszy. Wypluwające teksty poruszające tematy nienawiści, śmierci, lucyferianizmu wokale, oscylują pomiędzy typowym blackowym screamem a growlem.

Sometimes hopeful careers are ended before they even begun. Well, I'm not sure if the career of HATECROWNED might have been great. But judging from their first (and only) album “Newborn Serpent”, the duo from Tripoli, Lebanon, is a loss for the Black Metal scene. It's not that the band re-invented or revolutionized the genre with this album. But the album has a refreshing old school sound that summons the spirit of the mid of the 1990s, when Black Metal made the first progress. The primitive and evil music of the churchburners took a more mature direction back then and other influences than so called “True Black Metal” became more and more accepted. Especially some melodies, both fragmentary and distinctive, added a new and great note to the old sound. And this era of Black Metal is very well depicted on “Newborn Serpent”. Somehow I feel reminded of the underrated and pretty overlooked THE ABYSS, particularly their first album “The Other Side”. HATECROWNED had a similar feeling how to integrate some melodies into a harsh Black Metal song. The jangling vocals are another thing both bands had in common. But HATECROWNED sounded unique enough to find their own niche in the Black Metal scene. There are so many nice ideas and exciting turns in the songs that make “Newborn Serpent” one of the best albums of the genre I listened to in the past months. So, even though the band split up recently, give their album a chance.
