Mexico is not the kind of place you expect frozen, raw black metal to come from. Black metal yes, as it is a country that has suffered from debilitating drug wars and all sorts of calamity since Westerners landed there in the 1500s. It can be a hotbed for that raging, seething cauldron of extremity that black metal can be. But proper, Norwegian style black metal? Hmmm….
The wind, the raven, the howling of wolves and the eerie, ritualistic hum that resonants from the intro to this record sets the tone perfectly. It’s perhaps a little bit long, but the caustic Venom worship that follows in ‘Spiritual War’ is worth the wait. The slower paced ‘Lord of the Night’ has a doomy crawl to it, while the Darkthrone worshipping ‘Dream in the Eternal Forest’ is caustic blackened beauty. The band mix it up, with the malevolent chug of ‘Black Bird’, and the icy ‘Moonlight’.
Vocally the shrieks and growls are shrouded within the music, peeking through every so often but remaining mysterious. It works quite well, giving Black Lord a kind of raw, mystic quality. Maybe in future releases we could see them pushed forward and see what the band can do. When they are more prominent, like in the awesome ‘Coldblood’, the manic howling works really well.
‘Black Forest Ritual’ has convinced me that black metal is a truly global phenomenon. Black Lord have nailed the sound perfectly, and while they are more followers than leaders, ‘Black Forest Ritual’ is a example of solid black magic from a band I look forward to seeing more from.

This is the début album from Black Lord, a Mexican Black Metal band.
After a rather pointless intro that goes on for far too long, we finally get to the meat of the matter as the first song erupts into life. Black Lord play underground, raw Black Metal that’s unfettered from any form of niceness.
The Blackened riffs have a Thrash influence on occasion. As well as using some dark melodies to enhance the songs, they have a loose, primitive style that nonetheless manages to gather the quintessential Black Metal darkness to it like a magnet.
The singer sounds like he’s howling into the abyss, almost independently of the music. Unhinged and maniacal, his performance is unforced and probably quite something to see in the flesh. Screams, growls, moans and chants emanate from the songs while the music charges forward with wild abandon and grim determination.
Black Ritual Forest is an expression of Blackened intent, with the band showing their passion for the style across 36 minutes.

There's been a lot of discussion about intros on metal albums throughout the years. Some people think they're obsolete and useless, others adore these 'ouvertures', seeing them as a gateway to the musical insanity they are about to listen to. Personally, I like them but intro's are not a necessity. It all depends really. Sometimes they can break an album by becoming a ridiculous parody of the genre but on other occasions they're brilliant. Anyway, this album I'm about to review has a great intro, dark ambient with howling wolves, who doesn't love that?
What follows is also pretty interesting. This Mexican duo roams in the regions of occult, punk and thrash induced black metal, focusing on strong riffs and well varied drums. Haunting blackened screams provide that typical eerie atmosphere. So in a way, we're listening to quite typical black metal, resulting in decent songs like 'Spiritual War' or 'Dreaming Into The Eternal Forest'. I admit, at times it sounds a little chaotic but that only adds to the mystique I guess.
However, there are some fascinating elements in this music. For starters, 'Black Bird' is an amazing song, mainly quite slow but nonetheless intense. It drives on elementary but almost hypnotic riffs and energetic percussion. It shows a bit of the depressive black metal wave that seems to have influenced Black Lord. 'Moonlight' even goes a bit further in that area. Besides, I love the bizarre solos in some of these songs and I think the outro is epic.
In all, 'Black Ritual Forest' is an excellent debut from this Mexican duo. When I was checking them out I noticed that another album is coming up and I'm quite curious about that. This music is a mix of typical and non-typical black metal but in no way comes near the recent post-black wave. That alone could be an interesting element and influence to a new wave of the genre.

Black Lord are a band from Mexico that plays a very raw form of black metal and this is a review of their 2015 album "Black Ritual Forest" which was released as a joint effort between Satanath Records, Tribulacion Productions and Rebellious Records.
Nature sounds start off the album along with some ritualistic sounding ambient synths and after the intro the music goes into a musicla direction that takes the guitar riffng of first wave black metal and mixes it in with second wave style high pitched screams while the solos and leads also remain true to a very old school tradition.
When the music speeds up it brings in more of a raw style of black metal along with some blast beats and spoken word parts along with melodies can also be heard at times and after awhile death metal growls can be heard in certain sections of the recording and the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and as the album progresses some depressive black metal elements are added into some of the slower riffs while some of the faster and mid tempo parts add in a touch of thrash and they close the album with a synth outro that evokes the atmosphere of a black and white horror movie soundtrack while also still having guitars.
Black Lord plays a musical style that takes the raw style of second wave black metal and mixes it with the more thrash orientated side of the first wave to create a style of their own, the production sounds very raw and old school while the lyrics cover nature, destruction and chaos themes.
In my opinion Black Lord are a very great sounding raw black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Spiritual War' "Dreaming Into the Eternal Forest" and "Spell Of Darkness".

There is no force rawer than Mother Nature. From the harshness of winter to the massive force that the wind carries with it to the vast and endless views that is earth, she watches over us all. So it is no wonder that we see a lot of nature in black metal. If you can’t survive on your own nature will unmercifully swallow you and spit you out again. This Mexican lot has a sound that owes a lot to the Norwegian black metal of the 90s. The one that is very harsh and cold, the one that is basic and back to the roots. There is something about this that appeals to me. I like the cold, harsh sound that they have going for themselves.

Black Lord are a Mexican project by a guy called Black Lord, who takes care of all instruments, with exception of the drum parts, which get performed by nobody else but Astarot, the guy behind great outfits such as Abysmal Depths, Astarot or Alasthor (several releases by these projects, especially done via Satanath Records, have been published on this site, so do not hesitate to read the reviews). The Black Ritual Forest album is their first recording, lasting for thirty six minutes, and released in an edition of 300 copies only (most of the time, Satanath Records offer the audience 500 copies, but not this time – don’t ask me why, but believe me is I say you need to hurry to get your own copy; I’ve got mine, so there’s one less left for you…). The digital edition, by the way, is available too (initially independently uploaded a couple of months before the CD-edition, in case it might interest you).
Anyway, the material has been recorded and mixed at the end of 2014 at Astarot’s home studio, and the artwork (including the logo) was done by Mister Black Lord himself. And based on the drawings, I sort of have a certain Nordic flair coming to mind, so let’s see and hear…
Black Ritual Forest opens with an untitled intro, quite lengthy, and quite interesting. It’s a magic and majestic but also ominous and suffocative symphony with an almost sacral atmosphere, including samples (howling wolves, crying crows and more creatures of the night). Yet as from Spiritual War, the whole attitude turns nastier, grimmer, more evil and uncompromising. Black Lord’s approach is of the primal kind, turning back to the roots, and then I am talking about both the Second as well as the First Wave. That track I just mentioned, for example, Spiritual War, sounds like a hybrid of early Bathory at the one hand, and Gorgoroth or Carpathian Forest, if you want to, at the other. It’s based on the primitivism of the old styled trend(s), paying tribute to the origins. And it’s within this trend that Black Ritual Forest goes on, being structurally based on elements from the Scandinavian Glory especially.
The main speed is mid-tempo oriented, with both slow and fast passages. Yet in any case, no matter if the material blasts or dooms, it maintains that grim, evil atmosphere.
The production too fits perfectly to the specific style, for being raw, unpolished and edgy. The sound of the guitars, for example, is of the chainsaw-kind, while the few solos totally remind me to those of the first Bathory albums, being both delicate and thin (which must not be taken as negative right here, on the contrary!). Yet I have to admit that the drum patterns sound way too mechanical from time to time (sometimes I do wonder if it’s a drum computer that’s used on this album) – but I think that might be the sole negative remark I have to give…
Finally, the outro intelligently entitled Outro: like the intro quite asphyxiating and ominous, also based on synths and wolves / crows, yet with a quite fine guitar riff towards the end… Splendid thing to end this album with…

Dal Messico arriva questo duo composto da Black Lord (all instruments) e Astarot (drums), anche se il monicker fa pensare ad una one man band "allargata" ad un altro componente, il batterista. Quello proposto in "Black Ritual Forest" è un black metal vecchia scuola, che sembra essere uscito dalle innevate terre della Scandinavia, piuttosto che da quelle assolate del Messico. Ad ogni modo dischi come questo ci riportano di almeno venti anni indietro, a partire dal cover artwork in bianco e nero, al packaging scarno con sole 4 facciate di booklet, alla carta ruvida e al face painting dei due componenti coinvolti.
Ovviamente in tutto questo ciò che è black metal fino al midollo è la musica, che nei suoi 37 minuti circa di durata non si discosta un minimo dal metallo nero tout-court, se non per una leggera propensione per ritmiche di chitarra vicine al thrash vecchio stile più grezzo e istintivo. Ma questo aspetto non è sempre presente, in quanto possiamo trovarlo ad esempio in un pezzo come "Dreaming into the Eternal Forest" o, soprattutto su "Sometimes Sacred", ma in generale non è un elemento così marcato, sebbene importante nell'economia del sound di questa band. A volte la formazione pare esplorare il lato più evocativo e riflessivo del black come in "Moonlight", che si mantiene lenta per quasi tutta la sua durata.
Quindi in generale possiamo parlare di un discreto lavoro, non di certo un capolavoro, ma un buon compendio di sonorità già conosciute, dove "originalità" è praticamente un termine sconosciuto.
Non so se l'adesione incrollabile ad uno stile e una attitudine possono bastare per rendere un lavoro come questo "Black Ritual Forest" sufficientemente interessante, ma ogni tanto la band piazza qualche colpo ben riuscito, come la valida "Coldblod", che ricorda certe cose dei Carpathian Forest e si rivela come episodio che, insieme ad altri 2 o 3 alza le quotazioni di questo album.
Concludendo: questo lavoro non stupisce e forse non vuole farlo, ma chi ama il black metal degli anni Novanta mescolato ad un po' di black-thrash anni Ottanta potrebbe trovarlo apprezzabile.
Chi invece cerca personalità e innovazione guardi decisamente altrove.

Black Lord existieren bereits seit 2010, haben allerdings erst 5 Jahre nach Bandgründung mit “Black Ritual Forest” ihr erstes Machwerk fertiggestellt und veröffentlicht.
Zu Beginn bestimmen gut viereinhalb Minuten rituellen Ambients mit Rabenschreien und Wolfsheulen um den Hörer auf die bevorstehende Messe vorzubereiten. Was danach einsetzt hat mich dann doch etwas überrascht, denn wer hier mit tiefem Untergrund-Black Metal rechnet….gut, der hat Recht was den Sound angeht, denn der ist wahrlich recht rau geraten. Die Musik an sich klingt aber eher nach stark angeschwärztem Thrash Metal, der sich mit eindeutigeren Black Metal-Parts abwechselt. Zu dieser Mischung gesellen sich die Vocals, die man in der Form eher auf einem DSBM-Werk als auf einem Black/Thrash Metal-Album vermutet hätte. Spitze Schreie mit Hall unterlegt dominieren, gelegentlich gibt es auch einige Growls auf die Ohren. Nach dem ersten Song bleiben zwar die Vocals weiterhin hoch, dafür wird der Sound schwarzmetallischer, behält aber immer einen thrashigen Nachgeschmack im Riffing bei, der den Songs und der Band einen gewissen Wiedererkennungswert verleiht.
Black Lord haben mich mit ihrem Debüt vom, wenn man das Intro mitzählt, zweiten Song an überrascht und bieten auf “Black Ritual Forest” genau das, was der Titel verspricht: Ein rohes, düsteres Black(/Thrash)-Ritual, von mir aus auch im Wald, aber dafür waren meine Kopfhörerkabel dann doch zu kurz…

Black Lord from Mexico play old school, primitive, raw black metal that’s sure to make your ears melt off in total, soul raping agony.
The guitars come at you with stealth speeds and go in for the attack, which is you, and then you’re bound to suffer from the ungodly musical and vocal forms present on “Black Ritual Forest”. This is the worst form of sound assault you can possibly endure, as it’s sure to decimate your physical form. The suffocated vocals sound like they’re strained and gasping for air, as they soak your ears in complete blackened misery. The drumming is pure, unadulterated and raw, to the point of fucking beating your weakened corpse into the ground like a wooden stake.
Songs like “Spiritual War”, “Lord Of The Night”, “Dreaming Into The Eternal Forest” and “Spell Of Darkness” unleash tornado-like rhythms, immaculately crafted vocal spells along with a brutal wall of sound that absolutely crushes all humanly senses.
Plenty of great sounds from bands such as Darkthrone, Celtic Frost and ABSU come to mind. The old school black metal feeling, which is disseminated on “Black Ritual Forest”, is outlandishly eerie and evil in sound.
With the black and white album artwork showing a cold, misty and darkened forest, you know that Black Lord is mysterious in many ways, but realistically fucking brutal and morbid enough to make your eyes bleed until they fall out. Black Lord’s music is viciously caustic and is sure to cause the listener, 3rd degree burns and inflict immeasurable pain upon their frail state of being. This is one band you’re bound to suffer to while their sadistic black metal tortures the living hell out of you. Satanath Records
Quest'oggi introduco il duo black metal dei Black Lord, ponendovi un quesito: siete talmente appassionati del genere, soprattutto del filone che si rifà al periodo fra la fine degli anni Ottanta e l'inizio degli anni Novanta, da accollarvi qualsiasi uscita abbia quel suono e si alimenti unicamente dei cliché stilistici partoriti allora? Se la risposta fosse sì, proseguite nella lettura, perché Black Lord e il batterista Astarot potrebbero anche piacervi.
"Black Ritual Forest" è un disco che puzza letteralmente di vecchio, sin dalla traccia "Intro", in cui una voce epica pare ergersi all'interno di una foresta notturna colma di rumori e versi di animale che la mantengono viva. Ci si imbatte così in una proposta che aderisce completamente a quanto già ampiamente sviscerato nelle produzioni dei bei tempi rilasciate in quella fredda Scandinavia. Nell'affrontare la scaletta ogni singolo secondo sembra sia già stato rivoltato migliaia e miglia di volte, con risultati sia peggiori che migliori, eppure non me la sento — e del resto non posso — di condannare la scelta di attenersi a regole prestabilite per dar forma a un album dignitosamente sufficiente, che di certo non esalta ma possiede alcuni brani ben fatti quali "Spiritual War", "Black Bird", il più atmosferico e ritmicamente diluito "Moonlight", "Sometimes Sacred" (dall'animo thrash) e "Cold Blood".
Come detto a inizio testo, "Black Ritual Forest" si rivolge senza dubbio a una precisa categoria di ascoltatori. Nel caso in cui non ne faceste parte, la mossa più semplice da mettere in atto sarebbe quella di saltarlo a piè pari.

Ein Intro über vier Minuten ist schon anstrengend, und dann noch bestehend aus tiefen Synthieklängen wie Mönchsgesänge beansprucht die Geduld doch schon mehr als gewollt. Daran ändern Samples von Tiergeräuschen wie Raben und Wölfe dann auch nicht mehr viel. Die Black Metal Gewalt von "Spiritual War" kommt danach wie eine Erlösung, ein Song, der nebenbei bemerkt gut eine Minute kürzer ist. "Moonlight" nimmt etwas das Tempo raus, bleibt aber absolut interessant. Zu "Sometimes Sacred" und "Spell Of Darkness" zeigen sie Metalaffinität und legen rifftechnisch thrashig los. Ihre Palette ist breit, bleibt aber oldschool Black der stärkeren Sorte. Das Duo setzt sich zusammen aus dem Allinstrumentalisten Black Lord und Drummer Astarot. Die Protagonisten kommen zwar aus Mexico, bringen aber die beißende Kälte des Undergrounds mit. Geil auch das dunkle Artwork auf schwarz-weißer Basis aus dickem Karton.

Из жаркой Мексики вдруг повеяло морозным дыханием нордического Black Metal… Да-да, я знаю, что такую ересь пишут только петросяны с одной извилиной, не ругайтесь. Нормальным людям давно известно, что латиноамериканцы знают толк в олдскульном метале, в том числе чёрном. И порой их творения, выкованные в кузнях под какой-нибудь Пуэблой, обжигают дьявольским холодом сильнее, чем псевдоблэковые потуги современной норвежской музыкальной братии. К BLACK LORD, впрочем, это всё относится постольку-поскольку. Формация была основана в 2010-ом году неким персонажем, носящим этот псевдоним, а на ударные он пригласил парня по прозвищу Астарот. Судя по всему, это тот самый Астарот, что также имеет одноименный проект, тоже подписанный на Satanath Records. Жанровую принадлежность BLACK LORD долго угадывать не нужно, как вы сами понимаете. У нас тут Black Metal, очень старомодный, а это всегда хорошо. Причём не какая-то клоунская поделка, где всё огульно заросло Лесом и затянулось Тьмой, и морды намазаны гуталином, а деструктивной составляющей и не пахло. Нет, ребята сочинили несколько гимнов Ему, не забыв упомянуть все нужные детали. Иное дело, что уровень лирической составляющей по оригинальности примерно такой же, как и название альбома — насколько мне удалось разобрать. Но тут уж извините, не всем ведь быть адептами сатанинских культов с высокими степенями. Каждый славит Рогатого Князя как умеет.
Музыкально BLACK LORD топчутся где-то рядом со старыми DARKTHRONE и их вдохновителями HELLHAMMER. Слышны также элементы древнего сатанинского трэша, что-то от козлиной эпохи BATHORY. В общем, категорический олдскул. Вы только не спешите радоваться — это не означает, что тут всё хоть наполовину так же круто, как у BATHORY или HELLHAMMER. Я, скорее, имею в виду полнейший примитивизм музыкальных конструкций и стремление к зловещей ауре. В этом BLACK LORD преуспели. Интересных идей у них ни на грош, удачных риффов раз-два и обчёлся, но всё выполнено на достаточно сносном уровне, чтобы слушать альбом, получая от этого определённое удовольствие. Единственное, что у группы получается из рук вон плохо — это скоростные фрагменты. Поэтому, к примеру, состоящая из бластбитов и быстрых тремоло песня с поэтичным названием «Dreaming in the eternal forest» вся кривая и косая, а хэллхамероподобная среднетемповая «Spiritual War» — отличная. Молодым музыкантам любых метал-групп нужно понимать, что не надо делать молотилку, пока вы не научились выстраивать нормальный звук. У BLACK LORD неплохо настроена гитара, хорошо продуман вокал, барабаны вроде живые (по крайней мере, частично). Однако на всём этом лежит печать нещадной цифровой обработки, совершенно не нужной такому альбому. На быстрых вещах резко вылезают сухой скрежет, цоканье и лязг, уничтожающие всю атмосферу. Группа поступила бы гораздо правильнее, запиши она «Black Ritual Forest» по-старинке, вживую на 4-дорожечный магнитофон. Да, вышло бы ещё грязнее, а местами вообще неслушабельно, но кому это мешает? Чутьё того, каким должен быть старообрядческий Black Metal-альбом, у BLACK LORD присутствует. Посмотрите на эти реально великолепные чёрно-серые рисунки в буклетике, вслушайтесь в их риффы. Эстетика соблюдена — это действительно прилежное следование Культу. Но след фрути залупс очень сильно бьёт по атмосфере. Если бы в своём стремлении делать по-старому BLACK LORD пошли до конца, оценка точно была бы на балл выше. Буду надеяться, что это издержки дебюта, и в дальнейшем мексиканский дуэт захочет и сумеет приложить больше усилий к выстраиванию правильного звучания. Рекомендую «Black Ritual Forest» тем, кто соскучился по архаичному Black Metal с завыванием волков, карканьем ворон и гнилым ковром из листьев под ногами.
Мексиканский сырой блак — это то, чего вы ждали, особенно в сабжевом исполнении и реализации. В прессухе Satanath Records указано, что эту группу с 10-го года организовал один местный камрад с одноименным никнеймом, который был дико восхищен буржумовскими творениями.
Некоторое время он играл в местной команде, а потом решил взяться за гуж самостоятельно. И знаете ли, взялся основательно. Для того он еще пригласил одного соратника — спеца по драмсам. Казалось бы, на… зачем тебе спец, набей сам в драм-программе и смейся всем в лицо. Но камрад Блак Лорд не таков. Живой ударник ему важнее компьютерного чудо-барабанщинка. Радует такой подход. И прослушав уже около половины диска я понял, что хозяин проекта был совершенно прав. В роу блаке живой ударник — можно сказать, полдела.
И ведь придется начать как раз с ударника Астарота, ибо это он сочинил интро, тягучую как сосновая смола компо, немного одномерную вначале, но потом разворачивающуюся на манер конуса, украшенную криком безумного воронья, еще какими-то мрачными звучками. Клавиши здесь были использованы нисколько не мажорно, а совершенно наоборот, в самом трагическом и удушающем наполнении. Некоторые люди целые альбомы в таком стиле издают. Здесь это было исполнено для создания соответствующего настроения и своеобразной ступеньки в АД.
Этот HELL очень труен, как с самого начала, так и в продолжение, не говоря уж про окончание этого демонического артефакта. Радует гитарное начало — резкое, компактное в риффе, (для того, чтобы умещаться в сердце каждого блакера, какое бы оно неразмерным не было бы). Гитарная работа напоминает упражнения ксерокса циклопических размеров, постоянно занятого вышвыриванием в этот мир черных листков с партитурами апокалипсиса.
Композер смело меняет темпы, варьирует давление, которое оказывается на слушателя, перестраивает гитару и воздвигает, и обрушивает здания струнного звука, будто бы никем не заполненные и пустые, малоэмоциональные и тракторно-разговорчивые. Но стоит только в игру ввязаться драмсам — очередью из зенитного орудия, как оказывается, что из пробоин рвется наружу черное настроение и темное мышление, массивно закатанное в стены этих сооружений. Гитарист оказывается за каждым движением медиатора имел в виду работу пресса, который туго скатывает и трамбует идеи бесчеловечности, безумный страх, отторжение от социума.
Как антивокалист Блак Лорд абсолютно в теме. Его скриминговый харш пронзает траки как технический лазер, пронося в отверстия стальные проволоки смысла своей лирики, формирует идейное наполнение компакта, творчески создавая атмосферу опустошения и дестракта.
Трак 6, например, практически принадлежит стилистически дум-блаку, особенно вначале, и голос Блак Лорда здесь изумительно меняется в сторону змеиного очарования, а потом пронзительного крика ярости и ненависти. Беспокоиться не надо, уже в следующей главе этой звуковой преисподней вполне явственно вырастают побеги мистического свойства, поднимающиеся до оккультных шаманских практик. Можно понять, инфернальный ресурс использован на все сто процентов.
Как бы то ни было, самый настоящий реальный диск тру роу блака по своему звучанию — это просто блистающий кусок чернейшего угля. Почему-то считается, что роу блак должен звучать как мпз, кодированный с того же компакта )). Недавно был о том разговор, и вот как раз сабжевый диск, как иллюстрация к теме. Грубейшая ошибка — полагать, что качество звучания RAW Black где-то исчезает на серебристых дорожках. У него свое темнейшее очарование в саунде реального диска, которое производит соответственное впечатление. Посмотрел спектроанализатор, и понял, что автор (и студия звукозаписи) как раз вовсе не ограничивал себя ни по низам, ни по верхам, ибо высшие частоты на диске встречаются и поболее 20 килогерц (которые человеческое ухо не воспринимает. Но тут именно как в том анекдоте: «ложечки нашлись, а ВПЕЧАТЛЕНИЕ осталось»). Воздействие такого звука в хорошем качестве, да к тому же на доброй аппаратуре, на нормальной громкости сродни воздействию отточенной пилы…

Mexico breeds filthy, putrid Black Metal that gets caught between your teeth and worms its way down your throat eventually. You can always expect a madness, an atmosphere, and a love for Metal. BLACK LORD starts off with a bang after the Intro with 'Spiritual War', setting the tempo for the rest of the album. The throbbing rhythms chug along with a triumphant kick in the crotch. 'Lord Of The Night' gurgles and spits its way through a muddy, murky bath of acid. 'Black Bird' snaps your neck as it wraps its gelatinous coils around you. The galloping 'Dreaming In The Eternal Force' inspires pure chaos and mind-numbing destruction. 'Moonlight' slows it down a little for about a minute and a half until it too kicks into gear. 'Sometimes Sacred' lurches forward at the speed of a thousand raging spirits. By now, you get the idea. If you like your Black Metal loud, filthy and chaotic, BLACK LORD is probably for you. Their debut album "Black Ritual Forest" looks to be a promising start to a hopefully long career in melting our eardrums till they bleed. I raise my horns in the air to salute you, BLACK LORD.
