I have always loved the mystery surrounding black metal. Many acts conceal themselves into obscurity, using pseudonyms, wearing corpse-paint and seemingly coming out of nowhere to deliver smashing albums and performances before once again disappearing into the night. Solus, for example, is a one-man project, moving in the region of depressive black metal. The sole member goes by the name 'D.' and hails from Nagyatád, a town in Somogy county, Hungary. He has been active in the Hungarian underground for several years now and already recorded several demos, e.p.'s and splits.

This untitled album is the first one I've ever heard from Solus but it's right up my blackened alley. It's been a while since I've heard this kind of atmospheric black metal but it never ceases to amaze me. The combination of dreamy keyboards, bleak guitars and haunted vocals have been a favorite for decades, even since I Vinterriket for the first time. Opener 'Visszatérés' is a brilliant anthem, perfectly combining all these elements but leaving out the fierce blast beats.

'Világok Közt Vándorló' finally brings out these intense drums, immediately showing the variation and craftsmanship put into this album. 'Elfeledett Utak' once again takes on the slower approach and suddenly I'm reminded of some post-rock anthems. However, in a way it seems like post-rock borrowed these elaborate instrumental passages from atmospheric black metal bands because I heard stuff like this way before post-rock was even invented. Anyway, on this album these passages are simply great.

The album continues in a highly varied fashion. 'Az Örök Körforgás' returns the speed and intensity of old school black metal for a little while, before driving on an immersive mid-tempo paste. 'Path Of Wisdom' jumps on the same wagon and is another great song. At this time I find myself, nodding along with this sluggish, almost hypnotic tempo and trying to find out what D. is screaming about. That is no easy task, considering the haunted, screaming sound of the vocals, especially not in a language I don't speak.

To make the song-by-song feel of this review complete, I can only add that closer 'Lebegés' is another possible favorites-candidate, but this time consisting of strange soundscapes and a downright bleak atmosphere in perfect dark ambient fashion. So if you're into bands like Nortt, Summoning, Paysage d'Hiver or Burzum, this comes highly recommended. In all, 'Solus' is an excellent album with five great songs and one colossal anthem which might be one of my favorite black metal songs of all time ('Visszatérés').

Solus - Solus (Dark East Prod./Satanath Rec./Metal Throne Prod. 2015). Seit 2006 ist das Soloprojekt eines gewissen Herrn namens D mit seiner eigenen Interpretation von Black Metal unterwegs. Und es ist irgendwie erstaunlich, dass er mit SOLUS bisher nicht bekannter geworden ist. Immerhin gibt es eine ganze Menge Demo`s und diversen Splitveröffentlichungen. Und jetzt gibt es die erste Langreise mit dem gleichen Namen.

„Solus“ ist nämlich eine ganz vorzügliche Ambient Black Metal Scheibe geworden, die ein klein wenig zwischen den Stühlen sitzt. Musikalisch atmet man mit jedem Ton kranken und bizarrer Black Metal ein, gehüllt ist das Ganze aber in einen durchaus wuchtigen, wenn auch nicht zu sterilen Sound, der auch Anhängern aktueller Tonkunst nicht direkt vor den Kopf stößt. Getragen wird das Ganze mit schweren und gewaltigen Keyboard-Klängen. Fast durchgehend schippert SOLUS in schneller Raserei, über mittelschnellen Blast`s bis hin zu monumentalen Doom-Passagen. Bei SOLUS gibt es viel Atmosphäre, welche sind im ständigen Wechsel zwischen Barbarei und Harmonie bewegt. Dabei werden keine Gefangene gemacht, die Kompositionen variieren in bereits besprochenen Motiven in einer bislang beispiellosen Dichte und mit einem erdrückenden Willen zur Stärke. Kurzfristige Tempo-Verschleppungen oder Andeutungen von Verschnaufpausen werden nur eingelegt, um anschließend noch aggressiver zu Werke zu gehen. Jedes Mal, wenn sich so etwas wie ein Entspannungseffekt aufbaut, legt die Band dann eben doch noch mal eine Schippe drauf. Die Kompositionen sind nach wie vor keineswegs komplex, jedoch beeindruckend konsequent arrangiert und sehr detailliert dargestellt. Der krächzende Gesang von D ist sehr dominant sowie bösartig und wird voller Verachtung geradling herausgespukt.

FAZIT: "Solus" ist ein starkes Album, mit dem SOLUS ein fettes Ausrufezeichen setzen. Man darf gespannt sein, zu was die Band noch in der Lage ist. Anhänger von rauem, aber strukturiertem Ambient-Black-Metal können bei dieser Scheibe bedenkenlos zuschlagen und müssen dabei kein schlechtes Gewissen haben, ihren Old School Ursprungspfad verlassen zu müssen.

Solus are a solo project from Hungary that plays an ambient form of black metal and this is a review of his self titled 2015 album which was released as a joint effort between Satanath Productions, Dark East Productions and Metal Throne Productions.

A very dark, atmospheric and ambient black metal sound starts off the album along with both the guitars and synths being very dominant and most of the tracks are very long and epic in length and the vocals are done in mostly high pitched screams and all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them.

You can hear a great amount of modern atmospheric black metal elements in the bands musical style and the screams also get depressive and grim at times and as the album progresses the music starts to speed up at times and brings in blast beats and a more raw style of the genre and the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and when solos and leads are utilized they bring more melodies onto the recording and one track also brings in a brief use of clean playing and the album closes with an ambient instrumental.

Solus plays a style of black metal on this recording that is very raw and atmospheric and also mixes in a great amount of ambient elements to create a very emotional approach to the genre, the production sounds very raw yet heavy at the same time while the lyrics are written in a mixture of Hungarian and English and cover nature, philosophy and death themes.

In my opinion Solus are a very great sounding ambient black metal project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Visszateres" and "Path Of Wisdom".

It seems that Hungarians know how to make their black metal as I have just had a mesmerising euphoric experience with the new album from SOLUS. Since this website has started up again, I have went through so many black metal albums and I’d like to think I know a good one when I hear one. Personally speaking, I think this one right here is worthy of your attention.

SOLUS is a bleak fifty five minutes of dark atmospheric black metal that should make the souls of the weak crumble and the sick and twisted smirk with joy as the sounds of the suffering blare out the stereo in force. There is something particularly mesmerising about SOLUS that I can not put my finger on. In terms of originality, it is not anything new as I have heard this kind of thing plenty of times before but it is not worth criticising due to the fact that either way, this is a bloody good album.

The sound is adequately rough and it compliments the miserable mood of the music perfectly. The songs themselves range from slow, mid paced to frantic thrashing. There is a little bit of everything and it really is perfectly evened out as far as variety is concerned. It is very well paced and only slightly drags on by the end, and I do mean slightly. But I think the biggest strength of the album is that dark brooding mystique that surrounds the whole product. Whether it is the beautiful art work or that dream like rhythm portrayed in the music, I can not help but love this record.

SOLUS is an example of why black metal keeps attracting my attention. What I have listened to is nothing new or amazing but it still hits me in the right spot and I loved every second of it. Sure the lack of originality is a downer but the creativity in the music is evident and no one should take anything away from the song writer “D” for it. This is a record that is worth hunting down, if it makes you feel better you can purchase the album via BANDCAMP. We have recently witnessed an increase of metal made in Hungary, signaling an environment more and more diverse and aware of what is happening in the metal world. Solus is, as it frequently happens in the black metal underground, a one-man band founded by multi-instrumentalist D (also known for its work in as part of Earth Plague). The project was founded in 2006 and has released a series of demos and splits since (moving to Germany in the meantime); finally we can hear his eponymous full-length debut, printed in a few hundred copies in cooperation by Satanath Records, Dark East Productions, and Metal Throne Productions.

The cover artwork is really effective (designed by the young Hungarian artist Bettina Fias), featuring a black trunk on golden background, its branches and roots twirling together in a circular and interdependent representation of existence. Six tracks really different from one another, both in terms of structure and atmosphere, where D explores various faces of contemporary black metal: from the more atmospheric interpretations heard in "Visszatérés" to the raw aggressiveness of "Világok Közt Vándorló" and "Az Örök Körforgás", up to the solemn pace of "Path Of Wisdom" (the only English-titled song, that could have probably been made a tad shorter) or the quasi-cosmic approach of "Lebegés".

I am hardly a Hungarian language expert, but even from the titles alone we can grasp the naturalistic character and the concept of universe's eternal cycle conveyed by the cover image. The "wanderer between worlds" ("Világok Közt Vándorló") moving through conceptual and musical territories so diverse, on "forgotten paths" ("Elfeledett Utak") and the "Path Of Wisdom", concluding their journey floating or levitating ("Lebegés") towards a new plane of knowledge and symbiosis with the world.

All in all, the record's running time doesn't feel excessively long given the frequent changes of pace, and the evil production, also buzzing when needed, contributes to the successful overall effect. A good debut album that shows a lot, and a great way of getting closer to Hungarian metal, it is quite likely that we will soon analyze other works released by D under the Solus monicker.

Ungheria, terra dove il caldo torrido penso si conosca ben poco, e dove il freddo comanda. Ed è proprio questo che trasmette il primo, vero e proprio full-length per la one-man band Solus capitanata da tale D. Un freddo che entra dentro e non molla più, con un senso di malinconia e desolazione che ammanta l'anima.
In realtà non si inventa nulla di nuovo in questo album, in quanto questo genere di musica e di approccio è molto simile a quello del miglior Burzum, quello di dischi come "Hvis Lyset Tar Oss" e "Filosofem".

I pezzi sono sei in tutto e dalla durata media elevata, con riff ripetuti e dilatati, e inserti di tastiere non preponderanti ma che fungono molto bene nell'intento di creare un'opera atmosferica, dove l' ambient si unisce alla base depressive black metal dei Solus. Anche la voce si esprime su tonalità vicine a quelle di Vikernes, sebbene risultino meno gracchianti e leggermente più profonde. La prima traccia, lunga circa 12 minuti ed intitolata "Visszatérés" colpisce per la sua semplicità, che rimane il tratto distintivo di tutta quest'opera, sebbene si mantenga su toni dimessi e ritmi lenti e ossessivi per tutta la sua durata. Invece la cattiveria si fa notare con la successiva "Világok közt vándorló", dove la doppia cassa incessante fa da sfondo a riff maligni ed avvolgenti. Abbiamo anche un vago alone dei primi Mayhem in questa canzone, anche per qualche inflessione nella timbrica di voce di D.

Si procede con molta qualità arrivando a "Elfeledett utak", che forse colpisce meno delle precedenti, per un riffing leggermente meno ispirato, ma la canzone in esame si riprende dopo la seconda metà, aprendosi a riff più malinconici ed emozionali. In tutto questo c'è da rimarcare il fatto che, nonostante questo disco abbia un solo ed unico compositore-esecutore, non inficia minimamente il risultato finale, in quanto nulla risulta approssimativo, ma anzi, è tutto suonato e curato molto bene, comprese le parti di batteria, semplici ma d'impatto.
Solenne ed epica appare "Path Of Wisdom", con il ritorno di tempi molto cadenzati, ed è così che la canzone va avanti fin dopo i cinque minuti, per variare un po' il riffing nella seconda parte ma mantenendo la base ritmica essenziale e lenta. Ad esempio in questo episodio Solus mostra un po' dei limiti, in quanto incapace di mantenere costante il feeling per gli oltre nove minuti di durata della canzone, finendo un po' con l'annoiare.

E si giunge alla fine con la lunga suite ambient "Lebegés", completamente realizzata con synth, senza l'aggiunta di alcuno strumento. 14 minuti che potrebbero piacere ai fan del puro ambient, così come annoiare chi non è avvezzo a queste sonorità. C'è anche da dire che forse un quarto d'ora di musica su questi toni sono leggermente azzardati, ma si sa che l'ambient non è nuovo a queste dimostrazioni, quindi si tratta di opinioni, ed in ogni caso la buona riuscita di questo album non è in discussione.
Quest'opera eponima del musicista ungherese si può tranquillamente ritagliare una grossa fetta di ammiratori, che possono andare sul sicuro se cercano un buon disco di black-ambient fatto alla vecchia maniera.

Noha igyekszem figyelemmel kísérni a honi underground történéseit, azért a Solus nevű egyszemélyes formáció rendesen meglepett a tavalyelőtti Cursed Woods című anyagával, az ott prezentált depresszív black metal ugyanis több, mint egyszerűen jó. Igazi fagyos, lélekölő alkotás, különösen hatásos az egyre hosszabbodó éjszakák magányában, idén tavasszal viszont egy hármas kiadói kooperáció eredményeként napvilágot látott ez a CD, amely több demo, EP és split után, az első nagylemez a csapat neve alatt...

Szóval kifejezetten tetszett a tavalyelőtti anyag, a cikk tárgyát képező kiadvány azonban simán állva hagyja. Nem szeretnék túlzásokba esni, de ez az ötven percet meghaladó játékidejű lemez már tényleg olyan nívót képvisel, amire nem lehet legyinteni akkor sem, ha valaki éppen nem favorizálja ezt a stílust. Többről van itt szó, mint arról, mint hogy egy trve harcos a régi Burzum lemezei bűvöletében, minimális zenei tudás birtokában néhány hangszerrel összetákol és felkárog egy fél tucat kreálmányt... Nem, pont ezen amatőr hálószoba blackereknek tarthat görbe tükröt ez az anyag. Ugyanis ezek a nóták, a szó szoros értelmében vett kompozíciók, élek a gyanúval, hogy maga a dalsorrend sem a véletlen, hanem sokkal inkább valamiféle koncepció eredménye.

Az érzékekre gyakorolt hatás. Akár így is lehetne summázni ezeket a szerzeményeket, ugyanis egészen sajátos módon örvénylik az anyag, a black metal és ambient kelléktárából egyformán merítve a hallgatói élmény fokozásához. Természetesen többnyire visszafogott tempóban gördülnek elő a témák, a sivárság, kilátástalanság érzetét keltve, D mélyebb tónusú orgánumának tolmácsolásában, ahogy a kezdő Visszatérés tizenkét perce megalapozza a hangulatot. Ez a kimért megközelítés jellemző többnyire a dalokra, a Világok közt vándorló és Az örök körforgás lendületesebb black metalos csapkodása ezen túlmutatva, mégis picit kakukktojás-jellegű, bár úgy érzem, hogy ezzel együtt sem lógnak ki ebből a gondolati sorból, amely a Path of Wisdom-ban éri el a csúcspontot, félelmetesen hatásos darab. Ezek után, a majd' negyed órás Lebegés pont azt nyújtja, amit a neve lapján várhatunk: színtiszta és rideg ambient tétel, amelyen szerintem tetten érhető a Hlidskjálf hatása. Persze, a dobgép tekintetében is, de egyáltalán nem zavaró.

Kár túlságosan bő lére ereszteni az áradozást, műfajában tényleg remek anyag született, méltán lehet rá büszke alkotója, akkor is, ha tervei szerint ez az utolsó Solus kiadvány, a jövőben Hamvak név alatt fog tovább alkotni. Azt ugyan sajnálom, hogy a minimális infókat tartalmazó bookletbe a szövegek nem kerültek bele, én kíváncsi lettem volna rájuk, de ha nem, hát nem. Ettől függetlenül nem bántam meg a beinvesztált összeget, a honi disztrók többségétől megrendelhető a CD, én a Metal Ör Die kínálatából tettem magamévá.

On June 8th 2015 Concreteweb did upload my review for Transmissions, a split in between Finnish act Moonkult and Hungarian one-man combo Solus. With certainty the latter was the best out of two on the split, at least to my humble (and totally subjective) opinion. I did have one remark (which did eventually influence my score) and that was the inferior sound quality.

Well, now David Vadkerti-Tóth returns with an untitled full length, and my first concern was, evidently, the production. And damn, but the work at the Rising BlackMoon Studio has proven its value! The sound quality indeed is of a very high level.

Solus brings fifty five minutes of varying Black Metal, and opens with the lengthy track Visszatérés, which opens the burzumesque way. It’s a slower piece, based on long-stretched, repetitive guitar melodies, fairylike synth waves, a cool, almost melodious rhythm section, and raw, raspy screams. This is a fine example of so-called Atmospheric black Metal, combining the emotions of desperation and emptiness at the one hand, and a feeling of pride and epic glory at the other. Világok Közt Vándorló then again, the second piece, is much faster and heavier, with a really f*cked-up attitude, yet a quiet outro. With Elfeledett Utak, Solus sort of returns to the somewhat Nordic-alike approach, delving into a certain Second Wave-mist, including an aura of war-pride and fearlessness.

And this sort of goes on throughout the whole album, with exception of the last composition (see later). There is a very pronounced coherence, despite a certain lack of originality (the latter being of total non-importance!). From compositional point of view, the strength and conviction of all former material (once again I’d like to refer to the split too) gets equaled, but since the sound result is so much better, my enthusiasm will be translated in an appropriate score, evidently. But it is a general feeling, for this untitled full length is truly of a very strong niveau. No matter if you want to focus on the doomish, then again on the faster parts, throughout the whole album the professionalism and conviction remains high-standard. And then, to end this journey with, let’s stay within a relative burzumesque tradition, for Levegés (which is the longest piece, clocking almost fifteen minutes), is a somewhat cosmic (not of the spacy kind!) outro, with a floating Ambient attitude during the first ten minutes, a somewhat trancelike Dark Intellectual Ambient Dance Music approach for a couple of minutes, and once again a hypnotic Trance-Ambient piece to end with. A love-it-or-hate-it finale, but undersigned, for what it’s worth, adores this elegance!

Net voor de Hongaar Dávid Vadkerti-Tóth de bandnaam veranderde naar Hamvak, bracht hij de eerste langspeler Solus uit na tal van splits. De man, die nu in Duitsland woont, bracht met Solus blackmetal die een ode brengt aan de natuur. Het werd één van de beste Satanath Records die ik mocht ontdekken.
Ik heb met plezier zitten luisteren naar dit Solus. Een ideale winterplaat (winter, bestaat dat nog?) eigenlijk, die begint met een diepatmosferisch Visszatérés, een ruigere versie van Lustre, inclusief gerekte screams. Het leunt tegen depressieve blackmetal aan, maar het bezit een lichtepische schoonheid die past bij een ijszonnetje. De lang uitgerekte loops van steeds opnieuw zichzelf herhalende gitaarlijnen en bijhorende screams doen denken aan oude Burzum, maar dan met een kosmisch/atmosferische laag natuurlijke melancholie. Ook wanneer het tempo de lucht ingaat blijft dat kille Noorse gevoel hangen, het gaat zelfs richting Polen en Oekraïne. Een duidelijke jaren negentig blackmetal vibe die teert op sfeer en minimalisme.
Het kan aan mij liggen, maar dit Solus wakkert het Burzum-vuur uit de oude dagen weer aan bij mij, en ik wijt het niet aan het seizoen maar integraal aan deze plaat. Het is bijlange niet complex of uitzonderlijk, op geen enkele manier. Maar het bezit die guurheid en melancholische kwaliteit die bij mij (en bij nog anderen) een gevoelige zwarte snaar raakt. Pas na een vijftal keer, maar het laat me niet meer los. Probeer het eens zou ik zo zeggen, het is een zeer aangename kennismaking.

After one EP, three demos, six splits and one compilation in six years’ time, D. now delivers debut Solus’ debut album. Solus walks the path of dark ambient black metal like a band such as Xasthur also does. So, think of slow lingering ominous keyboard driven black which envelops you like a nasty dream. Close your eyes and let yourself be taken along a nightmarish journey. The six songs which pass in 54 minutes come across as one and are well-executed. Personally these sort of misanthropic sounds always cheer me up. Are you a fan of Xasthur then be sure to check out ‘Solus’. If you, however, can’t stomach such bands then stay clear.

Węgierski Solus to jednoosobowy projekt muzyka ukrywającego się pod pseudonimem D. Powstał w 2009 roku, ale dopiero w 2015 przy kooperacji z Dark East Productions, Satanath Records i Metal Throne Productions ukazał się pełnowymiarowy debiut, zatytułowany po prostu Soltus. W międzyczasie D wydał na światło dzienne EP-kę, sześć splitów, trzy dema oraz zaprezentował się na kompilacji Years of Wandering. Omawiany debiut to 6 utworów lub jak kto woli 54 minuty kombinacji surowego, pierwotnego black metalu z mrocznym ambientem.

Najlepiej tę fuzję odzwierciedla otwierający płytę Visszatérés. Trwa on ponad 12 minut i utrzymany jest w raczej wolnym tempie.  Powtarzalne gitarowe riffy i grające w tle klawisze budują mroczną, depresyjną atmosferę, którą dopełniają pełne bólu i cierpienia wokale. Zupełnie inny klimat panuje w drugim z kolei Világok közt vándorló. Już od samego początku uderzają w nas blasty i zmasowane gitary, które nie odpuszczają przez następne 4 minuty. Dopiero pod sam koniec następuje pewne uspokojenie. W tej kompozycji nie ma miejsca na klawisze i melancholię, która ustępuje pola nienawiści i wściekłości.  Następny w kolejności Elfeledett utak nawiązuje do poprzednika. Wciąż mamy do czynienia z typowym black metalem, ale tym razem w średnich tempach oraz bardziej rozbudowanych partiach gitar, dzięki czemu powraca klimatyczne granie. Ciekawe aranżacje sprawiają, że ponad 8 minut upływa niepostrzeżenie. Az örök körforgás rozpoczyna się spokojnie, ale już po chwili  następuje przyspieszenie. Ten utwór jest jakby kombinacją dwóch poprzednich. Szybkie partie przeplatają się z wolniejszymi momentami. Muzyka urywa się niespodziewanie po prawie 5 minutach i rozpoczyna się Path of Wisdom. Charakteryzują go wolne tempo, powtarzalne transowe motywy. Tutaj, podobnie jak we wcześniejszych trzech numerach rola klawiszy jest zminimalizowana, ale po 9 minutach ten utwór się kończy i przechodzimy do najdłuższego na płycie, trwającego ponad 14 minut, Lebegés. W tej kompozycji black metal oddaje palmę pierwszeństwa klawiszom i ambientowi. Przez prawie kwadrans wsłuchujemy się w spokojny, lekko hipnotyzujący kawałek o klimacie zimnego wszechświata. Słuchając tego utworu, miałem wrażenia lewitowania w bezkresnym kosmosie.

Przyznaję, że przypadł mi do gustu ten album. Podoba mi się surowa forma i brzmienie muzyki oraz jej minimalizm i paradoksalnie, przystępność. Jeśli chodzi o liryki, można się domyślić, czego dotyczą lub przeszukać internet i w związku z tym fakt, że 5 na 6 utworów jest w języku węgierskim to dla mnie dodatkowy atut.

В прошлом году Satanath Records сотоварищи Dark East Productions (Россия), Metal Throne Productions (Греция) издали одного венгерского блак металлиста, который сам себе целая группа под сабжевым названием. НО. Метал архивы сообщают, что сейчас он из Венгрии перебрался в Германию. И. Творит там. НО. Под другим названием и вроде как группа называется теперь Hamvak. Вот такой ужасный венгерский лес.

Ибо играет однобуквенный человек D. именно что форест блак. Эмбиентальный, притороченный к седлу лесничего с дробовиком, соответственно, повидавший немало жутких местных историй, масса которых закончились эпизодами из каннибальских фильмов ужасов в стиле «Поворот не туда».

Кстати говоря, мало того, что D. сыграл на всех инструментах на этом диске SOLUS, так он исполнил еще партии вокала. Играет венгр еще  в группах Earth Plague, Origin of Plague и ранее подрабатывал в команде Malediction. SOLUS он организовал 10 лет назад и нарубил в лесу чертову уймищу аудио формата — без сабжа 11 сплитов, демок, эпишек. (К слову, один сплит  Moonkult / Solus  2014 Transmissions - Satanath Records - SAT093, я уже обозревал, и воспоминания остались самые подходящие). Из этого понятно, что Д. в музыкальном бизнесе далеко не новичок и можно ожидать вполне  зрелой и полноценной работы. В принципе, так оно и есть - в этом блаковом загоне (почти на 55 минут) сконцентрировано столько ненависти, давления и нездоровой меланхолии, что можно подивиться только одному - как этот человек протянул столько на белом свете.

Меланхолия - это вполне явственный спутник форестового блака SOLUS, а где-то даже и полноценный компонент. Но ее как-то надо оформлять, накалывать на остов, на кости прикручивать проволокой и крепить мелкими гвоздиками. Туда же надо приколачивать атмосферность, которая неминуемо - с туманом может покинуть этот проект. Нет причин для грусти, все тут приколочено, прикручено и прибито. ВСЕ. В наличии.

Именно с более эмбиентального трака и начинается (и эмбиентальным заканчивается) этот альбом SOLUS, - средний темп, сумрачно скрипящие гитары и клавишный баннер колышется на ветру. Да собственно, клавиши здесь сами как бриз, уносятся вдаль целых 12 минут первого трака. Плюс ко всему трендовому набору здесь в наличии комплектация блаковым, добротно расщепленным, зловещим шелестящим вокалом. Удачно настроенный по низам ударный механизм (который, кажется, стучит прямо в грудь) является частью будильника, который возвещает о пробуждении сил потусторонних и genius loki (дух местности).  

Но чу, в траке номер 2 половина масок SOLUS уже сброшена, ибо здесь вкл. быстрый темп: лесопилка переключается на быстрый режим, туман неумолимо сдувается в сторону холмов, а вокал истинно зреет и вызверяется. Наряду с мощными голосовыми трелями, которые устремляются в глубины венгерских перелесков и гор, вокалист вдруг переходит к торможению и буквально засасывается почвой с сосновыми иголками. Так что на этом альбоме реализуется как минимум два концепта. На всех слоях записи создан подчеркнуто мощный и цельный саунд, не позволяющий усомниться в качестве работы.

Известная доля патетики расположена на серебристых дорожках этого диска SOLUS. Но вполне оправданной и вполне в стилистике поджанра. Да и форест-блак не может себя позиционировать без патетики и здорового нахальства. К тому же патетика эта в ряде мест похожа на изумрудный ковер роскошной растительности, которая покрывает бездонные вонючие лужи, примыкающие к венгерским болотам.

Д. отлично воссоздает многофактурность форестового переживания, его цепляющий неформальный  аудиальный аспект, так хорошо знакомый адептам, да к тому же остающийся в стилевых рамках. Нужные  настроения созданы психологически верно, а особое ритмическое задание создает необходимый эффект гипнотизма. Приглушенный свет, пламя свечи, вот что еще нужно для внимательного прослушивания этого диска SOLUS. Really!

P. S. Финальный трак — тот самый эмбиентальный, так и просится на вторую прослушку. Может от того, что напоминает буржумовские эмбиент-работы? Шаманство. Именно шаман был изображен на обложке упомянутого сплита.

Solus es una banda de un solo integrante, fundada por el multi-instrumentista Vadkerti-Tóth Dávid, fundada en 2006 y luego de una serie de trabajos desembocó en este homónimo que a la postre sería su canto del cisne, ya que luego de editado la banda cambiaria su nombre por el de Hamvak.

Que tenemos aquí? Podríamos decir que la tapa del álbum más o menos nos guía hacia terrenos negros y melódicos. Así pues, black metal muy experimental es lo que trae “Solus”, siempre con el habitual misterio que rodea a este tipo de bandas.

La combinación de los teclados, guitarras y voces, combinando a la perfección todos estos elementos, muestra a las claras la intención de ser variopinto por parte del amigo David, y al tiempo se hace lugar para meter agresión de la mano de unos contundentes blast beats.

Seguramente los eruditos del género (no es mi caso) podrán hablar de “depressive black” o “post-black”, merced a los pasajes instrumentales elaborados, casi hipnóticos algunos de ellos.

La placa es extensa, casi 55 minutos, pero el viaje es placentero para aquellos que gusten de este tipo de bandas.

Como dije en el comienzo, con este álbum Solus termina una etapa de la mejor manera, para dar lugar a Hamvak, de la cual seguramente escucharemos en un futuro.

Хотели бы вы знать, как бы зазвучал совместный релиз Burzum и Mayhem образца где-то 1993 года? Тогда вот вам прекрасный пример этого симбиоза - Solus. Альбом открывается прекраснейшим 12-минутным треком, который украсил бы альбом Hvis Lyset Tar Oss, да что там украсил бы - он будто бы соткан из той же атмосферы, что и упомянутый альбом Burzum. Второй трек - более быстрый блэк с очень заметным влиянием Mayhem (даже вокал чем-то смахивает на вокал Аттилы с дебютника), но все же музыка замешана на бурзумовском настроении. Следующие треки - различные вариации микса упомянутых групп, опять же с заметной доминантой Варга и снижающейся долей Mayhem от трека к треку, но и кое что лично от музыканта тоже есть. В целом звучание альбом соответствует атмосфере и заявленной планке - слегка размытый хрустящий саунд гитар, глубокий ревер на вокале. Даже драм-машина не портит настроение, потому что она сделана очень даже толково и профессионально, хоть и немного монотонно. Но эта монотонность - залог сохранения атмосферы родоначальников стиля. Да, Dark East Productions и Satanath Records в очередной раз доказали, что выпускают действительно стоящие проекты и говна не держат. Отлично, этот диск стоит выше всех крайних опусов Луи Каше вместе взятых, он как глоток воздуха. PS. Одна малоприятная мелочь: проект достаточно долго шел к своему дебютнику через демки, EP и сплиты, и, выпустив его, сменил название, а, возможно, и настрой. Жаль... а может и не жаль, это действительно стоящий того релиз.

Hungary’s Solus send strong, expressive and melancholic signals through a charming black metal/ambient channel. The project is led by an instrumentalist and vocalist who goes by D, and he’s capable of treating our ears to some tasteful melodies. Solus’ self-titled release hit the scene back in 2015, and there’s a lot to enjoy here.

 

The first track, “Visszatérés,” is like a slow descent into nothingness. Along the way, we meet dim shades of sorrow and despair. The backbone contains satisfying strumming and the pulse of the percussion. A few desperate lamentations give a voice to the melancholia.

 

“Világok közt vándorló” arrives next. We’re introduced to blast beats and more aggressive vocals, showing the varied tricks Solus has up its sleeve. Emotions are heavy on “Elfeledett utak,” and glorious tones float within the track’s scowling expression.

 

The beginning of “Az örök körforgás,” sneaks up on your ears with a little mystery and a touch of evil. That’s all right because that’s what we need at that point in this album. The rest of the track parades its low spirit, and it eventually ends up along the outskirts of the next song; you can tell from the start of “Path of Wisdom” that it’s simply delectable. Heavy guitar riffs fall down from a sorrowful place. There is something effective in the drumming, which keeps a steady beat throughout the majority of the song. “Lebegés” ends the album with an experimental mood, creating an abysmal plane.  Its presence grows and swallows the listener.

 

“Solus” is a fine take on the black metal/ambient style. The tough, standoffish personality of black metal is present. At the same time, mists of tone and emotion seem to be longing to spark confrontation. I am infatuated with “Path of Wisdom” (a surefire remedy for life’s miserable moments), and I highly recommend it. Only five other tracks are found on “Solus,” but they leave a lingering impression. Trust something here will speak to the very core of you.

Niekedy sa človek dostane od menej známych labelov k nahrávkam rôzneho charakteru. Občas máte šťastie a dostane sa k vám kúsok, ktorý stojí za vypočutie a dokonca si ho pustíte znova a vrátite sa k nemu a niekedy si poviete, že to už teda počuť nikdy nechcete. Už dopredu prezradím, že prípad tejto recenzie bude pozitívny nakoľko sa takéto články človeku píšu ľahšie.

 

Ruský label Satanath records vydal v roku 2015 jediný full album maďarského one man projeaktu Solus. Black metal s prvkami ambientu píšu všemocné archívy a celkom slušný počet splitiek, demáčov a nejaká tá kompilačka za existenciu deviatich rokov. V súčasnosti sa projekt premenoval a funguje pod názvom Hamvak.

 

Debutový album s rovnomenným názvom "Solus" má pekný minimalistický cover art a booklet a napovedá tak niečo aj o štruktúre hudby, ktorá sa na cd ukrýva. Takmer hodinová nahrávka začína ambientou časťou, ktorý sa pretransformuje v atmosferický black metal v pomalom tempe. Skladba "Visszaterés" aj napriek svojej dĺžke 12 minút v úplne jednoduchej kompozícii nenudí a dosť pripomína štýl Estóncov Thou Shell of Death. Ak by ste si mysleli, že v podobne zasnenom duchu to bude pokračovať, tak hneď na začiatku druhej piesni dostanete poriadny kopanec do tváre v podobe rýchlotempovej klepačky s riffmi ako vystrihnutými zo staršej tvorby Keep of Kalessin. Zvuk bicích a ostatku je príjemne živý a vokál s efektom odozvy občas mierne zaniká. Ten miestami v dlhých a ťahavých pasážach pripomína krajana Attilu Cisara z Mayhem.

 

Pasáže niektorých piesní sú popretkávané jednoduchými melódiami, no väčšina z nich okrem spomínanej druhej sa nesie v pomalom tempe s občasnými výnimkami. Skladba, ktorá sa asi najlepšie zapamätá je jediná s anglickým názvom "Path of Wisdom" no a všetky ostatné sú v maďarčine. Texty v booklete dostupné nie sú a aj keby boli, asi by sa mi ich nepodarilo rozlúskať nakoľko po maďarsky viem úplné nič. Predposledná menovaná je skutočne chytľavý kúsok, ktorý v podstate stojí na jednom jednoduchom riffe v štýle Mayhem z éry Mysteries. Záver albumu sa prenecháva 15 minútovej ambientnej vate, ktorá mi prišla úplne zbytočná, nakoľko nepriniesla nič zaujímavé a ani úchvatné a oproti zvyšku albumu je tam skutočne asi len na okrasu.

 

K záveru by som dodal, že album Solus je skutočne zaujímavým počinom a aj akási nesúrodosť skladieb je v tomto prípade osviežujúcim prvkom. Asi by som nerád počúval ďalší klon Thou Shell of Death. Tu sa vyskytujú predovšetkým prvky nórskeho black metalu z 90. rokov. Záver v podobe ambientnej štvrťhodinky je nuda, ale ináč má album takú svojskú atmosféru. Určite sa oplatí sa naň pozrieť a ja si určite ešte pozriem jeho pokračovanie pod názvom Hamvak.

Toto album od projektu SOLUS sice není nejnovější, ale v podstatě je stále aktuální. Stojí za ním maďarský instrumentalista „D“, civilním jménem Dávid Vadkerti-Tóth, jenž se po sérii realizovaných demáčů a splitek konečně dopracoval k dlouhohrající desce. Na ní shrnul veškeré své hudební vize do jednotného balíku, který víceméně vzdává hold vpravdě nesmrtelnému vlivu BURZUM.

 

Blackmetalový projev SOLUS je tedy zvukově velmi surový, ale zároveň „nikam nespěchající“. Jednotlivé skladby zcela podléhají středně rychlému tempu a určitý atmosferický vliv dostává SOLUS až před brány doom metalu, potažmo black-ambinetu. Rezonující zvuk kytar a extrémní vokály pak už jen zastřešují to, co už v podstatě patří ke koloritu žánru.Solus_band Je tedy zjevné, že si „Solus“ snadno spletete s celou řadou obdobně laděných nahrávek, ovšem ne zdaleka každý hudebník řeší otázku osobitosti na první místě. A to je přesně i Dávidům případ.

 

Jak to ale s jeho projektem bude v budoucnu, to pravděpodobně ví jenom on sám. V průběhu času se totiž přestěhoval z vlastní domoviny do Británie a s největší pravděpodobností se bude v následujícím období věnovat trochu jiné muzice. Uvidíme, co nového z toho všeho vyleze. Nicméně „Solus“ je album, které cílovou skupinu posluchačů bez problémů uspokojí.
