How long ago has it been since I read the great Ray Bradbury‘s Dandelion Wine? Long enough that the passage of years could be measured as a geologic epoch. And I hadn’t thought of the book in a very long time until seeing the title of the new album by In Tenebriz, Bitter Wine of Summer, and reading that the allusion to Dandelion Wine was no accident. That set my memory trolling back through the years, rekindling thoughts of that tale about the summer of two young boys in a fictional place called Green Town, and the experiences it captured of joy, sorrow, youth and old age, terror and fantasy, and the realization that death comes for us all. I re-discovered this passage from the novel, spoken from the mind of its protagonist:

“So if trolleys and runabouts and friends and near friends can go away for a while or go away forever, or rust, or fall apart or die, and if people can be murdered, and if someone like great-grandma, who was going to live forever, can die… if all of this is true… then… I, Douglas Spaulding some day, must…”

Drawing inspiration from Dandelion Wine is a rarity in the world of extreme metal (does anyone know of another instance?). The album’s cover art is, to put it mildly, also an exception. It is also connected to the music, as described by the labels who are releasing the album, but the words probably come from the man behind this Russian atmospheric black metal band:

“The girl on the cover art is a collective image of summer nights filled with the stuffy aroma of flowers and the chirp of wondrous insects. The lyrical hero, having tasted all the gifts of summer – from burning heat to a thunderstorm – imperceptibly comes to the realization of the transience of time. Summer wine is sweet and easily intoxicating, but in the last sip – the bitterness of near autumn, lost hopes, unfulfilled dreams.”

The song we’re premiering today, which is the album’s title track, successfully captures these sentiments, these feelings of pleasure shadowed by the unstoppable progression of the seasons toward winter, and of life toward death.

The music is an assembly of contrasting sensations, of physical vitality and dreamlike reveries, of mystical wonder and wrenching pain. Orchestral strings and shining synths provide the overture to a crystalline guitar harmony joined by thrumming bass notes. But the contrasts arrive soon, through caustic screams and guttural roars, and abrasive riffing accented by pulsing jolts. The trilling lead guitar creates a melody that is sorrowful but alluring; the voice channels frustration, anger, and pain.

The enchantment of the soulful, ringing guitar melodies becomes the true heart of the song, a beautiful portrayal of wistfulness and yearning, of bereavement and resignation. But In Tenebriz counterbalances that with strong rhythmic drives, and layers it with the sheen of synths that create an atmosphere of panoramic grandeur.

Beginning with the Autumn Constellation album in 2015, In Tenebriz has pursued themes that use that the natural phenomena of the seasons as a way of reflecting the inner experiences of the lyrical protagonists, while drawing upon the elements of atmospheric black metal, doom, ambient music, and post-metal to give musical shape to these external changes and internal moods. Both that record and the ones that have followed have also drawn upon literary inspiratuions. We are told that Bitter Wine of Summer brings this cycle of music to its close.

The new album will be released on April 27th by GrimmDistribution and Vidar Records. For further details about the phsyical and digital editions, check the links below. And for a sign of how the album progresses, we’ve also included a stream of a previously released single, “The Birth of August“, which is the album’s penultimate song.

Between despair and melancholy, In Tenebriz arise out of darkness again.

Created in 2005 by Wolfir (vocals/all instruments, Chertopolokh) in Russia, it’s today Bitter Wine of Summer, Doom/Ambient Black Metal one-man band’ twelfth full-length this is offered to us by Grimm Distribution.

The album begin by With a Taste of Wormwood, an instrumental composition which is both gorgeous and painful. Riffs are magical, the rhythm part keeps this mysterious and dark touch, but harmonics speak for themselves. Howlings are coming back for Bitter Wine of Summer, a song that stays in this soft and hypnotic but also haunting and airy weave. Switching from clean to a stabbing saturated sound, the rhythm explodes from side to side, making us progressively enter in the band’s universe, who continues with Into Crimson Oblivion. Way more aggressive, but also very tearing, the composition focuses on a tortured lead guitar. The clean sounded-break will strengthen emotions the musician permanently injects to his creations. Stellar Dust’s introduction has this magical aspect that immediately seduces, added to an effective progression. The song’s atmosphere stays coherent with the whole album’s one but… this song is specific, melting diversified and complementary influences to serve an ice-cold melodicity.

Grass Still Remembers Your Trace develops anew a melancholic and airy atmosphere thanks to a heavy rhythmic and a penetrating sound on this short but intense instrumental song. We go for Heart In The Pattern Of Roots, a track of which introduction let us divine a more solid rhythmic. It is indeed Black Metal that aggresses us, pouring sorrow their sorrow and their madness at the same time. The album continues with the harrowing The Birth of August and its black melodies. Howls are placed in order to make the listener feel caught by the sound then lacerated from everywhere by those screams. We also feel some kind of violence that wasn’t here on other songs, notably thanks to a more cavernous voice. Last composition, Let The Night Do The Talking focuses on mystic sounds. Keyboards on the background, resonating notes and a catchy progression, that reaches its nearly liberating climax without violence.

Inspired and inspiring simultaneously, Bitter Wine of Summer is a proof of regularity with In Tenebriz. The mastermind is never short of ideas, and unveils track by track atmospheres both similar in terms of darkness, but also different. Violence, sorrow, pain and reflexion are on the bill of this excellent album.

In  Tenebriz  are  a  solo  project  from  Russia  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  mixture  of  ambient,  atmospheric  black  and  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2020  album  "Bitter  Wine  of  Summer"  which  was  released  by  Grimm  Distribution.

Clean  playing  starts  off  the  album  while  the  music  also  gets  very  atmospheric  sounding  at  times  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  and  some  of  the  tracks  are  instrumentals.

Vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  while  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  elements  of  doom  metal.  Clean  playing  also  makes  a  return  on  most  of  the  later  tracks  along  with  some  ambient  style  synths  also  being  utilized  at  times  as  well  as  some  songs  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  death  metal  growls.

A  couple  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  one  song  also  introducing  programmed  beats  onto  the  recording  as  well  as  the  music  also  taking  the  melodic  doom/death  metal  style  of  the  90's  and  mixing  it  with  more  modern  atmospheric  black  metal  touches,  stringed  instruments  can  also  be  heard  towards  the  end.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  In  Tenebriz  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  ambient,  atmospheric  black  and  doom  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.

Альбом “Bitter Wine Of Summer” завершает цикл в творчестве In Tenebriz, посвященный временам года.

Из песен-фаворитов для себя назову “Into Crimson Oblivion” и инструментальную “Grass Still Remembers Your Trace”.

Moskovalaislähtöinen In Tenebriz on black metalia ja doomia yhdistävä sooloprojekti.

Edellisellään lähinnä doomia, Burzum-syntikoita ja black metal -ärinää toisiinsa melankolisesti sulauttanut In Tenebriz tavoitteli lähes avaruudellisia tunnelmia.

Bitter Wine of Summer tavoittelee tarttumapintaa kauniisti soiden.

In Tenebriz on valinnut sopivasti erilaisen tien, mikä on sinänsä kiehtovaa.

"Bitter Wine Of Summer", К таковым можно отнести, к примеру, очень достойную работу "As The Spring Uncovers Pain" (2017) и менее удачную "Winternight Poetry" (2018).

Russian One-Man Atmospheric Black Metal band In Tenebriz have released their latest album recently, so it shall be reviewed.

As per usual, the Black Metal part of the album is slight, as are the sung parts. This time more than usual, you can feel how the music treads from the layer of Atmospheric Black Metal unto Post-Black Metal, while still holding on to its core essence.

This band also has a slower tempo than most of this genre, so much so that you could consider some parts to have Doom Metal influences. Also, most of the album has some sort of ethereal feeling that feels similar in a way to Tiamat or other Gothic bands, but with Black Metal added to the mixture.

Loaded with well-played and non-distorted guitars and a soft percussion behind the beautiful voice, you really feel the music as to be a sip of bitter wine of summer. Covered in opulence, there is also some darkness hidden, like in the song “Into Crimson Oblivion”, but it is clearly not the main feeling to be transmitted.

I recommend this album to fans of Atmospheric and Post-Black Metal.

Bitter Wine Of Summer.

The cover of an album is something very important for me. If a cover is ugly or you feel you have seen it a thousand times before, most of the times that applies to the music too. On the other hand, a unique, different from the ordinary album cover, apart from making you have a positive attitude towards the album before you listen to it, it also gives you hints about what you are going to listen. That is the case with “Bitter Wine of Summer”, the twelfth full length album of the one – man band In Tenebriz from Russia. The band was formed by Wolfir in 2005 and since then, apart from the full lengths, they have released six EPs and six split albums. “Bitter Wine of Summer” was released in 27th of April 2020 by GrimmDistribution in CD format, limited to 500 copies and it contains eight tracks, three of which are instrumental ones, with overall duration of about forty-two minutes. As I mentioned before, the cover and the general feeling I got from the artwork, the drawings, the colors used is very successful in putting you into the atmosphere and generally into the world of In Tenebriz.

To be more precise, the artwork of “Bitter Wine of Summer” creates feelings of melancholy, a bittersweet nostalgia, a warm sadness, while the scenery relates to nature as it gives you images of a blossomed forest at the end of summer, just before getting into autumn and everything begin to die. This is a very accurate visual representation of the music presented here. The riffs are mainly mid-tempo, melodic, sometimes tremolo with a tendency to more depressing feelings, most of the times though they are clean and warm offering a bittersweet melancholy. The romantic, melancholic atmosphere makes the journey intense and sentimental and is the main element that characterizes the band’s compositions. The duration of the tracks vary from four to eight minutes and their structure is good in general, having the appropriate changes both in tempo and in melody. However, there are a few parts that the composition becomes repetitive and quite tedious for the listener.

Wolfir is playing all the instruments and performing the vocals and his performance is satisfying. The guitars both the distorted and the clean ones, are accurate and sentimental, giving life to the images, drawing a colorful scenery and expressing the feelings well. The bass is audible and having an important role into the compositions. It does not take the leading role in the compositions, but its simple but interesting lines and its warm sound make the compositions complete. The drums sound a little stiff and flat, so I guess they are programmed, while their lines are basic and quite predictable. They are just doing their job. The vocals are harsh, distorted Black Metal vocals, in some parts they are deep, while in others harsher, they are expressive but too distorted for the general atmosphere and feelings of the album. The production is very clean and warm and along with the balanced mixture, the result is solid. The lyrics are written in Russian, despite their titles are in English, and they are included in the booklet. I don’t know what they are about, but you can find some keywords such as summer, grass, August, night, wine which match the feelings and the atmosphere.

“Bitter Wine of Summer” is the first album of In Tenebriz that I listen to so I can’t compare it with previous ones and comment on the evolution of the band. The album has its moments and can offer a beautiful experience to the listener. However, it doesn’t manage to become something more than a simple journey that after experiencing it, you will forget it and nothing will make you want to relive it. The fans of melodic, atmospheric and heavily romantic Black Metal will appreciate the album. The rest of you, prefer something else.

I really liked the last IN TENEBRIZ album I heard. So much in fact that can’t wait to hear this one. I expect this to be a journey of emotions for me. But seeing as I am pretty much prepared for it I think I’ll be alright at the end of it. This is the 12th album if I counted them all right. I reviewed the 10th in my previous review. As I said then I like this whole atmospheric black metal trip. This is as atmospheric as that other one was. This is music to turn off the light too and just let it take you one journey in your head. Black metal doesn’t have to be all brutal to be good. Even somber things like this works.

I did mention the name of Vladimir Prokofiev a couple of times before. However, this was linked to his visual art for cover paintings / drawings. Vladimir is the guy behind the famous Paint-It-Black Design, known for his works for albums by bands like A Thousand Sufferings, Taiga, Vehementor, Ethir Anduin, Istina and many more.

Vladimir is known as musician as well. Under the name Wolfir, he is the vocalist / instrumentalist for a handful of nice projects, like Chertopolokh, Wolfir or the very productive outfit In Tenebriz. I do follow this specific act for quite some time; I also wrote a review for 2018’s Winternight Poetry, apparently. This review will deal with the twelfth (or so) full-length under the In Tenebriz moniker, released via the very open-minded label GrimmDistribution (part of the Satanath family). It comes in a jewel-case edition, which includes a three-folded six-page booklet, containing the Russian lyrics (pay attention: the titles are in English, at least when it comes to the edition meant for our market). Stunning, truly amazing, is the cover-artwork and the visual art inside – evidently done by Mister Wolfir himself. It’s colorful, psychedelic too, and focusing on flowers, insects and wine. As an amateur of wine (flowers and insects can inspire me too in, eh, special occasions) – nope, this thing won’t morph into a wine review…

Anyway, Bitter Wine Of Summer is an eight-track album, written over a period of many years; the earliest fragments were written back in 2012, part of a cycle that finally resulted in its conceptual value. It is the final step within a concept of the seasons, and a huge dose of inspiration seems to come from Dandelion Wine, a novel by American author Ray Bradbury. Allegoric and metaphorical, the protagonist of that book, the allusion of bitter tastes, and the appropriate yet truly stunning artwork are like guides to the sonic side of this album.

And that ‘sonic side’ of Bitter Wine Of Summer, well, it surely continues the path of in-depth atmosphere and emotional grandeur. It is sort of characteristic once more compared to the former material, and different at the same time. Once more, In Tenebriz combine different related (sub) genres, with one thing in common: the lack of joy. It’s a conscious attitude, for man’s doom will always befall. The material is enormously varying within the structural execution and the speed. However, that speed dwells in regions of slow to mid-tempo, lacking an overdose of blasting outbursts. The better part indeed is doomy and slow-paced, including some accelerated moments and quite some sluggish passages.

When talking about that structural variation, I can refer to the many acoustic passages, the diversified harmonies or the aforementioned influence of genres like DSBM (Depressive-Suicidal Black Metal) [yet without the self-mutilating approach; rather focusing on inner tristesse and mournful consciousness], Doom-Death, Gothic Dark Metal, Post-Black, Shoegaze, Funeral Doom, Atmospheric Black Metal and the likes. Also the equilibrium of traditional elements at the one hand, and progressive and modernistic details at the other hand, come with a well-balanced finesse.

The sound quality is unmistakably professional, with every single instrument represented in a decent equilibrium. The acoustic versus the harsher parts, the funereal versus the livid excerpts, the guitar-led versus the rhythmic chapters; the whole album maintains a clean, even catchy productional result. Okay, little more roughness would strengthen the dolor and dander behind the album’s message, but this isn’t but my personal opinion. But one cannot deny the fantastic mix, resulting in a worthy balance of all instruments and voices involved. Once again I can easily refer to the perfected interaction of acoustic and electronic contrasts, or the well-thought interplay of lead and rhythm instrumentation.

As said, the result does not focus on suicidal thoughts or self-mutilating pleasure; it’s rather an interpretation of awareness that sun and rain, Summer’s warmth and Winter’s Arctic coldness, the light of day and the obscurity of a moonless Autumn night, are permanently returning, fading away, reappearing, evolving and repeatedly existent. The whole sonic adventure translates the conceptual storytelling, with a fine dose of nostalgia and melancholy, misery and mystification, sadness and resignation, wonder and mysticism. Flowers, butterflies and wine define the cozy beauty of Summer, but the protagonist realizes that each season eventually comes to an end. Autumn knocks at the door, and the metaphorical introspection, desolation, coldness and greyness of that new season, inevitable and undeniable, gets intensively translated through In Tenebriz’ Aural Art. The taste of wine gets a bitter aftertaste…

I haven't heard of this band before, although In Tenebriz's discography looks phenomenal - over 10 albums to date, plus many smaller releases since 2006. The founder of the project is Wolfir, who has been composing his music since the beginning of the project, and Bitter Wine Of Summer is so far his last album, released in 2020.

The band's style can be described as a bitter melodic doom metal, songs are consisting of many atmospheric soundscapes, captured when there are no guitar distortions in music, which is happening quite often in songs of the band. Guitar leads are smoothly woven into the music and warm/cold atmosphere of music brings a nostalgia of autumn - it is basically when In Tenebriz sounds more doom metal which is like 50% of the album.  The other side of the band are harsher black metal elements in songs, such as murky vocals and gloomier sounding guitar passages - Heart In The Pattern Of Roots. The music is played in slow and at medium tempos, drum (nice percussion effects in Stellar Dust) and bass (disturbed distortion in  Grass Still Remembers Your Trace) musical ideas sound simple but good enough so the one could say that music of In Tenebriz on this album feels overall satisfying/fully completed.

As for one-man project, the album impress as if it was a group effort because there are no rushed moments in songs, calm musical atmosphere has its steady (like a river) stream, Wolfir plays on all instruments equally good, his music is darkened by black metal anxiety coming from guitar distortions and vocals - the other 50% of the music...So, it`s well balanced album between doom and black metal and songs sound good by craft.

Wolfir (all music, lyrics and arts) who runs In Tenebriz on his own since 2005, but maybe lately known better as Vladimir Prokofiev from Paint-It-Black Design, is a very productive artist and that's pretty sure, because "Bitter Wine of Summer" is the twelfth full-length album of In Tenebriz. The new album contains eight compositions created in the style of melodic doom metal. The songs are decent as well as their sound. But an interesting fact is that the vocal parts were executed in a black metalish way. There are some flaws here and there, but not too annoying ones, thus the material is quite well enjoyable. It lasts over 41 minutes and comes with a colorful yet tasteful 6-page booklet and pit-art graphics on the playing side of the CD. Six songs out of the eight have lyrics too, which were written in Russian language. I won't say Wolfir's songs are extraordinary, as they aren't at all, but the soundscapes he managed to produce on his own I've found deeply sincere. Nice job there, both musically and visually!!!

Wolfir, tuo yhden venäläisen miehen armeija on pistänyt kaikessa yksinäisyydessään jo yli 15 vuotta In Tenebriz -nimen turvin levyjä pihalle kovalla tahdilla, ja nyt kyseessä oleva äänite olisi laskelmieni mukaan kahdestoista.

Pääpaino on silti haikeissa melodioissa ja sahatuissa tremoloriffeissä sekä My Dying Briden mieleen tuovilla hitaammilla poljennoilla. Omiksi suosikeiksi levyltä nousevat aloituskaksikko, eli ilman laulua soitettu “With A Taste Of Wormwood” ja nimikkobiisi “Bitter Wine Of Summer” sekä “The Birth Of August”.

Moni kuuntelukokemus kaatuisi helposti tähän, mutta In Tenebriz onnistuu rima heiluen pääsemään mitalisijoille.

“Bitter Wine Of Summer” on oiva levy laittaa soimaan korvalappustereoista, lähteä viinilasi kädessä ihmettelemään syksyn liekehtiviä värejä ja fiilistelemään kaiken kuolemaa, mikäli kauneusvirheet eivät ole este omalle nautinnolle.
