If you’re unfamiliar with Astarium’s creative impulses, the name of the song we’re premiering in this post may mislead you. Coming from a black metal band whose music is often characterized as “symphonic and ambient BM”, the name “Snow Storm” might make you expect one thing, and you might find something else instead — something much more intriguing and alluring than what you might expect. And we’ll say further that those characterizations of Astarium’s music as “symphonic black metal” (which you will see on Metal-Archives, among other places) may also prove to be a bit of a mis-direction, at least in the case of Astarium’s new album.

But before explaining what we mean, we should note that the name of the new album is Hyperborea, and it will be co-released on April 18th by GrimmDistribution (Ukraine) and Gravações Tunguska (Portugal). It is the eighth album since 2008 by this one-man project from Novosibirsk, Russia, and (we are informed) it was inspired by “the sagas of northern lands about honor and valor, about blood and revenge, about beauty and gloom, about glory and dishonor”.

And now let’s return to “Snow Storm“. Rather than a blizzard of icy sound and caustic snarls overlaid with sheets of dominating synths, which is what you might expect, it instead delivers a head-hooking rocking beat and an equally head-hooking riff with shimmering and swirling flute-like tones overhead, creating a mystifying and spritely dance that contrasts with the vocals, which are an array of crocodilian croaks and macabre growls. The song is like the soundtrack to a gathering of witches and warlocks, jumping in sinister glee about a forest bonfire while a hellish dance-master issues his grotesque exhortations.

The infernal dance subsides before the end, the rhythms vanishing, allowing the swirl of flickering and fluid tones, and gasps of the wind, to hold sway, as if all the whirling forms have vanished into the mists, leaving only snowfall and the tingle of the spellbound memory on your chilling skin. It’s really quite a magical and illuminating experience.

The one previously released song from the album, “Halls of Winter Gods“, which we’re also including below, provides a different kind of vision, but one that’s no less enthralling. It has even more mystical components to its sound, but also more ravaging cadences and more ravishing attacks. Yet that flute-like sound is still present, spilling out its secrets of sorrow while the music gallops and thunders. And the crystalline keyboard chords make a dance of their own that doesn’t sound grounded in the here and now, but in mystic halls where old gods watch over old lands.

Russia's  Astarium  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  the  ambient  and  symphonic  style  of  black  metal  from  his  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2020  album  "Hyperborea"  which  was  released  as  a  joint  effort  between  Grimm  Distribution  and  Gravações Tunguska.

Nature  sounds  and  ambient  style  synths  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  programmed  beats  a  few  seconds  later.  Symphonic  elements  also  mix  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  most  of  the  vocals  are  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams.

When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  music  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  some  spoken  word  also  being  used  at  times.

When  tremolo  picking  is  utilized  during  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  it  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling  along  with  one  track  also  introducing  clean  playing  onto  the  recording  as  well  as  the  music  also  adding  in a   decent  mixture  of  both  old  school  and  modern  influences,  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  battle  sounds  can  also  be  heard  and  one  of  the  tracks  is  also  an  instrumental.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while t he  lyrics  cover  darkness,  death,  evil  and  occultism  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Astarium  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  ambient  and  symphonic  occult  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.

Diving back into the review pile revealed this, the 8th (and newest) full-length from Russia's symphonic/ambient black metal band Astarium. A familiar band to those who have been following this blog over the years. Hyperborea was recorded a couple of years ago before being self-released in March 2019. It has since been released on CD via GrimmDistribution (Ukraine) and Gravações Tunguska (Portugal). Astarium has always been an intriguing project for me, as in spite of being very productive, the creativity put into it by sole member SiN has always shone through.

This album contains sixteen songs, of which four are ambient/instrumental numbers like album opener ‘Mysterious Fog’. That may not seem like a positive statement to begin a review with,  but I’ll expand on it later on.

‘The Wild Hunt’ typifies Astarium’s approach to synth-led black metal. To some it may be an acquired taste, but it’s charm is unmistakable and here SiN provides a song that’s certainly more fun and avant-garde than normal thanks to the melodic keys and faster tempo.’ Doomed’ comes at you with a heavy dose of industrial atmosphere and majestic power from the powerful horn/orchestral tones that exist in between the brief guitar passages.

When Astarium focuses it’s energy on slower songs, it show/s a completely different side to the band. ‘Halls Of Winter Gods’ is one such song and the lengthy opening passage makes you think that something mournful and slow is around the corner, but what it actually reveals and a mid-paced folk/black metal song that’s very well put together.

The mind is often misunderstood, especially when it comes to creatives and that’s definitely the case here. The tracks here follow on from each other well but also seem to be independent of each other, as if they were composed at random points during Astarium’s tenure (they possibly were) and then put together quickly to form this album. ‘When The Proud Die’ is an oddly meandering but short piece of black metal, which leads to ‘Snow Storm’, which provides somewhat of an escape thanks to it’s melody.

There’s a more accessible feeling about ‘Sign Of Cosmic Might’, mainly down to it’s structure and nod towards alternative music as well as just extreme metal. At least that’s how it comes across to me anyway. Feel free to tell me I’m talking rubbish here! Next up is another folk/medieval led song in the form of ‘For The King!’, which is also one the longest present on the album. In parts it’s mystical, while still being a challenging listen in same way that Norway’s Fleurety can be.

The instrumental interlude ‘Battle Glory’ retains the odd momentum that the album has, thanks to the use of upbeat tempos again and an air of fantasy. Brilliant played organ and woven samples make ‘Daughter Of Imir’ an obvious standout on Hyperborea. It sounds more accomplished and well rounded alongside the stirring guitar work and sensitive use of vocals throughout.

The brief chaos of ‘Red Rose’ that follows is a bit of a shock. I say that only because ‘Daughter Of Imir’ was such a complete song. Thankfully, ‘Kill To Survive’ brings that feeling back with whale-song and a cosmic atmosphere that’s as sinister as it is tuneful. The rest of the song is filled with Astarium’s signature ambient black metal.

The percussion on ‘Carpathian Windspirit’ takes centre stage, pulling the interlude through to it’s conclusion before ‘Curse From The Past’ fills the speakers with more upbeat extremity once again, though the constant melody that flows through it really does draw your ear in. Penultimate song ‘Lucky Bastard’ sounds like it could have been conceived during the writing of 2013’’s From The Cleaved Old Coffin, which contained two forty-second songs in very much the same vein.

Closing with ‘Zhothaqquah’, a song that draws in so many elements of Astarium’s creativity, it’s hard to deny that Hyperborea is a worthy album. Going back to my initial statement about those unmentioned songs (which are instrumental interludes), I was going to say that following my look over the album’s booklet, only twelve full songs are listed and therefore; those added instrumental songs may not have been needed; however, now that I’ve listened to the album in full, I really appreciate them.

Even though at times it feels slightly disjointed, Hyperborea is a fascinating listen and it highlights moments from different parts of Astarium’s recording career, in the same way that compilations do for other bands. I’m not sure whether that was intended but it works all the same.

Today’s review is of Russian Symphonic Black Metal band Astarium’s latest album, “Hyperborea”.

The style has not changed much from the other albums, so it’s nice to find a band that remains faithful to its style. Nevertheless, they aren’t too remarkable.

With a nice guitar for the style that doesn’t do too much, basic drums and average voice, you find this band ok, but this is much better than most bands nowadays. While not being bad, this album isn’t too good either, maybe it would have been more enjoyable being shorter, since 16 songs may bore much listeners.

The music is similar to “Full Moon in the Scorpio” era Limbonic Art, but it also has its uniqueness, especially in the keyboards, which mostly sound like Ghost, but that also add pieces that give a Dungeon Synth vibe to some parts. Despite this, they may be quite overused, shadowing the other instruments to a point that contaminates the music. Maybe more parts without keyboards would make the songs more dynamic. It is also curious how the length of each track is on average very short, with most songs being of 2 minutes or so compared to the tendency to compose longer pieces in this style.

I recommend this album if you enjoy Symphonic Black Metal. It’s an interesting album from a veteran band that may lack some strength but that even so manages to be better than most.

Astarium - Hyperborea (2020) | Russia | Symphonic Black Metal/Ambient | 059GD

"Curse From The Past" muy pocos cambios , solo cambios de voz.

Sin, eredeti nevén (latin átírással) Nikolay Sikeritsky a king diamond-i festés egyedivé tételével azonban semmit sem bajlódik.

Zenéjével abból a sötét témakörből merít, ahonnan a Cirith Ungol-tól a Mayhem-ig, a Bathory-tól a Children of Bodom-ig, a doom-os HM-től a black/death irányzatokig a stílusok nagyjai széles e világon szívesen vesznek ihletet. Helyette jeges esőként hullik ránk a sok-sok szisztematikus (monotonitása ellenére sem unalmas) dallam. A zene lüktetése általában a jellegzetesen lassabb ének ritmusa alá támaszt.

Ezután kezd atmoszferikus dallamaival (mintha a Metallica One-ját gyakorolná) a Halls of Winter Gods. A When the Proud Die-ban nyilvánvalóvá válik, hogy az angol dalcímeknek megfelelően valóban, teljes terjedelmében angolul halljuk a lemezt. A zengő basszus felett csembaló hangzással kísért minimál-líra éppen azelőtt ér véget, hogy elunnám. A hatodik Snow Storm-ban a károgás a mélyen gurgulázó doomos/gothicos énekre vált és a lassan áradó gitár, a felette domináló orgona hangja mellett az a szárazon szűrt szöveg felelget a mély hangra.

Eddig ez a legérdekesebb nóta. A felénél a dobogó ütemre váltva izgalmasabbá is válik a dal és mondhatni már jellegzetesen fordul kaleidoszkóposon csilingelő hangokkal díszített orgonazenébe. Itt hallom jól milyen játékos a basszus. A nyolcadik dal a For the King! visszatér a szerző másik kedvenc témájához, a történelmi témákba ágyazott rettenethez. A négyes egységek végén pergető dob akkor hallatszik jól, amikor a kaotikus, diszharmonikus billentyűs zene alábbhagy és teret enged a basszusnak a ritmusgitárral. Az instrumentális Battle Glory viszont jól énekeltető dallammal indul, a Subway to Sally bármely lemezén elférne.

Színfolt a lemezen, mondom, mire jön a Daughter of Imir. A károgó ének kiváló ritmussal festi érdekessé a számot. A bevezetőben hallott nevetgélés újra a sokszor ismételt orgonahangokba fullad. A megfelelő arányban előre-hátra tolt sávokban megszólaló hangszerek szinte a dal végéig érdekesek. épülő Kill to Survive ezer effekttel, farkasüvöltéssel meg-megszakított üveghangú dallamokkal, angyali háttérkórussal indul. A szibériai farkas, meglehet emberi alakot öltve elkerülve Piroskát, belép a sötét kunyhóba, ott hatalmas rumlit csinál – így képzelem. A felgyorsuló zene egy újabb billentyű futammal gazdagodik, és furcsán keverednek a mollos alapdallamra játszott dúros motívumok. A károgó és mély torkú recsegő vokál kétszólamú éneke, az ismét újabb billentyű dallam, majd a lekerekítetten dübörgő dobok új dinamikát adnak a nótának. Visszatér a negyedik sorában szinte fals billentyű, nyers gitár vijjog…

Jelen formájában megbízható háttérzene a szimfonikus black metal kedvelőinek.

The king of Synthetic Symphonic Black Metal is back with a new full-length album, the eight, just one year after the previous was released, out on Grimm Distributions (a division of Satanath Records), and a label I haven't heard of until now, Gravacoes Tunguska. I often review SiN's work, and to be honest if at first I was skeptical about it, about its potential to convince the nowadays listener, I grew into really liking all his work. After receiving the new album I had a curiosity and went online to see how others think of SiN's work, and not little was my surprise to see all this appreciation and praise of his music, it means many, many more people started to like this type of very synthetic (all instrumental part is programmed instead of executed on real instruments I believe, or at least that's how it sounds like) Symphonic Black Metal that could have been something not usual but not surprising, in the mid '90's when keyboards were at their incipient phase in this style, but nowadays when there are so many possibilities it's almost impossible to find similar music out there. The truth is SiN's ability in creating very catchy, mysterious, dark sounding keyboard atmospheres is outstanding, and that's Astarium's highlight, its keyboard work, but other than that the song writing is good as well, clever and tension building, not at all boring or linear, with a ton of twists and turns where the listener is always surprised with something new. Basically all what I said above can easily apply to Astarium's new album, too, with the mention that it is getting better and better as time goes by, so if you're familiar with SiN's work so far you can be sure this new album won't disappoint you, and if you haven't heard of Astarium so far go check it out, you might have a big surprise; one thing if for sure, one either loves it, or hates it, there's no middle ground here.

Back in 2017 I reviewed my latest encounter with ASTARIUM. I expect more of the symphonic bombastery that my previous encounter offered. I don’t know why but I expect this to be in the same league as Limbonic Art at their greatest moment. I just get that sort of vibe. Perhaps I expected too much because this is not as symphonic or bombastic as I thought it would be. I am sorry to say so but this is rather dull. It feels like it is ambient even though it has guitar and drums. I cannot see myself listening to this too often. For me it is the vocals that kill much of the joy listening to this. But also that it isn’t as OTT as I would have wished for.

I have reviewed a couple of older Astarium records in the past. I believe Hyperboea is 8th album of this project already. The band plays black metal with use of keyboards instrument on a bigger scale. As I remember it, this one man project does not change much the way Astarium sounds, it`s still a home-made record with drum samplers, and production quality that has not changed drastically over the years, but some.

Home-made records has its limitations when comes to producing the environment for the music. All guitars sound is very murky on this album, drums were not played by real person, which is kind of discomfort if you want to convey more organic feel into the music. Quality wise, I do not complain of how this album sounds, it`s just niche representation of musical vision by the band. More positive side of semi-professional recording as perhaps this one is, are vocals for example. Those in depth black/death metal shrieks sound pretty rough and original in songs of Astarium, just as when you recording them in real time. I could say the same about all other instruments that had been tracked down in Hyperborea, you get a raw black metal songs from the band with some effects added to the original sound. Most impressive for me are keyboard orchestrations, like older Dimmu Borgir or Cradle Of Filth...More darkness, more bombastic arrangements, more music diversity when you hear those well performed keyboard passages. Metal wise, this album is more in the vein of Graveland - song For The King!, with those war-battlefield effects, for sure is. As long as it is very harsh sounding black metal record, there are also melodic, pagan, folky, very naturally expressed songs of the band.

Astarium 2020 is the band having better music flow now, better vision of how songs should be composed like. Basically, Sin (all music performance) develops his song writing the way that Astarium, technically and musically becomes a wiser band than it was in previous years.

I have always had appreciations to the music of this project, and something inside me tells me that Hyperborea is Astarium`s finest album to date – if I am wrong, then there are just better songs yet to come or to discover.

Being inspired by the combative spirit and the pristine wilderness of his homelands, being the region of Novosibirsk, Nikolay ‘SiN’ created an eighth full-length that goes on in the vein of the past. Active since 2005, Astarium did create an own approach of Atmospheric Ambient Black Metal; but I’ll go deeper into the matter immediately. First some details about this album’s administration.

About everything on this new album was done and created by SiN himself: song-writing (with exception of two tracks) and lyrics, performance of guitars, voices and programming, sampling, even the layout (photography included) and (cover) artwork. Hyperborea clocks almost forty-seven minutes and gets released on compact-disc, i.e. a jewel-case CD with eight-page booklet, which includes the lyrics (in English) and some mushroomy pictures. The material was written over a period of several years, and eventually finished and independently released in 2019. The physical version is now available via a partnership of the Portuguese label Gravações Tunguska and Ukraine-based GrimmDistribution. Some former releases, by the way, were released via Symbol Of Domination Productions, which is, together with GrimmDistribution, part of the Satanath Records household, in case you might care.

Anyway, those trusted with this project will know what follows, for Astarium go on with that characteristic own-interpreted approach, being a symphonic, theatrical and ambient form of Black Metal. Hyperborea convincingly follows the former efforts (at least this refers to the structure, interpretation and execution of the material); why changing a winning team anyway. It surely is a blackened form of Metal, with a strongly guitar-based center to start with. The compositions are very melodious, with atmospheric and epic guitar leads and some tremolo riffing to start with. These melodies have a grotesque, sometimes even dramatic attitude (attention: not of the melancho-depressive kind at all!), including more than a couple of eccentric, even exuberant leads and soloing. One would even call it ‘progressive’, but not as in ‘Prog Metal’ or so, yet rather seen from a unique slightly-experimental point of expression.

But two other aspects too typify that Astarium sound: the vocals and the keyboards. When talking about the latter, those keyboards, well, they are an enormously important element to define this project’s technique. Throughout each single track, the whole of the album, the synths represent a specific line of action, whether it be heroic, cosmic, orchestral or ambient. Sometimes they are at the background, identifying epic or sensitive topics, then again they create a structure both bombastic and symphonic, medieval or folksy (FYI: hints of Pagan / Folk are part of the concept for sure), or rather painting atmospheres of integrity and intimacy. But for sure, the whole of the time these keyboards to give a specific trademark to Astarium’s adventurous performance. In a comparable line I would like to refer to the use of some samples (voices and found sounds from Mother Nature, howling wolves, elements whatsoever) too, carefully represented yet, when used, deeply focusing on the identity of the song’s concept.

The voice of SiN is not exactly ‘usual’, even-though it isn’t that weird either. Instead of hysterical shrieks, soar of high-pitched screams or some deep-growling throat, he combines somewhat rattling voices and rasping speech. It gives the whole a narrative dimension, which fits well with the epic tale-telling and lyrics. Especially the (few) long-stretched roars are remarkable, combined with that scenic expression. Northern lands, pride and revenge, glory and gloom, it’s all part of the aural journey.

The rhythm section (rhythm six-string and four-string guitars + programmed percussion-work) works very well, for it does lift up the nature and the essence of the outcome. It is because of the well-balanced mix especially, I guess, that this does work so righteous. As said, the guitar leads, the keyboards and the vocals are what characterizes the sound of Astarium, but it gets fortified so organically by that rhythm segment in combination with the rough-edged yet fine stability in production / mix.

A not that unimportant detail to add is this. Hyperborea consists of not less than sixteen (individual) titles, but there is a steadfast cohesion for sure. Many excerpts are shorter (instrumental) interludes that organically work as ‘glue’ to make the whole concept sound like one firm sonic adventure.
