Vuonna 1995 perustettu suomalainen black/horror metal -yhtye Gloomy Grim julkaisee 20. lokakuuta uuden EP:n ”Obscure Metamorphosis”. Yhtyeen kokoonpano on muuttunut vuonna 2016 julkaistun albumin ”The Age Of Aquarius” jälkeen uuden kitaristin ja rumpalin myötä, ja nyt alkuperäisjäsenen, vokalisti Agathonin luotsaama yhtye lupaileekin jotakin aivan uutta. EP:n kaikki kitararaidat soittaa vuonna 2016 yhtyeeseen liittynyt Micko Hell, sillä toinen kitaristi Kim Lappalainen liittyi Gloomy Grimiin vasta EP:n äänitysten jälkeen.

EP:n aloittava ”Crawling Saviour” on tehokas avausraita, josta löytyy paljon elementtejä vanhan kansan black metalista. Kolmas kappale ”The Lord Of Light” on mahtavaa nyrkinpuinti- ja moshausmateriaalia, joka toimii EP:n kappaleista varmasti parhaiten livenä. Pään nytkähtelyä on vaikea estää biisin menevää kertosäettä kuunnellessa. EP:n päättävä ”Impressive Physical Sight” on EP:n neljästä kappaleesta paras.

”Obscure Metamorphosis” -EP:n jokainen kappale on hyvä. EP tuntuu jollain lailla Gloomy Grimin aiempaa tuotantoa aggressiivisemmalta, ja vokalisti Agathonin murinoissa on tuttuja, loistavan pimeitä ja raakoja vivahteita. Neljän kappaleen kokonaisuus pysyy hyvin kasassa, eikä lähde sivuraiteille. Jään innolla odottamaan, mitä uudistunut Gloomy Grim tarjoaa tulevaisuudessa.

On October 20th GrimmDistribution (Ukraine) and MurdHer Records (Italy) will release a new EP by the Finnish symphonic black metal band Gloomy Grim entitled Obscure Metamorphosis, and today we present the second track in the EP’s running order, “Stars Above Me“.

This makes the third year in a row when we’ve premiered music off different releases by this band, but a few words of introduction might still be warranted for those who are encountering their music for the first time.

The band first took shape in the mid-’90s as the solo project of vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Agathon. Since then, Gloomy Grim evolved into a full band and have released six albums, the last of which was 2016’s The Age of Aquarius, as well as a couple of compilations and one previous EP. There have been line-up changes, but Agathon has remained steadfast at the center of the band’s music, which has consistently been inspired by horror movies and their soundtracks, as well as by the darkness of life in general.

This new EP is itself described as “a kind of movie without a picture”. The music and lyrics are all related to each other, and the music evolves as the story does, so that listening to the EP as a whole, with your mind supplying the imagery, is the best way to experience it.

Nevertheless, only one song is what we have for you at the moment. You can imagine the twinkle of stars above in the opening seconds of the track, but those glimmering tones are soon replaced by an ominous storm surge of bone-breaking percussion, bleak, gale-force guitars (which begin to vibrate with a dismal resonance), and vicious vocal howling.

The mystical reverberations from the opening reappear as a prelude to a more stately and perilous passage in which sweeping symphonics and a different, roaring vocal expression lend the music an air of frightening majesty, which in turn gives way to sounds of increasing intensity, combining sensations of delirium, desolation, and agony.

Finland's  Gloomy  Grim  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  that  continues  the  symphonic  style  of  black  metal  from  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  ep  "Obscure  metamorphosis"  which  was  released  as  a  joint effort  between  Symbol  of  Domination  Productions  and  Murdher  Records.

A  very  dark  and  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  that  also  get  very  deep  and  grim  at  times  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard.

A  great  amount  of  melody  can  also  be  heard  in  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  fast  riffs  also  adding  in  some  tremolo  picking  and  later  songs  also  bring  in  more  symphonic  elements  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

On  this  recording  Gloomy  Grim  remains  true  to  the  symphonic  style  of  black  metal  from  previous  releases,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Anti  Christianity,  Satanism,  Horror  and  Darkness  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Gloomy  Grim  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  enjoy  this  ep.

THE LORD OF LIGHT interessanter.

Bekannt deshalb, weil ich bereits ihr 2016er Album „The Age of Aquarius“ vorstellen durfte (wollte!).

Also anhören.

Evil never dies ... not Finland's black metal stalwarts Gloomy Grim anyway. Desecrating all things that are holy, it's time for a new four-song EP release from these guys, which carries the title Obscure Metamorphosis.

The band seems to get better over the years, still relying strongly on their darkened, genuinely evil and mid-paced black metal approach. The wide use of keyboards to create chillingly haunting and morbid soundscapes has always worked for them and the use of keys is also remarkable on this album. "Impressive Physical Sight" sends some chills down your spine with its very creepy atmosphere; the song would work as a perfect soundtrack for an evilness-oozing horror film and "Stars Above Me" would be the second-best contender to take that role. Other than that, Gloomy Grim have always been following their own twisted path musically, not really caring of what may happen around them.

https://thepitofthedamned.blogspot.com/2019/03/gloomy-grim-obscure-metamorphosis.html

Blood, Monsters, Darkness, Life? , Written in Blood... А «The Age of Aquarius» выходил в 2016 на Satanath Records и Murdher Records, о чем был соответствующий отклик )).

Boy, 20 years on from Blood, Monsters, Death…and these oddball Finnish symphonic black metallers are still dropping ’em out on a fairly regular schedule.

This one’s a four track EP, “Agathon’s” vocals are raspier and rawer than you’ll remember and the guitars are more in your face and aggressive, while those patented creepy children’s nightmare style keyboards are relegated to background punctuation at best…a bare minimum of the one element that always made these guys stand out from the crowd.

Even so, you’ll be unlikely to confuse Obscure Metamorphosis with the latest Marduk or Watain album, or even anything else hailing from the ever-interesting Finnish black metal scene.  If there ever was an ersatz heir to King Diamond’s brand of spookshow satanism, Gloomy Grim is it.

Never really have a bad word for these guys, and this one doesn’t change that status one bit.

Two years and something after their last full-length studio album (The Age Of Aquarius, Satanath Records and Murdher Records), Finnish cult-horde Gloomy Grim returns with a new recording. In the meantime, there also was a compilation, compiling both first demos (Fuck The World, War Is War!, Symbol Of Domination Productions and Murdher Records). Once again released via Murdher Records and, this time, GrimmDistribution (together with Satanath Records and Symbol Of Domination Productions, GrimmDistribution forms one cohesive partnership), Obscure Metamorphosis is a mini-album with four rather short pieces. The compact disc comes in an edition of 500 copies with an eight-page booklet that includes the lyrics.

Agathon and his crew recorded these four new songs at Hellhouse Studio (with Micko Hell, who also played all guitars on this album), except for the drums (performed by Agitator). These ones were recorded at the UG Studio (just like the album’s mix).

Those trusted with the sonic presence of this outfit from the Land of a Thousand Lakes do know that Gloomy Grim trespass the limitative borders of the Black Metal scene. That was the case more than twenty years ago, and this still counts. Take opener Crawling Saviour, for example, being a monstrous epic with a harsh rhythm section, wonderful leads (tremolo riffs and solos), a huge variety in speed (with fast and f*cked-up excerpts and low-tuned decelerations), mesmerizing melodies and varying vocals. The rhythm expresses the misanthropic, even isolationistic attitude behind this great opening song.

Stars Above Me is quite mysterious, with a mesmerizing lead melody, pounding rhythm support and orchestral passages. This pessimistic and negative track acts like an Inner Eye, looking at futility, despair and the meaningless of human life. Damn, what an aural experience. Welcome, Age of Aquarius!

The Lord Of Light, the third opus on this mini-album, is a nasty, filthy one. In a morbid way, it thrashes, leaving no air to breathe, no portal to escape. Incredible it is, such diversification in just a couple of minutes, yet executed in a mostly organic and cohesive manner.

The conceptual recording ends with Impressive Physical Sight, which starts with a cool bombastic-orchestral introduction. It is a very intense, overwhelming track with excellent drum patterns, great riffs, appropriate synths, the usual screams and growls, and once again, a huge dose of variation in structure and tempo.

In its totality, Obscure Metamorphosis is a very firm and coherent sonic journey, focusing on man’s physical place on Mater Terra and the confrontation with the absurdity of our existence. Humanity is just a small passage through time, but it’s a disastrous and pathetic passage for sure. This EP gives you that impressive physical sight in order to levitate and see yourself without a shell.

For the longest of times I thought I knew what GLOOMY GRIM was all about. Then I heard their music and I felt like I had cheated myself out of a good band by not having checked them out. But to me GLOOMY GRIM was one of the big Finnish hyped black metal bands back in the days and that is why I ignored them. Now I know better. This is really good black metal at the heavier end of things. This is an EP and as such it is not enough but it does tue us over until we get a new full length album.

The latest EP of the Finnish horror metal dealers encompasses four blood-soaked pieces with circa 14 minutes of playing time. The recording musicians were as follows: Agathon (voice & keyboards), Micko Hell (guitars), Nukklear Tormentörr (bass) and Agitator (drums). Musically the Suomi horde plays black metal a la Dimmu Borgir, Hecate Enthroned and Cradle of Filth. However, with darker approach and more ripping sound production. So unlike the before mentioned bands Gloomy Grim is of the underground sort with big accent on the raw solutions within their musical repertory. Their songs are mainly about mid-tempos with ethereal keyboard hooks that at times are getting a militant-like marching vibe. The lyrical content is enough variegated as well, it touches death, hypocrisy, misanthropy, Lucifer and metempsychosis. For better transparency I am leaving you the song titles here: "Crawling Saviour", "Stars Above Me", "The Lord of Light", "Impressive Physical Sight". Let's hope this EP was just kind of an appetizer before the band's forthcoming 7th full-length album.

This EP presents Gloomy Grim as a band without any barriers that could not be broken in black metal. Obscure Metamorphosis consists of four songs that they approach differently.

Music is a bit unsettling, maybe it`s because the album sounds in depth, and has guitar tracks that do not sound linear which just tease my imagination the way I like: discovering more details in black metal is more enjoyable when music is a bit structured.

Dark, catchy melodies in The Lord Of Light, marching-refrain rhythm, lyrics and overall chemistry that is captured in this track, hooked me immediately. For me, it`s best song of this release that has natural, raw black metal force that is driving this track.

Other, like Impressive Physical Sight, has synths-guitar tending-orchestrations, like Dimmu Borgir, just with less use of synthesizers, so they sound more metal than symphonic.

Vocal expressions in the EP vary, which depends on music leads and mood of the song. Agathon - a singer of the band, he always sounds extreme, and has good feeling of music itself so his vocals sound well fitted in and confident.

Crawling Saviour is about guitar harmonies, melodic leads, balance between slower and faster moments with always great sounding black and death metal vocals (in some parts of songs Agathon sings similarly to  David Vincent).

Stars Above Me is the quintessence of heavy guitar riffs and high pitched guitar shreds, very grim. Ambience moments are very atmospheric but not bombastic. Just mind you that it`s not much about speed in this release from Gloomy Grim, those Finns are doing just fine, at every music pace they offer in Obscure Metamorphosis.

With a name like Gloomy Grim it is understandable that GrimmDistribution would pick the Finns up. This is an impressive release that both cheats the band and the listener with only four tracks running just short of a quarter of an earthly hour. The four tracks on show are impressive instances of doom/death/black and, with a good hint of Finnish doominess, also draw inspiration from the likes of Asphyx, Necrophobic and non-punky Darkthrone. The synthesizers are here – the band is Finland-based and cannot escape its genes – but is used more as effect as opposed to instruments thankfully. The Lord Of Light incorporates a short noisy solo. The result is four tracks of heavy as lead pounding metal with deep growls for vocals and tempos that run the gamut. Impressive Physical Sight is the least impressive owing to its obvious and simplistic riffing, but all four songs are bound to create a chemical reaction in the underground maven. More of the same please.

Gloomy Grim is a Finnish Symphonic Black Metal band, most likely one of the first of its kind considering that it was created in 1995. Since then and up to their, sadly, untimely pause that is still in effect, they have released a grand total of three Demos, two EP’s and six Full-length releases. The most recent of these, released a mere year before Agathons health required the band to go on hiatus is an EP entitled Obscure Metamorphosis and is, quite simply, a four-track long proof that mixing heavy melodies and a symphonic approach with a Black Metal mindset is, indeed, both possible and somewhat viable.

While Gloomy Grims chosen approach does mean that the traditional ‘gritty’ and dirty sound normally considered a staple of nineties Black Metal is not present, they have instead managed to add a continuous, albeit variable, flow to their music, with rising and lowering intonations as well as a change of instruments in the foreground in different intervals – All of which merging together to create a rather interesting take on Black Metal. Definitely not bad, and not unlike what Dimmu Borgir strived to be back in the day (although with a clear Finnish touch that I cannot seem precisely pinpoint).

Even if this ends up being the last album from Gloomy Grim in quite a while, I would like to point out that it is a very decent album – It might be a bit short (four tracks adding up to thirteen minutes in total), but that is almost always the case when it comes to EP’s. And given the reason, I would not dream of holding it against them. Most definitely recommended for fans of early Dimmu Borgir – and partially, fans of Bal-Sagoth.
