Originally the solo project of musician Dimon’s Night, the Greek band Humanity Zero produced six albums between 2008 and 2013 — one per year. But four years have separated the last one from the seventh album that’s now on the verge of release, and the passage of time has produced some significant changes in sound. Where previous recordings embraced death metal in the vein of such bands as Death, Hypocrisy, Unleashed, Nile, and Immolation, the new full-length Withered In Isolation takes a turn in a more doom-dominated and atmospheric direction, as reflected in the song we’re premiering today — “Horrendous Growls“.
On this new album Dimon’s Night is joined by vocalist Johnie Panagiotidis (aka Giannis Grim) (who does indeed possess a horrendous growl), lead guitarist Baggelis Vee Kappa, and violinist Stelios. Together they have given birth to a beast of pain.
The dimensions of “Horrendous Growls” range from craggy doom riffs to high spectral notes, from double-bass rumbles to grieving guitar melodies, from darting chords to the slow, soulful laments of a violin. And while the gait of the rhythm is mainly mid-paced, in keeping with the aching desolation of the song’s mood, it spills over into an increasingly frenzied guitar solo, giving an edge of derangement to this solemn dirge.
The death metal hasn’t been banished — it’s still a heavy song — but elements of classic doom are ever-present, with the album as a whole drawing influenced from such bands as My Dying Bride, Tiamat, Amorphis, Katatonia, and Ophis.
Withered In Isolation will be co-released on June 27th by the two Russian labels, Satanath Records and More Hate Productions. The track list follows, along with pre-order and social media links. Gli Humanity Zero sono un gruppo greco, precisamente di Atene, formato nel 2002 da Dimon’s Night prima come one-man-band, poi in seguito si sono aggiunti anche gli altri membri, diventando una band a tutti gli effetti. Fanno un Death Metal vecchio stampo, in stile Nile, Death, Immolations, Hypocrisy, ecc... dove abbordano temi come il nichilismo, la morte ed il disgusto verso la vita e verso il mondo intero. Hanno all’attivo l’impressionante palmares di 8 full-length realizzati in soli 8 anni, dal 2008 fino al 2017, dopo una lunga pausa di riflessione e una accurata preparazione delle composizioni e delle idee. Con l’ultimo album “Withered in Isolation”, registrato nel 2017, la band ha fatto veramente colpo non solo sui suoi fedeli ascoltatori, ma anche sul pubblico che preferisce il Doom Metal, in quanto nell’album hanno presentato una musica diversa, insolita per questa band, molto lenta e triste, con delle sonorità molto oscure, atmosfere cupe ed allo stesso tempo ree. Un sound tetro, lento, solenne, contornato da un’atmosfera piena di amarezza e decadenza. Tra i punti di riferimento possiamo citare i Paradise Lost, i My Dying Bride, Tiamat e simili. Insomma, ogni dettaglio dell’album è un omaggio agli anni ’90, cominciando dal processo di composizione, molto buona, e finendo con la produzione ottima che conferisce all’ascoltatore un vero piacere durante l’ascolto dell’album.
Le chitarre dal taglio metallico fungono da contraltare alla disperata melodia delle tastiere e dei violini molto presenti, che alternano momenti limpidi ad altri più duri ed aggressivi. Buona anche la batteria, molto cadenzata e molto pomposa, come anche il growl particolarmente reo e profondo, che accentua sempre di più l'oscurità dei brani, creando l'atmosfera di un viaggio lungo ed effimero in una selva oscura e senza vita, dove le anime condannate all’eterno castigo aspettano, fra pianti e lamenti, la loro crudele penitenza. Belle anche le parti di chitarra clean che rende le sonorità e l’atmosfera ancora più triste e più nostalgica. Con lo scorrere dei brani, emerge la sensazione di un costante senso di abbandono che rischia di diventare monotono, ma nonostante il Doom/Death Metal possiede precise caratteristiche, direi che alla band non manca la capacità di uscire dagli schemi canonici e variare la proposta con elementi di Funeral Doom o Neoclassic. Per una band che ha fatto da sempre Old School Death Metal è tutto fatto nel dettaglio, anzi tutto è fatto ad opera d’arte, mai noiosi e mai eccessivamente ripetitivi, dimostrando maturità nelle soluzioni per quanto riguarda la composizione e la scelta delle sonorità e del sound, cercando di dare l’equilibrio giusto fra le emozioni proposte, rendendo l’idea dello stile in maniera molto consona.
Tutto sommato, possiamo dire che gli Humanity Zero hanno fatto veramente colpo con questo gioiello raro, in quanto sono riusciti e riusciranno ad accaparrarsi tanti fan del Death/Doom Metal, e questo lavoro va sicuramente assaggiato ed assaporato lentamente, in unisono con i ritmi presenti nel album, cercando di goderci fin all’ultimo le tracce molto coinvolgenti e stravolgenti, piene di strazio, vuoto e solitudine eterna.

Do you think that playing an Old School sound with unconventional elements is possible ? Humanity Zero is a proof that yes it is.
The greek band is founded in 2003 but we have to wait until 2008 for their first record, even if the next ones weren’t late. Today, it’s Withered In Isolation that Dimon’s Night (drums, guitar, keyboards), Vaggelis Vee Kappa (lead guitar), Stelios (violin) et Giannis Grim (voice) present. A wise mix of Doom Death and Old School Death Metal with ambient and melancholic parts. This tempting blend starts now.
The greeks decided to start with Withered In Scars’ slow riffs. An instant sink into the band’s universe that allows us to discover Giannis’ tortured voice that perfectly fits to this heavy vibe, but they don’t even have a single hesitation to include double kicks parts. We continue with Away From The Light and its disturbing violin. If the band plays an Old School sound, this track has another dimension. The song is really catchy, and we can barely see that it’s near from the end. The band unveils once their ambient side again with Reveries Of My Stained Mind and its keyboards that walks with us for the whole track.
If the band isn’t violent enough for you, my advice is to wait until Fading In A Cryptic Obscurity and its warlike drum that charms you for sure. After the middle of the song, a solo comes to interrupt all this darkness to finally come back to it, while the voice is way more plaintive on Solitary Confinement. The end of the song focuses on a technical part, whereas Horrendous Growls and rhythm part easily leaches into your mind.
The clean voice on the beginning of Blood Redemption can scare, making us once again at a slow track, but don’t worry, tempo will increase quickly while riffs become worrying. The Dungeon highlights the bass sound that roars more than ever, while Vaggelis’ job is to mesmerise us before the final assault. The record’s last track, Premonition, is also the longest one. During more than eight minutes, the band stuns us with a melancholic rhythm sound sublimated by a keyboard that never stops, even during fast parts. We can easily feel the Old School vibe thanks to those simple but effective riffs.
Those three years of rest allow to Humanity Zero to pick out in their internal resources to create some riffs full of sadness. I didn’t know the band before, but I can assure you that My Dying Bride fans will love them as much as Morbid Angel fans.

Humanity Zero are a band from Greece that plays a mixture of doom and death metal and this is a review of their 2017 album "Withered In Isolation" which was released as a joint effort between Satanath Records and More Hate Productions.
A very dark, heavy and melodic doom metal sound starts off the album along with all of the musical instruments having a very powerful sound to them and after awhile death metal growls are added onto the recording while the music is very heavily rooted in the 90's and screams are also utilized at times and also add in a touch of black metal.
When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are done in a very dark yet melodic fashion while spoken word parts are also used briefly and some songs also add in a small amount of stringed instruments and as the album progresses the music gets more atmospheric along with some acoustic guitars being added into certain sections of the recording and some of the tracks are very long and epic in length and all of the music sticks to a very slow musical direction.
Humanity Zero plays an atmospheric style of doom/death metal that is very heavily rooted in the 90's, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover misanthropy, hate and nihilism themes.
In my opinion Humanity Zero are a very great sounding atmospheric mixture of doom and death metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band.

Восьмой (!) альбом греческой мало кому известной, в том числе и мне, дес метал группы Humanity Zero. О том, что это уже восьмой (а может даже и больше) альбом знает только циклопедия металлум.
Согласно имеющейся информации группа образовалась аж в 2002 году в качестве one (hand) man band для записи, естестенно, умопомрачительного дет митала. Однако ванмэн бэнд внезапно расширился до нормального состава, и вдруг через 6 лет начал плодоносить альбомами, год за годом, пока не стало понятно, что упорный труд не приносит ощутимых финансвоых плодов. Это конечно все мои домыслы, так как о группе я знаю ровно ничего, но судя по тому, что через семь лет активного выпускания альбомов эта самая активность прекратилась - это так.
Презентация говорит, что новый альбом разительно отличается от всего предыдущего материала, и это действительно так. На этом альбоме представлен не зубодробильнодебильный дет миталъ с фрутилупсообразной драм машиной, а медленно-мрачный дум дес со скрипкой, пианинами и фрутилупсообразной драм секцией.
Материал записан немного глуховато, и явно сводился своими силами. Медленный, мрачный ранний дум, местами напоминающий первый My Dying Bride и раннюю Anathema, а кое где Bolt Thrower эры вармастера и 4 крусейда, в медленных их местах. К тому же, на этом альбоме, судя по всему впервые засветились скрипка и пианино, как же без них на дум альбомах современности. Оба инструмента мне напомнили о некогда известной блэк с симфо уклоном группу Morgul и в частности альбомы "Horror Granduer" и следующий - "Sketch Of ...".
Послушал альбом раза три, не могу сказать, что альбом прям хитовый или крутой, но во всяком случае отторжения пока не вызвал, даже стал выделять некоторые интересные и запоминающиеся элементы. В целом конечно же долго слушать такую музыку мне сложновато, так как не смотря на наличие разных вставок музыка довольно однообразна. К тому же я четко слышу барабаны, забитые в какую то из программ или драм машину.
В целом, считаю релиз выданный российскими Satanath Records/More Hate не плохим и достойным ознакомления тем, кому нравится олдскульный дум дэт из 92-94 года. К тому же, судя по всему это первый официально изданный альбом группы, так как о других альбомах на каких либо носителях информации нет.

Capita che i gruppi non riescano a trovare la propria dimensione, che non abbiano consapevolezza dei propri mezzi e che nessuno glielo dica a tempo debito. Non c’è niente di male ad ammettere di non avercela fatta. C’erano una volta gli Humanity Zero, greci e inesorabilmente bulimici: dal 2008 al 2014 un disco all’anno, un mare di death metal che sulla carta voleva suonare come i Death di Human e Symbolic, ma che di fatto si risolveva in un ammasso di suoni non calibrati, velocità spropositate quando non ci voleva e rallentamenti poco convinti. Non tutto era marrone e maleodorante però. Ogni tanto usciva fuori qualche brano più a fuoco come nell’album In The Parade Of The Ungrateful. La nuova vita era iniziata nel 2014, con l’ormai penultimo e sorprendentemente buono ‘Execution Ground’, molto più violento e al sangue. Li trovate tutti in free download nella descrizione dei video Youtube caricati dagli HZ, non vi preoccupate.
Oggi con un gap temporale inusitato dalla precedente uscita abbracciamo la natura malefica di ‘Withered In Isolation’. Non mi aspettavo un album così doommeggiante e con melodie molto più lacrimose. Il growl alla Chuck Schuldiner è bello e andato. Siamo più dalle parti dei My Dying Bride (c’hanno il violino, tra l’altro, molto in evidenza) e dei primi Katatonia ora. C’è ancora qualcosa dei Death in sporadici stacchi di ‘Solitary Confinement’. Totale rivoluzione che è riuscita molto bene, forse un po’ tardiva, ma reale e di interesse sicuro per quelli che, anche sotto l’ombrellone o a una festa di paese, hanno il cuore avvizzito come una foglia in autunno. Gli Humanity Zero sono stati salvati per i capelli, forse dal cantante nuovo che li segue da un paio di dischi o forse dal destino dopo aver tappezzato Atene di annunci tipo “AAA cercasi sposa morente, questione di vitale importanza”. Speriamo che si possano confermare in futuro con maggiore incisività perché hanno un suono un po’ troppo gracilino in alcuni punti, bisogna irrobustirlo. Anche se il concetto stesso di futuro è molto effimero per un gruppo doom, lo riconosco.

i Humanity Zero sono un gruppo deathdoom metal proveniente dalla Grecia.
La loro discografia è composta da 8 album in studio, nessuna Demo, nessuno split e nessuna compilation in quasi 15 anni di carriera della band. Le loro canzoni fanno riferimento essenzialmente a quattro tematiche, ossia il nichilismo, la misantropia, l’odio e la morte. Il loro sound è caratterizzato da elementi graffianti, grezzi ma melodici allo stesso tempo che si discostano dal death nudo e crudo.
In questa recensione andremo ad analizzare il loro ultimo lavoro, ossia “Withered in Isolation”, prodotto e rilasciato dall’etichetta Satanath Records in data 27 giugno 2017.
Soffermiamoci ad osservare la copertina dell’album, la quale rappresenta una mummia con addosso un copricapo che pare velluto misto a sangue secco, avvolta nell’oscurità di una grotta o di una bara. Le braccia esili, calcificate dall’eterno riposo e raggrinzite dal tempo, sono unite a formare uno scudo dove le mani sono intente a tappare la bocca, come a bloccare un eterno lamento. Lo sguardo cieco e terrorizzato rende la copertina più inquietante e misteriosa.
Le canzoni presenti in questo album, nove in tutto, scandiscono la progressiva tumulazione del cadavere, dal momento di lucida follia mortale a quello che lo porta a confinarsi in una prigione fatta di oblio e desolazione. Infatti, se guardiamo bene i titoli di ogni canzone, il tutto suggerisce un’atmosfera dove si definisce l’excursus mortale di una persona in una lenta e melodica agonia dei sensi e della mente:
Withered In Scars -> appassito nelle cicatrici
Away From The Light -> lontano dalla luce
Reveries Of My Stained Mind -> fantasticherie della mia mente malata
Fading In A Cryptic Obscurity -> sbiadendo in una criptica oscurità
Solitary Confinement -> confinamento in solitudine

Blood Redemption -> redenzione del sangue

Premonition -> premonizioni
Anche il ritmo è progressivo ed ogni canzone è ben distinta da elementi melodici e growl sofferenti. Con riff ben strutturati e voce bilanciata in base al ritmo degli strumenti, il disco è piacevole all’ascolto e non annoia, in quanto il sound risulta eterogeneo e a tratti solenne ed imperioso.
Nel complesso si può definire un bell’album, molto bello ed elaborato, valido e assai fruibile dagli amanti del genere e da coloro che si preparano ad ascoltare del death metal dai toni funerei. Complessivamente si merita un 7 e un ascolto prolungato per poter percepire perfettamente il sound nelle sue sfumature.

Os Humanity Zero surgem-nos da Grécia, já com um longo historial, com "Withered In Isolation" a ser o oitavo álbum lançado desde 2008, o que é uma média bem alta. A dúvida que nos assalta será de verificar se a média no que diz respeito à qualidade também é alta. Conforme mergulhamos neste trabalho, percebemos que o seu foco é o death/doom clássico, lembrando-nos os primórdios de bandas como Anathema, Paradise Lost ou My Dying Bride. Arranjos simples e melodias de guitarra solo bastante convincentes fazem com que este álbum surja como uma agradável surpresa. De tal forma que nos dá vontade de verificar o resto da já longa discografia da banda grega.

Το καλοκαίρι σιγά σιγά αρχίζει να μας αφήνει, δίνοντας τη θέση του στο τσουχτερό φθινόπωρο, ενώ οι μέρες έχουν ήδη αρχίσει να μικραίνουν. Και μπορεί αυτός ο καιρός να είναι κάπως μελαγχολικός και να σε ρίχνει, όμως είναι ο πλέον κατάλληλος για το άκουσμα δίσκων που ανήκουν στο πιο καταθλιπτικό φάσμα της metal. Ένας από αυτούς τους δίσκους είναι και η όγδοη κατά σειρά κυκλοφορία των Αθηναίων Humanity Zero, ένα συγκρότημα που σχηματίστηκε το 2003 από τον Δημήτρη Σακκά (Dimon’s Night), ως one-man-band. Μέχρι σήμερα έχουν γίνει πολλές αλλαγές στη σύνθεση της μπάντας, με διάφορους καλλιτέχνες να έρχονται και να φεύγουν, ενώ από το 2008, που κυκλοφόρησε το ομώνυμο ντεμπούτο, έως το 2014 οι Humanity Zero έβγαζαν ένα δίσκο το χρόνο, με το φετινό, το “Withered in Isolation”, να έρχεται 3 χρόνια μετά από τον τελευταίο, το “Execution Ground”.
Αν αναρωτιέστε πώς είναι δυνατόν ένας δίσκος των Humanity Zero να είναι μελαγχολικός, μιας και οι Αθηναίοι είναι μία old-school Death Metal μπάντα, θα σας πω πως αυτή η απορία σας είναι εύλογη και θα σας τη λύσω άμεσα. Βλέπετε, το ότι η μπάντα κυκλοφόρησε δίσκο μετά από 3 χρόνια, αντί για το καθιερωμένο ένα χρόνο, δεν είναι η μόνη αλλαγή που επήλθε. Με το “Withered in Isolation” οι Humanity Zero έφυγαν από το Death και έκαναν στροφή προς το Doom / Death, στα χνάρια συγκροτημάτων όπως οι My Dying Bride, οι Paradise Lost, οι παλιοί Anathema, οι παλιοί Katatonia και οι παλιοί Tiamat.
Όσοι είστε στη συγκεκριμένη φάση, ξέρετε ακριβώς για τι πράγμα μιλάω. Για εκείνους που δεν έχουν εντρυφήσει τόσο στη συγκεκριμένη σκηνή, θα πω ότι κατά κύριο λόγο μιλάμε για αργές ταχύτητες, αλλά η ατμόσφαιρα δεν είναι τόσο ζοφερή και οι κιθάρες δεν είναι τόσο παραμορφωμένες, ώστε να βγάζουν ένα αποτέλεσμα που να βγαίνει από τα βάθη της Κολάσεως. Αντιθέτως, μιλάμε για μουσική που έχει τη βάση της στη μελωδία, που αναδύεται από τις κιθάρες, τα πλήκτρα, το πιάνο και το βιολί, που σε συνδυασμό με τις αργές ταχύτητες δημιουργείται ένα αποτέλεσμα που είναι μελαγχολικό, καταθλιπτικό και στενάχωρο. Όλα τα προαναφερθέντα όργανα συνεργάζονται αρμονικά ώστε όλα τα τραγούδια να κατακλύζονται από πολύ όμορφες μελωδίες που να δημιουργούν στον ακροατή μια γλυκιά μελαγχολία, ταξιδεύοντας τον πάνω από όμορφα μουσικά ηχοτοπία, χωρίς κάποιον συγκεκριμένο προορισμό. Τα τύμπανα από την άλλη ακολουθούν και αυτά την αργή πορεία των υπόλοιπων οργάνων, προσπαθώντας να συνεισφέρουν και αυτά στο πολύ ωραίο αρμονικό αποτέλεσμα. Βέβαια καμιά φορά παρεκκλίνουν της πορείας τους και με τη δίκαση ανεβάζουν κατακόρυφα την ένταση, δίνοντας έστω και για λίγο έναν πιο Death χαρακτήρα στη μουσική. Ένας χαρακτήρας που στο μεγαλύτερο μέρος του αντιπροσωπεύεται από τα σχεδόν brutal φωνητικά, τα οποία χρησιμοποιούνται από αρχή μέχρι τέλους, ανεξάρτητα από την ταχύτητα της μουσικής.
Τα 9 κομμάτια που απαρτίζουν το δίσκο και που εκτείνονται στα 51 λεπτά, είναι πραγματικά λες και πρόκειται για 9 καταθλιπτικά ποιήματα που σου προκαλούν μια γλυκιά στεναχώρια. Για εκείνους βέβαια που είναι λάτρεις της συγκεκριμένης σκηνής το “Withered in Isolation” δεν θα προσφέρει κάτι το καινούργιο, κάτι που δεν το έχουν ξανακούσει πριν. Δεν παύει όμως να πρόκειται για έναν πολύ όμορφο και λυρικό δίσκο, που θα μαγέψει εκείνους που θα τον ακούσουν. Η πρώτη στάση στην Doom / Death πορεία των Humanity Zero ήταν επιτυχημένη και δεν μένει από το να δούμε αν θα συνεχιστεί έτσι και στο μέλλον.

What a difference a few years makes. Humanity Zero were churning out a full length album on an annual basis since their first self titled release back in 2008. The Athenian album spurter Dimon’s Night, head honcho and only original member, has teamed up again with lead guitarist Vaggelis Vee Kappa and vocalist Johnie Panagiotidis (the artist formerly known as Giannia Necro-Scar) and have completely shaken the foundations of their death metal ethos to produce something a little bit different.
‘Withered In Isolation’ is a major left turn for the band as most of the straight up death metal elements have taken a back step and a more sombre and doom laden sound has come to prominence. The death growls from Johnie Panagiotidis are the most death metal akin parts which prevail throughput the album. Well, that and Dimon’s Night’s occasional burst into blasts and rapid fills which can appear and disappear within a moment’s notice.
The use of folk elements takes it a step further away from Humanity Zero’s roots. Songs such as ‘Away From The Light’ and ‘Fading In A Cryptic Obscurity’ uses violons for building a mournful sound that become all the more powerful when combined the harsh boom of vocals. The guitar lead work can be quite stellar at times with some, at times, psychedelic flurries of shifting notes and bends which are wrapped in a rich tone which heightens the atmosphere especially in ‘Horrendous Growls’.
Overall it is all a little unexpected but some moments are reminiscent of some of their earlier works. A major shift has occurred though but it is still a quality piece of music. Who knows if this is the future sound that Humanity Zero go for but I honestly don’t think that too many people would object if they did. They have written a highly dark, sorrowful and atmospheric piece of music which will resonate with those who love the deep feels that this album inspires.

I greci Humanity Zero hanno una storia piuttosto curiosa: nati agli albori del secolo come progetto solista di Dimon’s Night, dopo essersi trasformati in una band a tutti gli effetti hanno iniziato, dal 2008 in poi, a pubblicare un album all’anno (con puntualità più svizzera che ellenica) fino al 2014: tutti questi full length prendevano come punto di riferimento certo death metal tecnico e nel contempo brutale, partendo dai Death per arrivare agli Immolation, ma non credo con particolari riscontri se, fino ad oggi, il nome di questa band mi era del tutto ignoto.
L’ipotesi è suffragata dal fatto che, dopo un inusuale silenzio durato tre anni, gli Humanity Zero sono tornati con un volto del tutto diverso, spostando in maniera decisa il proprio sound verso il death doom e puntando il mirino questa volta sui My Dying Bride, soprattutto quelli con Martin Powell in formazione, ai quali l’accostamento si addice ancor più per l’utilizzo del violino suonato da Stelios.
Il ruolo del violinista è una novità nella formazione, così come quella vocalist Johnie Panagiotidis, mentre il leader (chitarra, batteria e tastiere) continua ad avvalersi alla chitarra solista di Vaggelis Vee Kappa: il risultato che ne scaturisce non è del tutto deprecabile, anche se manca della necessaria organicità.
In buona sostanza, all’interno dei cinquanta minuti di Withered in Isolation si palesano spunti interessanti ma che spesso paiono gettati lì senza un disegno preciso, andando ad accavallarsi con riff sovente rallentati come da copione, o che talvolta riprendono le accelerazioni di un tempo, e interventi di un violino che sicuramente si segnala come l’aspetto più peculiare e positivo nell’insieme: queste ultime caratteristiche riportano, in effetti, allo stile dei primi My Dying Bride, dei quali purtroppo gli Humanity Zero non possiedono la necessaria percentuale di talento compositivo.
In un album che guadagna la sufficienza, se non altro per una svolta stilistica mai scontata e a suo modo coraggiosa, all’interno di una tracklist delineata da una certa perfettibilità a livello sia esecutivo che di songwriting, si segnalano episodi validi come l’atmosferica Reveries of My Stained Mind e l’evocativa Solitary Confinement, ma anche un brano davvero sconclusionato quale Blood Redemption.
Per una band giunta al suo ottavo full length certi difetti potrebbero essere ineludibili, anche se concediamo agli Humanity Zero una prova d’appello visto il loro recente approdo al genere suonato in Withered in Isolation.

This week seems to go in the sign of doom because this Greek band will not win any speed records with their death metal. I don’t really mind. I am a huge fan of My Dying Bride and have been so ever since that first demo. So whenever I get to hear a doom death metal band it is like x-mas to me. And since HUMANITY ZERO have managed to create such a wonderful album I have no problem listening to this over and over again. This album has all the things that makes my heart tick a bit extra. The heaviness, the violin, the melancholy, the lot. Two thumbs up.

Там и оливки, и вино, и греческий салат, и отменный экстремальный метал в лице Septic Flesh, Rotting Christ, Astarte и многих других, но даже там можно вполне себе увять и засохнуть, если долго пробыть в изоляции и истязать себя олдскульным дэт-думом. Братки из Humanity Zero знают о такой возможности не понаслышке, ведь иначе зачем им было бы записывать такой диск, каким стал “Withered In Isolation”: сырой, ортодоксальный, эмоциональный, ностальгический и как будто выпавший из времени и пространства.
Пресс-релиз сравнивает пластинку с творчеством My Dying Bride, Tiamat, Amorphis, Katatonia и Ophis, и основания для этого на самом деле просто железные: греки на своём новейшем диске играют действительно очень канонично и атмосферно, напоминая раннее творчество всех упомянутых коллективов и не забыв даже про характерные для “брайдов” начала 90-х чарующие партии плачущей, словно жалующейся скрипки, однако, список параллелей будет неполным, если не упомянуть земляков Humanity Zero из On Thorns I Lay.
На массу характерных (в том числе и скрипичных!) ходов с таких знаковых релизов этих греков, как “Orama” и “Crystal Tears” натыкаешься, едва только отправляешься в плавание по лазерным дорожкам “Withered In Isolation”, но к чести наших героев стоит сказать, что их заимствования совершенно не напоминают плагиат, и происходит это по той простой причине, что их звучание отличается категорической прозрачностью и радикальной флегматичностью. Их музыка это slow doom в варианте, очень близком к самому хрестоматийному из всех возможных.
Даже по сравнению с “Crystal Tears”, не говоря уже про “Orama”, актуальное творение Humanity Zero выглядит очень приятно и ненавязчиво. Никаких прилипчивых мелодий, никаких заигрываний со слушателем и знойной клавишной ванили, даже не говоря о женском или чистом вокале – только сухой первобытный дэт-дум и больше ничего. При этом материал диска совсем не кажется примитивным или однообразным. На альбоме достаточно красивых мелодий, крепких риффов и запоминающихся ходов, а истинно греческий хриплый гроул хорошо гармонирует с ними.
Тексты в целом достаточно традиционны для данного жанра, но то и дело в них встречаются пытки, кровь, жажда убийства и несколько нетрадиционные построения предложений, которые хорошо запоминаются и делают прослушивание компакта ещё более интересным и даже незабываемым. Вот вам пример: “How Hard I Tried, How Badly I Ran, Impotent To Escape The Torment… ” (“Как усердно я старался, как сильно я бежал, но в деле спасения от пыток я – импотент”) – слышим мы в финальной “Premonition”, и мне для того чтобы крепко задуматься хватило уже этих двух строк (какая формулировка, однако, и ведь цепляет – обращает на себя внимание!)
Красивые соло и фоновые синтезаторные хоры в “Reveries Of My Stained Mind” напомнили мне The Gathering в те времена, когда Аннеке только-только присоединилась к ним, а “Fading In A Cryptic Obscurity” вызвала в памяти легендарных Winter. Пластинка совершенно не кажется мрачной, упадочной и угрюмой. Все вполне традиционные для такого тёмного и скорбного жанра клише у Humanity Zero как будто обрели новую жизнь – были переосмыслены и пущены по другим, нежели это было всегда, рельсам.
Как не вспомнить тут наших соотечественников из Suffer In Paradise, которые утверждают, что в думе нет ничего мрачного по определению, а сам он является всего лишь музыкой размышлений и рефлексии. Как раз такой рефлексией отлично заниматься под аккомпанемент рецензируемого альбома. Давно известно расхожее утверждение, что под классику хорошо и приятно думается, но “Withered In Isolation” в этом плане вполне может потягаться с Бахом, Бетховеном и Моцартом – мысли под их звуковые колебания так и роятся в голове! Вот такой вот “флеботомайзед”.

Замечательная команда из Греции, которая выпускала строго полноформаты. Так как камрады экстремально музицируют уже 14 лет, то пластинок у них вышло немало — 8 штук с сабжем включительно. Doom/Death Metal проецируют в этот мир музыканты и получается у них убедительно.
Вообще поговаривают, что один из участников стартовал этот проект как чисто сольный, one man, а в итоге все вышло по другому. Но так бывает часто, ибо даже и самый креативный музыкант, не может охватить весь спектр вопросов, которые возникают при создании качественного музыкального продукта. Странно, но к дум дэту это относится, как мне кажется, больше, чем к другим стилям. И потому в команде функционируют в итоге 4 человека, среди которых скрипач. Это прописано в буклете. И он вроде бы по всем признакам не сессионный, а полноправный член команды. Так что вангуйте чудеса. На всякий случай.
(Зачеркнуто две страницы) ... но крепкий олдовый дум дэт найдете. Олдовый — потому, что манера музыкального волшебства похожа на ту, которая применялась в подстиле в начальный период его бытования. Даже ощущения вы можете прогнозировать те же...
Вообще-то чуть ли не думом начинает Humanity Zero, неспешно закапывая позитив в зыбучие пески человеческого забвения. Гитарными риффами отстраивает мало приспособленные для жизни помещения, зато для гибели - как раз. И они, объемы, кажутся пустоватыми, не начиненными сложной фактурой. Как обманчиво это впечатление! Хотя после половины, струнники начинают заламывать сольные дела, трагичные и обличающие. И вокал... вокалист при делах, однако. Уже ближе к финалу компо появляются патетические клавиши, будто пианино сыграло на сабвуфер — интересно и выпукло.
Да... вокалист в группировке стильный, с добротным гроулингом, расщепленным, и очень спокойный в каждом своем движе. Суховатый, со злыми среднечастотными вибрациями, с подходящей гулкостью в вокале, и местами записанный - будто из пещеры вещает.
А скрипач появился сразу на траке 2, с мрачными риффами, инспирированными не то чтобы сказать классическим наследием, скорее ультра-темным настроением.
Вот - что случились далее — трэк был залит мелодической фактурой, здесь уж явно попахивало средневековым клавесином, по намерению будто бы выворачивающимся, выскальзывающим из нашей реальности.
Замечу, что большинство трэков по 5-6 минут, и только еще тройка по 8 и 9. Это намекает на то, что композеру нужно было реализовать свои идеи в ограниченном пространстве для выбранной стилистики. Мудрое решение для стиля, и желанное для тех, кто не кайфует от супердлинных компо. Ведь, сами понимаете, за небольшой отрезок времени раскрытие коллизии должно происходить достаточно оперативно. Иначе это и не песня будет. В этом и залог разнообразия альбома.
Музыкальная отрисовка идет скупым гитарным поливом, с суровой ритм-секционной графикой, а в треке 4 и барабанным боем, который занимает значительное место. Примечательно, что соло в некоторых местах вовсе не думовые, а значительно бодрее, - резкие и обращающие на себя внимание. Но конечно же трагического пафоса на альбоме хватает... И искать его не придется, зачастую он адово набит во все отверстия трэка. Хоть мелкими, но черными пометками. Понятно, что дэтовый концепт в стилистике - это не брутал дэт, а вещи помягче и поспокойнее, в нашем, естественно, смысле.
Вышеупомянутая экспрессивная скрипка напомнит о себе не раз и не два. А вот клавиши будут использованы и сольно, и как звуковые коллажи, развешанные на заднем фоне, и в том качестве очень важные и претенциозные.
Самый длинная композиция Premonition— крайняя на диске, почти целое кино, тактично заполнена саундтреками, клавишами - будто снятыми с фортепиано, гибельной риффовой работой, голосом вокалиста, задыхающегося в пароксизме чувств, и настроением разрывающего душу психотриллера.

"Humanity Zero", from Greece, brings "Withered in Isolation", a very well-conceived death-doom metal release. It sounds brutal and extreme without having an extreme death metal sound setting. Their power resides in the atmosphere instead of a brutal distortion. Guitar leads have some melancholic tunes, very well combined with some occasional violin and keyboard interventions, which are usually moderate along the album except for the last track, which has too much keyboard in it. Putting that track aside, it’s high-quality death-doom with a very personal sound.

Se per qualche motivo conoscete già gli Humanity Zero, creatura fondata nell'ormai lontano 2003 ad Atene dal polistrumentista noto come Dimon's Night, probabilmente li ricorderete come una band (forse anche troppo) dedita al death metal, che in "Execution Ground" (del 2014, prima opera con l'attuale cantante Giannis Grim) aveva iniziato a inserire qualche timido elemento doom.
L'ultima fatica "Withered In Isolation", pubblicata nel 2017 dalla onnipresente Satanath Records, segna un cambio di rotta chiariss... ops, scurissimo a partire dal logo e dalla copertina. Via le sanguinanti scritte degli album precedenti, via le fiamme dell'Inferno: ci lanciamo nell'oscurità assoluta propria del death-doom metal. Un'altra novità della formazione è l'ingresso del violinista Stelios, che nel suo primo lavoro con la band contribuisce ad avvicinarla all'ormai classico sound ispirato ai My Dying Bride.
Negli oltre cinquanta minuti di isolata putrefazione messi insieme dal quartetto greco, i fan del genere potranno riconoscere sostanzialmente tutti i tratti caratteristici della roba che tanto ci piace: dalla sofferenza growlata alle melodie di chitarra e violino che si intrecciano con le tastiere, dalle accelerazioni death ai testi incentrati sulla solitudine e sul buio (spiccano a mio avviso "Solitary Confinement" e "Blood Redemption").
Parlando da ascoltatore di death-doom metal, posso dire chiaramente che "Withered In Isolation" mi ha colpito di più dei lavori precedenti degli Humanity Zero, troppo legati a un tipo di death metal che non sembra avere molto altro da dire. Tuttavia, difficilmente il disco potrà ambire a qualcosa di più che trascinare qualche ascoltatore abituale di death metal verso gli abissi del doom, oltre chiaramente ad attirare l'interesse di chi proprio non riesce a fare a meno di gettarsi nella disperazione dell'ennesima band che fonde i due filoni.
Non sono rimasto particolarmente soddisfatto infine dai suoni della batteria e da alcune scelte (come il finale della già citata "Solitary Confinement"), mentre vanno decisamente meglio le chitarre e la voce.
In definitiva, con "Withered In Isolation" diamo il benvenuto agli Humanity Zero nel mondo delle tenebre, augurando loro di trovare una formula che possa farli spiccare in una scena sicuramente molto affollata.

If for some reason you already know Humanity Zero — founded in Athens back in 2003 by the multi-instrumentalist known as Dimon's Night — you might remember them as a band (perhaps a bit too much) fond of death metal, which had started inserting a few sparse doom metal elements in their latest work "Execution Ground" (2014, the first one with current vocalist Giannis Grim)
Their new effort "Withered In Isolation", released in 2017 via the omnipresent Satanath Records, marks a very clea... oops, dark change of direction, beginning with the logo and cover artwork. Off with the bloody writings of the previous records, off with the flames of hell: this time we delve deep into the utter darkness of death-doom metal. Another addition in the lineup is the violin player Stelios, that contributed to bringing the album closer to the classic sound inspired by My Dying Bride, in his first work with the band.
Here are more than fifty minutes of putrefaction put together by the Greek quartet, the fans of this specific genre will recognize pretty much all the main features of the stuff we like so much: from growled suffering to the guitar and violin melodies intertwined with keyboards, from the death metal accelerations to the lyrics focused on solitude and darkness (I believe the best two songs are "Solitary Confinement" and "Blood Redemption").
Speaking as a death-doom metal listener, I can definitely say that "Withered In Isolation" gave me something more than Humanity Zero's previous works, which were too tied to a style of death metal that I believe doesn't have that much to say anymore. However, it will be quite tough for this record to have a big impact apart from seducing some death metal listeners towards the abyss of doom, and of course attracting some interest from those who really can't live without throwing themselves into despair with another death-doom metal band.
I wasn't particularly impressed by the sounds of the drums and by several choices (such as the ending of the aforementioned "Solitary Confinement"), while things went much better in terms of guitars and vocals. In conclusion, with "Withered In Isolation" we can gladly welcome Humanity Zero to the world of darkness, wishing them to find a consistent formula that can help the band emerge in a pretty crowded scene.

Grande banda de Death/Doom Metal diretamente da Grécia, para fãs dos álbuns antigos do Sentenced, Tiamat, Edge of Sanity, Amorphis, Opeth, My Dying Bride, Katatonia, Paradise Lost, entre tantas outras bandas do início dos anos 90.
O Álbum tem toda uma atmosfera fria, melancólica, fúnebre, que vemos cada vez menos na cena underground atual, mas algumas bandas simplesmente resgatam aquele sentimento nostálgico, mágico e único daquela gloriosa época.
Cada nota musical desse artefato é de um belíssimo bom gosto, as letras são verdadeiros cultos ao isolamento e a misantropia.
Todos os intrumentos são muito bem executados, com destaques para a guitarra, teclados e vocais, que dão a maior parte do clima obscuro dessa obra, bateria e baixo cumprem muito bem o seu papel de dar o ritmo cadenciado e lento de grande parte dessas belas composições.

HUMANITY ZERO se forma en un principio como proyecto en solitario de DIMON´S NIGHT hace una década en Atenas, Grecia, y practicando un Old School Death Metal a lo HYPOCRISY, IMMOLATION o MORBID ANGEL. Poco a poco se van sumando miembros, se suceden los trabajos y cambios; un par de demos, un ep, y los álbumes "Life In Paradies" (2011); "2012" (2012); "Dehumanization" (2013) y "Execution Ground" (2014)... prácticamente a disco por año. Tras esto, la banda cambia de dirección y no es hasta 2017 que se marcan un discazo de Death/Doom de la vieja escuela que rezuma MY DYING BRIDE por los cuatro costados, no en vano se permiten incluso la adición en la formación de un violinista. Dicho lo cual, HUMANITY ZERO son:
Es curioso, pero es en Rusia donde la escena de Death/Doom romántico de toda la vida parece vivirse con más intensidad, y a la gran cantidad de proyectos sobre todo de Funeral hay que añadir una montaña de sellos que editan en formato físico. "Withered In Isolation", que es el disco del que os estoy hablando, se edita bajo coproducción de SATANATH RECORDS y MORE HATE PRODUCTIONS conservando el antiguo logo de la banda e incluyendo (esto me ha gustado muchísimo) un Obi a dos idiomas (ruso e inglés).
Nueve cortes en cincuenta minutos de doom ralentizado con partes vocales guturales y otras más melódicas, incursiones escasas pero efectivas de líneas de violín y una producción bastante acertada por los DIGIVISION RECORDS (BELARUS). El artwork es obra de ORESIVIOS y poca más información técnica puedo aportar.
Como he comentado más arriba, sonoridad casi calcada en algunos cortes a MY DYING BRIDE pero con algo de los primeros AMORPHIS. Sinceramente, es un disco que me ha pillado por sorpresa y es que salvo excepciones actuales como OPHIS, SPECTRAL VOICE o SWALLOWED pues pocas bandas ya consiguen sorprenderme, aunque sea haciendo algo que se ha hecho mil veces. La fantástica composición de los temas y el equilibrio perfecto entre brutalidad y melodía son indicativos de que la nueva dirección de la banda cuanto menos será sorprendente, como sorprendente ha sido este "Withered In Isolation", disco a contracorriente y que encandilará a los seguidores de las bandas citadas. Los griegos siempre han sabido transmitir muchísima melancolía en el metal extremo, especialmente el Black y el Doom, y esta banda no es una excepción. HEDON CRIES, ON THORNS I LAY, NIGHTFALL o incluso los primerísimos SEPTIC FLESH le han dado al estilo.
Bandas como HUMANITY ZERO aparecen de vez en cuando como rara avis y espero que desarrollen todo su potencial alejándose un poco de las comparaciones con otras bandas y creando algo un pelín más original, todo ello dentro de un estilo ya de por sí tan hermético y añejo como el Doom/Death.
Eso sí, dentro del estilo, un discazo.

Greek band Humanity Zero deliver a decent Peaceville-style slow Death/Doom opus.
I’m walking into this review somewhat blindly, given that I’ve never listened to Greece’s Humanity Zero before. Prior to listening to the album, my expectation was that this would be somewhat similar to the stereotypical Chilean Death/Doom release i.e. broken English, fast-paced music with poor production. Let’s see if Humanity Zero can surprise me.
Upon listening to this album, I have to hold my hands up and admit that Humanity Zero did indeed manage to surprise me, at least toward the start of this release. I was more inclined to believe that I’d hear your typical uptempo Death/Doom from a "former Death Metal" act - you know the script by now - but that’s not really the case here. Indeed, Humanity Zero play a much slower brand of Death/Doom and even employ the odd violin as well as several atmospheric acoustic sections, which appeals to me a lot.
In terms of comparisons, I’d perhaps cautiously edge toward 'Withered In Isolation' sounding somewhat akin to 'Like Gods Of The Sun' by My Dying Bride, albeit with an annoying drum setup. Vocally, they remind me more of Mourning Beloveth, however, so I would certainly avoid labelling them as a copycat band. Essentially, I feel comfortable in saying that Humanity Zero, no matter what influences they’ve taken, have done things their own way on this release. I’d say that they’ve done it well too.
Don’t get me wrong - I don’t think this release contains anything that anybody hasn’t heard before. However, it’s varied enough for it to be enjoyable - that’s my stance. It’s very easy to tell that time and effort went into producing each track rather than just a jumbled mess of "hit and hope" playing. Bear in mind that Humanity Zero don’t just toy with acoustics and violins; they also utilise softly spoken intervals and the odd uptempo section plus accompanying solos. There’s a little bit of something for everybody on 'Withered In Isolation', in my opinion.
As for what annoys about this album, there are some things - but nothing too heavy. For example, I simply don’t like the way the drums sound on 'Withered In Isolation' because I think they sound cheap and somewhat pointless. It doesn’t ruin the music because of the style that Humanity Zero play but I think it could be that bit more powerful if done properly. I also don’t think that they have the right kind of vocalist to cater for the softly spoken sections, given the somewhat contemplative atmosphere they’re seemingly attempting to generate. I also think that they could have done with dulling the odd violin section too - it sometimes sounds a bit too sharp and uplifting for the music they’re playing. Lastly, an oldie but goldie - I cannot stand broken English! I appreciate that nobody in this band has English has their first language but they must surely know somebody that does that could review their lyrics for them before the release is issued? Hell, I’d do it myself if asked! Misanthropic and generally depressive lyrics may not be unique nowadays but it’d be good to be able to decide whether they’re helpful to the music without constantly thinking "What is this supposed to mean?".
As I said though, the above are not catastrophic problems; it’s more about personal preference, I suppose. Overall, I have to admit that I do like this album. Even if the atmosphere generated could be stronger, I still find merit in its brooding nature and occasional burst of aggression. The production is better than I was expecting; I never struggled to hear any instruments. The growled vocals complement the music very well. Basically, it’s a good release with the odd flaw. I’m also going to express my love for the piano accompaniment at the end of the release too. I’m a sucker for that kind of "steering", if you will, and I think Humanity Zero did it really well - and I’ve not found many Doom bands that have managed to pull such off well.
I stand by my earlier comparison of Humanity Zero’s 'Withered In Isolation' to My Dying Bride’s 'Like Gods Of The Sun' with a less impressive drumming output, and I’ll throw in that fans of earlier Avernus might find some merit here, albeit a harsher presentation than Avernus tended to utilise.

Grecia siempre se ha destacado por su fenomenal escena extrema, puntualmente a bandas de death y doom. Pues bien, Humanity Zero nos propone un disco donde los fans de ambas vertientes podrán disfrutar muchísimo.
Con más de 15 años de formados, y con una alineación integrada por Dimitris Sakkas (batería, guitarra, teclados), Vaggelis Vee Kappa (guitarra líder), Stelios (violín) y Giannis Panagiotidis (voz), “Withered in silence” mezcla los estilos antes mencionados con partes ambientales y melancólicas, con la torturada voz de Giannis que se adapta perfectamente a esta vibra pesada.
La banda se inclina por un sonido de la vieja escuela, con ritmos lentos, graves, sublimados por teclados que nunca se detienen, cimentados en simples pero efectivos riffs.
“Withered in silence” es sin dudas una pieza musical de calidad. Quién sabe si este es el sonido futuro al que apunta Humanity Zero, pero aquellos fans de los sonidos oscuros, pesados, tristes y atmosféricos, tienen aquí su próxima compra.

Maybe I am being nostalgic but I like remembering old times of Greek metal and bands like Nordor, Rotting Christ, Nightfall, Septic Flesh where the scene (Athens in particular) was very original and the bands very dark and primitive the way they played their music.
When I listen to Withered In Isolation I find confirmation of my words because Humanity Zero is in nature like these bands l mentioned. Just spirit of it is 20-30 years older but still, pretty much the same. And this album is not a black metal record, more accurately, it`s death/doom and have 9 songs on it in total .
This is slow burn album and you can only hear the tracks where the band is taking the time to pace the music rather slowly, up to middle tempos. There is no time importance of this album at all because the atmosphere of music traps you like you were abandoned in the middle of Ocean with no hope. The music is builded of heavy guitars, a vocalist is growling and his raw roars are like the call from the world of the dead. They play some fine solos here, violin&keyboard passages are quite good and these are reasons why atmospheric in their songs are so well delivered. You may like it if you are into old My Dying Bride, Cathedral type of bands. The lyrics are very dark and you quickly find yourself in spiritual world of souls where you witness a decay of a body and other horrible nightmares. Charon name appeared in text in regards to Greek mythology.
There are many different elements that make this album sound very - in depth and sometimes sad but it`s good to hear like a ghost of their music levitates between worlds of so many moods. They do not want melodies to shy over the music too much; they rather want gloominess, melancholy and sorrow of music to triumph.
I like this album; the songs are consistently on good level and in terms of death doom metal record, this one is not to miss out.
