Moribundo  are  a  band  from  Spain  that  plays  funeral  doom/death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of t heir  2017  album  "Raiz  Amarga"  which  will  be  released  on  June  18th  as  a  joint  effort  between  Satanath  Records  and  More  Hate  Productions.

A  very  heavy  doom  metal  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  dark  sounding  melodies  while  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the recording  and  when  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  fashion  and  most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

Grim  spoken  word  parts  can  be  heard  at  times  along  with  some  atmospheric sounding  synths  and  after  awhile  guttural  death  metal  growls  make  their  presence  known  along  with  a  small  amount  of  black  metal  screams  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  stringed  instruments  are  also  used  briefly  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  while  the  main  focus  is  on  a  very  slow  musical  style  and  one  track  also  brings  in  a  brief  use  of  acoustic  guitars.

Moribundo  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  a modern  form  of  funeral  doom  and  mixes  it  with  90's  era  doom/death  and  a  touch  of  black  metal  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Spanish  and  cover  melancholic  themes.

In  my  Moribundo  are  a  very  great  sounding  funeral  doom/death  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.

Another somewhat gothicized death/doom affair, this time out of Spain.

The title translates to “bitter root”, so you get the general idea here…but their sound is oddly schizophrenic. Some of this sounds like a classy gothic doom sort of thing…others go nigh industrialized melodeath, if you can picture such a thing.

Moments felt like Disintegration-era Cure, others were very thick, distorted and in your face like early Fear Factory. Still others were positively Paradise Lostlike, with funereal guitar lines propelling the riffs and booming, open mouthed growl vox. It still works, even mashed all together haphazardly like this…but it’s odd, and manages to rankle somewhat.

A little less in your face aggression and more emphasis on the doomier, more melodic elements, Moribundo would be more than worthy of a global stage.

As is, they’re certainly promising and definitely worth lending an ear to…but uncomfortably flawed and disjointed where you’re expecting them to be assured and cohesive.

It’s their first album. I’m betting round 2 shows them shaking off the baby fat and coming out swinging.

Spanish death/doom band Moribundo are releasing their first album, Raíz Amarga (Spanish for “bitter root”), taking melancholic doom and fusing it with abrasive death metal. Moribundo most set themselves apart with the sad melodies that wander throughout their songs, but they’re no slouches when it comes to faster-tempo death metal rife with blast beats and putrid vocals.

As a band, Moribundo appears to be just getting started. Although they first put roots down in 2014, this Spanish three-piece has remained largely undiscovered by the hungry, ever-seeking info-tendrils of the digital world. Their Facebook page, created in January of this year, has just over 500 followers; they don’t even have an entry in Metal Archives. And yet their debut album, “Raíz Amarga,” releasing June 18th through the always-intriguing Satanath Records, shows anything but the uncertainty and unconfidence you sometimes get with newer bands. Instead, Mortvs Vyyr (lyrics), Evilead (instruments), and Luis M. Merino (vocals) have taken their sweet time to concoct a potent cocktail of pondering doom spiked with a hefty dollop of abrasive death metal, serving both with a striking degree of skill that belies their young formation.

“Raíz Amarga” is an expertly blended debut album –devastatingly consistent in heaviness and mood.

Unlike the title implies, “Raíz Amarga” (“bitter root”) goes down smoothly. This is an expertly blended debut album — devastatingly consistent in heaviness and mood, a perfect pairing of distinct, tasteful melodies and storming, stinging acidity. Rather than indulge in an over-ambitious palette, Moribundo manages to stay true to their thematic vision of pain and despair while employing a broad sound-suite to fuel their songs. Heart-aching harmonies on par with soulful acts like the tragically just-retired While Heaven Wept co-mingle with bone-grinding guitars that chunk and chug. Menacing synth choirs add cinematic flavor, and a lilting female soprano (reminiscent of theatrically minded death metal act Fleshgod Apocalypse) provides a human — a despairing one, at that — element that complements the bleakness. There’s more: soft piano leads, soul-sweet acoustic breaks, ambient rain SFX… though varied, these sounds don’t undermine the album’s identity; it retains equal parts majesty and defeat while remaining a distinct form of hybridized death/doom.

Vocalist Luis wholly embodies this concept, bellowing with harsh roars or screeching with blackened intensity, giving voice to the raw, ragged emotions that Moribundo’s music expresses. These emotions take form in words based on poems written by lyricist Mortvs Vyyr, and are performed in Castilian. And although I couldn’t understand a word, it’s worth pointing out the importance Moribundo places on Mortvs’s lyrical role to give him a permanent place in the lineup, rather than bury him in a liner note credit. I’ll definitely have to dig up the translations (or flex my limited Spanish skills) so I can give them the credit they’re due.

Member of Moribundo (Spain): Mortvs Vyyr, Evilead, and Luis M. Merino.Though only four tracks long, “Raíz Amarga” is dense yet rich and overflowing with impressive moments. Ominous, chunky intros pave the way for crashing, thundering rhythms and atmospheric breaks. The programmed drums mesh exceptionally with the weighty guitar tones, especially with the low, thudding toms. Other structural similarities are evident in the way the songs build and build and build toward magnificent crescendos that spill over with agonizingly powerful ardor. These instances of crushing catharsis enhance the songs’ earlier motifs, elevating them to new, energetic levels.

Doom is not a genre that usually grabs my attention right away. I’m usually too fatigued to make the trudging ascent that is required to truly grasp its power — but “Raíz Amarga” is worth the endeavor. I don’t know if instant, meteor-impact success for Moribundo is careening just over the horizon — perhaps they’ll climb steadily in doom-like fashion — but they deserve all the praise I can muster for this stunning debut. Friends, I implore you — whether you’re a fan of doom or not, ingest this “bitter root” as it is.

Despite only recently discovering Moribundo, I couldn’t be more excited to share a shiny new track from their upcoming album Raíz Amarga, set to drop on June 18th. Perhaps shiny isn’t the appropriate word… but we’ll get to that a bit more later. When it comes to death/doom metal, few things have impressed me more in recent years than what I’ve heard from this album. Today, the second track of Raíz Amarga, “Antitesis“, is available to stream below. Just prepare yourselves a bit beforehand.

Formed in 2014 in Spain behind a collective of musical minds in the local underground metal scene, Moribundo (translates to “Dying” in Spanish) offer a style of death metal that is as enchanting as it is horrifying. Best considered a fusion of funeral doom and death metal, Moribundo implement a dynamic range of sounds within this musical spectrum that allows them to create an energy of despair and darkness through deliberate, organized song structures. What we have for you today, the nearly nine minute long “Antitesis” (directly below), should give you a sense of exactly what I mean.

It’s certainly lengthy, but the composition is masterful. The intricacies of the instrumental work (specifically the meandering guitar passages and bipolar percussion) shine through the song’s overall density and the echoing, guttural vocals. Beyond all that, there are enough symphonic undertones to keep you locked into the sorrowful emotional roller coaster this track takes you on. Broadening the spectrum a bit, this album features four tracks, each based on a poem about — you guessed it —  death and despair. As an individual track, this is awesome stuff. But as an album, well, it all comes together in even more impressive fashion. But you’ll have to wait on that a couple more days.

For now, get immersed in the burden that is “Antitesis”. For fans of death and doom, this is a tremendous complement of sounds that is sure to strike a chord with any fan of these genres. To circle back, Raíz Amarga will be out on June 18th by way of Satanath Records, and can be preordered here. Otherwise, be sure to keep up with Moribundo through their official Facebook page for all updates and events.

Raíz Amarga (Spanish for “Bitter Root”) is the first recording by a group of experienced Spanish musicians who have taken for themselves the name Moribundo (“dying” in English). The album’s four long tracks are based on four poems of death and despair, drawing upon traditions of cold, melancholy doom and craggy death metal to carve a musical course that’s intensely atmospheric as well as physically jolting. One song from the album has appeared previously, and we have another one today named “Suicidio Ilustrado” as a further prelude to the album’s release on June 18.

“Suicidio Ilustrado” is in some ways a study in contrasts — in part a grim, crushing dirge, in part a ravaging juggernaut, and in part a mystical haunting. The riffs are mountainous; the drums hit hard enough to vibrate your spine; the vocals are usually the kind of cavernous growls that seem to emanate from some subterranean leviathan crawling toward the surface, or the shrieks of painful torment.

And on the other hand, the song is laced with crystalline guitar and keyboard arpeggios delivering gossamer strands of cold, haunting beauty, as well as solemn wordless voices that give the song an aura of ritual. And so the music is spectral and soulful as well as earth-shakingly heavy, and at times stunningly destructive.

What unites these contrasting elements is an overarching air of dread and despondency, the presence of death made real.

Somewhere in the depths of Spain, there is something dark and sinister brewing. That dark and sinister thing is Doom. Pure. Fucking. Doom. And Moribundo is the pure embodiment of it. Crossing together the many facets of Doom Metal, Moribundo create an epic sound that captures what fans of the genre will go nuts over. Raíz Amarga is four tracks of thunderous mayhem, knocking you to the floor with its sheer power. Two of those tracks, the epic opener "Vida" and "Suicidio Ilustrado" clock in at over ten minutes each. The second track, "Antitis" has a Filosofem-era Burzum feel to it with the background keyboards. There are even moments of sheer grinding on Raíz Amarga, and there is nothing that keeps you from being anything less than completely enthralled. Fans of Doom crossed with Death Metal in particular will love this record, as should fans of Funeral Doom and Blackened Doom. Overall a more than impressive debut from this Spanish powerhouse.

Moribundo (translated to "Dying" from Spanish) is an up and coming death / doom metal band from Spain formed in 2014 and featuring members from Spanish underground acts like Bizarre, Nangilima, Vanagloria, and Elderdawn.

"Raíz Amarga" ("Bitter Root") is the band's first recording, which contains four tracks based around poems of death and despair for more than 35 minutes of music. Today we're stoked to premiere new track "Vida" taken off that album - check it out below.

The band comments: "Expect a sorrowful scenario where harshness meets melody, in a stunning act full of deep growls, heavy riffs and thorough arrangements. 'Vida' - 'Life' in Spanish – is a journey through the human misery and the big lie of life."

Are you a fan of bands such as Swallow the Sun, Draconian, Paradise Lost and Amorphis? Then look no further! Moribundo (means “Dying” in Spanish) and the melancholic thoughts you might get when thinking of death is something Moribundo expresses through their music. Created in 2014 Raíz Amarga is the Spanish bands debut album and what a debut it is!

The various influences Moribundo takes from have created a new beast entirely. The use of different instruments like piano and violin combined with the depressed growls creates an almost funeral doom experience at times. Not only that the four tracks are really different to each other, with a lot of variety to the music it makes Raíz Amarga an album you can easily listen to several times without getting bored. Death and despair. Take those words in and what they really mean to you then listen to this and you will experience the bitter rot Moribundo so beautifully expresses.

I found this to be a rather epic experience. It’s sweet melancholic symphonies and variety in music that makes it stand out from the average doom act. Adding the mixing of Hiili Hiilesmaa at Yellow House Studio (Swallow the Sun, Moonspell, Amorphis, Sentenced) and you got yourself one of the better doom albums of 2017.

This is the debut album from Moribundo, a Spanish death/doom band.

Moribundo mix crushing funeral doom with harsh, horrifying death metal.

Each of the four tracks on Raíz Amarga have their own personality and character. Each is played in the same style, but has its own emphasis, making for a rewarding and satisfying listen as the band craft four different ways to explore death and despair.

Melancholic melodies and heavy atmospheres abound, with the band’s songwriting favouring a layered approach to the music. All of the various instruments used are well-played and clearly recorded, with even the bass getting a proper airing. The leads and keyboards are the defining emotive features of the songs in many ways, although the monolithic rhythm guitars shouldn’t be discounted either.

Piano, violin, synths, and female vocals are used to enhance the band’s core delivery too, used wherever necessary to add atmosphere and help foster the kind of despondent moods that the band want to create.

One of the things I love about this album is how the band effortlessly seem to combine grim, doom atmospheres with raw aggression. Most releases like this are weighted more to the former than the latter, but on Raíz Amarga there’s more of a balanced delivery between the two. Even when the band are playing slow and atmospherically, there’s still a burning malevolent aggression that manifests in the riffs and the harsh vocals.

Ah yes, the vocals; a few different vocal styles are used by the singer, and he easily demonstrates a good range and delivery. However, I have to say it’s his deep, dark growls that really do it for me. Performed with violence and power, his voice is great to listen to.

As far as death/doom goes this is up there with the best of them in my opinion. Raíz Amarga is a very satisfying listen and one that gets better the more you subject yourself to its darkness.

Highly recommended.

There’s a great season of doom metal bands coming from all over the globe. But what makes Moribundo (Moribund) different from the pack? That’s a question that I always make to myself when writing about any band. That’s what I keep in mind during my analysis. Moribundo’s “Raíz Amarga” is faithful to doom musical caractheristics, but Moribundo go further with it. I mean, Moribundo’s songs are even more slow and cadenced focusing on guitars. In “Raíz Amarga” the guitars are responsable for bringing more melodic intent and some background sounds that other bands do using the keyboards. The guitars in “Raíz Amarga” stress the melodic parts, or duel with vocals in order to give some more melody to them. Each note is very well put, one can notice that the guitarists gave a lot of thought on them.

Moribundo’s music is thick. Even in the more lyrical parts as in the middle of “Antitesis,” that brings a beautiful piano, the atmosphere gets dense. And that’s the intent. It’s something like when you go to the bathroom at night and sense some presence. It gives you the creeps. Moribundo are the band of creeps. The female lyrical voice you hear in the background instead of bringing some conventional beauty to “Antitesis,” reinforce the that atmosphere of fear I told before. Moribundo are a band that focus on guitars, thats I told before. Because of that, any additional instrument is there to give its contribution to the song. They are additional, not lead, and that’s the beauty of it. We’re talking about Metal, right? A guitar driven musical style. That’s the way it should be. It doesn’t mean that Moribundo neglect other instruments, on the opposite, all instruments have their share of importance as in “Luz (Ciego Color).”

All “Raíz Amarga’s” songs are long, as says doom metal tradition. But that’s a two faced knife. If you aren’t as creative as Moribundo are, the songs get boring. If the musitians don’t focus on applying a great repertoire of techniques and sounds, the thing goes down. Moribundo deal with that very well using some musical breaks, with other instruments or techniques, to change completely the song as in “Suicidio Ilustrado.”

By guitar driven band, one may think there a bunch of guitar solos in “Raíz Amarga,” right? Not even close! Moribundo’s guitars are also part of the game. They’re important, but not show off, so the guitar parts are to reinforce the songs. To bring melody, power, and heavyness.

Moribundo’s “Raíz Amarga” is a great deal of album. There’s no doubt that it deserves a place in your discography.

While there is no question that Moribundo have some serious chops, their lack of vision prevents them from delivering something truly great.

Newcomers Moribundo, after having been together for three years, have finally arrived with their debut album 'Raiz Amarga' and deliver an album that straddles Death metal and Doom metal. Lemme just clarify that a bit since I'm sure many of you are wondering why I just didn't say Doom/Death metal but the main issue I have with this album is that sometimes I get the feeling that the band doesn't know if they want to play Doom metal or Death metal. It's not exactly bad either way but I feel like a bit more work with blending the genres together would have really helped this. Lets get started!

First off the album starts off extremely well with some absolutely crushing guitar sounds before eventually moving to a whispered acoustic introduction. This is when things get a bit messy, for example, as soon as the more Death metal part comes in it's almost a constant barrage of vocal parts that kind of undermine the nice melodies underneath. That, and the drummer can play and play damn well and he damn well wants you to know that! Normally one or the other isn't that big of a deal but when combined with each other it's a bit much. It just comes across as a band that would feel a bit more comfortable in playing just straight modern Death metal rather than Doom metal. 'Antitesis' fares much better with having a far more concise idea of what it wants to be by giving us some a break with the vocals and giving us some good Doom. But the cramming quickly starts again with the rest of the album. Which is unfortunate since there is some really legitimate playing and sections here that need a bit more room to breathe. Just a touch more work and objectivity with the vocals and the songs would have been improved considerably.

Let's talk about the production a bit, because I think a big reason why I get the Death metal vibe with Doom parts lies with the production. Everything sounds extremely modern. Like if you've heard any new Death metal in the last 10 years you know exactly what everything sounds like down to the drums. The only real difference is the addition of keys and some chorus sounds. These songs would REALLY benefit with a better sound (or even removing them in spots) for these sections, since it adds a little too much cheese and otherwise can distract from some really good parts. For example, in 'Antitesis' the guitars are doing some good work during the second half in bringing that Doom sound in but the constant chorus effect behind them becomes distracting. That and everything is really compressed so by the end you're kinda hoping for a bit more breathing room as far as the fatigue in your ears go. Ear fatigue is real, people! And modern Death metal and its productions are the biggest offender.

I hesitate to really call this Doom/Death metal but rather a technical Death band that's trying to be epic with a few Doom ideas. There are just so many examples of the band cramming a ton of technical drums fills, chorus ideas, and vocals into a single part where any semblance of actual Doom gets sucked out and is replaced by a more modern tech Death incarnation. There's nothing inherently wrong with this but it just screams a lack of overall vision. Letting the tracks breathe rather than cramming would really benefit Moribundo, as there is no question there is a ton of talent within, but seeings how there is only one guy playing the instruments it comes off as a solo album to show off rather than a thought out whole. The potential is there though, and I truly hope Moribundo's vision clarifies into something that will really destroy.

Another Spanish metal band this week. This time it is more doom death metal. Like I said earlier; this week is a heavy week. When you play slow it is hard to play “happy” chords. Or so it seems. I wonder what it would sound like to play slow “happy” chords. So, I am digressing. This is all about the heaviness of the riff. And this is heavy. I don’t really know who MORIBUNDO reminds me of but I get really great vibes from this. This is another album that strikes all the right chords in me. This one I can listen to over and over and not really tire of it.

It is all Greek to me.

Bravi davvero.

This Spanish Doom/Death Metal brigade was formed in 2014 and this is their debut release. The four lengthy tracks of "Raíz Amarga" were created by Evilead (all instruments), Luis Miguel Merino (vocals) and Mortvs Vyrr (lyrics). Their 36 minutes long material was pretty decently composed and arranged in the best traditions and canons of the aforesaid genres. If I had to cut it short, I would say that a well-thought combination of despair and grief radiates all over in their songs. You know, this overall feel of sadness is extremely unavoidable for the true interpretation of a style such as Doom Metal. The beautiful piano, violin & acoustic guitar passages of Evilead make sure to dose the tunes the right way. The balance of these elements, by the way, was just incredibly well used in the first two songs, "Vida" and "Antitesis". Regarding the vocal parts I have to emphasize the deep growling manner of Luis, which adds an additional volume and massiveness to the repertory of "Raíz Amarga". The musical landscapes they touch are quite relaxing and abstract at some point, the way they should really be. But on the other hand, we have some fast blast beats there too, which fragmentally appear in the last two tracks: "Suicidio Ilustrado" and "Luz (Ciego Color)". It was a little bit odd to notice them there, albeit they were definitely nicely incorporated into. If you want to listen to a precisely armored Doom/Death Metal album, then I definitely recommend you to check this debut disc of MORIBUNDO!!!

This is one heavy and doomy underground band from Spain that could make waves, but alas the band – not unlike many of its peers – has a chink in its armour. Yup, you guessed it fascinatingly wimpy background vocals and the usual fare of a keyboard rearing its head on Antitesis, Suicidio Ilustrado (the worst offender) and Luz (Ciego Color) is the problem. Thank Beelzebub, however, the rest of this abomination is heavy, crushing and the offending wimdom artifacts are not steady. The vocalist, speaking of whom, is gargling glass and blood up the larynx most of the time despite the instrumental passages being prevalent. The growls are deep, the guitars heavy and the drumming reliable, but the bass has a habit of shining whenever it decides to kick in. The bass work is superlative.

This four-track thirty-disc-minute album would rate higher were it not for the superfluous and alien elements mentioned above. More Decomposed (UK) and funeral doom please and less early My Dying Bride please. Purity rules!

Satanath Records.

Mastered by Hiili Hiilesmaa at Yellow House Studio, Finland (Swallow the Sun, Moonspell, Amorphis, Sentenced)

The Spaniards "Moribundo" are a good example of very brutal and heavy death doom metal with an extreme sound setting, in their "Raíz Amarga" debut album. Well produced, well played, well sung. Nevertheless, it’s not all about brutality because these guys have occasional piano arrangements in every song. Maybe, it would fit much better in a band like Humanity Zero, but when a band sounds as brutal as Moribundo, the piano is just unnecessary. Surprises? Yes. A couple of sections with blast beats. In general, it’s a band for fans of slow brutal music mixed with melancholic piano tunes.

Here is a release akin to be deep and sepulchral, that is right to cool the hearts in this autumnal period rather summer! And it is from Spain that comes the trio MORIBUNDO, a name that betrays unsurprisingly an obvious attraction for black metal, whose members have already dragged their shoes in a bunch of obscure local formations. Underground to the end of the ingrown toenails, the people of Madrid sign here a first quality album that should delight the fans of the first efforts of ANATHEMA or MY DYING BRIDE, four long titles that will certainly leave a bitter taste in the mouth ("Raiz Amarga "meaning" Bitter Root "in the language of Nadal) to those who dare to venture there.

Because the band knows how to do in terms of overwhelming slowness and pachydermic lurching, the sound here is heavy as a lead strike but not devoid of melodies, which invariably brings it closer to the aforementioned English formations. The vocals, erupted in the native language of MORIBUNDO, are powerful and deep, but for a detailed analysis of the texts I would not be of any help, having chosen the language of Goethe long ago. I imagine despite everything, given the content of the titles ("Suicide Illustrated", "Blind Light" ...) that the group does not spread its devouring passion for the joy of living here, we talk about doom everything from even ! What is more surprising on the other hand is the use of more deathly, cheerful rhythms that come to raise the tempo when it is necessary and allow to ventilate the structure of each piece, two of which exceed the ten minute barrier. Melancholic, solemn, the riffs concocted by the guitarist Evilead testify of an experiment in the troussage of atmospheres stakeholders as the heavy strike of Luis Miguel Merino, which will not leave any chance to the ears who lack drive. Some notes of keyboards and feminine voices, discreet, also appear from time to time (especially on the excellent "Antitesis") and bring a welcome wind of welcome to this dark company.

As for the production, it is just ideal for style and does justice to every detail of this exciting and passionate journey. A glance at the artwork by Cesar Valladeres (who has also used his talents for ASPHYX, KRISIUN or UNDER THE CHURCH) and is particularly successful will only reinforce the finding to have between the hands a record that truly need a careful listening. Now !

Moribundo hail from Spain, I must admit that I have never heard of them prior to listening to this release. Now I am sorry I didnt hear their music before.

Moribundo plays death doom metal and this album contains for tracks. As you may have guessed if you ever listened to such music, the tracks are a bit longer than average with shortest being just over seven minutes long. That fact doesnt make the album boring or lame. Quite the contrary, the song structures are dinamic, not repetitive. There are some really epic and melodic parts with somber melodies and atmospheric keyboard overtones layered over soundtrack for funeral. As I understand, the lyrics are in Spanish language. I loved the alteration between deeper, more guttural vocals and screeched blackish vocals. When listening to this album, comparisons with early My Dying Bride and Ashes You Leave come to mind immediately but this album has more melodic and epic vibe. It feels like watching some old Vincent Price or Peter Cushing horror movie and just enjoying the vibe knowing that it is dark, but beautiful.

Moribundo are a young band from Spain, formed in 2014 by multi-instrumentalist Juanpa ‘Evilead’ Pérez (also known from bands like Elderdawn, Bizarre and Nangilima) and lyricist Justo ‘Mortvs Vyrr’ Arganda (who does not ‘sing’ himself). They wrote several songs throughout the years (Evilead took care of the musical side, Mortvs Vyrr the textual one), and then they recruited Vanagloria’s singer Luis Miguel Morino as vocalist. This collaboration eventually resulted in Raiz Amarga (which means ‘bitter root’, by the way). The album was recorded at the Madrid-based Bizarre Sounds Studio (instrumentation) and the Estudio Traste Cero (vocal part), and the mastering has been taken care of by Finnish top-master Hiili ‘Kai’ Hiilesmaa (think: Whispering Woods, Waltari, Amorphis, Svartby, Moonspell, Sentenced and many more). There are 500 copies (sorry, 499 or less), available via, once again, a co-operative in between two Russian labels ran by a cool and sympathetic guy called A. K., being Satanath Records from St. Petersburg (smiley…), and Volgograd-based More Hate Productions. The CD comes with an eight-page booklet, which includes the lyrics, written and sung in the band’s mother tongue. The four lengthy songs clock thirty-six minutes, by the way (seven up to ten minutes).

Moribundo (which means ‘dying’) bring a richly orchestrated form of timeless Doom Death Metal, influenced by the elementary aspects of the old school, but clearly executed in an own, creative way. It does not mean that this band is progressive. But their approach shows an own face, rather than being a copycat. But they do add a lot of original, creative and / or renewing elements, coupled on a huge does of variation.

The song writing’s basics are based around typifying melodic structures (not necessarily that twin-trem approach, but rather constructed around the corpse of each composition), dwelling in between desperation and disappointment, enforced by majestic rhythms. It’s like a canvas of heaviness and anger, injected with subtle fragments that show Evilead’s professionalism, creativity and craftsmanship. In a complementary way, acoustic guitars, piano and keyboards are part of the totality, sometimes painting a pale atmosphere at the background, then again coming forward and absorbing all attention.

The tempo, evidently, varies in between all kinds of slowness: from slow and pounding to oh so doomy. But quite interesting are the very few faster eruptions, the sudden blasts that appear once in a while (and that disappear as fast as they arrive).

It is remarkable how cool the production quality sounds like. Raiz Amarga overwhelms with the many instrumental and vocal layers, but there’s room for each single aspect to present itself through a perfectly balanced mix. There’s no irritating background noise, all instruments are clearly hearable, and not one single time you’re losing a detail (at least when paying full attention). No matter whether you’re dealing with the full, orchestral passages, an integer intermezzo of grief, or a morbid moment of fierce grimness: the whole of the time, that sonic workmanship remains stable and well-balanced seen from sonic point of view.

Oh yes, I did not mention the vocal capacities of Luis. Well, his throat is very, very deep, like abysmal growls coming from a sulphuric depth, but done without exaggeration. It truly fits to this specific kind of Doom Death, of course. Here too, there is not exactly a renewing aspect, but it’s a supplement, lifting the result to a higher level.

Raiz Amarga might not exactly be the most exciting album within the genre, but the result is more than average for sure. If you’re into material à la Swallow The Sun, Daylight Dies, Insomnium, Saturnus or Novembers Doom, then you will not be disappointed.

As a fan of the mega-violence in metal music, I am not so keen on the slow metal but, surely, this doesn't avoid to me to appreciate it in the right way. This is the case of "Raíz Amarga", debut album by Moribundo (Spanish for "dying"), a Spanish trio of zombified metalheads from Madrid/Salamanca (but their third member Mortvs Vyrr is simply their lyrics writer) that released it under the auspices of Satanath Records in cooperation with More Hate Productions.

"Raíz Amarga" consist of only 4 tracks that will crush the listeners with a melancholic and autumnal doom/death metal with some goth and symphonic elements. Specifically, the death metal is basically represented by the growls of Luis Miguel Merino (I don't like so much his growls but his choked screams are awesome!) and the guitars of the multi-instrumentalist Evilead (that played everything here). The doom metal is into the generally claustrophobic and slow pace of the music through songs that often reach the 10 minutes of lenght. The few goth elements are about, for example, the soprano vocals (like in "Suicidio Ilustrado"). Instead, the symphonic elements are given by the keyboards, that have a fundamental role here also because they are able to add a more sad and decadent vibe to the entire music even by playing not so rare piano intermezzos. And we don't forget the short appearances of the violin ("Vida" and "Luz (Ciego Color)"), very useful for the dramatic sense of melody that Moribundo want to express in every song.

Beyond all these features, there is need to say that the music by this trio is incredibly full of details. This allow to the band to continuously create an elegant web of melodic plots that often brings to strongly emotive climaxes. And the nice thing is that all these melodies are also given by the good interaction between the guitars and by the bass, as well...and the bass is even able, from time to time, to play a sort of solos!

Now, I realized some little differences between the two parts of the album. In fact, if "Vida" and "Antitesis" completely lacks of fast passages, "Suicidio Ilustrado" and "Luz..." have even some blast-beats...but don't expect to be frequently smashed by them!

Ok, "Raíz amarga", whose "Antitesis" and "Suicidio Ilustrado" are, for me, the better tracks, isn't the classic album that I love to listen to everyday but I am sure that it is a must have for the fans of bands such as My Dying Bride or October Tide. I found also some comparisons with the Italians Dark Lunacy because Moribundo have a similar sense of melody, dramatic and elegant. But unfortunately, it seem to me that Moribundo is only a studio band, so I hope that they will able to create a line-up for the live shows in the future days to come. Is it okay, Evilead and co.?
