It’s an eclectic blend of extreme metal, melodic orchestrations and electronica, and opens up with the instrumental piece A New Creation, which is very reminiscent of the brutal yet uplifting force of The Devin Townsend Project. Spaced-out beauty is one thing, and brutal metal another; Garth Arum sometimes struggles to make the two work well together, and when tracks contain both, the result is sometimes like pushing two matching magnetic poles together – they try to thrust apart, leaving quite a confusing mess in their wake. Nightmarer clearly has a lot of talent, and good composing skills, but his take on avant-garde sometimes seems to be more along the lines of throwing everything into the pot, rather than seeing what tastes good first.

When he hits the spot though, The Dawn Of A New Creation is absolutely fantastic. After a disappointing, and directionally confusing second track, A Barrage Of Hate saves the day. It sinks low into blackened death metal with orchestral accompaniments, before spiralling into gothic doom with symphonic aplomb. Though this album is often destructively powerful, there’s something enchanting about the music too; new age touches bring the heavy guitars out of the pit of hell, creating passages which are as gorgeous as they are annihilative. The music which is produced under the Garth Arum name is inspired by dreams and fairy tales; and there certainly is something dreamy about much of the record.

Between episodes of musical pyromania, Nightmarer finds the time to dive into dream-pop synths and compose exquisitely layered music. As I’ve said, this isn’t always successful when he tries to mix in heavier elements – often due to the overwhelming nature of the sounds colliding – but with the promise of another three albums to come from this project, there’s still time to refine the sound.

Three songs from The Dawn Of A New Creation are available to stream from Garth Arum‘s Bandcamp.

Garth Arum’s first effort suffers from trying to give too much. I’m not saying that the combination of genres doesn’t work, but ultimately, again and again, there’s too much to concentrate on at once.

I think that what Nightmarer is trying to do is a great idea, but hasn’t been executed perfectly with his first effort as Garth Arum. Hopefully the second album will be a more carefully planned expedition. I’ll be looking forward to it.

Spanish project GARTH ARUM re-emerges through time with its debut album, marking the dawn of a new passion, of a new fire. ‘The Dawn of New Creation’ is ispired by dreams and emotions, venturing further into the depths of the human psyche. A demiurge that leads the path to a new universe, beyond the notion of existence. This is the album of a lifetime, a deliverance of body and soul of the album’s creator Nightmarer, which is finally complete more than ten years after its initial conception. The songs were highly influenced by the music which bloomed in the 90s, be it new age, atmospheric black metal, avant-garde, death metal or even symphonic rock but with a sorrowful, dark, doomy atmosphere that matches every one of its themes thoroughly.

The beautiful harp-introduced opener entitled ‘A New Creation’ unfolds the album like (fire) flowers that blossom, letting its oneiric, fairy tale-like nature take us deeper into the album’s true, multi-dimentional character. It is very clear that the material presented in this album is dense and conceptual to a great extent, but executed with openness and purity of vision. ‘Shadows of the Past’ begins with a beautiful piano section only to be interrupted by Nightmarer’s menacing growl that signals the outburst of the guitar riffs, spanning into a musical manifold where bright and dark are so genuinely mixed together with tools varying from black metal to doom and progressive. The music is highly technical with enchanting melodies and frequent classical piano interludes that make the sections that follow after even more intense and impetuous as well as providing breathing space in order to make the listener digest the quantity of information the album contains, musically. The ferocious ‘A Barrage of Hate’ continues in the same pace, but even faster and more vigorous than before, although some hints of doom can be spotted in the end of the song. The lyrics are in perfect tie with the music and the vocals, portaying the state of betrayal in the most hateful of ways. As we proceed further into the album we come across, yet another different element in GARTH ARUM’s music. Songs like ‘The Path to Oblivion’ or ‘Trip (Part I)’ feature almost only female vocals or even electronic segments, exploring a deeper, softer side of the band while the music being still technical and varied.

While listening to ‘The Dawn of a New Creation’ one can’t help but notice how much attention has been put to its every little detail. The overall sound is always filled with ambience, but the melodious lead guitar or piano passages, as well as the fast-paced soloing enhance the songs to a great degree. As far as the vocals are concerned , they are yet another ingredient that lifts the album to a whole new level. Nightmarer’s skills and creative vocal lines shift between clean singing and black metal shrieking with ease but to me it is the harmonious choral parts that can really stand out even without the presence of music, presenting an etherial and enchanting atmosphere that can lift you off your feet. ‘Labyrinth of Lies’ and ‘Lucid Dreams’, which stand amongst the best tracks on the album are a great example of the above where all the aforementioned elements are so efficiently mixed together. This source of creation is also strengthened by a collaboration owith four more individuals in Slo (SMOHALLA), Camille Giraudeau(STAGNANT WATERS, SMOHALLA), Lady Carrot and Cecilia (ON3IRIC4) who gladly offered their own, distinctive colous into this uneven musical palette. The multiple layers of tracks that are going on at the same time do not affect the album the slightest bit as ‘The Dawn of a New Creation’ features good composition in total but with an improved production this album could have been even better.

All in all, ‘ The Dawn of a New Creation’ is nothing but a deep voyage into the universe, into innocence and unreality. A hybrid of disparate styles that may seldom be an easy pill to swallow due to the fact that it is a really personal album and its music style which may not relate to any specific band. It is however, a particular view of music through the eyes and heart of its creators, a project that took ten years to finalise itself and one should really keep that in mind before starting to experience it. Are you ready to take up the challenge?

Avantgarde Metal

Though it took a few journeys to fully seduce thoughts and emotions The Dawn Of A New Creation, the debut album from Garth Arum emerged an enthralling release and experience which is intriguingly unpredictable and invigoratingly skilfully crafted. It is an adventure taking in varied melodic landscapes and diverse sceneries bred in multiple genres and refreshing flavourings. As mentioned it takes time to totally persuade but once enamoured with its imaginative premises the album is one to linger long in the passions.

Garth Arum is the solo project of Nightmarer, the vocalist and guitarist of Spanish avant-garde black metallers As Light Dies. The project has its seeds in compositions which the musician started in 1997 and completed in 2003, The Dawn Of A New Creation, the first of possibly four proposed releases which unveils eleven of these striking and inventive songs. The tracks are vibrant pieces of avant-garde experimentalism fused and veined with the hearts of ambient sounds, classical compositions, and dreamy electronics, resulting in songs which capture the imagination whilst taking flight with thoughts and emotions through riveting and entrancing soundscapes. The album is at ease in venturing through bright and vibrantly warm scenery or shadow drenched darker climes, often seamlessly merging both into the same breath of imagination as it traverses desolate emotive realms and evocative fantasy clad glories within moments of each other or simultaneously.

The Satanath Records released album starts with the beauty and splendour of A New Creation, the opening crystalline melodic waters of the track soon wrapped by the sinews of jagged riffs and angelic harmonies provided by guest Cecilia Tallo from On3ric4. It is a short invitation which beckons with a warm and beckoning grace skirted by harder emotive shadows and evocations. Its brief presence is soon taken by Shadows Of The Past, another song with a beauty clad start, this time provided by great piano caresses and soon after symphonic embraces. It is a mere few moments though before the muscular intensity of the track explodes to darken the skies, riffs and rhythms building up their intimidation, though again it is a swift cloud as the song evolves into a stirring mix of both extremes to feed every appetite, the vocals offering a scowling blackened breath whilst guitars bring flames of melodic invention. Incendiary to thought bred imagery and senses, the track lights up a cascade of ever shifting investigations as emotional textures steal the imagination for its own provocation.

The ferocious start of A Barrage Of Hate is soon swapped for an irresistible groove and barbed hooks which shuffle between seducing and chewing up the ear. In another scintillating rampage across the emotions the track combines a clutch of opposing styles into one inciting passage, a song which employs black and death metal as well as classical and melodic rock for what could be the first ‘extreme pop metal ‘song. It is a tantalising track which defies description but asks to be labelled with a plethora of tags, but simply it is in a class of its own, as is the album.

Through the likes of the excellent The Path To Oblivion featuring the voice of Lady Carrot from Aegri Somnialends, a song which is a combination of gothic metal and early The Cure, and Rusty Hands with Slo from Smohalla providing the vocals, the album continues to impress even if slipping below the highest plateaus set by earlier songs. The second of the two songs toys with ears and thoughts, further chilling ambiences and intrusive rhythmic enterprise drenched in rabid invention locked in with sonic discoveries and acidic melodic weaves which are brought to bear on the great vocals harmonies. It is soon surpassed though by the warm seduction of Trip (Part I), the track again witnessing the soprano grace of Lady Carrot within folk spiced metallic fascination.

Further highlights on what is a persistently impressive release come with the deliciously fiery almost bedlamic dance of Lucid Dreams and the caustically black atmospheric Yearned freedom which finds the vocals of Camille Giraudeau (Smohalla and Stagnant Waters) adding their strong expression to the impacting tempest. The Dawn Of A New Creation is an album which inspires the imagination to create its own narrative and emotive canvas whilst leading thoughts into varied ventures with each listen, especially as each endeavour sees more corners and depths discovered by the listener. Fresh and truly imaginative the album is destined to leave very satisfied hearts in its wake whilst igniting hunger for the next episode of the Garth Arum project.

Garth Arum is a solo project showcasing his work which he started to compose over 10 years ago and finished around 2003. As an anniversary he wanted to record everything again and show it to the world. It consists of material from 4 albums; all re-recorded following the chronological order that he followed ten years ago.

Garth wanted to take experimentalism one step further, adding elements of ambient sounds, classical compositions and electronics. The album starts with a beautiful intro of a harp before exploding into amazing vocals, drumming and guitars which literally takes my breath away! I feel goose bumps running down my arms & shivers down my spine…what an impressive start!

The intro track slows before a piano piece brings in the second track. Once again it explodes with heaviness bringing in so much variety in styles, it’s hard to review as it draws you in, and I feel I am unable to move…it’s just totally incredible! The vocals are deep, death style which balances out the track perfectly with softer backing vocals, which take over, before going into some amazing guitar solos, riffs and melodies, which follows some beautiful clean vocals too, as well as fretless bass, synths, drum programming and keyboards. The synths are demonstrated best on track 6 ‘Labyrinth of lies’, giving the album a different direction and keeping your attention throughout, mid-way through the album, again using the harp against the heavy guitaring, which is just genius. With so much diversity and different vocal styles, each track brings in something different, but are all as incredible as each other! The album was composed throughout the last fifteen years and not all the tracks are as heavy as some feature female vocalists; Cecilia Tallo, Lady Carrot from Aegri Somnialends, Slo from Smohalla and Camille Giraudeau also from Smohalla and Stagnant Waters; bringing in a beautiful classical/folk metal side to this album.

Track 10 ‘Yearned freedom’ (feat Camille), was also another personal favourite as it did show elements of black metal…my favourite genre, which just shows this album has something for everyone!

Garth Arum states that he is inspired by dreams and fairy tales and it is nothing but a deep voyage towards one’s inner self, venturing further into the human psyche. I think this is clear and shown in his songs and lyrics as you can hear the influences by the music from the 90s, from new age, atmospheric black metal, avant-garde, death metal to symphonic rock….this album has it all!

The album slows down on the last track, ending the album nicely with Cecilia Tallo voice, over what seems to be a dance beat, before slowly drifting off to nothing! I was quite sad this album was finished, but in no way lacks anything…I can take a big sigh of relief.

On the whole this is one album that will literally stop you in your tracks and grabs your attention immediately; it is so unique and wonderful. I will be very surprised if this album doesn’t get flooded with high reviews after its release later this month. Personally, I really cannot state how much I love this album!! This will definitely be in my Top 10 of best releases this year…in fact I think I have to listen to it again, and again and again!

I musicisti coinvolti sono tutti molto bravi e “The Dawn Of A New Creation” sprigiona molta passione e calore.

E.M.M (Eclectic Mineral Music).
Fuck music definitions.
Don't let you be tagged, bacause tags are ghettos where they want us to be.

Me juego mis tentáculos.

Was lange währt, wird endlich gut.

MUNDO ROCK & HEAVY Webzine

Hørt om avantgarde/black metal bandet As Light Dies?

I have no idea what mastermind Nightmarer has done prior to this. Therefore I have no expectations on this album. It could turn out to be the most avant-garde since Deathspell Omega or it could turn out to be totally shite. It could also turn out to be something completely different, something that I hadn’t expected. I have no idea how to describe this musically. Don’t know if progressive black metal works in describing this album but that is the feeling I get from listening to it. Add a symphonic touch to the sound and you get an eclectic array of sounds that in its full make for an interesting listening. Not as original as it might seem on paper but still good enough to make it stand out enough for you to pay attention to it.

Garth Arum's album 'The Dawn Of A New Creation' is a pet project by Nightmarer of moderate As Light Dies fame. This personal endeavour had three years in the making, and it shows, there are many details and a lot of care went in it. The music can be described as symphonic black/death metal with avant-garde tendencies. Synths play an important role in the album, ranging from mere atmospheric tapestry to being a leading melodic means, futuristic or as simple piano and organ. Progressively styled riffs and songs show a technical predisposition backed by programmed drums and this way they reminded me of a black/death metal version of Dream Theater. As personal as this album may have been in making it, as a listener this isn't very obvious. The album's sound, style and production is actually rather sterile in terms of emotionality and not even guest appearances on violin (by someone named Strudle) and vocals (by Slo and Camille of Smohalla fame) were able to inject this into the album. Technically, there's no faulting Garth Arum, but besides flawless musicianship this does not offer any long lasting appeal. Only for fans of technical progressive metal.

Garth Arum is the name of a one man project, the brainchild of a guy who calls himself Nightmarer. That sounds a bit scary. The guy started writing music for this project back in the 1990s, and it is now those writings has come to life in the debut album The Dawn of a New Creation. Sure there was a demo made some time ago but this is the real album that has a dreamy looking cover artwork that makes it quite hard to draw conclusions about what to expect when the album gets a spin in the record player. The inspirations is unsurprisingly, judging by the cover art, dreams, fairytales, journeys through the human psyche and such things. That all sounds exciting, the problem is that it is a one man project and those are quite often terrible pieces of indifference or garbage. Still, no band or project are judged beforehand so what about this?
It is avant-garde black metal, dreamy, deep and with lots of dynamics between the heavy and the soft dreamy stuff. It is quite varied as well but all the time with a surreal sense of dreams and fairytales looming over it. It is a dream painted on a canvas made out of fairy dust. Really well produced album this one with a soundscape that invites the mind to wander through the different moods and ideas in the brain, of course if you are someone without imagination it might be less exciting. I think the album is a high quality production on most parts, but maybe he is trying a bit too hard at times as there are some parts that sounds a bit forced and the album is also a tad on the long side with the eleven tracks almost reaching the hour.

I would say that this album has its flaws but nevertheless it is a strong album with an excellent production for a debut. I would say that it is overall a very interesting and fascinating musical journey, the dreamscapes are often enough to convince me to overlook the smaller niggles I have. It plays on what I like and it is a thing that makes you think and above all it is not a typical dull, stereotypical album that most albums in the metal genre actually are. I like this no matter the flaws.

Best about the album is the opening and the ending which are quite impressive and really likeable. I should also add that the middle of the album isn’t that bad but maybe not as good as the parts I see as the best. Nevertheless, I said I really enjoy this album and I do, I can however see that some may have problem with it being an album demanding something from you as a listener so if you are more into playlist of rubbish metal songs from Iron Maiden and their peers then this isn’t your cup of tea.

So, for all of you with an avant-garde view of life, this is really something you should have a look at. There are flaws as I was touching on before but it is said that Nightmarer has material for four albums so this flaws might well be rectified in upcoming releases which are said to be expected in coming years. I look forward to that, but in the meantime there is this great album to be entertained by.

Hallowed

Remember when Austin Powers was frozen for three decades, and upon being de-thawed, proceeded to “relieve” himself for what seemed like 15 minutes? That could be the parallel to Garth Arum’s terribly overblown Dawn of a New Creation album. Instead of being tucked away for 15 minutes (not in that sense. Gross!), the album has supposedly been in the works for 15 years, which means Arum main dude Nightmarer has sat on this thing while all sorts of exciting things have happened. He’s even worse than Wintersun’s Jari Maanepaa.

Depicted as some sort of avant-garde haven that draws in Arcturus, Ved Buenes Ende, and Winds, Garth Arum simply have too many ideas floating about to making anything concrete out of the 11 songs on display. DR thought it was possible to make it through this album twice in one evening, and while the promising “A New Creation” (like the Devin nods) and ethereal “Shadows of the Past” have weight and atmosphere, the album gradually descends into a land where apparently, no idea is discarded, making it a two-night chore. Mr. Nightmarer would be advised to trim down some tunes, focus on a central idea or two (but not three!) and allow his dynamic reach to not be so alligator-armed.

Understandably, the need to showcase one’s musical versatility and array of musical ideas is the grounding for Dawn of a New Creation. However, Nightmarer should take some cues from the real masters of avant-garde (Celtic Frost, the aforementioned Arcturus), and learn that sometimes, less is more, even when you feel otherwise and have waited an eternity to get one’s musical ideas on the table.

Dead Rhetoric

Fazit: Wirklich bemerkenswertes Meisterwerk, welches in vielen Genrebereichen Halt macht.

My momma always said, “Avant-garde metal is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.” This holds very true for GARTH ARUM’s debut album ‘The Dawn Of A New Creation’, a record over 10 years in the making. Hailing from Spain, the band is focused around core member and multi-instrumentalist Nightmarer, and features five other guest contributing vocals, violins and lyrics to the stylistically unrestrainable album.
Pinning down one exact category for GARTH ARUM is an impossible task, but the most apparent aspects would have to be symphonic black metal, melodic death metal and progressive rock/metal. However there are plenty of non-metal parts scattered throughout the songs, whether they be piano or violin pieces, and these help the music flow smoothly through its constant changes in styles. Moments like these can come rather suddenly though, such as in the bone-crunching ‘A Barrage of Hate’, and it’s very reminiscent of IWRESTLEDABEARONCE to the point where I was left feeling cheated that a breakdown didn’t follow (there was a black metal one later on in the song , and it was awesome).
While I sure do love black and death metal to the point where my parents are really worried about me, I can’t help but feel ultra nostalgic during the synth and piano sections. The intros to ‘A New Creation’ and ‘Shadows Of The Past’ feel like they came straight from the soundtrack of a Legend of Zelda game and this is what really sells the album to me. Furthermore, it continues at that internationally high-standard production level throughout the entire album, and amazingly without any sacrifice to the other aspects of the music. Where most symphonic extreme metal bands are either very metal or very symphonic with the other part suffering because of it, GARTH ARUM is well rounded without the two parts sounding like they’re competing for the lead.
‘The Dawn Of A New Creation’ is more art than music, created as an expression of Nightmarer’s mind rather than sounds for the masses. Over a decade in the making and every moment of that decade’s work is constantly on display throughout the aural journey of the album. It’s only downfall is that it’s best appreciated as a whole, to listen to just one song is to experience so little what’s on offer, so make sure when you check it out you have a whole hour free to listen and enjoy.

The Dawn Of A New Creation.

Garth Arum is a one-man project, but the multifaceted, hyper-complex compositions that fire from Nightmarer are befitting of a full-blown prog metal collective. The composer has a wily way with melody, and he merges the guttural and the gorgeous at every turn on The Dawn of a New Creation. The pace of the album is freeing; it ebbs and flows with vibrant chugs, crystalline piano plinks, and sprinting blast-beats. And while these elements can all be found in the cresting “Shadows of the Past,” “The Path to Oblivion” shifts gears and emerges with clean guitar, female vocals, and electronic bass swells. It is sonic trickery, but this isn’t a bad thing. In fact, it is this restless nature that makes these songs and this album addictive. Each of the 11 compositions has its own steely personality, an identity that is unique both in sound and texture. The Dawn of a New Creation establishes Garth Arum as a sonic innovator whose big ideas beget even bigger compositions.

Garth Arum is probably a new name to many a Metal music lover, and that's not so surprising...because it is the solo outing of a musician by the name of Nightmarer...whom in normal life is known as singer/ guitarist Óscar Martín of Madrid based Avant-Garde Metal outfit As Light Dies.

As those in the know may tell you, ALD originated as a project in 1998, and didn't grow to an actual band until 2003. Going through several line-up changes, that band so far delivered two unofficial (in 2003 and 2004) demos, followed by an official demo (in 2005), the EP-single Gea (2006) and the full-length albums A Step Trough The Reflection(Mondongo Canibale Records, 2007), Ars Substitution From Within The Cage (BadMoonMan Productions, 2010) and Ond: Enslaved Tribute (Pictonian Records, 2012). Over the years, Martín himself has had moments where he was live musicians for other bands (Bloodline and Hybrid), been in some smaller bands abut which I found no other info that their names (Amargora, Fatalitas Band and Ildûr) and fiddled around with several side-projects (Aegri Somnia, Der Kartoffelkult, Fu Fu), which apparently never produced any (musical) output (as far as I know).

With the tenth anniversary of his main band coming up, Óscar got to reflecting about finishing up some projects from the past, and one of the first things he got back to, is this Garth Arum material, which he started to compose in 1997, and more or less finished in 2003, but never published or recorded. Which is amazing, because on the project's facebook page, Óscar...or, rather Nightmarer...mentions that there's enough material for 4 albums, which will be delivered in the future, in the chronological order the musician followed ten years ago.

Although a solo project, Nightmarer díd make use of some friends to add extra flavouring to the album. Paying most instruments (guitar, bass, keyboards, whistle ad drum programming) himself, he had one “Strudle” (most probably his bandmate Jesus Villalba from ALD) come in to play the violin in one track (“Trip (Part I)”), and had extra singers in for diversity : extra male vocals by one “Slo” (of Smohalla) on the track “Rusty Hands” (of which the man also wrote the lyrics), and female vocals by (in order of first appearance on the album), Cecilia Tallo of On3ric4 (on the songs “A New Creation” and“ Trip (Part II)” - she also contributed lyrics to the latter), Lady Carrot of Aegri Somnia (hey hey...rewind...yep, the same “side-project” as mentioned above!) (on the songs “The Path To Oblivion”, “Labyrinth Of Lies”, and “Trip (Part I) – also delivering lyrics to the latter), and Camille Giraudeau of Stagnant Waters (on the track “Yearned Freedom”. One side-note here: I have never heard music by ALD, or at least not knowingly, but if indeed the Avant-Garde Metal of ALD can be described as including elements of Folk, Black/ Doom, Progressive Death, and Gothic, then I can say that this same description also holds for Garth Arum. And, as you'll be able to hear for yourself when listening to the album (it is posted in its entirety at BandCamp...find the link at the aforementioned facebook page), the vocals go from Blackened screaming to Death growls, to clean...nice contrasts.

In essence, an album well worth picking up. Makes me wonder why Martín had it printed on a Russian label known for it limited copy output, because I'm sure the album is gonna land into many a critic's year-list! And for the fan, it may be difficult to get a copy, see? Ach well...as a privileged music fan, I am already looking out for the sophomore Garth Arum album with positive anticipation!

No sé si decir que "The Dawn Of A New Creation" me ha sorprendido, realmente.

The Dawn Of A New Creation.

Wings Of Death

Pitchline-Zine

Garth Arum is the project of multi-instrumentalist/vocalist/composer Nightmarer, who tackles guitar, bass, keyboards, synth programming, fx, and vocals on this latest CD The Dawn of a New Creation. Obviously he has a love for death metal, black metal, as well as symphonic progressive rock, as there's plenty of all three here, which makes for an intriguing listen. Some well placed keyboards throughout the album give it that proggy, often times cinematic flavor, but make no mistake about it, this is an extreme metal album at its core. Evil growls and screams battle it out with crooning melodic vocals, with the occasional female vocal in spots courtesy of guests Lady Carrot (no, I'm not making that up),Cecilia Tallo, Slo, and Camille . There's a certain 'epic-ness' about this whole album, which you can hear on the crushing "A Barrage of Hate", and a track like "Lucid Dreams" really has a lot going for it, as it jumps from bombastic prog to intricate prog-metal, to symphonic death metal, with a little dab of Frank Zappa inspired zaniness thrown in for good measure.

To be honest, there's a lot to like here on The Dawn of a New Creation, though at times it can be somewhat of a schizophrenic listening experience. Nightmarer apparently has three more albums in the works under the Garth Arum moniker, so it will be interesting to see where he takes this next.

Ο Νightmarer, που έχει κυκλοφορήσει ένα ακόμα demo με τίτλο “The Fireflower’s Tale” το 2007, έγραψε όλα τα κομμάτια κατά τη διάρκεια της δεκαετίας των 90’s οπότε και η κυκλοφορία του ντεμπούτο “The Dawn Of A New Creation” είναι ουσιαστικά έργο ζωής για τον ισπανό mainman των Garth Arum.

One man bands, I get a lot of those lately, and as I've told you before, they tend to have a very little middle ground, other they're excellent and serve as a vehicle for a man's vision, or they're terrible because the visionary has no one to bounce his or her ideas off of, so what category does GARTH ARUM fall into?

The Spanish one man project's debut full length opens with a piano heavy symphonic intro, "A New Creation", comes complete with female vocals, but it is the skillful piano work that immediately catches your ear, the piano continues well into the next track "Shadows of the Past", the song however picks up pace into a full blown Death Metal blast, slows down again and again forays into the realms of Death Metal with Symphonic Black undertones. It is very obvious from the get go that this album is a far cry from your standard one man band. Let's start from the fact that while most Metal albums use the guitar as the main attraction, while GARTH ARUM use both the guitar and the piano, notice I didn't say Keyboards, I said piano, as it is a classical piano sound on the album which is so dominant, rather than the standard synthesizer / keyboards that most Black / Gothic / Doom Metal acts use.

That very fact sets it apart from your run of the mill extreme metal act, Have a listen to "The Path of Oblivion", a fantastic composition, utilizing very interesting guitar effects, lead female vocals with the piano being dominant on the heavy chorus rather than the slower and more mellow verses making the sound very unusual and original, with electronic effects coming in towards the 3 minute mark, This my friends is the album of a musician, an excellently executed piece of metal mastery, Impressive in its songwriting, the pace changes quickly, the longer compositions never overstay their welcome,

And most importantly, it's original and unusual enough to make anyone have a listen, foraying into several genres, including Symphonic, Black, Death and Doom; It's a fascinating piece of work and truly deserves a perfect score!

Metal Temple

Looking at the press release for Garth Arum’s debut it's not unreasonable to be at least moderately intrigued by the ambitious musical direction sole member Nightmarer has embarked on. Inspired by dreams, fairy tales, and such musical genres as new age, symphonic rock, and atmospheric black metal, surely one is set up for something large, and after a few spins of his debut album, The Dawn of a New Creation, I’d say he’s succeeded in his endeavor.

It would be absolutely pointless to categorize Garth Arum into a single genre, or even into several, as I feel any descriptor wouldn’t do much justice to the overarching character of this album. The first track, “Shadows of the Past,” gives us a lot to digest with its airy keys, upbeat guitar gallops, cheerful drum patterns, and growl/clean duets. It’s a very progressive (and power metal oriented) foot forward if one were to classify it as death metal but it’s not that simple.

The main rhythm of “Trip (Part I)” is a high speed power metal gait with folk riffs and faux violins that make you want to do a jig. The aggressive trem lines, rolling melodeath bursts, and clean female singing muddle classification further, clearly showing that Nightmarer is not afraid to blend just about everything. And let’s not forget the predominantly black metal tracks, “A Barrage of Hate” and “Yearned Freedom,” which are highly akin to Mörk Gryning, with guitar tuning to match the band’s final, self-titled release.

These are indeed diverse riffs and every single one of them is accompanied by a dense symphonic and keyboard presence, which unfurls a delicate veil rather than a suffocating blanket. It adds a grand yet gossamer sound to the album without making it overcrowded or flowery. Each stroke of the key and chord is executed perfectly and intelligently, with the attention always on the guitars. Even the various sets of clean vocals that are strewn all over the place never seem to detract from the riffs, which if you’re picky about clean singing, will come as good news. Much of it reminds me of the off-key wailing from many a goth metal band in the 1990s, which is fitting since that's when this stuff was written. An odd choice, then, to release this material in 2013 and stranger still that the singing, as bad as it can sometimes be, doesn't ruin the music. It's low on the mix so it's easy to tune it out and pay more attention to the busy music.

Helping this effort, too, would be Nightmarer’s propensity for guitar virtuosity, which he displays as much as he sensibly can by making ordinarily “simple” guitar sections much more complex with solos and intricate picking. It actually reminds me a lot of how Dushan Petrossi turns simple rhythms into technical showcases without ever giving off the impression of showboating. It simply feels natural and the result is a very guitar-centric piece of work, which is an incredible feat considering how multilayered the album is. It should come as good news, then, to learn that Nightmarer has written three more albums, with each one being edited, re-recorded, and released in the order in which he wrote them over 10 years ago. With so much to look forward to, let’s just hope he doesn’t keep us waiting too much longer.

Metal Observer

Garth Arum are the solo-outfit of As Blood Dies’ Oscar Martin ‘Nightmarer’ Diez-Canseco, a project this guy started at the end of last century. Throughout all these years, Nightmarer wrote material for this project specifically, but because of his duties in As Blood Dies and several other bands, he did not have the time to record anything decently. But in 2009 he started recording the material he had been working on for years, and it will end up in a triptych, from which the Dawn Of A New Creation is the first part.

The whole recording process of this debut took place at his Fireflowers Studio, mix and mastering included, and Nightmarer worked with some guests on vocals, like female singers Cecilia Tallo and Lady Carrot, and Smohalla-members Camille Giraudeau (the guy behind Stagnant Waters) and Vincent ‘Slo’ Cassar (also known from Phlegma). And oh yes, As Light Dies violist Jesus ‘Strudle’ Villalba appears as session violin player on one track (Trip Part I) too.

Garth Arum’s musical journey is based on dreams and fairy-tales, with the human psyche, seen from an introspective vision, as result. The Dawn Of A New Creation clocks nearly one hour and opens with the short (two minutes of length) intro A New Creation. It’s some kind of symphonic and progressive Extreme Metal, with the ‘usual’ instruments, as well as piano, female voices and ambient New Age-oriented synths. …something like Philip Glass covered by Strapping Young Lad… Shadows Of The Past too begins with piano, but soon different other angles turn in. And that’s more or less the history behind the whole album. Not once there is one single line that lasts for more than a minute. Diversity, it is the keyword behind this sonic trip. And it goes for all aspects: vocals, melodies, song structures, executed genre, atmosphere, etc. Avant-garde pieces interchange with Black / Death-oriented ones, bombastic parts with sober, integer ones, atmospheric passages with extremely heavy ones, traditional excerpts with modern ones, electronic influences with classic ones, ambient atmospheres with down-earthed ones, and so on… And in one way or another, Garth Arum succeeds to create a cohesive piece of sonic craftsmanship, despite the overload on impressions you might undergo.

The Dawn Of A New Creation surely is a very adventurous, yet mostly difficult album, ingeniously written and composed, but probably / possibly ‘too much’. However, if you can appreciate eclectic material à la The Devin Townsend Project, later Arcturus / Ulver, Maudlin Of The Well, Ephel Duath, Smohalla, Unexpect, Solefald or Periphery, then you might appreciate this multi-layered creation. I think there are too much un-structured gaps, incoherent hiatuses and exaggerated contradictions, but this isn’t but a first part of a trilogy. So I might wonder what the next album will be alike. Once again: benefit of doubt!

Начнем с того, что это проект испанского музыканта Nightmarer - Vocals, Guitars, Bass, Lyrics, Drum Programming (2007-present), (Alien Syndrome 777, As Light Dies, Autumnal (live), Aegri Somnia, ex-Bloodoline (live), ex-Hybrid (live), ex-Wrong (live), ex-Amargore, ex-Der Kartoffelkult, ex-Fatalitas Band, ex-Fu Fu, ex-Ildûr).

Garth  Arum  are  a  band  from  Spain  that  plays  a  symphonic  and  avant  garde  mixture  of  doom  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2013  album  "The  Dawn  Of  A  New  Creation"  which  was  released  by Satanath  Records.

Classical  guitars  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  modern  prog  metal  direction  that  also  uses  clean  singing  male  and  female  vocals  along  with  a  great  amount  of  synths  and  the  music  also  uses  a  great  amount  of  folk  instruments  and  after  awhile  death  metal  growls  start  to  became  a  very  huge  part  of  the  recording.

At  times  the  music  can  be  very  avant  garde  and  experimental  while  there  is  always  a  great  amount  of  melody  present  throughout  the  recording  in  both  the  riffs  and  solos  while  some  of  the  vocals  also  add  in  black  metal  screams  and  spoken  word  parts  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  are  utilized.

Some  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  also  utilize  a  great  amount  of  symphonic  elements  and  throughout  the  recording  you  can  hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  later  songs  also  introduce  acoustic  guitars  and  female  vocals  onto  the  recording  and  the  music  also  brings  in  elements  of  electronic  music  into  some  parts  of  the  recording.

Garth  Arum  take  doom  and  death  metal  and  mixes  it  with  atmospheric,  progressive  and  avant  music  along  with  a  touch  of  black  metal  to  create  a  very  original  sounding  recording,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dreams,  unreality,  universe,  return  to  innocence  and  apocalypse  themes.

In  my  opinion  Garth  Arum  are  a  very  great  sounding   progressive,  symphonic,  and  avant  garde  mixture  of  doom  and  death  metal  along  with  a  touch  of  black  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Shadows  Of  The  Past"  "Labyrinth  Of  Lies"  and  "Yearned  Freedom".

A Garth Arum név a spanyol Óscar Martín Diez-Canseco, alias Nightmarer Urat takarja. Aki egy multiinstrumentalista zenész. Tehát igazi "onemanshow” hallható a The Dawn of a New Creation lemezen. A szintetizátor a gitárral egyenértékű és a belőle kifacsart hangzatok miatt némileg érthető a Metal Archives-on hozzájuk csatolt szimfonikus death metal kategória. Főhősünk a facebookon már árnyaltabban fogalmaz, eklektikus/szimfonikus extrém metalt játszik saját meghatározása szerint. Ez valóban lefedi a valóságot.

Az intróként is fölfogható A New Creation után következik a Shadows of the Past, ami minden Garth Arum stílusjegyet fölvonultat.

Extrém és tiszta ének, zongorás betétek, death metalos tempók, ide-oda tekeredő, kicsit ad-hoc jellegű gitárszólók, stb. Szinte észrevétlenül vált át a nóta a szélvészgyors kezdésű A Barrage of Hate-be, ami aztán power metalos riffelésbe torkollik. E szerzemény is hordoz magán death, heavy, power, szimfó metalos ismérveket. Ennek ellenére én mégis élvezettel fülelem a lemezt. A The Path to Oblivion-nek kimondottan jót tett a vendég énekesnő csatasorba állítása. A 2:20 körül elővezetett, már-már C-64-es játékok zenéire emlékeztető elektronikus betét szintén tetszetős.

A műanyag orgonahangzással operáló Labyrinth of Lies is tele van érdekes húzásokkal. A Rusty Hands kozmikus kezdése, effektjei kapcsán Jean Michel Jarre neve ugrik be. Halld pl. Trip (Part 1).

Tudatosabb szerkesztési/komponálási elvek mellett, egy minőségi hangzással valószínűleg nagyobbat ütne a The Dawn of a New Creation, de ebben a formában sem tekinthető reménytelen próbálkozásnak.

The Dawn Of A New Creation.
