The Age Of Aquarius“ jegliche Spannung.

On June 6, Satanath Records will release a new album named The Age of Aquarius by the Finnish horror-prone black metal band Gloomy Grim. To whet your appetite for the album, today we bring you the stream of one of the new songs, “A Lady In White“.

This premiere marks Gloomy Grim’s first appearance at our putrid site, and so a word of introduction may be in order. The band first took shape in the mid-’90s as the solo project of vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Agathon. Since then, Gloomy Grim evolved into a full band and have released six albums (including this new one), along with a few shorter releases. They have consistently been inspired by horror movies and their soundtracks, as well as by the darkness of life in general.

A long period of apparent silence followed the band’s last album, 2008’s Under the Spell of the Unlight, but with this new full-length the band have made up for lost time in fine fashion.

We obtained this statement from Agathon about the new song we’re bringing you today:

“The lyrics of the song are based on true events which I experienced while living in an old house in the middle of the forest and where an old lady had died.

“This song was made by writing the lyrics before the music and on an “old GG”-style by composing on keyboard and later to work on the guitars.

“It was almost left in the drawer since I had no idea what the guitars should play. But as I gave the guitarists a chance to check it out for what to play, they composed their parts quite fast. Especially Micko Hell’s nylon-string solo gave me the shivers on my spine, and the despair of the Lady Dressed in White can be sensed in it. The song itself represents the old style Gloomy Grim at its best. This is also one of the first songs I composed for the new album.”

Even the brief seconds of piano keys and choral voices at the launch of the song immediately create a spooky atmosphere, but if you’re expecting some kind of gloomy gothic plodding, you’re in for a surprise — because after those few seconds, the song erupts into an inferno of scalding black metal laced with wraithlike keyboards melody.

The pacing and intensity are dynamic, with slower passages segmenting the conflagration, showcasing Agathon’s keyboard work, a big grinding bass sound, and that solo mentioned above — which combine to create a tangible aura of supernatural horror.

Another song from the album named “The Shameful Kiss” premiered earlier at Decibel, and we’re including that stream below as well.

Finland is probably one of the richest countries in terms of precious metal deposits, and one of those lodes comes in the form of Gloomy Grim, whose sixth album The Age Of Aquarius addresses the tyranny of stars, with the vilest of worms to dwell.  However let’s go back a bit and try to explain what The Age of Aquarius is in context to or referenced to on the album. As it’s not Grandads trip to Woodstock or its English equivalent, The Isle of Wight Festival. There’s a deeper meaning implied here.

Now The Piscean Age was the waning astrological era of modern times. It’s over. The much lauded age of Aquarius has begun to settle in and hopefully the fishy claims of whatever was born in those dubious times can go to sleep, with the piscean races.  Spawning in 1995 the band have carried unholy dark matters through the ages, and keeping in the spirit of evil, their new album is an extension of their first intention.

Even better than Daylight Saving Time, Gloomy Grim have devised forty-five minutes of dank darkness to accommodate the age of enlightenment, with some true knowledge and understanding, where even the flames of hell will tremble at the rise of these rhythmic bass lines.   It’s elating to listen to such musical depravity, and it’s musical. The fighting cries of vocalist Agathon are the sound of Heavens’ angels torn asunder. His key work is solemn by its own and a natural force when lifting the guitar riffs higher where its morosity falls apart like broken ice into a frozen sagar.  Symphony and metal can be a hard ore to smelt.

Harsh and nasty riffs blast away that build tension that’s handled like macabre theater throughout the album. Softening only to spite the flamboyance of symphony with contouring riffs that are devilish and haunting. The breaks are abundant but never leave an uninteresting moment in time. However if you’d prefer something a little sweeter for your mental palette; warning: Satan inside.

Låttitlene røper innholdet, «A Lady In White», «One Night I Heard A Scream», “Light Of Lucifer Shine On Me”.

Acht Jahre nach ihrem letzten Album “Under The Spell Of The Unlight” veröffentlichen die gar nicht so finnisch klingenden Finnen GLOOMY GRIM ihr neues Studiowerk “The Age Of Aquarius”.

I. Les débuts

Vont-ils me féliciter ?

Elles sont toutes au rendez-vous ici : « Rise of the Great Beast », « The Mist », « Beyond the Hate » et « Trapped in Eternal Darkness ».

http://www.zwaremetalen.com/recensie/34701/Gloomy-Grim-The-Age-of-Aquarius.html

Now here’s a band I have prior experience with.

Introduced to them by a video appended to Bill Zebub’s original (and superior) version of Metalheads (and appearances on subsequent interview “documentaries” by the man thereafter), I’d long had the excellent Blood, Monsters, Darkness in the collection, with the rather more questionable (and far less melodic and keyboard-inflected) Grand Hammering gathering dust somewhere therein as well.

So here we are, a good 12 years on from Grand Hammering and nearly 20 years since Blood, Monsters, Darkness. They haven’t done much in the interim – only one album and an EP since 2004. How will things stand after such a remove?

Well, Juha “Agathon” Hintikka’s still present and accounted for, of course, as is the Grand Hammering rhythm section of Janne Ojala and Tomi “Nuklear Tormentorr” Tornqvist. Longstanding six stringer Jussi “Lord” Heikkinen is here as well. Not bad, there hasn’t been much turnover at all…

Hintikka’s vocal approach has changed, and fairly dramatically at that. Gone are the quirky black metal sprechtgesang snarls which set the band apart, with “Agathon” serving as a sort of sinister narrator of the dastardly doings being delineated herein. Instead, you get a far raspier take on his deep death growls alternating with a throatier but equally laryngital blackened roar.

It’s more Hammercult than Gloomy Grim, and likely the result of years of touring and the passage of time…but leaves the band, at least vocally, coming off as what feels like a far more generic affair than they were in their earlier days.

Even so, the sort of ooky spooky Tim Burton goes funereal feel of the band’s better days can still be discerned herein without a great deal of digging. The guitar and (far subtler and less pronounced) keyboard bits still suggest being treated to a creepy evening of dark storytelling rather than the usual touchpoints of black metal, with Age of Aquarius never really falling into the standard tropes of Norsecore, Watain wannabes, atonal black-death, blackened thrash or even bearing much akin to the real deal old school diehards who keep the scene’s flickering flame alive after all these years of bastardization and syncretism.

So in sum, this is still Gloomy Grim: neither the pointedly idiosyncratic and unique band who gave us Blood, Monsters, Darkness or the more aggressive, ersatz Crimson Moonlight with a touch of Roky Erickson sound of The Grand Hammering…but still recognizable as the same band underneath it all.

Hell, “the shameful kiss” even feels a bit like a modernized reworking of a Grand Hammering era outtake, so the apple hasn’t fallen far from the original tree.

Respect to the veterans, who still manage to retain enough of their individuality and weirdness to actually deserve it.

Online magazine review: http://www.metalimperium.com/2016/06/gloomy-grim-age-of-aquarius-review.html

It’s been a while since we’ve heard from the comically named Gloomy Grim but The Age of Aquarius has been worth the wait. The Scandi horror/black metal outfit have been around for a couple of decades. This is their sixth album although the first since 2008 release Under the Spell of the Sunlight. Much of their previous material was released via underground French label, Holy Records (Burzum, Nightfall) although the switch to the superb Satanath Records scarcely suggests any loosening of their satanic strings. Satanath actually made a point of releasing this horned beast of an album on 6/6/16 – that said the date would also have pretty much suited practically every other band on their roster!

Gloomy Grim’s name paints a fairly cold and unwelcoming picture and The Age of Aquarius fits pretty closely to that description. The classic black metal caterwauling is provided by Agathon, who created Gloomy Grim initially as a solo project just over 20 years ago. This eventually developed into a band with some impressively named members, none more so than bassist Nukklear Tormentorr. Agathon also drums with Finnish goth/black metal outfit Soulgrind but the focus here is on Gloomy Grim, and The Age of Aquarius in particular. The album is certainly listenable and has the requisite black metal ingredients while the songs themselves are well sculpted.

While the content is invariably dark and demonic the songs themselves flow effortlessly. ‘The Rise of the Great Beast’ is a marauding monster with a towering dominant chug that tops and tails this opener. Agathon has the kind of painstaking screeched delivery that could strip the paint off a new car straight off the production line. The mood is tense, the tempo mid-paced and some of the guitars spikier than a crown of thorns. The cold winds blow fiercer on ‘Germination’ in which Gloomy Grim adopt a thrashier stance and the barbed attacks are just as demonic sounding on ‘A Lady in White’. The dogs are well and truly set loose on ‘Beyond the Hate’ with guitars scratching away like flea ridden mongrels before Gloomy’s deep delivery bellows through the maelstrom.

On the slightly longer songs such as ‘One Night I Heard A Scream’ and ‘The Mist’ Gloomy Grim really allow the structure of the songs to develop, all bathed in a healthy dose of blood-splattered horror like a 70s gore flick. On ‘Time’ the cauldron starts to get hotter, with a spiraling twister of riffs conspiring to up the ante with a mid-song solo unleashed like a rampaging tiger as Gloomy cries out in his indomitable style, “This is the Age of Aquarius’.

If the dawning of the Age of Aquarius is meant to be a holistic peace and love combo, in Gloomy’s hands it becomes a blunt instrument with which to pummel you and by the time we reach ‘Light of Lucifer Shine On Me’ all semblance of decency and dignity has been shredded and stripped away as Gloomy Grim throw themselves over gleefully at the feet of Beelzebub, the crescendo given an added theatrical dimension through the presence of some snaking violins. No less impressive is final number, ‘Trapped in Eternal Darkness’, in which the walls close in on Agathon again in a frenzied and apocalyptic climax.

Finové Gloomy Grim v poslední +/- dekádě fungují dosti pochybným způsobem a jsou roky, kdy u nich neaktivita jednoznačně převažuje nad aktivitou.

Příprava „Under the Spell of the Unlight“ zabrala čtyři roky, během nichž Gloomy Grim nepředvedli nic kromě dvou promo počinů, z nichž minimálně jeden byl dost podivný (kapela jej vydala skrz torrenty… no, oukej). Po vydání „Under the Spell of the Unlight“ se však Gloomy Grim uložili k ještě delšímu zimnímu spánku – ten tentokrát zabral celých osm roků, během nichž se Finové opět zmohli jen na dvě kraťoučké nahrávečky, jejichž význam je nevalný. V jednom případě šlo stejně jako před „Under the Spell of the Unlight“ jen o pracovní verze nových písní, které se nakonec objevují i na letošní šesté desce „The Age of Aquarius“…

Ostatně i na minulém „Under the Spell of the Unlight“ Finové dokázali přijít alespoň s hitovkou „September – Invoking the Flames (Burn, Burn, Burn)“.

„The Age of Aquarius“ je ovšem takové nijaké, vlažné, obyčejné.

Metalové začátečníky, kteří teprve včera objevili Cradle of Filth, by mohly bavit i kusy jako „One Night I Heard a Scream“ či „Light of Lucifer Shine on Me“. Nicméně si myslím, že ani takovým lidem ještě bez vypilovaného kritického vkusu (to nemyslím zle, snad všichni jsme kdysi v kariéře posluchače metalu museli nějak začít) toho „The Age of Aquarius“ příliš nepředá.

Scolaretti.

Finnish Agathon started Gloomy Grim as a one-man band a little more than 20 years ago, and I regard the first feeble attempts more as promising than very successful albums. The ensemble soon increased in numbers and gradually grew in quality, and became known as one of the original horror metal bands. The band is now a quintet with members from Barathrum, Twilight Ophera, Denigrate, Soulgrind and more.

The band's melodic black metal with symphonic features has always focused on horror, either inspirations have been taken from film or reality.

Expand/Collapse

After the band's fifth and (till then) most elaborate work, released ten years after their debut, it became silent. Very quiet indeed. Calm before the storm. The Age Of Aquarius came as torrential blood-rains from a clear sky. Not just unexpected but unexpectedly good as well.

I'm not going to exaggerate my enthusiasm, but when a band is away from the spotlight for so long, they might as well take all the time they need, without it making much difference. There are no longer many who'll be excitedly anticipating new material. With unlimited time at their disposal, the expectations may increase when a new album is announced, and when Gloomy Grim meet these expectations, it's not all groundless that a sadistic smile spreads within the twelve o'clock shadow.

With song titles such as The Rise Of The Great Beast, One Night I Heard A Scream, Light Of Lucifer Shine On Me and Trapped In Eternal Darkness it's apparent that the band stays on narrow paths with sparse lighting, where the unspeakable, terrifying and diabolical reigns.

I have unfortunately not read the lyrics, but I have faith they will match the music. Based on conventional genres, the band plays melodic, fairly symphonic, black metal, with emphasis on the disturbing and satanic. The music has its roots firmly planted in the time around the millennium. Ten years ago, it seems synthetic orchestral black metal began to lose some of its spark. Gloomy Grim does nothing new, and thus doesn't “revitalize” the style, but they anew set “electric power on the corpse” for a genre that hasn't been as widely exercised over the recent years.

Through about 45 minutes, the band brings hostile and sinister eeriness. The ghosts that plague The Age Of Aquarius ain't just looking for cheap thrills by simply scaring occasional straying tourist. These malevolent spirits of death are out for blood. With effects like chilling piano and angry hissing vocals, barbed wires with razor blades as plectrum, thunderous bass, ominous rhythms and doomsday trumpets, the Finns again sends ice crystals through the blood stream.

“The Age of Aquarius” is the new album of Gloomy Grim, arriving 8 years after the last release of the Finnish black metal band. With a new guitarist Micko Hell, Agathon (who did vocals and keyboards) and his bandmates (Lord Heikkinen– Guitar, NukklearTormentorr– Bass, and Suntio – Drums) deliver another horror tale, balanced between dark melodies, and grim heavy guitars, creating a cinematographic dark ambient blended with death metal, that distinguish the band from all the rest of the black metal spectrum.

Limited to just 500 copies, we can hear in this new work songs like “The Rise of the Great Beast”, “Germination”, “A Lady in White”, “Beyond The Hate”, “The Shameful Kiss”, “The Mist”, and the highlight of the record “Light of Lucifer Shine on Me”. Recorded at D-studio, the production made the songs soundvery alike the previous release, and at some moments we feel that we’ve hear this somewhere before. The listener can hear a lot of ideas from the previous records mixed in these new songs, combined with the fury of the thrash metal at some points. This co-release by Satanath Records with Murdher Records, will not disappoint the ones that look for something fresh and different from the usual black metal. It could be melodic at times, but the heavy parts are really heavy, although the songs itself sound a bit slow at some moments.

I remember the first time I listened to GLOOMY GRIMS's 1998 debut album "Blood, Monsters, Darkness". It was a really interesting listen back in the day. Their brand of Black Metal had some kind of theatrical texture to it. In my humble opinion, a totally different take on this genre. Their second album, "Life?" didn't grab my attention. So I moved on and lost track of them. Three more albums came by (2001, 2004 and 2008) and after an 8 year hiatus, this Finnish symphonic Black metal band returns. "The Age Of Aquarius" sees GLOOMY GRIM expanding their sound. Their previous albums (yes, I made my homework and listened to them) featured a mid to slow paced symphonic Black Metal style, full of harmonic segments and (one too many) keyboard melodies. With this new album, their music has become a lot more aggressive, without loosing its identity. Agathon's vocals sound great here! His vocal performance reminded me of NAGLFAR's Jens Rydén in certain parts. I also welcomed the fact that the keyboards are now part of the music, instead of being a solo instrument as in their previous material. There is also a lot of intricate and complex work in these new songs. What I like the most is that the album has a lot of atmosphere. Although there are some pretty maniacal fast parts mixed in, the songs dwell in their usual mid paced melodic style. Finally, the production. A stellar production indeed. Thick guitars full of melodic tremolo riffs courtesy of J. Heikkinen and M. Huvinen, T. Törnqvist dense bass tone (that, surprisingly, stands out in the mix) and J.Ojala's excellent drum performance, which fits the music perfectly. A clear mix and a dynamic mastering process round up one hell of an album (pun intended). GLOOMY GRIM was one of those bands that I thought could become a lot better (and bigger) if given the right chance. And they have proven me right with this great release! Totally recommended album. Even if you are one of those "trve vnd kvlt" Black Metal fans, give GLOOMY GRIM a listen. The atmosphere alone will trap you in eternal darkness!

Suivez l’exemple de « The Rise Of The Great Beast ».

Out last June 6th 2016 was Gloomy Grim‘s ‘The Age Of Aquarius‘ album via Satanath Records and MurdHer Records.

Essentially a symphonic black metal album, Gloomy Grim uses also thrash metal and death metal to spice up the album which is well produced and interesting to listen.

Gloomy Grim started in 1995 in Finland as a one-man project and developed into being a band that led to five full-length releases and a period of silence before they came back with ‘The Age Of Aquarius‘.

Using the theme of horror expect to be transported from song to song into a whirlwind of fantasy and agony.

Sesto disco per i Gloomy Grim a ben otto anni dal precedente Under the Spell of the Unlight, mi capirete bene quindi se parlo del nuovo The Age of Aquarius come di “un nuovo inizio”.

Nascere, vivere e morire su andamenti scanditi, pronti ad abbracciarci subdoli (ascoltatevi a tal proposito A Lady In White) lungo quelle “strambe” e ben recitate atmosfere.

Oh may…GLOOMY GRIM! I thought that they had bitten the bitter end a long time ago. I remember them from the 90s when they were a part of a very vibrant and up and coming Finnish metal scene. And then there was nothing. Until now in 2016. This one I’m looking forward to hearing. I gotta admit that I don’t remember too well what they sounded like back in the days but this is black metal with a symphonic touch. Kinda like Cradle of Filth or early Dimmu Borgir. But with a touch of more primitive and basal black metal. as I don’t remember what they sounded like this is like hearing them for the first time but this album lived up to my expectations of something grand.

I gotta be honest, I really struggled with ‘Under The Spell Of The Unlit’, the 2008 release from Finnish symphonic black metal crew Gloomy Grim.

On spec, it pretty much ticked all the boxes, however despite the excellent playing and disturbing moments of atmosphere, its elaborate kitchen-sink delivery left me irritable. A good line in mood and storytelling was pretty much dashed by video game dramatics and Scooby-Doo tackiness.

Eight years later, with a single and demo release in the interim, have Gloomy Grim managed to rein in their wedding cake approach on sixth album ‘The Age Of Aquarius’?

Well yes, to begin with anyway.

Opening track ‘The Rise Of The Great Beast’ is surprisingly straightforward and upfront, with some Gorgoroth style chug and Agathon’s vocals switching from guttural to screech, and ‘Germination’ offers some thrilling thrash licks and urgent vox.

…So far, so good…

However, the piano intro of ‘A Lady In White’ hints at things to come, unfortunately.

Various time changes and unnecessary forms of instrumentation mean that even by ‘Beyond The Hate’, interest starts to wane, and lyrics that should invoke apprehension and fear (“I had an eerie feeling about The House”), come across as amateur and trite. While tracks such as ‘The Shameful Kiss’ and ‘The Mist’ show their fair share of dynamic, the persistent tempo swings make things hard going and Agathon’s Nattefrostian rasp starts to annoy.

Even the sinister, morbid drone and Paradise Lost feel of ‘Time’ is let down by yet another first-person diatribe, and ‘Light Of Lucifer Shine On Me’ appears to have an 86 piece orchestra on it for some reason.

…As for the 4 minute instrumental piano dirge that closes the album (that I keep expecting to morph into a version of John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’)…

No…just, No!

The real shame here with ‘The Age Of Aquarius’ is the ruined potential. With some cracking riffs and inspired touches losing the battle against over-complicated arrangements and lyrics that verge on black metal Jackanory.

Oh dear! It all started off so well…

The “Symphonic Black Metal” tag is sure to sour a few readers, but hear me out. I haven’t had the best time with Gloomy Grim’s discography, it gets a little on the hokey side, but The Age Of Aquarius is a surprising success. Why? Well, as much as it sucks to base one’s enjoyment of an album solely because it sounds like another…this sounds surprisingly like Old Man’s Child’s Born of the Flickering. Unfortunately, there isn’t a ton more I can say about this, but kudos to Gloomy Grim for emulating a super unappreciated sound.

Finnish Symphonic Black Metallers GLOOMY GRIM are back with their sixth album "The age of Aquarius". As they say, the band was never dead. The album is forty-five minutes long, consisting of 10 tracks. It probably is the darkest declaration of the commencement of the Aquarian age, marking the end of the Piscean which was the waning astrological era of modern times, now - over. The first track, “The Rise Of The Great Beast” is a rather melodic hymn with varying tempo, absolutely amazing guitars. Symphonic and heavy, a blast of a starter.”Germination” is yet another Melodic Black metal number. If you like bands like FRIGORIS, this won't disappoint you.

The third track, “A Lady In White,” has an amazing acoustic guitar solo. Beautiful orchestration, darkly classical. Gloomy as the band, the vocals sound like cries from the deepest circles of hell. This track is pure beauty! “Beyond The Hate” is studded with wintry piano and harsh guitar lines, the vocals are evil. The track consists of another excellent acoustic guitar solo. “One Night I Heard A Scream” is a bit on the Avant-Garde side with the howling of thrashy riffs and heavier growls. A hymn for the darkest of evils. “The Shameful Kiss” follows the same track with Progressive elements. Are you a fan of ORANSSI or FULLMOON BONGZAI? Do you like the psychedelic sugar cubes in your cup of black metal coffee? The Mist is a mid-tempo blend of such elements. Enjoy.

“Time” starts with the ticking of clocks, another mid-tempo track with ice cold riffs and a tint of ORANSSI again. “Light Of Lucifer Shine On Me” is the purest hymn for the dark lord (No not Voldemort) with orchestration so dark, the track itself is pure evil. The final chant, “Trapped In Eternal Darkness” is an instrumental song. Ethereal piano, ice cold symphonies from the wintry graves of stars, probably saying goodbye to the Piscean races on their eternal journey to the stars.

"The Age Of Aquarius" arriva a ben otto anni di distanza dal precedente "Under The Spell Of The Unlight" e ci presenta una realtà legata a quanto prodotto in passato, seppur con qualche variazione degna di nota.

Of Lucifer Shine On Me".

Imprescindible.

Unless you have never come across Gloomy Grim before, Black Metal - both symphonic and thrashy, at times even punky, is where these grim bastards have set their sights. Musically, Gloomy Grim are pretty unpredictable on this album: at one moment they may attack you with full blackened force, and then all of a sudden they may calm down and go somewhere into the Gothic world, all without losing the main focus of their malignant and eerie keyboard-orientated Black Metal. And now that I've mentioned the keys, keyboardist Agathon also has one of the most deranged Black Metal voices I've heard in a while. Think of Dimmu Borgir's Shagrath. My own Black Metal mojo just got harder hearing Agathon screaming and shrieking like a horny satanic goat in a satanic estrous cycle. The song "Time" is vicious as fuck; a nightmarish trip that goes beyond and back to reality, whereas "Light of Lucifer Shines on Me" leads you towards a darkly lit, almost King Diamond-ish type of spooky corner.

Damn, I just noticed it's been 8 long years since Gloomy Grim's previous thematic album, Under the Spell of the Unlight, came out. Fortunately, the band's new album was worth that long wait.

Например Blood, Monsters, Darkness или Written in Blood.

The Age of Aquarius

Gloomy Grim «The Age of Aquarius».

Долгих восемь лет тишины предшествовали выходу нового альбома, после релиза предшественника «Under the Spell of the Unlight».

Альбома открывает трек с эпическим «The Rise of the Great Beast», который полностью соответствует эпитету «эпик». «A Lady in White»,

Gloomy Grim.
