Nazghor  are  a  band  from  Sweden  that  plays  a  very  raw  and  melodic  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their 2016  album  "Death's  Withered  Chants"  which  was  released  by  Satanath  Records.

A  very  dark  sounding  synth  starts  off  the  album  giving  the  music  more  of  a  ritualistic  feeling  and  after  awhile  thunder  sounds  and  female  vocals  are  added  onto  the  recording  and  after  the  intro  the  music  goes  into  a  very  fast,  raw  and  melodic  black  metal  direction  along  with  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats.

All  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  angry  and  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  you  can  also  hear  a  lot  of  tremolo  picking  in  the  faster  riffs and  some  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  acoustic  guitars  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  there  is  also  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts  and  samples  and  synths  also  make  a  return  on  a  later  track  and  some riffs  also  bring  in  a  touch  of  thrash  and  melodic  vocals  are  added  onto  the  last  track.

Nazghor  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  raw  and  melodic  and  also  continues  the  Swedish  tradition  of  the  genre,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Anti  Cosmic  Satanism  and Devil  Worship  themes.

In  my  opinion  Nazghor  are  a  very  great  sounding  raw  and  melodic  satanic  black  metal  band  and if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Requiem  Black  Mass"  "Road  To  Dead  Meadows"  "Complete Unholyness"   and  "Death's  Withered  Chant".

Perhaps the first thing to observe about Nazghor’s new album Death’s Withered Chant is that it’s this Swedish band’s fifth full-length in four years, and like the band’s last three albums it’s roughly an hour long. With so much music being released in such a comparatively brief time, one might wonder how good it could be. We’re bringing you today a full stream of the album, so you’ll have a chance to decide that for yourselves — but I think it’s fantastic.

The songwriting is highly accomplished, with every song carrying evocative, frequently majestic melodies that beckon the listener back, and stylistically, the music should appeal to a wide range of fans. It includes the kind of aggressive melodic riffing that should appeal to fans of Scandinavian death metal and the kind of epic, sweeping melodies that should attract adherents of Northern European pagan metal, while preserving the truly venomous vocals, the infernal atmospherics, and the blood-freezing bursts of savagery that are rooted in black metal.

As on previous albums, Nazghor begin this one with a solemn introduction — a moody but majestic piece performed with the sounds of a cathedral organ. As before, another largely instrumental piece comes in the album’s seventh track (with a somber piano melody over a low droning sound, followed by a ritual drumbeat and demonic moaning and roaring). And once again, the band save the title track for the end — and this time it’s a 10-minute song that’s different from most of the other songs, and might be the most gripping one on the album.

The use of a cathedral organ track to open the album is a fitting choice, because the entire record sounds as if it was recorded within the high walls and beneath the distant overhead vault of a great  temple. The guitars frequently echo and reverberate, and the songs often include grand, sweeping melodies — both warlike and sorrowful — that bring that cliched word “epic” to mind quite readily. (Indeed, while the band have drawn comparisons to the likes of early Dissection and Watain, Stronghold-era Summoning should be in the discussion as well.)

Another selling point of Death’s Withered Chant is that although the band have created a coherent and distinctive sound, they have still included a lot of variety in the album and have arranged the songs so that they tend to flow into each other, making the album as a whole the kind of listening experience that merits the term “a journey”. And just to give an example of the contrasts:

Anders Strokirk of Necrophobic adds death metal growls to complement Nekhrid’s usual bestial snarls and howls in “Craft of the Nihilist”, which also includes a swirling, folk-styled melody and rocking beats.”Inheritance of the Cross”, on the other hand, becomes a ferocious, swirling hurricane of sound, with serpentine soloing and eventually a flurry of hard-jabbing riffs and earthquake drumming (though even this furious track has its stately, epic moments).

And then there’s that title song. It’s a slow, mesmerizing track, built upon an indelible, repeating keyboard melody that wouldn’t be out of place on an album by Lustre, and it also includes soaring clean voices in addition to some of the most wrenching, anguished, harsh vocals on the album. But even as panoramic and evocative as this magnetic song is, it’s still plenty heavy.

In short, this is one of those albums that despite its length really holds the interest all the way through. And in addition to working well as a unified collection of music, each of the songs also stands strongly on its own. We’re very happy to bring it to you in full below.

Swedens Black Metal horde NAZGHOR return with their brilliant new opus “Death's Withered Chants", which will be unleashed digitally in March and in CD format some time in April. Active since only three years now, the band releases their fifth output already and still seems to be able to increase their songwriting abilities. Presenting themselves on their creative peak, the ten tracks belong to the best melodic Black Metal songs I have been listening to during the last couple of months. After a fulminant intro in form of ‘Hymnum Mortis’ with choral chants the band starts their Black Metal thunderstorm with the brilliant opener ‘Requiem Black Mass’ and once demonstrates, that they definitely belong to the Black Metal elite of Europe. Precise and freezing riffing of the hellish duo Armageddor and Angst, perfect fitting drumming (I assume once again from their drum machine Rimfrost) and the distinctive vocals of mastermind Nekhrid, who really has an outstanding and unique voice and an own way of singing with an unique flow, so only after some seconds it is crystal clear that NAZGHOR strikes back again. They only made slight changes in their sound compared to the last two albums but their abilities to write real hymns with more brilliant melodies have grown once again. ‘Under A Venomous Spell’ is a really killer track with an outstanding melody line and one of the best hymns the band has written so far. ‘Craft Of the Nihilist’ emerged in collaboration with Anders Strokirk of NECROPHOBIC and is another outstanding track before ‘Road To Dead Meadows’ once again offers a really timeless hymn. Of course the remaining tracks are on a similar high level as no filler can be found on this new album. Hopefully the planned mini tour through Germany and Poland will help to introduce NAZGHOR to a wider audience as with their quality they can easily compete with better known bands like bands like NECROPHOBIC or DARK FUNERAL. Online magazine review: http://www.voicesfromthedarkside.de/Albums-EPs-Demos/N/NAZGHOR--10253.html

Death's Withered Chants sounded quite slaying based on the very first previews, but turned out to be no small challenge when attempting to penetrate deeper into the matter.

On the fifth full-length since their inception in 2012, no less, the Swedes offer approximately 55 minutes of melodic, but fierce black metal with a somewhat special sound; resounding, round and bright.

At my first casual meeting with the album, it was thus a harbinger of potentially good melodies and moods, draped in a black shroud. Whence the album were to be digested, something ended up being stuck in my throat. Admittedly not chronic, but still. The rounded soundscape provides an atmospheric touch that is not entirely in sync with the music. As if Skogen were to play a cover of Dissection in a reasonable monotonous and soaring way.

Nazghor's music has admittedly a rather atmospheric mood in itself, but the sound feels a little too round and hovering, which disarms the aggression and pacifies the coldness of the music. The melodies also blend the ice cool with feelings touching on contentment.

After several spins, and especially in the right setting, things came more or less into good shape, even if I could never completely fathom Death's Withered Chants. The melodic aspect measure up, and both guitars and bass does their utmost to keep the listeners attention through an excessively long album. The vocals are at the forefront and snarl angrily, and the music's got good drive and a lot of great melodies. Sadly, the sound lacks a little punch and coldness, while an ever so tiny hint of post-metal creeps into the expression. At least, that's about how it feel when I'm not in the most receptive corner.

I do have a taste for the album, though. There's a lots of good music here. Sometimes, especially late at night, when calmness has descended, and music of a bit more quiet, dark and atmospheric kind would hit home even more, the album may really come into its own. In the daytime, when I'm wide awake and ready for an energetic powder keg of music, this just doesn't sit perfectly. In the daytime I would have said that a weak approval is issued under doubt. Now that the darkness of night has enshrouded me, I'm practically willing to raise the ranking. Maybe it's just me there's something wrong with.

If Nazghor were to drop the careless, aerial post-monotony and the swaying moods in favour of hatred and darkened aggression, I think it's likely my second personality would be more content the next time. Not a bull's eye, mayhap, but definitely no bummer.

Hopefully I've triggered your curiosity, for the mystery concerning Death's Withered Chants' inherent qualities, and its effect on you, can only be solve by you, so take the embedded album for a spin.

A newly formed theory in my mind is that if you look at some of the rather calm and middling stuff I've been absorbing lately, my subconsciousness might just be overripe for some ace energetic kick ass aggression. Maybe I'm just a bit restless(?)

Nazghor - Death´s Withered Chants (Satanath Records 2016).

Nazghor write music for true worshippers of occult black metal, as “Death’s Withered Chants” is a gruesome display of total Chris-fucking debauchery at its most insane.

These guys are bound to possess your soul with their blackened extreme metal, then drag you down to the red glowing pits of hell and brimstone. You should prepare to burn here, as the savage antics of their black metal hell is unrelentingly punishing to all humanly senses, and the music here is just the beginning to the listener’s bloody nightmare come true. The haunting atmospherics on this ten-song opus is quite well written, with plenty of melancholia and extreme hatred for all that is holy and god-related.

The synthesizer atmospherics, which represent whole orchestra-like passages are skillfully written and executed here, which defines what Nazghor is all about. They’re not the most unique of black metal bands I’ve heard, but they play with so much conviction and passion within their songs, you’re truly led to believe that everything holy is the core problem of humanity’s failure at creating a better world. This part of their music alone makes up for the band’s shortcoming as a more unique extreme metal band.

This album is not the type of record the listener can get into with one listen, but with repeated plays, these guys will grow on your unholy tastes in everything that is completely evil in life. With every spin, you’re prone to hear many more influences within Nazghor’s music, thus making “Death’s Withered Chants” truly a cult release. Listen to this band own your own accord, as it cannot be guaranteed that afterwards you’ll be alive to talk about your wildest and most profound demonic experiences Nazghor unleashes… Check it out and prepare to die…

Despite being active for four years only (they were founded in 2012), Uppsala, Sweden-based Nazghor now team up with their fifth recording, after Life Impaled (2013, Nebular Winter Productions / Dead Center Productions), Upon The Darkest Season (2014, Dead Center Productions, also re-released on tape afterwards), Through Darkness And Hell (2014, Metallic Media) and Diabolical Teachings (2015, a co-release of Metallic Media and Black Plague Records). These latter labels (Metallic Media and Black Plague Records) often work together with Satanath Records, so that might explain why Nazghor signed to this Russian label.

I do consider last year’s Diabolical Teachings as one of the most impressive releases from 2015, so I was quite excited when listening to this fifth album the first time (as well as the second and third time, by the way). It comes in an edition of 500 copies in co-operation, this time, with Germany’s Obscure Abhorrence Productions, but I can’t find any information about studio or producer / mixer / engineer. Not that it does matter actually…

Death’s Withered Chants opens with a short intro, a classical piece with organ, quite sad, quite grieving, like a church’s funeral, accompanied by the sounds of thunder, and towards the end an angelic female voice. Nice, but the real stuff starts with Requiem Black Mass, which is like a modern purification of what once started twenty, twenty-five years ago in Scandinavia. Nazghor’s Black Metal is totally rooted in the vein of the more epic and melodic trend from Sweden, and then I’m referring to the era of the first half of the nineties. The whole is extremely guitar-oriented, with multiple layers of guitar melodies, twin riffing and many, excellently executed tremolo leads. That goes for the whole album, and it makes Death’s Withered Chants maintaining a high level of bravery and interest throughout this fifty-five minutes’ march-towards-glory. I would like to use this description, ‘march-towards-glory’, to give an impression of the atmosphere: proud, epic, fearless. The Viking blood runs through the members’ veins… I once read in an interview that Bathory was a source of inspiration for the band (evidently, for Bathory were, are, and forever will be, the ultimate masters of our scene! Hail Quorthon… Oops, sorry, I was losing myself in melancholy, eternal remembrance of a Hero, but now I’m back into self-control). Music-wise Nazghor do not sound like Bathory at all, but just like that Swedish Kult-act, Nazghor are able to combine the victorious heart of epic glory with hammering heaviness. Blood, fire and death, if you want to… It’s not only the guitar parts that make this band so outstanding. The rhythm section is quite an important aspect of this band’s presence too. There’s so much majesty in the heaviness, and still a certain elegance that focuses on supportive coherence rather than brute violence. Especially within the most slashing pieces, such as Inheritance Of The Cross, the drum patterns are lift up towards highest peaks. But one cannot ignore the truly shrieking, piercing, morbid vocals, spitting acid and venomous flames of hatred. Julian (aka Nekhrid) for sure has one of the most powerful throats from Swedish soil.

Despite lacking originality, it is nice to hear quite some variation. This goes, of course, for the great diversity in tempo. And to be honest, sometimes a band gets better in their faster pieces, then again when slowing down. Nazghor, however, shine in both extremes (and everything in between, evidently). The title track even touches funereal angles, believe me… But another undeniably important and extraordinary aspect is the addition of stuff like some epic choirs (did I mention the words ‘Viking’ and ‘Bathory’ before?), acoustic guitar introductions and intermezzi, or subtly, well-supportive synth passages once in a while. Those elements too make a non-original recording profoundly interesting. …besides the fabulous song writing and splendid execution, but that’s quite evident…

http://www.concreteweb.be/reviews/nazghor

Nazghor was born during the winter of 2012, hailing from the deepest abyss of Uppsala, Sweden, this horde was created by vocalist Nekhrid and guitarist Armageddor with only one purpose to bring a pure, raw but yet melodic black metal and deliver a closer view of satanism in form of a darker, ceremonial, and ritualistic show, the dark message of Tartaros is delivered by unholy words that shroud the starry skies, the band is conformed by guitarist Angst who was recruited, from the ashes of an old group of dedicators, and later on bassist Crowlech joined the legion, currently during their live rituals they count with a guest drummer.

I have to admit it, previously "Diabolical Teachings" which was released last year, never before I had heard of them or listen any early recordings. So when I find them it was a gratifying experience, the kind of black metal this guys are able to bring is ripping, stinging with blasphemous tremolo picking guitars as hell itself, thunderous blast beat, very well accentuated by disturbingly and devilish high pitch vocals, that's what we can get from their fifth and latest album "Death's Withered Chants", it's defiant to the mainstream black metal of nowadays.

Nazghor sounds impressive not only for the fact that they are Swedish, they gathered enough elements of the whole scene to blend and give us their most brilliant work to date, the record opens with a beautiful intro "Hymnum Mortis" built in organ notes to inflict an eerie and funebre ambience, intensified by chants and thunderstorms followed by the rabid and fulminant "Requiem Black Mass" which set everything over the table and prove why this band, has reached so quickly the top underground scene, with such melodies and brutality it's inarguably the creativity and conviction they have, "Under the Venomous Spell" subtle start that turns into a storm very intense almost reaching a sublime point for the driven speed used by the drums with it blast beat that shatter harmoniously, flashing guitar riffs and the ominous vocals make of this track one of the best, Anders Strokirk from (Necrophobic) make a guest appearance in the track number four "Craft of the Nihilist" giving the proper vocal style, owning an overwhelming guitar solo, while the drum patterns seems to be unstoppable, "Road to Dead Meadows" has a singular entity and never step back for a second in the ferociously and speed delivered, track after track you can find out how meticulously are this guys "Inheritance of the Cross" falls into a blackened riffing, while "Aeternum Regno Diaboli" add a droning passage in the album, only to unleash the devils towards the end "Complete Unholyness" is very raw and combine exceptionally from fast pace to semi-slow pace adding an epic mood, "Empire of Graves" does not lack of intensity, until we get to the last track "Death's Withered Chants" it reaches a little over ten minutes, from afar you can perceives a thunderstorm which seems to start where the intro left, then a slow pace takes over with heavy and mesmerizing dark melodies, lofty backing vocals gives a stunning perspective to the whole environment, by the end you will hardly notice the length of the album due to the excellent flow of the tracks.

In summary this album takes a hell within the songwriting, the ceaseless raw but melodic black metal recalls bands like Dissection, Dark Funeral, Necrophobic or Dark Fortress just to mention few top bands of the genre, however the strongest critics could fall more upon the band genuineness, because many will point there is nothing new here, but cohesiveness and effectiveness are a must to stand out, they succeed to enthrall the listener for almost one hour, track after track you will feel a torrential flow of melodic aggression as you have not felt it for a while, indisputably a serious contender to add in the end year list.

Stay True… Stay Metal… Stay Brutal...

Death's Withered Chants by the Swedish band NAZGHOR, is one of those black metal albums that you just can't get enough of. The entire album is well orchestrated. Every track is distinguishable, even though each song kind of carries on to the next. The lyrics are dark and delivered with blood curdling vocals. The drums and guitar riffs come together perfectly. Although I enjoyed the whole album, 'Inheritance of the cross' and 'Under a venomous spell' are my personal favorite tracks. After listening to the album in full three times today, NAZGHOR has peaked my interests in black metal. Even if you're a death metal fan, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Swedish black metal that manages to actually tap into what made bands like Watain or Dark Funeral work in their early days (or in the case of the latter, now again) rather than just a soullessly slavish regurgitation of an increasingly barren strain of stylistic flourishes.

I’d call this a lot closer to the Blackmoon era of Dark Funeral than Watain even at their best, with strong inflections of the melodicism of Where Shadows Forever Reign or classic Dissection elevating this to an even higher level than those signposts and markers might suggest.

These guys are a pretty busy bunch of worker bees, dropping no less than five actual albums inside of their whopping three years in existence (say huh?!?) Normally that’s a bad sign – quantity seldom runs equivalent to quality (and in fact generally tends to work in an inverse ratio), but if they’re going to deliver melodically oriented Swedish black metal at this level of quality, fuck it, keep ’em coming.

Very, very good for the type. Profound hails.

Bitte weiter so!

Nazghor's latest album is a thing of melancholy and unholy beauty. The atmosphere drew me in, and seemed to make time fly by. The organ-filled opening track, Hymnum Mortis, sets the scene for a ritual of a different sort.

For me, a highlight of the album was the guitarists’ composing ability. These guys have a talent for riff craft. Armageddor and Angst create riffs which are interesting enough to hold up over long musical passages, but they also know when variation is needed. I felt that their talents reached their zenith on the tracks “Under a Venomous Spell”, “Craft of the Nihilist” and “Road to Dead Meadows”. While the sound is familiar, the songs are well-written and contain interesting transitions, which are ushered in by riff changes, or drum fills. On a more general note, there are touches of a melodic sound throughout the album, with clean solos and piano or synth parts making an appearance. All these elements work harmoniously together, and are well-placed in the mix.

Something I’ve always enjoyed about black metal is its ability to create a palpable atmosphere through the music. “Aeternum Regno Diaboli” is a haunting track with ghostly chanting which sounds like it’s coming from a cavernous cathedral (or crypt). I was instantly reminded of a scene from the novel “The Ghosts of Sleath”, in which a long-dead knight seemingly rises from his stone tomb. Closer “Death’s Withered Chants” created a distinct feeling of the inevitability of the cycle of life and death. In contrast to the other tracks, this one has more clean vocals (which harmonise with a falsetto part) and a sombre, slow piano melody. Vocalist Nekhrid also brings the usual black metal rasps in this track, which he does with feeling. He is equally adept in both vocal styles.

When I first read up about NAZGHOR, I was expecting a raw, heavily distorted sound, but I enjoyed that the reality was rather different from my expectations. This album is well-crafted, and feels shorter than ten tracks because of the atmosphere which draws you in and distorts time.

Out last April 15th 2016, was “Death’s Withered Chants” by Nazghor via Satanath Records and Obscure Abhorrence Productions.

A black metal act from Sweden, Nazghor is the order below the government of Tartaros and it is the legion of Satan Soldiers of the throne of darkness.

Besides that, they are a quintet of cool dudes who do great black metal and “Death’s Withered Chants” is their fifth full-length album. The production is good and they play with melody and powerful vocals.

For fans of black metal in the veins of Watain and Dissection, “Death’s Withered Chants” by Nazghor is available on Bandcamp.a

I sometimes wonder how bands pick their name. Does it come to them in a dream or do they pick it from a book. Do they get it through a black mass? A name like NAZGHOR isn’t just thought up. It must come from somewhere. This is black metal in the same vein as Dawn. One of the best black metal albums ever made is Dawn’s “Slaughtersun”. NAZGHOR’s black metal is nowhere near as great as Dawn’s is. This is rather typical Swedish black metal. But since I like that kind of black metal I find this album highly entertaining. This stands out enough to make me take notice.

Nazghor is a band from Sweden founded in 2012, and ''Death's withered chants'' is their fifth full length album. Beautiful melodies submerged in dense and obscurely melancholic atmosphere of this band are impressive. The album was released via Satanath Records in 2016.

''Hymnum Mortis'' is an intro with organs magically intertwined with female voice, like a gate to the storm of beautiful and melodic tremolo melodies, characterizing each song and making them easily memorable. A variety of motives is noted, ranging from the gloomy chord decompositions, slow black metal riffs that are alternating and shifting with with the faster ones, and all of it is decorated with discreet smoothness of keyboards, ranging from organs that I've mentioned, strings, piano, choirs, and even harpsichord in the background of a doom riff  in '' Death's withered chants ''. The song is having the Summoning-like atmosphere, and clean vocals mixed with chanting in the background leave a great impression. It ends with the sound of heartbeats, beating weaker and just stopping, leaving an eerie silence completing the album. Excellent motive of which really gave me chills. Thrash riff in the middle of the ''Requiem black mass'' is a great way to avoid the monotony of repeating the previous parts of the tremolo based arrangements, and the '' Empire of graves'  also has excellent thrash riff, born isolated in a sudden break ''Under a venomous Spell'' begins with smooth soloing on clean guitars, and ''Complete unholiness '' has a clean guitar part, from which the solo twirls like a flame. ''Inheritance of the cross'' has an intro taken from some movie, introducing us to the Khold-like crushing mid tempo riff. '' Aeternum Regno Diaboli'' is an instrumental based on melancholic piano melody giving birth to  dreadful sounds that sound like awakening an ancient demonic creature.

Recommended for fans of Angantyr, Sorhin and some DSBM bands that craft and nourish epic, majestic and most memorable melodies.

This album is starting off with an intro played by an organ. Don't know what to expect... Wait, wait!

Ha, melodic Swedish Black Metal it is. Respecting Dissection's heritage has never been a turn-off for me. In fact, it is more like the opposite, really. That's what this quintet named Nazghor from Uppsala, Sweden, does on their fifth album, Death's Withered Chants. The band was formed in 2012 and they are already on their fifth album.

On Death's Withered Chants, Nazghor perform their melody-infested, raw, and melancholic Black Metal in such a sweet way, propelling their Dissection-esque elements well throughout their entire material. They don't employ those elements as masterfully and in such an idea-rich way as Mr. Nödtveidt did when he still walked among us, but the influences are there. Overall the band's Black Metal flows well, and the songs have many catchy and melodic harmonies tangled in them, offering real ear candy for all the fans of this genre. In spite of the fact that they keep their songs lengthy with an average length being between 5-6 minutes, they do know how to make them work properly. On the title track, they have even stretched the song's length over 10 minutes, but they did it for the right reasons. "Death's Withered Chants" is a true standout song. It is a slow-paced, moody, and dark song full of melancholic writing.

Get Death's Withered Chants if you are a fan of first-class Swedish melodic Black Metal. This might be something for you.

Life Impaled — 2013, Upon the Darkest Season — 2014, Through Darkness and Hell — 2014, Diabolical Teachings — 2015, Death's Withered Chants — 2016.

Howl From The Coffin Festival 2017.
