Short, evil and utterly remorseless, this nasty split release from Cult of the Horns and Goatvermin is a sadistic trip into the world of blackened thrash from two demonic masters of their art. Cult of the Horns is based in France and is the work of Mephisto. Relatively new, Cult of the Horns first appeared in 2013 and has, to date, released only a demo and this split release. Goatvermin also hail from France but have a longer history, having released three demos and two split EPS. Both bands, however, share an indomitable spirit and the split is characterised by the raw tinny production favoured by some black metal artists and an atmosphere of abject horror and untold bleakness.
Kicking off the proceedings we get Cult of the Horns, whose short intro is the stuff of nightmares. The EP kicks into gear with the searing black metal fall out of ‘Annihilate the fucking mass’ which is short and brutally misanthropic. With the drums relegated to a building somewhere in the vicinity of the recording studio, the emphasis here is firmly on fizzing guitars and vocals torn from the very bowels of hell. It’s pure old school black metal, harking back to Venom and early Celtic Frost and it’s delivered with unwavering conviction and a complete rejection of modern recording techniques. ‘Oppression’ is a longer, darker piece. A doom laden trawl through some shit-stained sewer, it speaks only of the bleakness of existence and the inevitability of some widespread nuclear conflagration at the hands of those in power. It’s a cool track, heavy and grinding, and it highlights the potential that Cult of the Horns have. The final track from Cult of the Horns is ‘soldiers of doom – the nuclear front’, a furious thrash assault that is brutally unhinged. There is a no-holds-barred track and Cult of Horns impress as they slaughter humanity’s hopes with their bloody attack.
Goatvermin have a mere three tracks, but they waste no time launching into a white hot meltdown of blackened riffs. The production is a massive step down from Cult of the Horns and the closest point of comparison, production wise, would be the early darkthrone demos released as the ‘frostland’ tapes. ‘Mille Pretres mille putes mille gosses mille vierges’ is neither pretty nor clear, but, like the ‘frostland tapes’, there’s a certain fascination in discerning the band’s primitive clatter beneath the layers of white noise and static, and undoubtedly there’ll be purist black metal fans out there who will love the sheer rawness of it all. Better is the crushing ‘Atrocious citadel’ which, whilst still sounding like it was recorded in a kettle, has a furious riff that still manages to sear even without the benefit of anything resembling production. Finally we get the furious buzzing of ‘Decimation / holocauste’ which is similarly delivered with a venom that is all the more unnerving for not being clearly identifiable.
A split EP that focuses on black metal at its rawest, this is a niche release indeed and most people will find it entirely repugnant. This is, of course, partially the point and for those who like their black metal to be entirely free of any concessions to commercialism, this is as anti-commercial as it gets, red of claw and furiously independent. For those who like the darkest, sickest music, this split EP is for you. For anyone who prefers concession to melody, steer well clear. This EP deserves either -1 or 666 points, depending upon which side of the fence you sit. Utterly unhinged.
Сплит - это лучшая вещь, для того, чтобы узнать нечто новое, послушать в достойном качестве толковые группы, которые тоже используют такие формы самовыдвижения в целях массового распространения своих безумных идей. И это работает - само собой. Есть даже люди, которые тотально скупают профильные сплиты. Все таки сплит это в некотором смысле более андерграундная вещь, чем рядовой полноформат)).
Загадочный сплит от Satanath Records. Он франко-французский, но на этом мистицизм только начинается. Дело в том, что вторая группа - без указанных участников. Кто, что - неизвестно. На архивах ничего нет. Так что, «но коммент». Но музыку, конечно, будем слушать. Это блаковый сплит, так что чернота здесь запрограммирована творцами, к оной надо и приуготовиться.
Cult of the Horns - это соло проект Мефисто, который кроме того участвует в Old Quantum, а ранее играл в Natremia. Здесь же он решил исполнить все сам. Таким образом, видимо, воплотив те идеи, которые не удается реализовать в другом месте. Мы все знаем, что франция - родина хорошего (и многочисленного) блака, и потому вправе ожидать мощного релиза. Не зря же Сатанат все это затеял. К слову, этот мрачнейший диск произведен совместно с французской конторой Ira Militias Productions, и российской Dark East Production. Официальной дистрибуцией занимается белорусский значок GrimmDistribution.
Мефисто в формате проекта Cult of the Horns уже успел в 14-ом году выпустить чернейшее демо. Под подходящим названием «Ненависть и осквернение». После этого во франции осталось мало людей, которые не поняли, что к чему.
Cult of the Horns, начав с оперного вступления, записанного, кажется, в опере живьем с помощью диктофона, продолжил многозначительным мистериозным шумом с привлеченными голосами.
Вот такие малотрадиционное интро. Ну, а потом началось именно то, ради чего Мефисто собрал сам себя для записи и глумления над человечеством — черный метал — труйный, адовый и репресивный до корней поседевших от ужаса волос. Борзая и мид-темпо структура - гитарная ураганная расщепленная атака, оформленная галопирующей ритм-секцией. Далее - объемная предыстория, которую, обыкновенно, не ждешь в тру блаке (вообще качество звука — хорошее). И подключение самых темнейших хелл-драйверов. Я понимаю — потраковая запись — о чем речь, но здесь совершенно не чувствуется, что это записал один человек. Дело в том количестве злобы и окропленной кровью ненависти, что сосредоточено здесь на кубометр пространства произведения. А тут, кроме прочего, как раз идут две компо на пять минут, здесь творец может развернуться и дать волю своим эмоциям. Мефисто зловеще скрежещет своим голосом, что добавляет истинного демонизма в эту субстанцию. При том он то поднимается из основного звуко-холокоста, как бы вдыхая потемневший воздух, а потом ныряет в это чудовищное варево, расталкивая горячечный черный саунд своим ревом и, главное, входя в этот сатанинский конгломерат совершенно на тех же правах, например, как партия гитары. Это придает произведениям толику подвального пекельного угара и мясорубочного привкуса. Точно. Это позволяет Мефисто управлять процессом внутри, держа, так сказать, руку на пульсе, а своим стылым скримом, который к концу 4 песни превратился в гроул, окручивать все свои траки как стальной проволокой. Кстати, насчет гроула и структурированости — видимо, некоторые смертельные позывы дали основания именовать стилистику как блак-дэт. Что не испортит удовольствие труйным людям.
А вот Goatvermin уничтожает веру в человечество начиная с 09-го года. И немало преуспел в этом. Три демки, компиляция, два сплита - вот достаточно полный список доказательств их чертопоклонничества.
Музыканты Goatvermin совершено правильно делает, что скрываются от репортеров, как в прочем и от миллионов верующих французских граждан.
Дело в том, они реализуют здесь еще более труйную схему, что составляет дело гордости для Сатанант рекордс и прочих, ответственных за выпуск. Стоит на это обратить особое внимание. Ибо в отличном качестве эта богохульная структура представляет собой самый настоящий кирпич из стены дома сатаны. По первому впечатлению - это тоталитарный блак метал, мало упорядоченный и вырывающийся из под лазерного луча вашего воспроизводящего си-ди-плайера, как иллюстрация обыкновенного извержения вулкана. Целенаправленность и ее энергетика компенсирует тут ВСЕ. Собственно и музмасса настолько здесь перекручена, что мало отличается от лавы. Само собой, нормальный блакер прекрасно идентифицирует этот шизофренический коллаж. Мощность данных трех траков по своей полной сумме очень велика, потому рекомендуется слушать их попервоначалу, мысленно не препарируя их, а только потом, попривыкнув к беснованию, рассматривать эти адские артефакты более внимательно.
Две хелл-команды из Франции рвут повседневное бытование в клочья. Это суровая реальность. И многие решатся опробовать номинированный продукт, ибо такой диск похож на расширяющуюся пробоину в прежде казавшейся прочной скале, откуда воняет серой и доносятся звуки преисподней. Упустить такой шанс? Труйная франция ломится в тартарары. Думаю, не так и много дисков осталось с 14-го года.
Let's wallow in a cesspool of musical filth for a while, a bit over twenty-four minutes to be exact. After all, the deep underground of the metal scene shows some obscure but mesmerizing acts, shrouded in a fog of mystery, blasphemy and misantropy. Here is where the dark heart of the world of metal beats, and bloody fast too.
French horde Cult Of The Horns open this split with an intro that sounds like an opera played on a walkman with flat batteries. Immediately after, they deliver their intense, punk-driven blackened metal with sheer ferocity. These songs are primitive, raw and extreme, a bit like the old Candlelight albums form the nineties. Cult Of The Horns don't care for elaborate song structures or soundscapes or atmospheric stuff. They just want to blast, which they do quite well.
Goatvermin doesn't even need an intro. They blast away immediately with their blackened grind version of Dismember. The sound of the guitars is quite similar but the music as a whole is chaotic, neurotic and vile, which is a compliment of course. For three torturing, ever changing songs, Goatvermin drowns the listener in something utterly twisted and downright vulgar, which also is a compliment. Believe me, this is quite a good representatation of our current society.
Anyway, if you're a sucker for the putrid underground stuff, you should get your hands on this album. It rarely gets more extreme than this.

Eine coole Split-CD legen hier diese beiden französischen Underground Black Metal-Bands hin. Nach einem Intro eröffnen Cult Of The Horns mit drei Nummern den blasphemischen Reigen. Dieses Soloprojekt wurde erst 2013 gegründet. Vor dieser Split-CD gab es lediglich ein Demo mit sieben Songs, von denen einer ein Intro und einer ein Beherot-Coversong waren. Und so klingt das hier auch. Mit dumpfem und schwammigen Sound geht es im Stil von Proclamation, Embrace Of Thorns oder Necroholocaust stupide nach vorne los. Und genauso klingen auch Goatvermin. Hat man je etwas anderes von einer Band erwartet, die so heißt? Nein, oder? Drei Demos, eine Compilation mit allen Demos, ein Split-Tape mit UHL und eben diese Split-CD gibt es von diesem Projekt, dessen Besetzung gänzlich unbekannt ist. Selbst im Booklet steht nichts außer den vier Songtiteln. Das ist Underground! Normalerweise stehe ich voll auf so eine Art Musik. Ich muss aber sagen, dass das Album zwar gut durchläuft, aber auch nicht richtig mitreißt, wie das sonst bei Black-/Death Metal der Fall ist. Fans dieser Musikrichtung machen aber definitiv nichts falsch.

This is a review of a split album between France's Cult Of The Horns and Goatvermin which was rleeased in 2014 as a joint effort between Satanath Records, Ira Militias Productions and Dark East Productions and we will start off the review with Cult Of The Horns a solo project that plays a raw mixture of black and death metal.
His side of the split starts out with a classical music influenced intro along with some operatic vocals and demonic voices and after the intro the music goes for more of a fast and bestial war metal direction that also introduces grim screams, deep death metal growls and blast beats onto the recording and at times morbid sounding melodies can be heard along with a brief use of spoken word parts and the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast riffs and you can also hear a slight thrash influence, the production sounds very heavy and raw while the lyrics cover war, domination, nuclear and violence themes.
In my opinion Cult Of the Horns are a very great sounding bestial black/death metal solo project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out his side of the split. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Annihilate The Masses" and "Sodiers Of Doom - The Nuclear Front".
Next up is Goatvermin a band that plays a very raw, brutal and satanic form of black/war metal.
Their side of the split starts out with a very fast, raw and brutal war metal sound that also introduces chaotic guitar leads and blast beats onto their side of the recording and the vocals are done in a bestial black/death metal direction along with a few high pitched screams and the slower sections also add in morbid sounding melodies while the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them, the production sounds very raw and heavy while the lyrics cover blasphemy, violence and Satanism themes.
In my opinion Goatvermin are a very great sounding black/war metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out their side of the split. RECOMMENDED TRACK "Atrocious Citadel".
In conclusion I feel this is a very great sounding album and if you are a fan of black and war metal, you should check out this split.

Lo split fra Cult Of The Horns e Goatvermin rappresenta un agglomerato di animalesca e brutale malvagità in salsa francese, diffuso nel 2014 in collaborazione da Satanath Records, Ira Militias Prod. e Dark East Prod.
I Cult Of The Horns sono una creatura del solo Mephisto e compongono il lato meno opprimente di questa uscita. Il loro death-black metal bestiale e dalle influenze thrash presenta una buona varietà per gli standard del genere e suoni quasi chiari. Gli assalti all'arma bianca vengono intervallati da rallentamenti più pesanti, supportati da grugniti profondi, pur mantenendo sempre strutture lineari e una certa ripetitività nella proposizione dei riff come hanno insegnato i Von. In questo senso i nemmeno tre minuti di "Annihilate The Fucking Mass" sono esemplari, mentre "Oppression" non possiede la stessa brillantezza, a causa di una durata più che doppia.
Con l'arrivo dei Goatvermin si viene travolti da un caotico e sferragliante uragano di stampo war metal, confusionario e dall'indole schizofrenica e barbara. Il muro di suono eretto è ora più massiccio ma indefinito nei suoi dettagli, tanto che la voce fatica a giungere all'orecchio, sovrastata dalla strumentazione, in particolare dalla batteria (probabilmente una drum machine, come per i compagni di avventura). Qualunque compromesso all'accessibilità è assente e il massacro è praticamente ininterrotto.
In conclusione, per farla breve, lo split fra Cult Of The Horns e Goatvermin è da consigliare esclusivamente a chi vive e si nutre di pane, Archgoat e Blasphemy; difficilmente potrà solleticare invece qualunque altro ascoltatore. Come sempre però potrete verificare con le vostre orecchie, utilizzando la pagina Bandcamp della Satanath Records.

Split releases are few nowadays. Although it might be a good way to get to know many bands in one release, I think that split albums must have some sort of connection between the bands to create something memorable, thus making a split release something more. In this case we get a Black Metal split with CULT OF THE HORNS from France what seems to be a one man band. The style is quite raw, maybe giving reverence to old Black / Death bands like SARCOFAGO, BEHERIT or BLASPHEMY yet I can also hear a thrashy style there too. The vocals range from low death growl to some more blackened evil groans. Played mostly fast, the demo level production works for what this is, but certainly not something out of the ordinary. GOATVERMIN is also from France, their style is quite different, this sound way more noisy and chaotic not far away from bands like REVENGE, CONQUEROR or BESTIAL WARLUST. If you tell me this is Grindcore / Noise, then I would also agree that it fits the style, although it sounds more evil. Again, if you like the style of the bands and find this one at good price, it will serve you to check out the bands. Otherwise I can see this one sitting in many shelves for long time.

Un nuevo split de la mano del sello Satanath, esta vez se trata de dos bandas francesas, Cult Of The Horns y Goatvermin, no haciendo falta aclarar que estilos promueven.
La primera es en realidad un proyecto unipersonal de un tal Mephisto, quien se hace cargo de todos los instrumentos y las voces. Los tres temas (el primero es una intro) despliegan una andanada de black/death metal a la vieja usanza, con un sonido claro pero alejado de las técnicas modernas en un intento de búsqueda del ansiado true. Zafan.
De Goatvermin podemos decir que la cosa sigue más o menos la misma línea, aunque aquí el componente black esta más presente, y la producción es decididamente mala. Con estas bandas uno nunca sabe si se trata de bajo presupuesto o de un resultado deliberadamente buscado. Sin dudas, habrá fans puristas del metal negro que amen la gran crudeza de este sonido, a mí no me gustó demasiado.
En síntesis, este EP compartido se centra en el metal negro en su más cruda concepción, y está más que claro que a no todos les gustara.
Anti-comercial, furiosamente independiente, crudo y verdadero, este Split es solo para aquellos que vivan el black.

И на землю спустился ад... Знакомство с этими французами - или скорее с этим, поскольку музыкант в проекте один - началось с совместного сплита с Goatvermin, ужасающего по качеству, но в целом впечатляющего и доходчиво дающего представление о сабже. Теперь же знакомство стало более сосредоточенным, все-таки с дебютным альбомом месье Мефисто перебил невероятное количество зайцев, половину которых он, наверняка, моментально принес в жертву Лукавому. Начать стоит с того, что этот человек один из немногих, кто решил разнообразить такой застывший в собственных канонах жанр, как блэк-металл. До него, конечно, были неоднократные аналогичные попытки, у того же пана Нергала, но речь сейчас не о нем, хотя заслуг его никто не умаляет. Cult Of The Horns вобрал в себя многое от дэт-металла, но не просто убойное звучание, а что-то посерьезнее и поглубже. Зверскую атмосферу, саму суть этой смертоносной музыки. Не забыв при этом, что все когда-то и в дэт-металле, и в блэк-металле начиналось с не самого брутального по нынешним меркам альбома британских рокеров Venom - аллюзиям и на них нашлось место на этом альбоме. Конечно, комбинируя блэк с дэтом, нельзя полностью уйти от сходства с теми же Behemoth, однако месье Мефисто максимально постарался это сделать. И это ему удалось, потому что местами мне казалось, что из динамиков хреначит не французский металл-проект с единственным участником, а, например, бельгийцы Aborted, зачем-то обмазавшиеся корпс-пейнтом, или же британцы Napalm Death, зачем-то сделавшие то же самое, или же австралийцы Portal, прикрывшиеся своим "скворечником". Список можно продолжать. А музыка-то осталась блэк-металлом, даже если его и не узнать. В этом деле лидер Cult Of The Horns добился самого главного - уделал всех недальновидных поклонников жанра, которых, скорее всего, просто не проймут его стараний. Как, например, не все воспринимают российскую группу Second To Sun, в рамках которой было принято сходное решение разнообразить блэк-металл всеми доступными средствами. В итоге получилось нечто не очень доступное простому обывателю, не знающему ничего дальше Burzum, Darkthrone и еще пары-тройки обязательных к запоминанию названий. И ведь поначалу слушаешь "Chapter I - Domination", и не осознаешь, как такое вообще возможно, а к середине уже понимаешь - это что-то с чем-то! Действительно мощная, убойная и по-своему талантливая и гениальная работа, способная воспламенить своими звуками немало задниц чрезмерно упертых поклонников блэк-металла. А сделал все это фактически один-единственный француз.
