I’ve observed more than once in our pages that creating purely instrumental metal in compositions of unusual length is a challenge fraught with risk. Even a song of more than 10 minutes that includes voices puts demands on the attention of discerning listeners that are difficult to reward, and when the additional sonic textures and emotional energies that can be contributed by a good vocalist are subtracted from the equation, the dangers of drifting attention are magnified.

Of course, we can all think of at least a few examples of musicians capable of surmounting such challenges, whose lengthy compositions and instrumental performances grab hold of our heads and don’t let go until they’re ready to. And I think we have a new example of such prowess for you here, in the track we’re premiering from the new album by the Russian band Ethir Anduin. The song’s name is “Meaningless Existence“.

I suppose I should have mentioned that the challenges of creating long instrumental-only tracks can become greater still when only one person is behind the sounds, because it’s difficult for one person to be good at everything that’s needed to maintain that grip. And in this case, there is indeed only one person behind the music; although he is joined by a vocalist elsewhere on the new album, he’s on his own here. It must be said that he’s had time to hone his skills: The new album, Loneliness of My Life, is the band’s seventh album since 2011.

But the style of the music has evolved over those years, moving from funeral doom to a more blackened and atmospheric form of doom with symphonic components, and from there to what we have now on this new record, which the releasing labels (Symbol Of Domination and More Hate Productions) recommend for fans of Black Sun Aeon, Yearning, Totalselfhatred, Burzum, Shape Of Despair, Forgotten Tomb, KYPCK, and Swallow The Sun.

“Meaningless Existence” is a changing experience, which if not essential is at least vital in maintaining a hold for nearly 11 minutes. The ebb and flow of the track begins with strummed chords backed by a shimmering ambience, accented with dissonant notes and pounding drums. The music builds in urgency and heaviness, evolving into the sound of tension and inner turmoil. The pounding rhythms grow more punishing and the riffing more feverish.

The track is segmented by softer digressions, almost always led by a big bass pulse. The first of those creates a near-hallucinatory feeling, but then the black-hearted, gloom-cloaked jackhammering resumes, still backed by a gleaming mysterious shimmer of sound and the ripple of a tremolo’d lead. Even with the occasional brief changes of mood, the trajectory of the music still arcs toward greater torment — the pounding becomes even more massive, the guitars even more boiling. And even the digressions change into a pairing of skittering strings and slashing chords, followed by even more destructive bursts of savage percussion and smashing riffs.

Desolation comes in different shapes, and eventually this track creates a new one as the pace becomes more dirge-like and the music more grim and groaning, more despairing and oppressive — though peals of uneasy melody and high febrile tones pave the way to one more hammering attack, with the bass falling like sledgehammer blows and the layering of guitars becoming near cacophonous in their frenzy.

A final bass-led digression introduces guitar sounds (there are so many of them in this song!) that resemble the twittering of frightened birds, and when the mountainous stomping disappears for the last time, its those frightened sounds that become the last thing you hear before Ethir Anduin releases its grip.

Пропустив через свои уши терабайты музыки всевозможных жанров, со временем становишься даже, наверное, слишком привередливым. Откровенного мусора становится всё больше, и найти среди него такие работы, которые бы смогли по-настоящему зацепить и наследить в душе, - та ещё, скажу я вам, задача. Поэтому в последнее время словила себя на том, что слушаю первые две-три песни с альбома и отправляю его в топку, если музыка на нем не вызывает ни малейших эмоций внутри (даже негативных). Зачем тратить своё время на пустоту, когда можно использовать его на поиски по-настоящему достойных работ? Таких, как новый альбом Ethir Anduin.

Ethir Anduin – это one-man проект из Тихвина, образованный в 2006 году. Начиная с выхода своего дебютного альбома «In A Chasm Of Thousand-year Despondency» в 2010 году, Алексей Веселов (создатель и идейный вдохновитель проекта) демонстрирует просто стахановскую работоспособность. Практический каждый год, начиная с дебютника, он радует поклонников своего творчества то синглом, то участием в компиляции, то сплитом с другими командами (и это при том, что Алексей является участником и других проектов). Всего же на счету Ethir Anduin восемь полноформатных альбомов, о крайнем из которых – «Loneliness of My Life» – и пойдёт речь в этом отзыве.

И давайте, наконец-то, поговорим о том, почему же данная работа стоит вашего времени (по моему скромному мнению).

Во-первых, как и работы многих других one-man проектов, звучание «Loneliness of My Life» отличается целостностью и завершенностью. В нём мысли, эмоции и переживания только одного человека. А кто, как не сам автор, лучше всего может рассказать о том, что у него внутри? Нет тех эмоциональных качелей и перепадов настроения, выраженных в попытках сочетать несочетаемое, когда группа хочет в один альбом вместить мысли всех участников и все их музыкальные предпочтения. Лишь одна четко выраженная идея и история только одного человека. Наверное, именно поэтому Алексею удалось справиться с довольно тяжелой (учитывая современные тенденции) задачей, а именно удержание внимания слушателя на протяжении достаточно длительных треков. Даже не все длинные песни других команд, где дополнительную эмоциональность и звуковые текстуры вносит вокал, могут похвастаться этим. У каждой же темы с «Loneliness of My Life» своё собственное настроение, в которое окунаешься как в бездонный омут. Они не надоедают и не сливаются по итогу в одну бесконечную звуковую дорожку.

Во-вторых, этот альбом обязательно стоит послушать, если вы, как и я, в песне больше цените музыку, чем текст. «Loneliness of My Life» фактически полностью инструментальный. Лишь в заглавном треке «Lethargy» есть небольшой отрывок с рассуждением о том, что безумие, алчность и разврат гнетут нашу душу и разъедают тело. Но даже он, где-то в своей середине, просто начинает теряться за стеной гитарного звука. Кстати, именно на гитарном звуке с поддержкой ударных и построено звучание этого альбома. И несмотря на то, что такая тенденция прослеживается на всех последних работах Ethir Anduin, нельзя сказать, что проект достиг того момента, когда начинает копировать сам себя. Если вы, как и я, начали знакомство с ним именно с «Loneliness of My Life», то обязательно послушайте его предыдущие альбомы. Ethir Anduin – это как раз тот случай, когда музыка меняется вместе с его создателем. От медленного, мрачного и эмоционально тяжелого funeral doom’а через athmospheric doom с его мелодизмом и гармонией клавишных к холодной колючести и мерцающему звучанию blackned doom’а. По каждому из этих этапов Алексей Веселов (какая ирония!) проведет своего слушателя с завидным мастерством и знанием своего дела. От себя же обещаю вам полное погружение в атмосферу альбома и настроение его создателя. Ввиду отсутствия вокала ничто не сможет отвлечь ваше внимание от самого главного и не станет ограничивать те образы в голове, которые обязательно родятся при прослушивании. Просто закройте глаза и наслаждайтесь!

Ethir Anduin are a solo project from Russia that has been featured before in this zine and plays an instrumental mixture of black, doom and post metal and this is a review of his 2018 album "Loneliness Of my Life" which was released as a joint effort between Symbol Of Domination and More Hate Productions.

Clean playing starts off the album while all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them along with the solos and leads being done in a very melodic post metal style while all of the tracks are very long and epic in length and the slow riffs are heavily rooted in doom metal.

A decent amount of melody can also be heard in the guitar riffing at times while the music also brings in a great amount of atmospheric black metal elements along with some spoken word parts being used briefly as well as some synths also bringing synths onto the recording and when the music finally speeds up a small amount of blast beats are also added onto the recording.

Ethir Anduin creates another recording that remains true to his mixture of atmospheric black, doom and post metal while keeping most of the music instrumental and the production sounds very professional.

In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Ethir Anduin and if you are a fn of instrumental, atmospheric black, doom and post metal, you should check out this album.

Come suggerisce il titolo dell’album, Ethir Anduin è un progetto solista di tal Alexey Veselov, un ragazzo russo talentuoso e con le idee ben chiare su cosa mettere nei propri lavori. E qui noi troviamo una desolazione depressogena messa in musica che non lascia scampo. Il cd comincia infatti come un album dei Nocturnal Depression un po’ più tirato e veloce, ma il mood è assolutamente quello. Poi, con il procedere delle tracce la situazione si fa decisamente più accesa e veloce rispetto al combo francese. Suoni distorti e ancestrali si mischiano con melodie oscure e malinconiche, tempi che poi rallentano e improvvisamente riprendono come il respiro di un cadavere che torna in vita dall’aldilà. Praticamente un disco strumentale, lascia le parti cantate in secondo piano e stipate in precisi brevi momenti delle tracce. All’aumentare degli ascolti, il suono tende ad insinuarvisi in testa e a non mollarvi come un tarlo affamato di materia cerebrale, una tensione oscura che inizialmente è poco percepibile ma che cresce con l’avanzare del lavoro. Un disco inaspettatamente bello, solido, suonato da dio e soprattutto diverso dal solito ambient depressive pur mutuandone tutte le caratteristiche emozionali.

ETHIR ANDUIN начинал свою творческую карьеру с исполнения музыки мрачной, безысходной, черной и гибельной - Black/Doom Metal. 13 лет уже пишет свои творения тихвинский музыкант (иногда приглашая гостевых исполнителей), а в этот раз Алекс сделал все сам. Да и стилистику поменял сей раз, хотя и получилось несомненно беспросветно, но это Atmospheric instrumental metal, сообщает нам издающий лейбл.

Проект за время своего функционирования записал семь полноформатов, информируют метал-архивы. И много материала поменьше объемами. На два из них, что были изданы определенными лейблами, я даже написал отклики: на ETHIR ANDUIN - В глубинах болота (2012) и ETHIR ANDUIN (2014) I magen av svart kaos.

Видимо, в какое-то время на Алекса навалил «потный вал вдохновения», пошел материал, и он ничтоже сумняшеся решил прописать его в сабжевом альбоме. А он на 70 минут, без малого. К тому же это инструментальный альбом и человечий голос появляется там для фиксации определенных вещей — то ли молитва, то ли катарсис кто-то переживает, то ли просто декламация.

Внимательно прослушав более половины альбома, сделал уже вывод, тот вал вдохновения был действительно не маленьким, скорее титаническим по объемам и средствам. Мне кажется, можно было альбома два на его основе записать — блэк-думовых.

И насчет темпов композер в этот раз решил, что чисто медленные вещи не прокатят, и сделал кроме мидтемпо композиций еще и побыстрее, обозначая свои способы динамичного музицирования. Хотя отмечу, что, несомненно, вслушиваясь в этот альбом видно )), что автор все так же привержен к неторопливому темпу, когда время просто замедляется округ, и вслушиваешься в эти риффы как замерзший, как в приговор. Так что, можно сказать, - намерения автора не изменились...

Да, это все такой же крепкий дум, размешанный с чем-то резвым и структурно более опасным, так что получилось на стыке. А мизантропия корневая, конечно, осталась, и эпитафия, и последнее слово...

Творец решительно покрывает аудиальное полотно то пост-роком, то наливным продолжительным инструменталом (а альбом собственно весь инструментал) , - это когда ему надо изобразить отрешенность и уныние, однако все смывается резкими движениями гитар, колющими бросками ритм-секции — короче: страх и ужас - фобос и деймос. Диапазон композера все так же широк: - от минималистского эмбиент-коллажа к неоклассическому повествованию, от дума до пост-блэка и мелодического дум-дэта.

Тут и саунд альбома, я слышу, работает на полное взаимопонимание автора и слушателя, прописано все четко, акценты расставлены в нужных местах, дабы меломан мог сосредоточиться на том или ином звучании, которое в данный момент несет главную Весть.

VERDIKT: Loneliness of My Life i beze slov promlouvá k posluchači silou melodie, atmosféry a v neposlední řadě osobitým šarmem...

Opravdu jsem s letošním balíčkem promo nahrávek od Satanath Records spokojený. Rozšířil mi obzory o interprety, o které bych asi jen tak nezakopl. Nyní bude řeč o taktéž ruských Ethir Anduin. Jedná se o sólo projekt multiinstrumentalisty Fenrira (Alexey Veselov) z deathmetalových Bestial Deform. Fenrir se ovšem ve svém projektu zaobírá naprosto odlišným spektrem hudebního vesmíru. Ethir Anduin se nese pozvolnými stezkami na pomezí post/blacku s doomem v hodně atmosférickém a zasněném duchu. Deska vyšla díky spolupráci Symbol Domination s More Hate Productions. K nám se pak dostala distributorem Satanath Records.

Vzhledem k tomu, že Ethir Anduin existuje třináct let, recenzovaná řadovka Loneliness of My Life je už několikátá v řadě a samotný Alexey se na scéně pohybuje od začátku devadesátých let, nečekal jsem nic podprůměrného. Nic, co by zavánělo ztrátou času. Což se ani neděje. Hned od prvních tónů plně instrumentálního díla je jasné, že se dějí věci. Výborný zvuk příjemně zaštiťuje zajímavě vygradované kompozice, kterým zpěv příliš nechybí. Tohle neříkám často, protože pro mě bývá zpěv na prvním místě a instrumentálky mě musí přesvědčit svojí dokonalostí, abych jim dal šanci vícekrát než jednou (hehe).

Nechtěl bych lhát, že na Loneliness of My Life neuslyšíte žádný hlas. Sem tam a tam sem nahrávkou probleskne mluvený projev. Hlavní slovo mají ovšem sólové vyhrávky, akustické hrátky, zvláštně znějící klávesy a výborná baskytara. Ta mě mrskla svým šarmem přes uši hned na poprvé. Spolu s bicími mi byli prvními průvodci deskou. Občasné zrychlení je pouze zpestřením pozvolného dění. Každá skladba má svůj svět. Svoje grand finále je ale souvisle začleněno do multivesmíru Loneliness of My Life.

Na instrumentálních nahrávkách bývá často záporem přílišné ego hlavního protagonisty, který do posluchače hrne svoje onanie hlava nehlava. Fenrir nepatří do této kategorie. Skladby jsou bohatě zaranžované, všechny nástroje mají své místo, ale často vstupují do řeči druhému. Nicméně všechno sedí a nepřebývá. Melodie nemají status patosu, na bolestínství se zde nehraje. Ač je Loneliness of My Life dlouhá víc než hodinu, ani si nevšimnete, že jste na konci.

Pokud vám tedy nevadí absence zpěvu, nevadí vám klávesy a silné melodie, či mix post metalu s doomem a blackem, respektive vyhledáváte-li právě takovou muziku, neměla by vám zatím poslední deska Ethir Anduin Loneliness of My Life uniknout. Ethir Anduin se sice nachází v hlubokém undergroundu, kde bádá pouze pár jedinců, svojí kvalitou ovšem hravě přesahuje daleko známější spolky.

ETHIR ANDUIN, término de la imaginería Tolkiana, hace también de nombre de la banda de Tikhvin (Rusia), formada en 2006 y de los que os traigo su séptimo larga duración, Loneliness Of My Life.

A pesar de que en anteriores encarnaciones de la banda podemos encontrar a más músicos colaborando, aquí es Alexey Veselov quien se encarga de toda la instrumentación mas algún apunte vocal leve de Luka Hysterical. Coedición de MORE HATE PRODUCTIONS junto con SYMBOL OF DOMINATION, y diseño de Paint-It-Black Design como suele ser habitual en muchas de estas ediciones.

Se trata de una banda que ha ido mutando su sonido desde el Funeral Doom hasta un Black con elementos doom y retazos Post rockeros ambientales. Al igual que muchas bandas rusas, son muy desconocidos por aquí y para tratarse de un álbum compuesto y tocado por un solo músico el resultado es loable sonando bastante compacto merced a un sonido de batería orgánico, cosa que no suele ocurrir con las bandas que me llegan de estas tierras.

Especialmente sugerentes son los arreglos sinfónicos de teclados, que en temas como el cierre de "Meaningless Existence" adquieren un protagonismo especial tiñendo de épica y majestuosidad al estilo de cómo se hacía en el género hace ya bastantes años. Sin embargo, no me entendáis mal... no sé en trabajos anteriores porque no los he escuchado, pero ETHIR ANDUIN tienen un toque atmosférico post metalero sutil que los separa de otros proyectos y que a su vez (no me preguntéis como) recuerda a discos de Pagan.

Esa brutal apertura del doble bombo en "Lethargy" funciona bien, aunque es cierto que personalmente la adición de un cantante no le sentaría mal ya que se trata de temas muy trabajados (con aroma a RAPTURE por cierto). Como proyecto instrumental se sostiene pero un paso adelante podría darse, y prueba de ello es lo bien que quedan las voces en segundo plano (creo que en ruso) y dándole un toque a eso que llaman Post Doom aunque Blackened Doom sería la etiqueta a elegir si me pusiérais un cútter en la yugular.

La base rítmica es poderosa gracias a un bajo que sin ser especial, resalta en la producción como un taladro desbocado. Pero lo verdaderamente sorprendente es que el disco dura casi 70 minutos y no decae (bueno, quizás se podrían haber quitado algunos tramos); una versatilidad bastante marcada en los cambios de ritmo y unos gélidos riffs de guitarra a medio tiempo que lo mismo pueden casar en un disco de SWALLOW THE SUN o SHAPE OF DESPAIR que en los FORGOTTEN TOMB. Inventiva a raudales y temas muy diferenciados; producción profesional y los teclados...

... Y los teclados. Esos eternos teclados atmosféricos fríos como el Permafrost.

Ethir Anduin are a productive formation, formed in 2006 in Leningrad by Alexey ‘Fenrir’ Veselov (currently also in Bestial Deform, by the way). Throughout this decade, Ethir Anduin (being a solo-outfit) recorded and released quite some stuff, including a hand full of full-length studio albums (many of them being self-released) (amongst them: I Magen Av Svart Kaos – link below)

More Hate Productions and Symbol Of Domination Productions did work together many times before, and they decided to collaborate once more in order to release this newest Ethir Anduin album, which is called Loneliness Of My Life. The result is an eight-tracker that lasts for seventy minutes (about eight to eleven minutes per song). The compact disc, printed in 500 copies, comes with a four-page booklet, and seen that this project is an instrumental one, there are, evidently, no lyrics included. The cover artwork has something tolkienish, yet seen the moniker of the project (named after the delta of the river Anduin in the southern regions of Gondor in Middle-Earth), that is not a surprise.

Loneliness Of My Life is, well, how to put it. I have to admit that I have never been that thrilled by any of the last Ethir Anduin releases – though I did certainly not dislike them ethir, eh, I mean either. I was always missing something, waiting for something to come – something that eventually did not come at all (or not completely). Something that the more funereal first releases did have, yet which did disappear, unfortunately. Well, with this album, and after several listens, I finally found what I was looking for once again since a couple of years. And damn yes, that’s great to experience.

In some way, Ethir Anduin can convince me the whole of the time. Is there something different in comparison to the (recent) past? Well, yes and no.

No, for Loneliness Of My Life still brings a very melodious and timeless form of (Black) Metal. The basic ingredients are the same. All compositions are of the so-called ‘Atmospheric’ kind, with firm and little heavy structures, a lot of floating melodies (great leads, dual / duelling riffing, and a handful of convincing solos), mesmerizing synth lines, and pounding rhythms. The tempo is quite slow, flirting with the most epic expression of Doom, interspersed with several harsher excerpts.

Yes, because of several reasons. And I know that what follows isn’t but a personal, and therefor subjective element, but, how to put it, I de feel it this time. The compositions are much more well-thought, much more professional in both song writing and execution. There is a lot more to experience, with an increased adultery in performance. I’ll give Life Is Punishment as an example, with so many details to unravel. The better part of this song is based on pretty intense yet ambient structures. But you have that sudden quasi-blasting outburst, the subtle injection of acoustics, and the dark, gloomy spheres veiled around the pushing core. The ability to search for, and find, a great balance in between semi-acoustic moments and pounding passages, in between integer moments and combative ones, and in between slower and funereal fragments and technical elegance, has not been that pronounced for years.

This example is a fragment of almost each single piece on this album. All tracks do have that convincing, even intriguing character, with many things to explore, many elements to dissect. The huge variation is mostly coherent this time, organically cohesive and never pathetically exaggerated. …which is another example of the positive evolution. Besides, the sound quality is simply great. The whole sounds powerful and overwhelming, yet not fake surgically clean (still maintaining that rough-edged rawness). Within the mix, every single detail, every single instrument involved plays its own, mostly important, role. Once again I have to mention ‘organic’. I think it’s wonderful to hear the bass lines supporting the melodies so intensely. I think it’s great to feel that the keyboards at the background are more than simply supportive, yet being part of the totality to create this semi-spiritual sphere. And it is oh so fine to notice that the whole package acts like one fabulous naturally-sounding sonic journey.

Anyway, I can conclude easily with: Loneliness Of My Life for sure might be the best Ethir Anduin recording to date. It’s a thrilling experience with a lot to discover. Once again, it isn’t but my personal opinion, but this might be the start of a new future. I hope Fenrir, the guy behind this solo-outfit, will continue this way, for I do already look forward listening to the new album (whenever it is foreseen).

With a title like that don’t go expecting this to be filled with uplifting songs about how nice the grass is and how lovely life can be. This has all the makings of a really good melancholic doom album. Add to it a bit blackening and you get an even darker doom album. I am not even missing the vocals on this one. That is how much I do enjoy it. A really nice album.

Acreditam que apesar de ter ouvido este álbum em altíssima rotação, foram necessárias bastantes audições para ter a certeza se o trabalho é instrumental ou não? Isso poderá querer dizer muita coisa. Os mais pessimistas poderão pensar que é um trabalho que não tem qualquer impacto no ouvinte, que nem é memorável o suficiente para sabermos se tem voz ou não. Na realidade é precisamente o oposto disso. Este álbum, o sétimo da banda russa, é tão intenso que nos deixa praticamente noutro estado de consciência. E não se pense que é algo ambient ou coisa que o valha. Não, temos um doom cheio de peso e dinâmicas, com temas enormes mas que conseguem ser bem sucedidos em capturar a atenção do ouvinte. E fazem-no de forma fenomenal. Que é o que é este álbum, simplesmente fenomenal. Ah e também é instrumental.

Ethir Anduin was created by Alexey Veselov in 2006. He is responsible for all the music & instrumentations in "Loneliness of My Life". It is his seventh full-length release to date. The album builds up from eight lengthy tracks and will keep you busy for 69 minutes. On the one hand, you will be able to sink into various soundscapes of the melancholic still life, while on the other hand, to enter the state of deep relaxation as well. The ambience over there is from the sort of very special and breathtaking. You can easily listen to this CD in a cyclic mode, to use it as a constant musical background, whilst you're busy with other things, like reading or studying, for example, and I can assure you that you won't get harassed, tired or bored from the songs of Ethir Anduin at all. As the repertory is severely instrumental-like, I would like to attach you the song titles herewith: "Lethargy", "Life is Punishment", "Anchor", "Unhealed Wounds", "Cold Embrace of Death", "In the Abyss of Unconsciousness", "7:06 AM" and "Meaningless Existence". I am sure, it will help you to get a better understanding of the whole material both musically and ideologically. As for me it is a flawless doom metal release!!!

Так называемая незамутненность авторского видения, которой определенная часть любителей тяжелой музыки обосновывает свою симпатию к one-man-проектам, в последнее время все чаще вызывает у меня скепсис. Релизы этого формата, особенно делающие ставку на атмосферность, слишком часто кажутся мне недоработанными, хотя содержащиеся в них зерна идей, попав в руки студийных звукоинженеров или хотя бы толковых певцов и инструменталистов, могли бы в большинстве случаев дать куда более интересные всходы. Однако Ethir Anduin удалось меня приятно удивить. По какой-то злой иронии за этим проектом стоит человек по имени Алексей Веселов, хотя уже из названия альбома ясно, что ни о каком веселье здесь речи идти не может. И действительно, “Loneliness Of My Life” представляет собой 70 минут дум-блэка, причем полностью инструментального, если не считать сэмпл с чтением стихотворения Бодлера (да-да, хрестоматийное «Вступление») в первом треке. Я за последнее время написал несколько рецензий на работы аналогичного плана, и ни одна из них не вызвала у меня особого энтузиазма. Чем же отличается от остальных Ethir Anduin? Как минимум, высоким техническим уровнем своего создателя. Алексей – опытный музыкант из Ленинградской области, параллельно участвующий, в частности, в Bestial Deform, а “Loneliness Of My Life” – уже седьмой полноформатник проекта, поэтому чувствуется, что сыгран материал профессионально и записан куда приятнее для моего уха, чем творения ультра-андерграундных «ноунеймов». Даже барабаны, обычно несущие в атмосферном блэке и блэк-думе не более чем функцию отбивания ритма, здесь сыграны (или запрограммированы, затрудняюсь определить) достаточно интересно. Хороши и гитарные партии, причем это не характерная для «атмо»-музыки мешанина неразборчивых аккордов (аккорды, впрочем, тоже есть), а четкие и драйвые риффы и своеобразные мелодии. Более того, в композициях наблюдаются динамика и развитие, и развитие это далеко не всегда предсказуемое, так что даже с учетом того, что треки идут от 7 до 11 минут, они не наскучивают как минимум при первых нескольких прослушиваниях. Наконец, Ethir Andiun лишен еще одной характерной для one-man-проектов напасти – герметичности, переходящей в самоповторы, т.е. когда из альбома в альбом наследуются одни и те же музыкальные приемы и атмосфера. Алексей же за семь альбомов прошел путь от фьюнерал-дума до блэк-дума, а уже после “Loneliness Of My Life” сделал еще один смелый шаг – впервые за всю историю проекта включил в состав вокалистку. Так что Ethir Anduin внезапно оказался еще одним представителем отечественной андерграундной метал-сцены, за которым стоит пристально следить. Жаль, что я не делал этого раньше.

... Y los teclados. Esos eternos teclados atmosféricos fríos como el Permafrost.

ETHIR ANDUIN, du nom du delta par lequel se jette dans l'océan le long fleuve Anduin, en Terre du Milieu et dans la géographie mythique de JRR Tolkien, est un projet de Metal sombre formé en 2006.

Originaire de Tikhvine, ville russe de l'oblast de Leningrad, située à 180km à l'est de Saint-Petersbourg, le one-man band - devenu récemment un duo - n'en est pas à son premier coup d'essai, puisque son CV discographique comprenait déjà un premier album CD-R, un second album numérique, un troisième album CD physique et un split album numérique (avec Путь [Path]), sortis de 2011 à 2016. Ce n'est toutefois qu'avec ce Loneliness Of My Life, deuxième disque physique et professionnellement manufacturé, qu'il émerge véritablement en commençant à se faire connaître au-delà des frontières de la Russie.

A l'anecdotique exception d'un bref passage (samplé ?) de spoken words en russe vers la fin de la piste d'ouverture Lethargy, ce qui singularise le plus cet album, c'est qu'il se constitue de huit plages entièrement instrumentales d'un Black/Doom (ou Doom "blackisé") atmosphérique et d'excellente facture, où la puissance du son, les ambiances épiques et le côté grandiose le disputent à une technicité bien carrée, marque de fabrique certaine d'un musicien talentueux.

En clair, il serait difficile de concevoir Doom plus "blackisé" ou Black plus "doomy" -au choix- , même si l'on a même droit ici et là à quelques incursions dans le monde du Metal progressif, notamment sur le morceau In The Abyss Of Unconsciousness, qui en cela se démarque sans doute un peu des sept autres, d'autant plus qu'il recèle aussi quelques réminiscences de Heavy/proto-Doom "classique" (BLACK SABBATH et consorts, pour ne pas les citer). Insistons toutefois sur le fait que celles-ci s'intègrent parfaitement à l'ensemble, et contribuent ainsi à lui conférer une identité réelle, une âme et une personnalité qui lui sont propres. Et c'est justement ce qui le fait sortir du lot.

Emotionnellement chargée, alternant entre atmosphères mystiques, envoûtantes nappes de clavier, majestueuses mélodies, riffs de guitare dévastateurs sur fond de rythmiques mid-tempo, et martèlements de double pédale qui lui confèrent indéniablement une touche de Black Metal assez prononcée, la magie d'ETHIR ANDUIN opère ici de manière particulièrement efficace. On se laisse très volontiers entraîner dans cet univers sonore irréel, qui parvient avec brio à vous faire "voyager" cérébralement. Que demander de plus ?

Mention spéciale à Meaningless Existence, superbe composition qui referme l'opus sur ce qu'il me semble pouvoir considérer comme son apothéose...

Symbol Of Domination, filiale biélorusse du label russe Satanath Records, nous a habitués depuis déjà un moment à des productions de qualité. Et ce n'est certainement pas celle-ci qui viendra infléchir la tendance.

Bref, voici donc un disque qui ne "parlera" peut-être pas à ceux qui ont absolument besoin de vocaux pour ne pas s'ennuyer. En revanche, si vous êtes de ceux qui apprécient les instrumentaux -et personnellement j'en suis- , alors n'hésitez pas plus longtemps : il gagne vraiment à être connu, et mérite assurément une place d'honneur au sein de votre collection.

O Blackened Doom Metal executado pelo projeto russo liderado por Alexey Veselov e intitulado Ethir Anduin é um dos melhores de seu cenário, tendo seu início em 2006 e sendo um ótimo atrativo para você amante de temas obscuros e momentos de técnica e feeling.

"Loneliness of My Life" chegou em 2018 e conseguiu se consolidar rapidamente, mantendo algumas características que vinham sendo criadas, além de evolução sonora em muitos quesitos.

Os climas melancólicos dão um ar muito interessante e ao meu ver, se encaixam perfeitamente na proposta.

Já em sua produção, tudo está intacto se compararmos com o mais recente álbum ("Pathway to Eternity : The Agony" de 2020), aliando suas bases densas aos riffs inspirados, além de cadência muito consistente.

No geral, os mais habituados aos climas que a vertente proporciona certamente irão gostar!

Ethir Anduin provide well produced Atmospheric Black/Doom that ultimately ends up feeling directionless.

Ethir Anduin are a Russian Doom band that have been producing music for about a decade now. They tend to switch between nature-based and depressing lyrics/song titles, and given the high number of Russian bands that tend to have releases containing depressing/self-pitying sont titles, it’s safe to say that I preferred Ethir Anduin when they were more focused on the countryside than their countless sighs. That said, there’s very little that is actually depressing about what is frankly a somewhat up-tempo album, at least by Doom standards.

The first thing that struck me about Ethir Anduin’s seventh full-length album was how smooth it was. The production sounds absolutely impeccable; kudos to them for that. It’s difficult to pull off a good Doom release with such impressive production though. Everything needs to be meticulously done as there’s nowhere to hide, whereas on a release with less impressive production there’s lots of scope for evasion and distractions.

Despite their excellent production - and it really does sound like a release from a band that have been at the top of the tree for a long time now - I’m not convinced that they have done enough with their actual compositions to make music to match. For starters - and this is coming from a man that really enjoys intros/outros/Ambient music - I think that the tracks take far too long to begin. It’s not even a build-up; I can live with that, and even enjoy it sometimes. It’s basically deliberation of some nature, which doesn’t serve any purpose that I can detect. When I listen to other instrumental Doom bands (e.g. Men In Search Of The Perfect Weapon) I get an idea of where the music is supposed to be going, or where it’s supposed to be leading the listener, but I seldom had that feeling place on 'Loneliness Of My Life'.

When the tracks do kick in, they just sound rather empty to me, which is really challenging to describe because they’re mostly rather fast and involved tracks. I understand that the flavour of the album is supposed to be loneliness but I really don’t feel like they’ve conveyed the sadness of such feeling places anywhere near well enough. At times, I feel like their music is too up-tempo for such a message to be conveyed accurately. At other times, their music is crying out for some kind of atmospheric instrument to take over but there isn’t one. A cello, flute, violin, piano - any of them would have been a fine addition here. However, Ethir Anduin boldly plough onward, attempting to create an emotional atmosphere without anything to garner emotion. A curious take!

The only instrument that Ethir Anduin uses to generate some kind of atmosphere is keys, and although they do add a bit of drama from time to time, it understandably doesn’t go anywhere. I also don’t think it’s helped out on the vocals front because they’re few and far between, and when they are present, they’re not particularly good. Most tracks have a sprinkling of spoken Russian, and that’s it, which is standard enough for an instrumental release but it doesn’t help them achieve their goal here.

I understand why the band doesn’t have a flair for emotional instruments, given their ties to Black Metal. I mean, this is purported to be a Black/Doom album, for clarity. You will find bursts of Emperor-esque Black Metal here, which suits me just fine. However, Black Metal and Doom Metal are very similar in terms of what’s required to make them work so playing Black Metal in such a clean production can be very detrimental without the right composition and the right vocals. Therefore, I find it hard to be seduced by the Black Metal aspects of this Black/Doom release despite some terrific guitarwork and solid drumming.

Additionally, I’m not even sure I can even get away with describing this release as “Black/Doom” because there needs to be more vocal input for that to be the case in my little world. The reality of 'Loneliness Of My Life' is that it’s predominantly instrumental music in a Black/Doom fashion with the odd Ambient section. Although I think the production is top-drawer, as are the technically gifted musicians, I just can’t buy into 'Loneliness Of My Life' because there’s nothing to make it stand out in terms of musical quality. A band like this cannot be far away from releasing a seriously good album but whilst it’s as empty and seemingly directionless as this one is, it’s hard for me to be particularly praising of the Russian band. If more of their tracks were like, 'In The Abyss Of Unconsciousness' then I’d probably be more of a fan but that still wouldn’t change my overall opinion, which is that this album needs vocals to work.

To summarise, 'Loneliness Of My Life' is a masterful production of songs that don’t go anywhere, comparable to the urge for a pizza whilst drunk. The first slice is just perfect, but then you don’t want any more and end up falling asleep, wondering why you got the pizza in the first place. This music may not have put me into a narcosis, but it has left me questioning what the initial point was. I also wish I had a pizza now.

Anyway - there’s hope for this band as few in this sub-genre can claim to have such impeccable production. Whether they get there or not is another matter. For now, this music doesn’t do much for me but a few minor adjustments would be likely to significantly change my opinion.

Ethir Anduin is a Russian solo act (up until recently, that is) that specializes in a mixture of Black and Doom Metal as his chosen genre. He does this, and has done so in various EP’s, Demos and Full-length releases since 2006, by combining the constant, efficient and powerfully evocative riffs of Black Metal as the foundation for a monotonous and simplistic approach to his music – Adding up to something inbetween, as one would undoubtedly expect.

Overall the music is down-trodden, low-key and borderline instrumental throughout all eight tracks (which, by the way, adds up to nearly one hour and ten minutes of playtime) with only the occasional statements thrown in – Which works quite well for Ethir Anduin. Granted, I have never really been all that interested in all-instrumental albums (even though I have a penchant for the occassional track), which is one of several reasons why I was surprised that Loneliness of My Life intrigued me as much as it did.

All in all, it has the feel and approach of a soundtrack for a particularly engaging movie, starting in medias res and just keeping up appearances, conserving energy and straggling along, all the way through to the end – To great effect. Granted, this is perhaps not a band that I would expect to see playing live as presented here, but considering that Ethir Anduin recentely added a vocalist to their roster (as a matter of fact, Loneliness of My Life is the last record released as a solo act), I can easily see them growing into quite the live experience as well as a powerful digital presence.
