Prediction: it won’t take very long after hitting play on the YouTube embed of “Subsistence Will” below for our loyal Vault Hunters to come to the conclusion that Pannychida are really good at the whole 90s death metal thing. Well…there’s a reason for that – the Russian outfit actually formed back in 1992 and released a pair of full-lengths before the turn of the millennium. However, things have been awfully quiet on the Pannychida front since the release of their third album New World’s End in 2006. After toiling for three years in the studio, the Tatarstan-based quintet, who take their name from an all-night memorial service in the Eastern Orthodox church, are finally back with Missense Mutation, which drops on Halloween. Twelve years is a long time to wait between albums, but if you’re into being bludgeoned by your death metal, it was definitely worth it.
“Subsistence Will,”which we’re premiering here today at the Vault, perfectly encapsulates what makes Pannychida’s approach to the genre so satisfying. While the song may start off sounding like a bit of standard-issue Pestilence worship, guitarists Konstantin Chetverikov and Elena Trishina are capable of deftly throwing little surprise into their riffs–a harmonic here, a bit of stop-start there–to keep listeners on their toes. Bassist Stanislav Korchagin gets his moments to shine as well, with a couple of drop-out sections that showcase his jazzy lines.

After three years of toil, the Russian death metal band Pannychida have completed their new album, Missense Mutation, and it’s now set for release on October 31st by Satanath Records and More Hate Productions. And guess what? We have a song premiere for you, a track off the new album named “Harmonious Mechanism“.
It would be fair to characterize the music as old school death metal, but of what kind? The releasing labels recommend the music for fans of Death, Pestilence, and Suffocation, and that provides some guidance. As for this song, let’s just say that if you’re feeling sleepy when you begin to listen, you won’t feel that way after you finish. Despite a sudden onset of sore-neck syndrome, you might instead feel like careening off the walls in a burst of savage merriment (or at least nodding your head and smiling in evil satisfaction).
Pannychida don’t profess to have broken any molds in the crafting of their own creations, but they throw themselves into the effort with such riotous energy and such technically impressive execution that the energy they create is highly communicable.
Fast and ferocious, “Harmonious Mechanism” is full-throttle thrashing death with near-constant changes in riffing and rhythmic battering. The song combines hyper-speed tremolo swarming and frenetic jabbing and jolting riffs over an array of pulse-like bass lines. It sounds like a poisonous, seething boil one moment and the operation of a fully charged nail-gun the next, accented by blaring chords and ultimately ramping up to an impressive display of destructive chaos (preceded by the only slower segment within this attack, which makes room for the sound of creepy, mewling bass notes).
Meanwhile, the drummer pummels and gallops and the vocalist vents monstrous, intimidating roars — and everything combines in a way that gets the blood racing and the muscles twitching.

The Russian scene, however underrepresented internationally, is currently rising, as Pannychida who are coming back.
The Russian scene, however underrepresented internationally, is currently rising, as Pannychida who are coming back. Created in 1992, the band suffered line-up changes through their four full-length and celebrates this year their twenty-seven years of career with on board Dmitry Trishin (drums), Elena Trishina (guitar), Stanislav Korchagin (bass), Konstantin Chetverikov (guitar, originally vocals) and finally Denis Semenov (vocals). After long years of silence, Missense Mutation is released at the end of 2018 to reconnect with the Russians’ Death Metal dyed with Gothic influences. Be ready or suffer.
The track Missense Mutation begins this album with an Old School as hell riff that geniously highlights Gothic influences. After this melancholic introduction, rhythmic suddenly knock us down, under blast beat and the Russians’ fastness. Denis’ vocals perfectly fit to the sound, with his really low tessitura that allows the musicians to unleash themselves on the background. Bass is clearly brought to the fore, with this lead part that crops up while guitars become quieter. Mental Thromb is more impacting, with riffs that focus on technicity and fastness with a sharp mix, guitars answer to themselves during a harmonic duel before teaming up for an impressive groovy part, while Harmonious Mechanism comes back on this Old School side. Blast beat, pure and simple speed combined to a very efficient rhythmic. The only moment’s relief is the bass solo, before returning on powerful riffs.
We leave again for Groove/Brutal Death with Subsistence Will for a really greasy sound, really jerky and more importantly which makes us want to headbang since the firsts seconds. Very catchy but also very violent, the composition doesn’t hesitate to hasten before coming back to a softer rhythm, but still with this characteristic heaviness. While we think the track ends, it resumes a bit before leaving for Trapped, a resolutely more airy song, and not only during the introduction. But after the first half, another spurt stops this quiet atmosphere and will definitely strengthen the band’s sound. However, harmonics are still here, just like heaviness is part of Fear Generates Tolerance, a track that won’t let us question about the word violence’s meaning.
Dissonant sounds resurfaces on Blinds Lead Blinds, and even when riffs get stronger, those sounds still slip in harmonics that the guitar players skillfully play. Bass regains an important role for Absurd Attack, directly introducing the song and building upon the rhythmic with a slamming sound. Once again, the band plays the Old School card by offering an efficient song but that also relies upon Groove parts to be pleasant. A psychedelic tones guitar solo allows the band to link this long track’s different part, before ending on another solo and leave for False Victim. This last song, well focused on a heavy and dancing rhythmic, is also full of edged harmonics, and enable the band to close the record in beauty.
It’s a winning return for Pannychida with a Missense Mutation that was kindly desired but which meets our expectations. Focusing on an unhealthy, heavy and uncompromised Death Metal, the band adds its personal touch to a yet violent style. We can wish the russians a bit more of international recognition, but also to pursue in this way they succeed in.

When looking for some great new metal albums More Hate Productions is always a good place to start with. One of their newest outputs has been delivered by Russian death metal warriors Pannychida. For whatever reason there has been a break of twelve years between their last album and “Missense Mutation”.
Pannychida walk the path between the classic structures of old school death metal and a more modern and technical approach with ease and self-confidence. The main riffs should make fans of Morbid Angel etc. feel right at home. There are flashes of technical prowess that build up a slightly chaotic atmosphere in some sections before the thundering death metal machine is marching in straight line again. Pannychida are great songwriters and use these elements to give the listener sometimes a feeling of relief when the already known rhythm takes over again. When I say “chaotic atmosphere” this does not mean that they ever lose the focus of the actual song but implement this kind of twists very cleverly.
The drumming is especially impressive as I can imagine that it is not always easy to follow all those rhythm and tempo changes with such ease. The combination of blast-beats and more laid-back and groovy pieces is what makes “Missense Mutation” such a fresh and interesting listen. The main chords and the pummeling drum attacks are accompanied by some fantastic lead hooks that often have a quite harmonic feeling and other times do sound a bit strange and slightly quirky.
As instrumentation played on such a high level asks for a powerful vocalist I am glad to report that Denis is exactly that. His roaring and growling is very intense and his delivery is on point. While some could argue that his deep tone might come across as a bit monotonous I personally think this is exactly what is needed here. His pronunciation is great making all the lyrics easily understandable.
The production is thick and heavy giving the songs an immense punch. The drums have this brutal tone that makes the whole music feel like a bulldozer at full speed. The rumbling bass is audible and is used to great effect as solo instrument in some sections. Including a stunning cover artwork “Missense Mutation” is another highlight and easily one of the best records of the genre released over the past few months.

What we have here is a seasoned Death Metal band which formed way back in 1992 in Russia. These guys know whats up and have a good sense of what good Death Metal should sound like. From break neck blasting speeds to slow groovy riffs all executed perfectly. What I love most about the production here is the bass which shines through in important parts and doesn’t overstay its welcome in parts where it is not necessary to be so audible.
From beginning to end you are served very well thought out riffs and arrangements. I love when bands throw in little bass guitar runs and this fits this album so well. The vocalist fits this band like a glove. A perfect marriage of great vocals and brutal, and sometimes quite technical music. You can hear the band has been around for so long. Newer bands struggle to find their place and need nurturing before finding their sound. These guys have perfected their sound and its magnificent.
Russia isn’t really known for producing many great bands, but Pannychida will make a new effort for me to delve deeper into the Russian scene. The album starts off with the title track and you can hear the bands presentation of what is to come in just the first few moments. Track number 5 titled “Trapped” starts off with a short acoustic riff and then breaks into one of the best tracks I have heard in quite some time.
This is a great album and I am very happy it landed on my desk. I am a very picky guy when it comes to Death Metal and this album excites me. I will definitely be diving into their discography right now.

I love all sorts of metal equally but depending on the mood I am in I crave different things. But something I never say no to is a good death metal album. No matter what mood I am in a death metal album always comes in handy. Russian PANNYCHIA play a sort of death metal that has a lot of tempo changes. Not really my number one style but they do it so good that I cannot stop listening. So if you like your death metal with break beats you are advised to check this one out. Technical death metal I guess they call this.

Never heard of this Russian death metal band before, but the biography says it was formed in 1992. Since its formation only Dmitry Trishin (drums) left. Besides him you can welcome the next musicians: Denis Semenov (vocals), Constantin Chetverikov (guitar), Elena Trishina (guitar), Stanislav Korchagin (bass & all guitar solos). "Missense Mutation" is the fourth full-length album in the band's discography, which consists of 9 typical death metal songs with all the lately used clichйs. I really found nothing special in their music, except the ripping sound production. Unfortunately, it is the kind of release that won't have a second listening session. Don't get me wrong, the musicians are handling their instruments perfectly with a certain technical level and their songs really sound massive and professional, but the entire lack of interesting hooks, informative melodies, charismatic vocal parts makes a grey picture about the band itself. Super boring and monotonous these words appeared in my mind during the almost 42 and a half minutes long stuff. Let's hope there will be some positive changes both music- and idea-wise on their forthcoming fifth album!!!

Latest death metal pearl released by Satanath Records is Missense Mutation. It’s a 9-tracker sonic assault from a veteran Russian death metal band Pannychida. Formed back in 1992 (the band suffered a few line-up changes) these guys know to write and execute perfect death metal songs.
From the opening and self-titled “Missense Mutation” (listen below) to the closing riff on “False Victim” it’s all served with well thought riffs, perfect arrangement and most importantly a neck-breaking, heavy and thick production, esp. the bass which shines through in important parts. Even the vocalist fits the overall style of playing and image of this band. His vocals are understandable and a great mix of brutal, growling, yet sometimes technical and quiet.
Same goes for whole band, creating the sound that is a magnificent mix of the classic old-school death metal structures with a more modern and technical approach. Take drumming too; I find it pretty impressive with a combination of blast-beats and more slow and groovier parts.
Thus, “Missense Mutation” gives just an idea for what is to some on the following tracks. ”Harmonious Mechanism” is pretty much old-school death metal anthem with numerous blast beats, relentless speed combined to a very efficient rhythmic. Track titled “Trapped” starts off with a short acoustic riff and then breaks into one of the best tracks on the record. The aforementioned bass plays an important role for “Absurd Attack”, introducing the song and building upon the rhythmic with a slamming sound.
The atmosphere on Missense Mutation is quite chaotic to times, but again fits perfectly to the overall style of this band. Finally, take a look at this stunning cover artwork… definitely another highlight of this release!
This is a great album and I am very happy I decided to write a review of it. Pannychida definitely needs more international recognition for the fantastic brutal sound they’re creating and I’m glad I hereby could give them time and attention they deserve!
