Utburd is the alter ego of Vitaly “Tuor” Goryunov from the city of Olenegorsk in the Murmansk region of Russia. For his second album under the Utburd name (and the third release overall), Tuor has turned his imagination to visions of Lovecraftian horror and employed the techniques of atmospheric black metal to spur the imaginations of listeners. Featuring appropriately frightful cover art and booklet design by Paint-It-Black, the new hour-long album is named The Horrors Untold, and it will be released on the 15th of April by Satanath Records.

One song from the new album (“Death From Mount Tempest”) has been previously revealed, and today we present a second one, with a name similar to that of the album itself: “The Horror Untold“.

For 11 1/2 minutes, Utburd conjures nightmarish visions through changing soundscapes of monstrous roars; livid shrieks; solemn intonations; cold, heartless riffs and fiery, head-moving ones; eerie swirling and echoing melodic accents; and plundering bass-and-drum rhythms. The music stalks and stomps, groans and drags, shimmers like cold mist under the moonlight, and explodes in ravaging assaults.

The song evokes oppressive feelings of dread and unavoidable doom, as well as frightening madness and otherworldly violence. Heavy, mystical, and ripping — it’s all of those things, and a fitting reflection of its dire inspirations.

Наверное не многим известно, но на просторах нашей необъятной родины можно найти множество интересных групп. Правда большинство из них редко доходят до широкого круга слушателей, сохраняя при этом преданность к собственному жанру. О том что есть модные и вечные стилистические веяния я говорить не буду, но обращу внимание читателя на то, что есть жанры, которые существуют вне времени… и это в первую очередь относится не к классическим жанрам типа хард-рока или хэви, а к тем, которые чаще всего можно встретить в андеграунде стилистической градации рок-музыки.

Почему я называю андеграундные жанры музыкой вне времени? В первую очередь потому-что как правило современный слушатель еще не готов к такой музыке, но придет время и она найдет отклик в сердцах миллионов.

Black-metal, наверное является ярким примером такой музыки. Безусловно есть примеры команд, которые добились внушительного коммерческого успеха в этом направлении, но их можно пересчитать по пальцам одной руки , и это в лучшем случае. Со стороны может показаться. что комьюнити ‘этого мрачнейшего жанра закрыто для рядового слушателя, при этом у блэка есть неповторимая музыкальная магия, которую сложно не заметить.

И, после такого долгого вступления, я все же хотел бы представить главного героя статьи, а именно проект UTBURD, играющий в симфоническом под-жанре блэк-металла. UTBURD - это классический пример one-man проекта, идейным и творческим вдохновителем которого является Виталий Tuor Горюнов из города Оленегорск (Мурманская область). 15 апреля был выпущен альбом The Horrors Untold, который стал третьей студийной работой UTBURD.

Лично для себя я отметил три композиции с альбома The Horrors Untold.

Rise of Dagon

Песня начинается с меланхоличного думоватого вступления состоящего из акустического гитарного перебора и клавишных, которое постепенно обрастает барабанами и перегруженной гитарой. В момент, когда вступительная часть овладеет тобой и ты с головой окунешься в музыку, все внезапно изменится и сменит обороты и напряжение. Волна мелодизма разобьется о металлическую стену, состоящую из бластбитов, гитарного крошилова и расщепленного вокала. Песня восхваляет восхождение Дагона - одного из меньших божеств пантеона мифов Ктулху. Огромных размеров гуманоид с чертами рыбы и амфибии.

The Mystery Of Joseph Karven

И снова отсылка к мифам Ктулху. На этот раз речь идет о Джозефе Карвене, вымышленном персонаже, которого придумал Говард Лавкрафт. Джозеф Карвен появляется в повести Случай Чарльза Декстера Варда (1927), где он описывается как чёрный маг, алхимик, оккультист и некромант.

Pikman's Triumph

Снова возвращаемся к творчеству Лавкрафта. На это раз речь идет о Ричарде Пикмане, которому посвящена целый рассказ Натура Пикмана. Также он отметился эпизодическим появлением в повести В Поисках Неведомого Кадата. Помимо вышеперечисленного с Пикманом наверняка окажутся знакомы геймеры, а частности те, кто играл в Fallout 4.

Согласно «Натуре Пикмана», Ричард Пикман был художником из Бостона, чьи картины вызывали весьма неоднозначную реакцию, поскольку на них изображались совершенно невообразимые, ужасные и отвратительные существа. Как выяснилось впоследствии, Пикман каким-то образом умел вызывать их и писал с натуры. В конце рассказа Пикман исчез — «возвратился в мифическую мглу, где так любил блуждать»; возможно, он даже «был не вполне человеком»

В мелодической линии композиции улавливается мотив саундтрека к фильму Путевой Обходчик. Мрачный и даже местами вызывающий чувство страха трек.

Альбом The Horrors Untold, состоит из восьми песен (включая инструментальный бонус), каждая из которых имеет свою индивидуальность. А если собрать все эти крупицы воедино, то получится шедевральный блэк-металлический бестселлер, завораживающий своей энергетикой. Пластинку нельзя назвать мясной, то она не лишена той самой тяжести и торжества антирелигиозности присущих блэк-металлу. Если взять во внимание, что в России и так мало музыкантов, исполняющих музыку в данном жанре, то The Horrors Untold, достоин внимания любителей данного направления. Общая оценки 10 из 10 так как UTBURD этого заслуживает.

Utburd is a one man Russian black metal band and this is his second album.

Combining elements of both atmospheric and depressive black metal alongside a second wave base, this release explores the dark horrors that lurk in the night.

The singer’s harsh shrieks act as a focal point in the music, his sharp screams lacerating the airwaves with ease. Deeper vocalisations are also used for added emphasis here and there and there’s quite a lot of variety in delivery across the music. All are well-performed.

Keyboards are used sparingly, as are some quite resplendent melodies on occasion. Largely though Utburd’s black metal is cold and mysterious, fashioning itself from the ashes of the second wave era and reinforcing its core foundations with further atmospheric and depressive elements. Harsh and unforgiving, while also expansive and melodic in places, this is an album that takes from its main influences without fully embracing them.

The second wave influences are strong, featuring aspects of bands such as Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir, but then these are built on by more atmospheric components that display an awareness of more contemporary acts, (Nightbringer, for example), as well as some more quirky old-school ones, (such as Ebony Lake). The depressive black metal side of the band is less obvious than the other two, but manifests in Utburd’s slower, more despondent moments.

This is quite a well-rounded and multifaceted release that takes some time to truly explore and get to know. Although it has many familiar features for fans of this sort of thing to enjoy, it also has a quirky, unconventional side that takes longer to fully appreciate.

Неописуемый ужас — благо это одна из вариаций перевода названия альбома, но никак не оценка ему. С самим релизом всё более чем в порядке. Композитором и мультиинструменталистом на “The Horrors Untold” выступил единственный участник Utburd — Tuor. Кстати, как-то так получается, что последнее время обозреваю множество альбомов именно one-man-бэндов. В голове всё чаще проскальзывает мысль, что будущее музыки за такими проектами. Концептуальными, аутентичными, сделанными по принципу «хочешь сделать что-то хорошо — сделай это сам».

При прослушивании “The Horrors Untold” виден четкий авторский почерк одного творца в каждом треке. Разнообразный, в меру думовый, в меру приблэкованный, dark metal, где-то с вкраплениями акустических переборов, клавишных либо же плотным карданом. Грим-скрим периодически сменяется гроулом, что дополнительно прибавляет разнообразия и живости релизу. Справедливо к данной работе можно добавить тэг horror metal.

Самую хитовую композицию, словно по складывающейся традиции, выделить непросто. Однако, смело можно сказать, что квинтэссенцией, вобравшей в себя самый широкий спектр эмоций, можно назвать одноимённую с альбомом композицию. Она же и самая длинная.

Шестая композиция «He, Who Paint in Red» представлена в двух вариантах, обновленном и инструментальном 2016-го года. Послушать стоит обе, а инструментальную версию вполне можно включать фоном под мрачные компьютерные игры. Как саундтрек к соответствующим фильмам — тоже более чем подходяще. Товарищи, режиссёры, вам на заметку, если читаете это.

Атмосферный саунд отлично подчёркивается мрачной, словно сошедшей со страниц лавкрафтианских произведений, обложкой. За неё благодарить следует дизайн-студию Paint-It-Black. По названиям композиций нетрудно догадаться, что и в лирике отсылки к Говарду Филлипсу имеются. Помимо Дагона и прочих радостей «древних», вот например, во второй, довольно яростной песне, повествуется о чёрном маге, алхимике, оккультисте и некроманте. Да, «The Mystery of Joseph Karven» посвящена событиям повести «Случай Чарльза Декстера Варда». Очень рекомендую приобрести физическое издание данной работы и дополнительно ознакомиться с лирикой. Никогда не будет лишним помимо хорошего саунда заиметь в коллекции красиво оформленную работу.

8 мрачных историй, одна страшнее и одновременно меланхоличнее другой. “The Horrors Untold” настоящая находка для ценителей жанра. Пожелаем успехов проекту и будем следить за дальнейшим развитием оленегорского Utburd.

Ałtra one man band di provenienza russa, quella denominata Utburd si presenta come portatrice di un black metal atmosferico e dalle venature depressive.

In parte si può di anche essere d’accordo con entrambe le affermazioni, benché tali elementi non siano così evidenti nel corso dell’intero album.

L’operato di Tuor, musicista residente nella zona di Murmansk, sembra piuttosto ricordare quei lavori nei quali emergono semmai sonorità piuttosto dissonanti, senza lasciare spazio a quelle aperture melodiche che sarebbe lecito attendersi viste le premesse.

The Horrors Untold, secondo full length targato Utburd, fin dal titolo fa presagire riferimenti alla letteratura lovecraftiana, cosa puntualmente verificabile da brani come Rise Of Dagon e The Mystery Of Joseph Karven (che i realtà dovrebbe essere Joseph Curwen, protagonista di The Case Of Charles Dexter Ward, ma credo possa trattarsi di uno dei guai della traslitterazione dal cirillico); l’orrore evocato a livello di intenti fatica un po’ ad emergere, in quanto il sound mostra un volto per lo più solenne ed algido, il che non è affatto male di per sé ma paga alla lunga una certa mancanza di picchi qualitativi, forse a causa anche di una produzione che restituisce suoni quasi riverberati.

Alla fine, come per tutti quelli che saccheggiano a livello lirico l’opera del solitario di Providence, non si può non provare un moto di empatia nei confronti di Tuor, ma ciò non basta ad evitare di derubricare l’album alla voce discreto ma non imprescindibile.

La ricerca di un maggiore pathos da riversare nelle composizioni potrebbe rivelarsi la chiave di volta per inchiodare l’ascoltatore alla prossima occasione; resta comunque la sensazione d’essere al cospetto di un progetto interessante e non banale, che ha solo la necessita di rifinire alcuni aspetti che ne frenano al momento il decollo.

Utburd are a solo project from Russia that plays a very atmospheric and depressive form of black metal and this is a review of his 2018 album "The Horrors Untold" which was released by Satanath Records.

Tragic sounding keyboards start off the album along with a variety of many different sounding keys which also mixes in with the heavier sections of the music at times while the solos and leads are done in a very melodic style as well as the vocals being mostly grim yet high pitched black metal screams.

Most of the tracks are very long and epic in length while all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them along with one track also introducing clean guitars and nature sounds onto the recording as well as a couple of later songs also adding in a small amount of spoken word parts and whispers, all of the music sticks to either a slow or mid paced musical direction and the album closes with an instrumental.

Utburd plays a style of black metal that is very atmospheric and depressive sounding, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover the writings of H.P Lovecraft and Death themes.

In my opinion Utburd are a very great sounding atmospheric and depressive black metal solo project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this recording.

Tão bom termos algo que encaixa perfeitamente num estilo mas que ao mesmo tempo nos consegue surpreender. Os Utburd são russos (ou melhor é russo, já que se trata de uma one-man-band) e "The Horros Untold" é o seu segundo álbum de black metal depressivo e atmosférico. A forma como o fazem é que surpreende. Mais directo, terra-a-terra e sem se esconderem por de trás de toneladas de reverb (não que haja alguma coisa de errado nisso, até porque gostamos muito dessa estética), as malhas aqui apresentadas trazem a meloncolia de uma forma zangada e agressiva, uma mistura que não é comum vermos mas que resulta bastante bem. Falta ainda termos um pouco de algo mais memorável mas não deixa de ser uma surpresa muito agradável.

Heute geht unsere Reise in den Norden Russlands. An Norwegen und Finnland angrenzend befindet sich die Region Murmansk, aus der das seit 2014 aktive Ein-Mann-Projekt Utburd stammt. Auf ein Demo im Gründungsjahr folgten bisher 2 Alben, das Jüngste davon heißt „The Horrors Untold“ und beinhaltet richtig schönen Atmospheric Black Metal.

Eine Stunde füllt das Album mit seinen 8 Songs aus und packt da nicht gerade wenig rein. Druckvoller Black Metal mit atmosphärischen Dark Metal-Segmenten, düsterer Orchestration und viel schwarze Energie sind die Zauberworte. Düster und doomig walzen die Songs sich behäbig und doch extrem energiegeladen aus den Lautsprechern und erzeugen eine Stimmung irgendwo zwischen Behemoth, Burzum, majestätischem Atmospheric Black und etwas Doom Metal. Riffwände drücken sich mächtig durch die Luft, kraftvolle Drums treiben die Songs voran und erhabene Keyboards komprimieren die eh schon dichte Atmosphäre des Albums. Häufige Tempowechsel, interessante Soli und energiegeladenes Spiel halten das Album konstant spannend während die fesselnde Atmosphäre und die schiere Kraft der Stücke ihr Übriges tun. Dazu können die am Death Metal orientierten Screams weitere Akzente setzen und überzeugen sowohl in den tieferen Stimmlagen als auch bei röchelndem Keifen überzeugen. Egal ob Cosmic Black („The Mystery of Joseph Karven„), schwerer, ambientbeladener Doom („The Horror Untold„) oder donnernder, schnelles Black Metal-Gemetzel („Death from Mount Tempest„), Utburd liefert immer brettstarkes Songwriting, das nicht zuletzt durch die ziemlich ordentliche Produktion viel Energie bereithält.

Wer auf dichten und ordentlich drückenden Black/Doom Metal steht, der mit viel Variation und Atmosphäre daher kommt, der sollte hier unbedingt mal reinhören. Utburd klingen auf ihrem 2. Album bereits als wären sie bereits seit 20 Jahren im Studio unterwegs ohne ihre Frische zu verlieren. „The Horrors Untold“ ist einfach ein Brocken von einem „Dark Metal“-Album.

Man, Russia must be a dark, grim and depressing place to live, if the high quality of miserable black metal that snakes its way out of the country is anything to go by. Utburd, a one man bleak atmospheric black metal project, has released ‘The Horrors Untold’ earlier this year through Satanath Records, and it is a mesmerising plunge into the darkest parts of the great, grim north.

Opener ‘Rise of Dagon’ begins with glacial guitar that steadily bleeds into a weeping ooze of traditional black metal. ‘The Horrors Untold’ has a lot more narrative running through it than a lot of depressive/atmospheric black metal, like the creepy ‘Mystery of Joseph Karven’ or the coldness of ‘Death from Mount Tempest’. It isn’t just waves of riffing without structure, it manouevres deftly between scowling second wave and a grasp of the atonal, the off kilter. The title track is a looming beast of gloom and bleak darkness, swamped in ethereal atmospherics but with a satisfying heft to it.

Utburd’s black metal is definitely depressive and atmospheric but it doesn’t fall into the tedious, monotonous traps that many of this genre can. There is plenty of variety, cool riffing and a plethora of melancholic melody lines to get lost in. ‘He, Who Paints in Red’ is the best example from a record that shimmers with glacial fury.

Le one-man-band, ormai una mania. L'ultima in ordine di tempo a comparire sulla mia scrivania è quella del russo Vitaliy Goryunov (alias Tuor) che con i suoi Utburd e questo ''The Horrors Untold', taglia il traguardo del secondo album, dopo l'esordio datato 2016, 'The Attraction to the Infernal Nature'. La proposta del mastermind di Olenegorsk ci conduce nei meandri del black atmosferico, quello un po' malato e corredato da una matrice musicale disarmonica e pertanto ostica da digerire. Tutto ciò è confermato già dall'opener, "Rise of Dagon", una traccia che non scivola via in modo fluido ma anzi, nel suo incedere sludgy, unisce un black mid-tempo a rare aperture melodiche. E quel grigiore sludge che percepivo nell'opener, diviene black doom nella seguente "The Mystery Of Joseph Karven", una song che sembra trasporre in musica quell'orrore menzionato nel titolo dell'album. Il brano cresce in intensità e pathos, grazie ad una forte ambientazione orrorifica (ottime a tal riguardo le keys), arricchita dall'ampio spettro vocale di Vitaliy, capace di spaziare su differenti timbriche sia in scream che in growl. Il disco prosegue su questa scia, attraversando lugubri atmosfere che sembrano emergere da qualche libro del buon H.J. Lovecraft: penso alle campane che suonano a morte in "Death From Mount Tempest" o quelle più festose all'inizio di "Pikman's Triumph", in un'alternanza musicale faticosa da godere, ma di sicuro interesse, che persiste nel muoversi tra oscuri e decadenti paesaggi, paurosi presagi di morte in un lungo ed estenuante viaggio che sfiora l'ora di durata (gli undici minuti della title track li troverete come i più dispendiosi da affrontare), fino alla conclusiva bonus track "He, Who Paint In Red", pezzo strumentale del 2016, mai pubblicato fino ad ora. Interessante proposta ma non proprio imprescindibile.

When it comes to gloom and powerful melancholy, very few can measure up to the Russians. This is true in poetry, but also very much so in regards to the slower, more distorted genres on the Metal spectrum. Of worthy note I could mention Who Dies in Siberian Slush as well as Istina (both of which are bands that long ago won over my heart), and today, into the spotlight of my attention steps another contender: The one-man band Utburd.

Compared to the two former bands, Utburd is fairly new in the world, having existed as a band for four years as of 2018 (which, incidentally is also the year in which I am making this scribble. But I digress – My apologies). In that time, however, he has released two Full-length records, each with its own focus. The one I have had the pleasure of spinning for the last couple of days is an Atmospheric Black Metal record heavily inspired by the themes, as well as feeling of, early Lovecraftian stories.

This is particularly evident when looking at the names and lyrics of the seven tracks (eight if you count the instrumental bonus track), referencing such iconic characters as Dagon and Pickman (on the songs “Rise of Dagon” and “Pickman’s Triumph” respectively). This was a considerably nice surprise for a big Lovecraft fans like myself – But it should be noted that this is by no means a requirement in order to be able to enjoy the record.

Musically the albums supports the overall feel and themes of its chosen lyrics quite nicely, being somewhat slow, heavily atmospheric and intent upon dragging the listener deep into its musical dream scape. And for a band that has been around for less than half a decade, I would say that The Horrors Untold does an impressively great job in pulling that off.

The music is well-written and well-executed, and it does have the beginning hint of a unique, personal sound; Something that I love and always seek out in a band (to a certain extent, but that is another topic). What it lacks, is experience – And this takes time. But overall, I would say that this lone Russian is off to a great start.

This one-hour long album is recommended for fans of The Great Old Ones, Istina and Cepheide.

Атмосферно-блэковый трибьют творчеству Лавкрафта в виде нового, второго по счёту альбома one-man-проекта Utburd меня очень долго не хотел цеплять, а происходило это по одной простой и даже элементарной причине: не было времени отложить дела, сесть и настроиться на музыку, ни на что не отвлекаясь. Когда отступать было уже дальше некуда, тянуть с рецензией более не представлялось возможным, и я таки оказался в кресле напротив колонок, из которых на меня вот-вот готовы были в очередной раз снизойти “несказанные ужасы” авторства Туора (так зовут мастермайнда Utburd), релиз соблаговолил, наконец, раскрыться передо мной во всём своём тёмном очаровании. Я развернул буклет, завернулся в синий иней иллюстраций от Paint-It-Black Design и сам себе стал напоминать позой и выражением лица запечатлённого в буклете Туора.

Музыка проекта достаточно специфична и с традиционным блэком общего имеет крайне мало, не очень по-блэковому звучит и хриплый голос вокалиста, лишь изредка переходящий на скрим, а музыка представляет собой атмосферно-экспериментальный саундтрек с отдельными тремоло-вставками. Помнится, из недавнего интервью с лидером Lucifer’s Dungeon я узнал, что его называют бардом от блэк-металла за склонность к пространным повествованиям и вообще за повышенный интерес к текстам, концепциям, месседжам, etc, так вот, Туор и его Utburd, как я мыслю, на блэк-бардов похож не меньше, а может, даже и больше, поскольку тот неспешный повествовательный материал, который представлен на “The Horrors Untold”, уж очень напоминает бардовские напевы под гитару обо всём, что интересует, заботит и тревожит.

Очень неспешно, с чувством, с толком и с расстановкой, Utburd проведёт терпеливого слушателя по тёмным улочкам вымерших городов, где промозглой ночной порой бродят призраки и прочая нежить, нагонят лондонского тумана и заставят поплотнее завернуться в тёплый вязаный бабушкин шарф. Барабаны-колотушки выстукивают как тамтамы впадающего в летаргию престарелого шамана, неоклассические клавишные появляются не слишком часто и тоже никуда не спешат и отнюдь не думают сеять смуту и суету, а наоборот добавляют релизу необходимый объём и глубину, в то время как гитары стараются быть и мелодичными, и доходчивыми, и разнообразными, и драйвовыми, да и вообще изощряются что есть сил. В итоге альбом воспринимается очень целостно и не скучно (при условии, что вы помните, что ритм жизни на “The Horrors Untold” совсем не такой как у современного человека, а намного более slow).

Кстати говоря, в качестве бонуса на диске представлен весьма занятный трек – инструментальное демо “He, who paint in red” с адским скрежетом подвального дисторшна и красивым гитарным перебором. Не очень понимаю, почему издающий лейбл сравнивает “The Horrors Untold” с Behemoth, а вот параллелей с The Vision Bleak на альбоме можно найти немало. Если у вас наблюдается возможность для медитаций в компании с вашей стересистемой и присутствует пара-другая качественного брендового алкоголя, который можно было бы с удовольствием распить под соответствующий аккомпанемент, смело покупайте этот CD и наслаждайтесь. Любители одиноких прогулок в наушниках по заброшенным паркам и мокрым осенним улицам также не будут разочарованы, а вот слушать этот поэтический бард-блэк мимоходом и абы как категорически не рекомендуется – нужно вникать и вслушиваться. Очень достойный диск.

Rosja to wielki kraj. Pomimo tego, nigdy nie kojarzył się z wielka ilością zespołów metalowych. Taka Finlandia choćby, kasuje swego sąsiada w przedbiegach. Od jakiegoś czasu jednak, dzięki znajomości z Aleksem z Satanath Records, jest mi dane poznawać rosyjskie podziemie, co czasami owocuje wyłowieniem ciekawych projektów. Ten o którym dzisiaj przeczytacie, pochodzi z rejonów Murmańska, czyli terenów bliskich Finlandii, co pewnie przypadkiem nie jest, bo znajdziemy w tamtych stronach jeszcze kilka innych, ciekawych zespołów. Widocznie tak silna jest moc oddziaływania fińskiej potęgi.

Utburd, jednoosobowy projekt, pochodzi z Oleniegorska. Jest to niewielkie miasto położone na południe od Murmańska. Trochę kojarzy mi się z moimi rodzinnymi Tychami, bo powstało po drugiej wojnie, bo jest tam sporo bloków, oraz kopalnia (która stała się początkiem rozwoju miasta). Wedle niezawodnego Metal Archives, Utburd wykonuje – a jakże – mój ukochany „atmosferyczny/depresyjny black metal”. Nie będę już pisał po raz kolejny jak bardzo mam dość tej łatki i tej muzyki, powiem tylko, że po raz kolejny nie zgodzę się z redaktorami szanownej Encyklopedii Metalu. O ile jeszcze atmosferyczny jako tako możemy tu zastosować, to z depresyjnym muzyka Utburd wiele wspólnego nie ma. Pewne jest to, że jest to black metal. I to całkiem ciekawy. Pierwsze co zwraca uwagę, to przyjemna oprawa graficzna „The Horrors Untold”. Okładka, tytuł i to co w środku (grafiki i teksty), tworzą pewną całość, jednolitą w odbiorze. Nie jest to raczej album koncepcyjny, ale jednak udało się twórcy stworzyć dzieło spójne. Szczególną uwagę polecam zwrócić na warstwę liryczną, bo teksty są długie i ciekawe. Każdy opowiada inną historię, na co zresztą wskazuje tytuł albumu. Jest to drugi pełniak Utburd, poprzednik ukazał się w 2016 roku, jednak nic o nim nie wiem, bo jeszcze nie miałem okazji go posłuchać. „The Horrors Untold” to osiem utworów dających łącznie prawie godzinę muzyki. Trochę dużo, biorąc pod uwagę, że black metal tu serwowany to wolne i średnie tempa, co przy tak długim czasie trwania może znużyć. Faktycznie, momentami mam ochotę zapytać czy „daleko jeszcze do końca?”, dlatego skróciłbym tę płytę. Jednak dla miłośników gatunku, nie powinna być to wada, bo Utburd gra ciekawie, dojrzale i na poziomie, którego nie powinien się wstydzić. Słyszałem wiele jednoosobowych projektów w tym nurcie i z ręką na sercu powiadam, że projekt Tuora jest jednym z tych, którym mogę poświęcić więcej czasu. Argumentem, który za tym przemawia jest klimat i atmosfera. Atmosfera grozy i horroru, nie smutku i depresji. Atmosfera świetnie korespondująca z tekstami i okładką. Słychać i widać, że jest to album przemyślany, stworzony wg konkretnego planu i zamysłu i za to brawa, bo moim zdaniem wyszło fajnie. Żałuję tylko, że Tuor tak rzadko przyspiesza, bo w tych nielicznych fragmentach, gdy już się odważy, sprawdza się naprawdę dobrze. Chętnie usłyszałbym więcej szybszych partii jego autorstwa w przyszłości. Bo to, że muzykiem jest utalentowanym, jest dla mnie oczywiste. Wystarczy posłuchać tego albumu. Oczywiście, są aspekty do poprawy, ale ponieważ nie jestem miłośnikiem tego gatunku, zawsze takowe znajdę. Jestem natomiast pewien, że ci, którzy zasłuchują się w takiej muzyce, koniecznie powinni Utburd poznać. Ja sam mam zamiar śledzić przyszłe dokonania projektu z Oleniegorska a to już naprawdę sporo znaczy.

O Utburd é um projeto black metal do músico russo Vitalli “Tuor” Goryunov, um multi-instrumentista que investe nos modos mais atmosféricos e depressivos do metal negro.

O formato one man band é quase uma tradição do gênero, e o Utburd busca fincar suas bases nestas tradições, principalmente das moldadas pela segunda geração do black metal, com vocais ásperos, movimentos ríspidos, clima gélido e noturno.

Claro que a ambientação sombria ganha mais densidade pelo atrito de melodias e agressividade, sendo um descendente direto de “Hvis lyset tar oss”, clássico do Burzum lançado em 1994, moldado com a estética climática menos cáustica dos primeiros álbuns de nomes como Cradle of Filth e Dimmu Borgir.

Uma obscuridade gélida que é a matéria prima de “The Horrors Untold”, segundo full lenght do Utburd, sucessor de “The Attraction to the Infernal Nature”, lançado em 2015, seguindo o padrão de que a tônica da sua música está baseada em guitarras cortantes, alternadas com linhas melódicas e climáticas, com mais dramaticidade e melancolia do que o exercício da arte da destruição.

Ou seja, o diferencial do Utburd está na abordagem depressiva, buscando diversidade no quesito “harmonias profundas e tristes”, por dobras melódicas no limite do tempo, mas de rumo inesperado, não buscando somente a desolação.

Os climas são bem construídos com teclados, responsáveis pela dramaticidade destas oito faixas (“He, Who Paint in Red”, vem em duas versões) donas de uma beleza gélida e morta. Nesse modelo, existe uma adimensionalidade arcana, que combina com a temática inspirada por H. P. Lovecraft e seu panteão de demônios cósmicos.

Analisando friamente “The Horrors Untold”, podemos enaltecer os riffs bem feitos e as melodias pesadas, ambos à moda mais polida do Black Metal, mantendo a aspereza necessária para ser impactante mesmo com circunlóquios climáticos e atmosféricos, emoldurando vocais ríspidos que, no geral, buscam renovar os modos minimalistas do black metal noventista, carregado de nostalgia e personalidade.

As vibrações fúnebres possuem detalhes expressivos e dramáticos que não descaraterizam a fórmula.

Como temos apenas um músico na concepção de “The Horrors Untold” não temos exibições atléticas e ultra-técnicas, focando no sentimento.

Mesmo assim, o resultado é dinâmico e interessante, principalmente nas linhas de bateria e nos vocais que parecem grunhidos de fossais abissais do cosmo, mas também aparecem limpos aqui e acolá (como em “The Mystery of Joseph karven”).

Aos meus ouvidos, o Utburd se dá melhor nas faixas longas, onde sua fórmula funciona muito bem, gerando destaques como “Rise of Dagon”, ” Pikman’s Triumph”, “The Horror Untold” e “He, Who Paint in Red”, com mudanças interessantes nos arranjos e andamentos, e movimentos macabros.

Não é a oitava maravilha do mundo do black metal moderno, mas, de fato, “The Horror Untold” é um álbum coeso, com conceito musical e personalidade bem definidos.

Desde Rusia (Olenegorsk, Murmansk Oblast) viene esta one man band de Black Metal atmosférico y depresivo en lo que es su segundo larga duración. The Horrors Untold se sitúa por derecho propio en plena hornada sinfónica del género con galantes a lo DIMMU BORGIR o CRADLE OF FILTH en su época de máximo esplendor.

Tras la intro de rigor, Rise Of Dagon nos estalla en toda la cara con unos fantásticos y pegadizos riffs de guitarra. A pesar de tratarse del proyecto en solitario de Tuor (todos los instrumentos), la verdad es que suena bastante compacto (quizás falla un poco la cosa en los tramos lentos en que la batería suena algo descompasada).

La forma de abordar las voces tienen muchísimo de Shagrath (DIMMU BORGIR) aunque también podría recordarnos algo a los SATYRICON. En la misma línea transcurren temas como "Death From Mount Tempest", muy al estilo de los tramos más crudos de álbumes como Enthrone Darkness Triumphant.

Los teclados sinfónicos aguantan la estructura de "The Mystery of Joseph Karven", tema a medio tiempo que se decanta por el Black depresivo. Líneas lánguidas de guitarra que flotan en la lejanía y unas vocales bastante bien trabajadas. "Pikman´s Triumph" es uno de los puntos fuertes del disco; tras una buena introducción de teclados UTBURD cabalga el medio tiempo a la perfección.

No es original pero está bien trabajado. Si tengo que quedarme con un corte sería el homónimo "The Horror Untold", mucho más al ralentí, con guitarras melancólicas, recitados y en suma todo eso que mantuvo un género en boga en los 90. Un largo (quizás demasiado) tema donde UTBURD desarrolla todo su potencial.

"He Who Paint In Red" rompe el álbum por completo lanzándose por derroteros ambientales. Voces susurradas y algo de Pagan. Creo que es en estos pasajes tan lentos donde el proyecto gana enteros convirtiéndose en una especie de BATHORY tocado al límite del doom. Curioso inicio el de "Waiting For Death Is Worse" con un hipnótico riff de guitarra sobre el que se va desarrollando otra violenta dosis nórdica. Muy buena por cierto la ambientación que consigue el piano y finiquitando un álbum (salvo un bonus track instrumental que no aporta nada) bastante conseguido que no defraudará a fanáticos del estilo.

Here's something a bit different for a change: Utburd plays doom-ish and slightly progressive Black Metal with a pretty desperate-sounding vibe. The Horrors Untold is the band's second album.

Vitaliy Goryunov (aka Tuor) is solely responsible for this creation. I consider Tuor one gifted fellow because he knows what it takes to make his solo project work. He is at his best in those more atmospheric, mid-tempo parts that seem to open new doors into the unknown. The use of both death growls and Black Metal snarls also work together very well. "Death from Mouth Tempest" has all that this band is about musically. The title track has this nice tendency to send some cold shivers down your spine, being one of the heaviest-sounding songs on this opus, with a guaranteed ominous atmosphere.

Města duchů jsou plná senzacechtivých zvědavců, kteří nečtou ani výstražné cedule, natož aby se před vstupem na území nikoho vzdělávali čtivem, jak se ochránit před obyvateli stejného místa z jiné časové roviny a dimenze. Možná nějací straširybkové se pokusí o jakousi osvětu svého sebevědomí, ale ve své nadutosti nabudou dojmu, že vědí, co vědět je potřeba a neohroženě se vydávají vstříc své vlastní hlouposti. V neodolatelné nevědomosti zapomínají, že časová smyčka je děvka neposedná, které se nemusí vyhnout tak lehce jako telegrafnímu sloupu a dimenzionální bránu mohou otevřít pouhým šlápnutím do psího lejna uprostřed mrtvé ulice. Ovšem někteří po tom touží a záměrně vyhledávají dobrodružství z jiných světů. Jenomže i záměr potřebuje vzdělání, které nejde z nedočkavosti koupit. V každém případě chtějí všichni všechno prožít ještě mladí a chtějí dát vědět všem ostatním, že oni jsou ti hrdinové, co něco dokázali. Někteří nic nedokázali, tak si alespoň vymyslí hrdé příběhy, které jim stejně nikdo nevěří, protože nic nezažili, ani nic nevěděli. Někteří možná sice nic nedokázali, nebo byli alespoň obdařeni talentem vyprávět věrohodně neuvěřitelné příběhy. Do které kategorie patří ruský ogar Tuor, který vede one man band UTBURD, je na každém z vás. Mně přijde, že se ponořil docela hluboko do svého vlastního světa temnoty a snad se s ním dokázal i ztotožnit, jenom nenašel prozatím tu správnou formu, jak to přesvědčivě sdělit dál. Jeho atmosférickému black metalu na albu „The Horrors Untold“ něco chybí a to něco je právě přesvědčivá atmosféra. I když ono jak se to vezme. Třeba nejsem schopen s jeho světem se ztotožnit. Přesto se k němu neobracím zády. Jeho muzika je plná zajímavých momentů. Zejména si umí pohrát s efekty, jejichž většinu si tipuji, že stvořil na klávesy. Ty vnášejí do muziky zajímavý druh morbidního chaotična s afektovaností hrůzy, děsu a mysteriózna. Jenomže Tuor jako by se něčeho bál. Možná se bojí otevřít dokořán dveře do vlastního já, ale možná se taky bojí jisté zaprodanosti. Za tímto účelem se snaží být možná až sveřepě black metalový. Ne že by jeho kytarové poryvy byly vyloženě špatné, ale není to ani nic, na čem by se dalo právě přesvědčivě stavět. Navíc zbytečně neotesanej zvuk hrubých kytar mi k jeho muzice moc nesedí a budí spíše dojem bezprizorního násilí na dálkové ovládání. Různými těmi efekty na podporu dramatičnosti své muziky zbytečně šetří a klávesové plochy jako by se bál Tuor rozvinout více do šířky. Je sice pěkný být undergroundovým umělcem, ale ne za každou cenu. Tvorba UTBURD budí tedy dojem, jako kdyby seděla na dvou black metalových židlích. Takových alb existuje spousta, ale žádné z nich mě neoslovilo na výbornou. Tady by si bylo nutné trochu přebrat, jestli chci znít možná jako The Vision Bleak nebo spíše raději jako třeba Behemoth. Obojí dohromady mi až tak moc nesedí a z mého úhlu neřestného pohledu bych se v případě UTBURD přikláněl k první variantě, která kapele přeci jenom svědčí více.

Utburd on their release “The Horrors Untold” shows us a very good, frightening and mystic material which lies between Doom and Black metal and soaked with a morbid atmosphere of nightmares. Slow dissonant and slightly detuned distortion riffs mixed with clean arpeggios on guitar and piano, voice is changed from grim scream to growl, the whole sound of release is like funeral in cold rainy November day. Starting from the short introduction “The Horrors Untold” shows rather fast material but it becomes slower and slower with each track. And after the track “Pikman’s Triumph” sound becomes crawling and swallowing everything into darkness. Sometimes in fast moments Utburd slightly reminds me Lux Occulta for their mystic atmosphere, but sound is more sick and atmospheric. “The Horrors Untold” should be really good as a soundtrack for a good mystic horror movie or for a long and dark autumnal evening.

In the Swedish folkore Utburd are the spirits of dead children that lurk in the forests, haunting lone wanderer wanting to be carried. I don’t know how common this myth is in Russia but in my opinion it’s the perfect name for an atmospheric Black Metal band with a doomy and progressive touch.

The mastermind beyond this creation is Vitaliy Goryunov (aka Tuor) and he definitely knows what it takes to make this solo project work. The mid-tempo parts always seem to open new portals to the unknown and the mix of Death Metal growls and Black Metal snarls works very well.

This gloomy journey will send shivers down your spine. Perfect tune for the upcoming autumn.

En esta ocasión les traemos desde Olenegorsk, Rusia, una de las bandas extremas por excelencia llamada Utburd, siendo este disco su segundo trabajo de larga duración al que le precede en el año de 2016 “The Attraction to the Infernal Nature”.

Esta banda no es de la que se deja encasillar en tal o cual estilo, pues bajo una base muy blacker nos dejan entrever sonidos más atmosféricos y hasta depresivos, siendo Vitaliy Goryunov (único miembro de este proyecto) un músico excelente que entra y sale como quiere de estos estilos.

“The horrors untold” no te dejara indiferente, pues no lo hizo conmigo que ando alejado de estos estilos extremos pero esta banda sí que me engancho. Utburd no descubre nada nuevo, y si bien es una banda para oídos extremos siempre está la excepción y en estos casos lo único que me queda por decir es, escúchalos y disfruta de una música que si al principio no te engancha tienes que darle una segunda oportunidad, pues bien que lo hacen.

This doom/death band’s album becomes better and more appealing with each subsequent attempt because a certain number of strong riffs and beats come to the fore. With that said, all is not perfect.

The album begins with the strumming of Scorpions’ Holiday, no joke, but is soon underway with its extreme heaviness. There is much here that is serious and crushing, but unfortunately the album also comes with the usual amount of acoustic strumming, synthesizers that here sound like Pan-Thy-Monium, wind and howls and whispering voices talking about who knows what? This is why despite strong riffs this album deserves no more than a seventy grade. Interestingly, while solid riffs exist the band dips in and out of them via simpler harmonies. Additionally, this being a solo act the drum machine reigns, which is lame. All of that aside, there is much heaviness, brutal riffs even on a weaker track like Waiting For Death Is Worse. The album ends with an instrumental version of He Who Paint (sic) In Red. Apparently, the blue-tinged album is comprised of nineteenth century horror tales. Fans of early Paradise Lost, Nightfall, etc. should find something here.

I am one of those kinda guys that really, really like atmospheric black metal. the more melancholic the better. I cannot get enough of the really great ones in this genre. And I am always on the look out for something new. So when this one from UTBURD came my way I had high hopes for this one. As for the band name UTBURD. I don’t know how common this myth is in Russia but in Swedish folklore Utburd are the spirits of dead children that lurks in the forests, haunting lone wanderer wanting to be carried. In my book a perfect band name and a perfect myth for a black metal band. This isn’t the greatest atmospheric black metal I have heard but it is still good enough to warrant my liking.

Руски соло black метал бенд са сјајним омотом који ме асоцирао на хорор приче Хауарда Филипса Лавкрафта. Иако немам текстове сигуран сам да је аутору овог издања Лавкрафт свакако инспирација, на шта асоцирају називи неких од песама. Уметнички, атмосферични black метал пуног и богатог звука, за који су дефинитивно потребни и текстови како би се конзумирао комплетно и до краја. Једина слабост може да буде снимљени бубањ који је дефинитивно најслабија карика у целокупном звуку. Ипак атмосфера коју је бенд постиго оправдава и назив албума и омот. Гитарске деонице су раскошне, богате и пуне. Вокал је, поред атмосфере коју ствара музика, најзаслужнији за хорор атмосферу. Углавном моћан и јак блекерај који суверено влада а не тек неки нејаки, јадан, пуки врисак. Музика има и doom споре и тешке деонице, али не бих то назвао депресивним black металом, већ више емотивним black металом. Песме су уједначеног квалитета, махом средњег темпа, када је брзина у питању. Једно пристојно и добро издање када се све узме у обзир али ипак ништа посебно, ништа револуционарно, ни ново.

Sophomore album from Russian guy with a name Tuor, who is a an enthusiast of Lovecraft`s literature. He is giving tribute to the master of horror from Providence by lyrics and by music that he creates on all instruments.

I am fan of Lovecraft`s fictional world too and I think that front cover is pretty close to his works but music?, not necessarily...

It`s not orthodox, fast or radical music but it`s black and doom metal album which means that it has to be a bit extreme. Music tendency here is to get the atmosphere and depth of horror in general, through deep and hard guitar passages which additionally Tuor supports by adding some keyboard like effects. It`s difficult to completely oppose the atmosphere from this album, when few times music made me feel isolated like I was out of this world and I think this may come from minor post black metal influences that the album has. I have to give to Utburd that some mysteries of music have inspired my imagination somehow... I'm thinking about first half of the album that I in my opinion has better music than a second half...

I'm not overly excited about all the music; maybe I'm not even thrilled at all. I like get get goose bumps in general but I do not get it from this album. All emotions and thrills that come from reading Lovercaft books are obvious for me, but it`s hard to get the same vibe from The Horrors Untold album. I expected that in the music of this band I would find a stronger literary-musical connection, but Utburd makes the difficult task and horror of Lovecraft's literature as I know, wins against the music of this Russian metal project. In my opinion the atmosphere of this album is not much alike horrors that Lovecraft wrote in his books but on the other hand, it can be said that it is better, which is simply controversial...

The production of the album is imperfect –mixes, mastering. Tuor`s music performance is average and some guitars and drumming he has played, sound dreadful but, it`s not like it`s bad, OK?. Vocals do not give me bad impression but not too good either. Most of the effects enriched the sound and dark ambiences of songs but music in general lacks of fluency. Music performance showcases some struggle of Tuor who is not yet capable to play on all instruments at the same level. Do not get too excited about this album, unless you have to because it`s inspired by Lovecraft stuff and so on... My opinion about album is on: yes and no – I am just not convinced.

Venäläinen Utburd edustaa tunnelmallista black metal -tyylittelyä. Musiikista vastaa vain yksi henkilö, Tuor, mikä heijastuukin musiikkiin varsin makuuhuonetyylisenä ilmaisuna. Kun soittokumppaneita ei ole, ei peistä tyylistä tai laadusta tarvitse taittaa.

Kakkoslevy The Horrors Untold on liki tunnin kellottava matka fiilistelyblackin rintamille. Mukana on tuhti annos melodisuutta, reilusti syntikoita ja lajityypin huomioiden vähemmän äärimmäistä soitantaa. Ärinälaulut ovat saaneet rinnalleen puhekohtia ja vaihtoehtoisia laulutapoja, mutta muutoin homma rullaa keskitempoisesti ja tuttuja raiteita pitkin.

Paikoin Utburdin tuntuma melodioihin on hyvä ja lupaava, mutta aivan liian usein kokemus lässähtää yhdentekeväksi pannukakuksi. Tunnelma ei kanna, eikä biiseissä ole kunnollista vetovoimaa.

Lopputuloksena on unettava, yhdentekevä teos, jonka hyvät kohdat voi lopulta laskea yhden käden sormin. Levy on kelposoundinen, mutta valitettavan tyypillinen osoitus bedroom black metalin kiroista.
