Fortid are a band from Norway that plays a viking and pagan form of black metal and this is a review of their 2016 compilation album "The Demo Sessions" which was released as a joint effort between Symbol of Domination Productions, Electric Horizon Productions and Black plague Records.
A very dark, heavy, atmospheric and epic sound starts off the compilation along with the riffs also bringing in a great amount of melody while the vocals are mostly grim black metal screams and acoustic guitars along with some clean singing pagan vocals can be heard in certain sections of the recording.
Some of the cleaner sections bring in more of a medieval folk music feeling and when the music speeds up a decent amount of blast beats can be heard while the solos and leads have a very raw and melodic edge to them and all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them and some tracks also bring in a small amount of synths.
They also bring in a cover of Enslaved's "Lifandi Lifi Undir Harni" and a few of the tracks are also very long and epic in length and some of the faster sections of the songs bring in tremolo picking which adds in more of an old school 90's feeling and throughout the compilation you can also hear a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and one track also brings in a brief use of war samples.
Throughout this compilation Fortid displays a lot of variety with some songs going for a raw and Nordic style while others focus more on an epic viking or pagan metal style, the production sounds very powerful while the lyrics cover Norse Mythology.
In my opinion this is a very great sounding collection of songs from Fortid and if you are a fan of pagan or viking/black metal, you should check out this compilation. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Nornir" "Pagan Prophecies" "Sun Turns Black" and "Framtid".

Norwegian pagan metal. Not bad, definitely bears some mark of quality to it despite the hollow production, which later turns thin and hissy, then gets a little upgrade but still sounds thin in tone, then goes all muted under blankets, but turns surprisingly clear and full sounding despite that. Then it flips back and forth on the last few tracks – if every track doesn’t sound different from the one before it, then every second one does for sure.
So you guessed it, that means this is a compilation of recording sessions from Thule mainman Einar “Eldur” Thorberg – “sessions”, not “demos” in the sense of “this is all the cool stuff they did before the band got signed”.
This is the band working out ideas that hadn’t made it to albums till now, and there’s something to be said for that too…just don’t expect a “demo album” (which can sometimes be pointless, but tend to be fairly essential in the underground metal scene).
Well, I love those Thule demos, so it’s no surprise that one of his later acts would be producing music of this level of accomplishment.
It’s not as interesting as Thule, nor as “underground” in tone, but this is clearly “professional” music from experienced musicians. Doesn’t always translate to quality material, but does generally indicate excellence of performance, so take that into account.
I was hardly set on fire here, but appreciated the jump in musicianship from the splits and such I’d been listening to and reviewing prior to this (which was both jarring and dramatic).

Ok I feel like this one needs a pre-amble. Fortid are a great band they are Norwegian Black Metal so you know what to expect. They are pretty solid and have come quite a long way from being a raw one piece to the band that put out the impressive “9″ just last year. That being said The Demo Sessions aren’t quite representative of what you will get from their finished product. So if you aren’t familiar with Fortid I highly recommend you go check out 9 first. Now to the subject at hand. First off this album is as advertised, demo’s so the quality is far from top notch. Not to say there is nothing to take from it , but the quality really hampers the enjoyment and listenability of it all.
That said taken as a whole it’s interesting in the sense that there is an obvious progression from start to finish and you can definitely hear the band grow. If you’re really into the raw stuff this may be for you. Personally I like a little polish to each their own. There are a couple gems here though. Things pick up around half point with the Enslaved cover. Sadly tho the compression on these tracks just make for a tougher listen. The highest point for me was Electric Horizon that song is so good it could cut through the quality of a karaoke machine recording. Its dark , brooding and just plain nasty this one piece makes the demo sessions worth the listen and give you just the tiniest taste of what Fortid are all about.
So if you are a big fan of truly raw black metal and Fortid give it a go because they’re probably cooking up something really awesome and I’m guessing any proceeds from this will help them to finish it. And that is something to be pretty excited about.

Una buona occasione per fare la conoscenza dei Fortíð con questa compilation intitolata semplicemente The Demo Sessions.
Il gruppo nasce come one man band nel 2002, ad opera di Einar Thorberg, poi trasferitosi dal suo paese natale (l’Islanda) in Norvegia e completando la line up per arrivare a formare un quartetto composto da Rikard Jonsson al basso, Daniel Theobald alle pelli e Øystein Hansen alla sei corde.
Il gruppo del chitarrista e cantante islandese può contare una già ottima discografia, composta dalle tre parti di Völuspá, una trilogia che ha il suo inizio nel 2003 (Thor’s Anger) e continua con Völuspá Part II: The Arrival of Fenris del 2007 e Völuspá Part III: Fall of the Ages licenziato nel 2010.
Altri due full length hanno caratterizzato questi ultimi quattro anni, Pagan Prophecies uscito nel 2012 e l’ultimo 9 dello scorso anno.
The Demo Sessions contiene delle registrazioni grezze di brani già editi, una cover degli Enslaved (Lifandi lífi undir hamri) ed una traccia inedita, per quasi settanta minuti di pagan black metal dalle atmosfere epiche e folk, tutto sommato ben articolato e potente il giusto per accontentare l’appassionato dai gusti estremi ma consolidati nelle tradizioni dei paesi immersi nel freddo nord europeo.
Molti brani, essendo tracce demo, lasciano a desiderare in quanto a produzione, ma non manca certo al gruppo un’attitudine pagana e buone trame guerresche ed epiche.
Le atmosfere più pacate si indirizzano verso sfumature glaciali, un folk metal maligno supportato dalla parte metallica che gronda cattiveria, mentre è davvero interessante quella parte di sound dove le clean vocals valorizzano l’elemento folk/epico tra Bathory ed Enslaved.
Per chi conosce la discografia del gruppo, questa compilation serve solo da completamento della discografia, mentre agli altri un consiglio ad inoltrarsi nelle foreste nordiche in compagnia dei Fortíð è d’obbligo.

Von den isländischen Pagan Metallern Fortid entstanden in den Jahren 2008 bis 2015 so einige Demo Versionen, welche nun zusammengefasst in „The Demo Sessions“ erstmalig offiziell über das Label Symbol Of Domination veröffentlicht werden. Nach dem atmosphärischen und Akustik geprägten Opener „Illt Skal Met Illu Gjalda“ folgt mit dem druckvoll treibenden „Lifandi Lifi Undir Hamri“ eine Enslaved Coverversion, ehe das eindringliche „Nomir“ und das furiose „Galdur“ auf dem Fuße folgen. Das leicht progressive „Hof“ steckt hingegen voller Tempowechsel, ehe der bereits schon bekannte, aggressive und dichte Titeltrack ihrer ersten Scheibe „Pagan Prophecies“, sowie das „beißende“ „Electric Horizon“ nachrückt. Mit „Sun Turns Black“ geht es dann kompromisslos weiter, ehe der verschwörerisch startende Longtrack „Ad Handan“ nachgelegt wird. Leicht hypnotisierend macht dann „Heltekinn“ den Weg frei für das Zehnminütige Epos „Framtíð“ und beendet somit gekonnt eine raue, halt demotechnische Druckbetankung, in einer auf fünfhundert CDs limitierten Auflage.

Усі прихильники справжнього блеку повинні зацінити нову компіляцію норвезької банди Fortíð - The Demo Sessions. Спільний реліз Symbol Of Domination з Electric Horizon Productions та Black Plague Records вийшов ще влітку, а саме 25 червня.
У недалекому 2002-му ісландський музикант Einar Thorberg створив власний проект. У 2008 році він перебрався у Норвегію. Саме там у 2009 році сформувався музичний колектив, що й до сьогодні функціонує у повному складі: E. Thorberg – гітара та вокал, Ø. Hansen – гітара, R. Jonsson – бас-гітара та ударник D. Theobald. В творчому доробку Fortíð має п'ять альбомів. Шостим альбомом є вищезгадана компіляція The Demo Sessions. У альбомі представлено три пісні з альбому '9' та одноіменна пісня з альбому Pagan Prophecies, один кавер на Enslaved, сирі демо-треки та абсолютно нові композиції, записані спеціально для цього альбому. Трек-лист складається з 11 записів, загальна тривалість яких дорівнює 79 хвилинам та 11 секундам. У своїй творчості музиканти звертаються до норвезької міфології, що прослідковується у чудових текстах.
100% black/pagan metal не залишить байдужим нікого. Починаючи з першого треку "Illt skal með illu gjalda" я хотіла б відзначити активну роботу ударної секції – драмер вміє користуватись установкою, що дуже тішить. Акуратні та чіткі бластбіти, часом прослідковуються джазові прийомчики (вони є скрізь, адже ударні – це джаз, джаз, джаз), у контекст легко вписуються різноманітні збивки, що надають пікантності мелодії. Хм, мабуть в Daniel Theobald непогано накачані ноги, адже не всі зможуть з легкістю у шаленому темпі так гатити по бочці.
Бас Rikard Jonsson гармонійно зливається з партією ударних. Музика насичена атмосферністю, що досягається за допомогою синтезатора. Вам обов’язково потрібно зацінити такі треки як "Sun Turns Black", клавішну партію "Ad Handan" з ефектом акордену, соло з "Framtíð". Вокал з хорошим розщепленням ефектно накладається на музику. Гітаристи виклалися на повну. Дисторційовані гітари ревуть, як шалені, у деяких композиціях ритм постійно змінюється. Багато "смаколиків" роздають гітаристи Einar Thorberg та Øystein Hansen.
Ну і в кінці хотіла б наголосити, що цей альбом є одним з найкращих, які я прослуховувала останнім часом. The Demo Sessions вирізняється своєю концептуальністю, мелодійністю, сирістю та водночас атмосферністю, легко сприймається з першого разу. Хлопці з півночі продемонстрували гідну роботу, тому бажаю усім гарного прослуховування.

Oscurità, epica e black metal, sono i tre elementi che bruciano e alimentano questa raccolta. Einar Thorberg, conosciuto come Eldur, fonda Fortid (si scrive Fortíð) nella natia Islanda e avvalendosi di sessionmen, poi però in Norvegia trova la sua dimensione, ma soprattutto una continuità di stile. Eldur ha realizzato cinque album attraverso una tematica principale che lega insieme i primi tre, ovvero la trilogia di Völuspá. “Pagan Prophecies” (se ne parla QUI) e l’ultimo “9” (QUI recensito), completano la fase della stabilità e di una maturazione sensibilmente accresciuta. Tra il 2008 e il 2015, dunque tra i due capitoli finali della Trilogia e il recente “9”, Eldur ha raccolto qualcosa come 80’ di musica tra demo e pre-produzione e ora il tutto viene raccolto in un unico CD. Nello specifico si parla di almeno cinque differenti sessions, rappresentate da primi missaggi, registrazioni differenti dalle versioni definitive e una cover degli Enslaved, cioè “Lifandi lífi undir hamri”. “The Demo Sessions” è quasi un album: la qualità sonora è davvero buona, i brani sono coinvolgenti e respirano di quegli elementi elencati all’inizio di queste righe. La veste epica poi è micidiale, altisonante, onnipresente. Il tratto black metal è presentato come in una sorta di evoluzione, di progressiva maturazione negli anni elencati. Se è vero come si racconta, cioè che la band pensa già al sesto album, questa raccolta è un’opera della quale tenerne concretamente conto per il futuro.

Seit ihrer ersten Niederkunft zu Beginn des letzten Jahrzehnts haben diese Isländer bereits fünf Alben auf den Markt geworfen, die allesamt mit großartiger Resonanz gesegnet wurden. Vor allem "Pagan Prophecies" gilt bereits heute als Klassiker in der Pagan/Black-Metal-Szene und ist eines der wichtigsten Standardwerke jeder gut sortierten Sammlung. Doch ganz so rund lief es für FORTID trotz allem nicht immer. Die Band wurde mehrfach ins Demo-Stadium zurückversetzt und musste sich die Zusicherung der Plattenfirma jedes Mal von neuem erkämpfen. In den Jahren 2008-2015 sind somit mehrere Demos entstanden, die FORTID nun zum ersten Mal offiziell veröffentlicht. Dass große Teile der insgesamt elf Stücke hinlänglich bekannt sind, versteht sich von selbst. Doch es waren eben genau diese Demos, die den Schritt zu großartigen Platten wie "Pagan Prophecies" und "9" erst ermöglichten.
Folgerichtig ist "The Demo Sessions" auch eher als Compilation zu betrachten, die einige herausragende Momente aus dem FORTID-Katalog noch einmal rezitiert. Nummern wie 'Lifandi Lifi Undir Hamri' und 'Sun Turns Black' stehen hier vorne an, der Titelsong des besagten Klassikers und 'Electric Horizon' drängen dicht hinterher, und ein Epos wie 'Framtíð' darf natürlich auch nicht vergessen werden, wenn es um die wirklich nennenswerten Augenblicke des jüngeren Bandkatalogs geht. Die Songs beschreiben den Werdegang dieser Isländer vorzüglich und sind auch klangtechnisch ein echter Ohrenschmaus. Und selbst vor dem Hintergrund, dass man das Material größtenteils kennt, sollte man daher schauen, dass man eine der 500 CDs abgreifen kann, die das Label für "The Demo Sessions" zur Verfügung stellt - einfach nur weil FORTID eine vorzügliche Band ist und ihr Material die Pagan-Szene der letzten Jahre maßgeblich geprägt hat!

The Icelandic entity known as Fortíð is one of the more interesting and atmospheric pagan outfits out there today, and due to the band's impressive discography consisting of five rather awesome albums I was naturally quite intrigued about the prospect of digging into this demo compilation of theirs appropriately entitled "The Demo Sessions". While one could be led to believe that this compilation only appeals to hardcore fans of the band, the truth of the matter is that the eleven tunes that make up this album are way better than what countless other bands are putting out there today and market as finished products.
Filled to the brim with long, majestic, and sprawling tracks that encompass a multitude of different atmospheres and emotions, "The Demo Sessions" is a captivating listen. Even though the songs were composed and recorded between 2008 and 2015, they flow together nicely, but one can detect a musical progression from the early tunes to the relatively new ones, which is only natural. The quality of the sound also differs a bit throughout, but that is hardly surprising. The sense of the epic is both pronounced and emphasized in each and every piece, and those sweeping melodies and melancholic passages that constantly abound never fail to draw me in. Dynamic and cleverly written compositions such as "Electric Horizon", "Sun Turns Black", and "Ad Handan" are brilliant. "Heltekinn" is another highlight. There are so many twists, turns, and nuances throughout each track that one can keep coming back to them only to discover something new every time. One of the coolest things about "The Demo Sessions" is that it contains an excellent cover version of the Enslaved classic "Lifandi lífi undir hamri". If nothing else, you ought to check that one out as it is pretty impressive.
If pagan and/or epic metal is your thing, then you owe it to yourself to give "The Demo Sessions" a spin or two. There is some great stuff on this disc!

A Islândia é mesmo um tesouro no que à música em geral e na música extrema em particular diz respeito. Os Fortíð são uma das representações dessa mesma qualidade. Começando como uma one-man-band, o projecto evolui até se tornar numa banda a sério lançando cinco álbuns de qualidade acima da média. Como o próprio nome indica, o que temos aqui é o passado da banda reunido numa só rodela, o que normalmente costuma ser coisa apenas para coleccionadores fanáticos. No entanto, aquilo que esta compilação oferece é um pouco mais especial, já que a banda não tem nenhuma demo oficialmente lançada, portanto, o material aqui contido é totalmente inédito, mesmo que encontremos versões em bruto de temas que apareceram nos últimos três álbuns de originais, além de termos uma cover de Enslaved "Lifandi Lífi Undir Hamri". Mesmo com flutuações de volume, esta é uma compilação obrigatória para todos os fãs de black metal pagão.

In our review for ’9’ in Spring 2015, we already mentioned that this happened to be excellent material for aficionados of Solstafir, Skálmöld, Myrkgrav and Windir, due to the epic heathen character of the in black metal rooted music. About fourteen years ago the idea of the foundation of Fortid came up in the mind of Einar ‘Eldur’ Thorberg in the harsh environment of Iceland. He managed to realize a magnificent crafted trilogy (theme: Asatrú literature and Völuspá) and relocated to Norway afterwards in 2008. Over there he gathered a band around him, so that Fortid was able to play live gigs and ’Pagan Prophecies’ happened to be the first physical evidence of that cooperation or, in other words, team spirit.
Now ‘The Demo Sessions’ have been released in limited edition (five hundred copies). Fortid never released any demos, but naturally they have recorded some. Now these are shared with the fans. One can find recordings of four sessions in the pre-production mode of ‘Fall Of The Ages’, ‘Pagan Prophecies’ and ‘9’. The interesting thing is that we can find a new song and an Enslaved cover on this eighty minutes long disc. Recordings took place in 2015. They are working hard on the sixth studio album now, so that we can expect more new material pretty soon. That is something to look forward to, because the new song ‘Illt Skal Med Illu Gjalda’ and the cover version of the ancient Enslaved track ‘Lifandi Lifi Undir Hamri’ sound promising.

Het IJslandse Fortíð is een graag geziene gast bij Zware Metalen. Alle albums van deze pagan/viking metalband werden gesmaakt, en dat zijn er tot nu toe vijf. Een demo was er niet, de debuutplaat was meteen een voltreffer. Tot nu, want alle demomateriaal komt uit op een verzamelaar. De omgekeerde wereld.
Nu, dat klopt niet helemaal. Tussen verschillende releases door moest de band meermaals op zoek naar een nieuw label, en bepaalde nummers van de “demo’s” die verstuurd werden naar verschillende labels zijn nu dus op The Demo Sessions gezet. Beetje vreemd, want de studio-opnames staan op de reguliere uitgaves, maar kom, goed voor de fans zullen we maar zeggen. Galdur en Sun Turns Black zijn aanraders, en ook de Enslaved-cover Lifandi lífi undir hamri is geen tijdsverlies (dat is Fortíð nooit). Ik concludeer dan ook dat The Demo Sessions een fijne reminder is dat deze band bestaat, al prefereer ik nieuw materiaal.

Fortíð serves us bleak black metal with much Viking attitude, and they’ve got it down pat. The band’s origin is in Iceland, but Norway is now their home. “Fortíð” is Icelandic for the word, “past,” and we’re honored to be taken back in time to examine Norse lore throughout their records. Fortíð’s latest work is “The Demo Sessions,” released in 2016. It’s a compilation of tunes that’ll leave you floored by how relentlessly gripping they are.
“Illt skal með illu gjalda” introduces the album with swarming black metal riffs and acidic harsh vocals. It’s not long before something beautiful happens: Clean vocals appear and settle into breathtaking instrumentation.
The second track is Fortíð’s cover off of a classic Enslaved record, “Vikingligr veldi.” Their version of “Lifandi lífi undir hamri” is a real showstopper that would make Enslaved proud. After this, we get better acquainted with how Fortíð have stamped their originality on the extreme metal circuit. On “Nornir,” catchy phrasing appears, acting as a reminder that the guys understand the importance of leaving listeners with something memorable. Next, the nearly rhythmic “Galdur” steps heavily while angry guitar riffs claw from a distance. “Hof” is a downright ode to emotional intensity, and the “Pagan Prophecies” is a bold offering; watch for the soulful guitar solo that appears here.
“Electric Horizon” and “Sun Turns Black” turn out to be a devious pair, unleashing symphonic tendencies that seem to command with grit.
Pay close attention to the surfacing of “Ad Handan,” which has a melancholy dawning and grows in these sorrowful tones once percussion arrives. The whole piece is wickedly delectable.
“Heltekinn” has an appealing structure. Inside, mighty guitar-work reigns. We part ways with the mournful chiming of “Framtíð.” Reflective and thunderous, it’s a fitting way to end the record.
The melodies on “The Demo Sessions” range from expressive and heartfelt to frosty and unforgiving. The traditional mystique of black metal is present. Somewhere within the tones, I feel the way Fortíð communicates an open, honest vibe in the music, and you just can’t help but pick a song and lose yourself in the grim.

I have no idea if I’ve reviewed a FORTID album or if I’ve just seen the name float about. This Icelandic band is another piece of the wonder that is the Icelandic music scene. They might have moved away from the island but you can take the people of the island but you can’t take the island from the people. This is black metal in the Norwegian school. You can almost hear the forest in the sound. You can think of almost any 90s Norwegian black metal band and you’ll get a picture of what this’ll sound like. The “Hall of the mountain King” feeling is ever so present on these early recordings by FORTID. This might be old songs but they still work today.

Siempre me cuesta poner Noruega como país de origen de esta banda pues el grupo es originariamente de Islandia. Mejor dicho, Einar "Eldur" Thorberg es islandés y es el padre de la criatura. Pero, como ya es sabido, "Eldur" se mudó a Noruega a fines del 2008, y de ahí arranca un nuevo capítulo en la historia de esta muy buena banda.
"The Demo Sessions", como ya deben imaginar, es un compilado que aglutina cinco diferentes sesiones, cinco grabaciones de Demos usados para distintos motivos, y que resultan ser exhibiciones contundentes de la calidad de esta banda. Es que si una canción suena bien en el Demo, es probable que luego, en el disco, suene muy bien. Y con Fortíð sucede que uno escucha las versiones de los discos, y las compara con los Demos, y es evidente que estamos ante una gran banda con grandes canciones. Grabaciones crudas de canciones de la banda, 2 sesiones enteras de Demos de canciones que luego terminaron formando parte de "Pagan Prophecies", un cover de Enslaved (es clara la influencia de Enslaved en la música de la banda de "Eldur"), más una composición hecha especialmente para la ocasión (según la gacetilla de prensa, esa canción es "Illt skal með illu gjalda", la que abre el disco).
Paganismo, melodías épicas, buen gusto, intensidad a granel, y una crudeza que no estamos acostumbrados a escuchar en los trabajos de una de la bandas de Black Metal más elegantes y profundas que el género ha visto surgir desde el interior de sus filas en los últimos años. Y es esa crudeza en el sonido la que hizo que algunos miren de reojo al disco que la banda lanzó como entremés para degustar mientras esperamos por el sexto álbum en estudio del grupo, el cual está al caer, y su anterior y magistral disco de estudio, el fabuloso "9", disco que reseñamos aquí.
He leído comentarios acerca de lo poco que impresiona escuchar a Fortíð en su forma más pura y menos producida, y me parece una tontería eso pues, al tratarse de maquetas, el encanto consiste, justamente, en apreciar las composiciones en su forma más primitiva, con un sonido para nada elaborado y con la banda descargando su música sin retoques ni trabajos de estudio. Es más, me parece de un alto grado de emotividad lo que producen pistas como "Framtíð", "Galdur" o "Hof" en sus versiones primigenias. Escuchar melodías tan emocionantes, tan sensibles y poderosas a la vez, sin todo el trabajo de producción al cual nos tienen acostumbrados "Eldur" y compañía, sin la limpieza y ni el poder que se desprende de sus discos en estudio, me permite corroborar que son grandes canciones de verdad.
Además, y como bien dije un poco más arriba, "The Demo Sessions" es un entretenimiento de calidad para no despreciar, pues sirve para calmar la ansiedad. Ya falta poco para que tengamos un nuevo disco en estudio, y "The Demo Sessions" ayuda a paliar la espera.

I Fortíð sono sicuramente una delle entità più sottovalutate dell’intero panorama estremo e solo per la scarsa attività live non sono riusciti a raggiungere la celebrità che avrebbero meritato. Prima nella natia Islanda e poi in Norvegia, il polistrumentista Einar "Eldur" Thorberg ha saputo destreggiarsi in ambito viking e black metal grazie ai servigi del chitarrista Øystein Hansen, anche nei Thornbound, del bassista Rikard Jonsson e dello straordinario batterista Daniel Theobald, attivo anche con Curse, Den Saakaldte e 13 Candles. ‘Pagan Prophecies’ e ‘9’ sono stati i lavori che hanno ottenuto un maggiore riscontro nella comunità mentre questa raccolta di demo, limitata a cinquecento copie, tende a riscoprire il lato più grezzo e misterioso del progetto. Nonostante l’assenza di masterizzazione e suoni non certo all’altezza delle produzioni moderne, in scaletta spiccano la reprise di ‘ Lifandi Liv Undir Hamri’ degli Enslaved, opener del loro ameno debutto ‘Vikingligr Veldi’, e ‘Electric Horizon’, che svela tutte le peculiarità della visione dei norreni. In pochi avrebbero creduto che l’autore della trilogia ‘Völuspá’ potesse arrivare così lontano ma allo stesso tempo è venuto il momento che i Fortíð si prendano quello che spetta loro di diritto.

I Fortíð appartengono al solo Einar "Eldur" Thorberg (Curse, Midnattsvrede, Potentiam, ex Den Saakaldte), artista islandese di nascita ma cittadino norvegese acquisito da tempo, che avevamo avuto modo di incrociare su Aristocrazia nell'ormai lontano 2010, anno di uscita del terzo atto discografico dedicato al poema "Völuspá", "Fall Of The Ages". Il primo capitolo, "Thor's Anger", fu rilasciato nel 2003, mentre il secondo, "The Arrival Of Fenris", nel 2007. Seguì poi la pubblicazioni di altri due album, "Pagan Prophecies" nel 2012 e "9" nel 2015.
Nel 2016 stato è tempo di guardare indietro per il Nostro, con una raccolta ideata e supportata dall'accoppiata di etichette composta da Symbol Of Domination e Black Plague, intitolata "The Demo Sessions". Il materiale è appunto in formato demo, mai finito in circolazione ed è estratto da cinque sessioni differenti: "Heltekinn" e "Framtíð" sono del 2008; "Ad Handan" del 2009; "Pagan Prophecies", "Electric Horizon" e "Sun Turns Black" del 2010; "Nornir", "Galdur" e "Hof" del 2013; "Illt Skal Með Illu Gjalda" e la cover degli Enslaved "Lifandi Lífi Undir Hamri" del 2015. I quasi ottanta minuti offrono la possibilità di farsi un'idea della proposta a grandi linee, sia all'ascoltatore che ha già usufruito del loro black metal vichingo, sia a quello incappatovi per puro caso.
Con il trascorrere degli anni, Thorberg ha conferito una dimensione stabile di vera e propria band ai Fortíð, grazie agli inserimenti di lunga data di Rikard Jonsson al basso (Forcefed Horsehead e Deject), Daniel Theobald dietro le pelli (Curse, Den Saakaldte, Ethereal Forest, The 3rd Attempt ed ex di Pantheon I e Sarkom) e Øystein Hansen alla chitarra (Thornbound). La creatura ha inoltre tratto giovamento da quanto consegnatoci in passato da Grutle Kjellson e Ivar Bjørnson: la cover del brano inserito in "Vikingligr Veldi" (1994), infatti, non è casuale.
Pur presentando diversi livelli di volume e una produzione non proprio ottimale, del resto si tratta sempre di versioni demo, le tracce contenute in scaletta raffigurano la crescita e l'evoluzione del progetto, segnate da un suono che ha fatto della solennità, delle feroci sfuriate in blast beat e dell'attitudine pagano-battagliera la propria ragione di vita, passando per i Borknagar che furono e i sempiterni Bathory in modalità epica.
In definitiva: se i Fortíð fossero già fra le vostre conoscenze e ne possedeste gli album, "The Demo Sessions" chiuderebbe il cerchio in attesa che il sesto lavoro in studio venga sfornato. Viceversa potrebbe divenire un buonissimo punto di partenza per chiunque abbia la curiosità e l'intenzione di avvicinarsi a Einar "Eldur" Thorberg & Co. Qualunque sia il motivo che vi spinga all'ascolto, il mio consiglio rimane uno e solo: fatelo.

Según el sitio Metal Archives, es Islandia la cantidad de bandas de metal (y sus variantes) activas no llegan a 100. Pues bien, Fortid es una de ellas y aquí nos traen su último lanzamiento.
La banda transita los terrenos del black metal de la escuela escandinava, con algunos toques viking, así que ya sabes qué esperar. Son bastante sólidos en lo suyo, es justo decirlo, y como no he escuchado sus anteriores trabajos, deberé remitirme únicamente a estos demos que representan grabaciones entre los años 2008 y 2015, a saber: "Heltekinn" y "Framtid" son de 2008; "Para Handan" de 2009; "Pagan Prophecies", "Electric Horizon" y "Sun Turns black" de 2010; "Nornir", "Galdur" y "Hof" de 2013; mientras que "Illt Skal Med Illu Gjalda" y "Lifandi Lifi Undir Hamri" son de 2015. Obviamente, la calidad en el sonido está lejos de ser primera clase, pero no es esta una condición sine-qua-non para las bandas que abrazan este estilo.
En síntesis, he aquí una buena muestra de la evolución de una banda y la oportunidad de escuchar temas y versiones que no están en los lanzamientos previos de Fortid. Y de mas esta decir, que si te va el black mas trve y old-school este disco es para vos.

Лейбл Symbol Of Domination сотоварищи сделал очень крутую в итоге работу - выпустил 80-минутный диск с демками, которые только мог насобирать ВИА Fortid. Так-то группа хорошо известна среди поклонников черной викинг музыки. Как и своим исландским происхождением (потом перебралась куда? Да, ответ правильный - в Норвегию)) ).
Уж 15 лет формация коптит небо своими вызывающими древне-музыкальными кострами, пять альбомов запустили на радость профильной публике и все время с шумом, грохотом, искрами и настоящим мастерством несли культурное и вечное — вести о древностях земли скандинавской.
И еще одно немаловажное замечание — на диске 5 демок, и они идут как бы погружаясь в прошлое - с 15 года в ноль 8-ой. То есть, здесь же можно будет проследить творческую историю команды, но как бы наоборот, отталкиваясь от дней настоящих, уходя в прошлое. В этом есть своя специфика и ее стоит учитывать.
Настоящий подарок профильным людям. Потому что исландцы хорошо передают душу буйного викингера — разбойника с больших дорог да морей. Не так много прошло времени с эпохи «жестокости норманской» - A furore Normannorum . Гены берут свое. А подарок БОЛЬШОЙ для фэнов оттого, что Fortid мало опирается на штампы и заготовки предшествующих музыкальных банд викинговского нашествия на европейский регион и шире - мир. Между прочим, трак сразу второй - это кавер Enslaved - неслабая арт-метальная сага на 12 минут.
Свои демки группа начинает представлять с мид-темпо (чуть быстрее) компо, структура которой изложена в водопаде ритм-секции и + гитарное покрытие (как толковой плиткой). Два гитариста в группе (на этот исторический период) и они в должной мере оба машут своими топорами, разгоняя печаль нордическую)). Вокалист — да, один, но уже здесь он исполнил на два голоса — истинно викинговский, зажатый, среднего и ниже тембра — боевой такой, каким орут: «вперед, на рубку!» И тут же певец дает чистого вокала, поддержанного смиренной, но вельми аккуратной акустической гитарой. Кста, чуть далее два вокала переплетаются в разговоре, создавая эпичности эффект. А немного просмотря инфу на метал-архивах, врубаемся, что вокалист здесь непростой, ой непростой. Ведь вся группа была создана попервоначалу как его соло-проект. Так что у этого чела не только амбиции, у него мастерство и умение — умение приложить металлический талант в нужном месте.
Нырок в прошлое, и мы слышим, что поранее группа, как и следовало ожидать, работала в более агрессивном ключе, — репрессив-блэк-металл с указанным харш-викинг вокалом. И гитарное строительство здесь не ограничивается экстремальным жужжанием, есть привлеченные соляки, в которых гитареро отрываются, пока дают место и время. По настроению — мрачная и боевая, не без внутренней грусти. В этом демо-куске за 13-й год - три компо. Далее здесь же воспоследовала динамичная экстремальная движуха Galdur. Оснащенная ультра-скоростными мостами ударных, которые, словно боевые мечи блещут издаля, оповещают о начале бойни. Фолка мало здесь, и немало людей порадуется этому обстоятельству (потому что запарили эти викинг-группы, оснащенные стандартным набором начинающего викинга — волынка, гусли и хриплый пропитый вокал). В этой же секции - поначалу медитативная компо Hof, переходящая в по-настоящему драматическую тему, где артистизм вокалиста поднимается на настоящую нордик высоту, структурно эта компо раскрыта северному ветру и, соответственно, меняется с его настроением.
Еще один прыжок в прошлое. 2010. СУРОВЫЙ эпик-блэк-металл с мощным форсированным вокалом. Изукрашенный гитарной лавиной. Три трака.
2009. 1 трак на 10 минут. Цельная история с прологом и эпилогом, штурм-метал для конных атак, более блэковый прикопанный вокал, поддержанный серьезной гитарной разработкой. Есть даже и локальные клавиши...
2008. Два трака, сырых — настоящая демка, которая отдается в рекорд компанию, а не такая, которая идет на продажу. Здесь все жестко и все-таки пристрочены простые мелодии и клавиши припаяны угрюмые. По темпу практически викинг-блак-дум. Не слышали? Послушайте. Крайний трак опять-таки - целая жизнь, с началом и продолжением. Только уж больно мрачно здесь в целом. И вокал удаленный боевой — высокий, под чистый идет, разработка наследия сотен скандинавских музыкальных бойцов. И здесь не вижу заимствований. Только северный шаманизм, психическую атаку и нордическую психоделию. Как очень даже странно, но именно здесь во-второй раз во время прослушивания этого диска я вспомнил о группе ПФ, иначе Pink Floyd. Первый раз я просто побоялся это написать. Ну а здесь не сдержался.
