When it comes to Scandinavian metal, especially black metal, most people automatically think Norway. Although not technically part of Scandinavia, Iceland is starting to produce some good metal bands. Auðn, an atmospheric black metal band is a new band that I discovered while scanning Bandcamp and my life is much better because of it. They seem to remind me of Vinterbris as they are quite good at producing some great atmosphere without the use of keyboards or effects. Their debut self titled album is a blast of melody, aggression, and atmosphere that makes this band one to watch for because I predict big things for them.

The atmosphere of this album sets in immediately with the album opener "Klerkaveldi." Clean eerie sounding guitars set the mood then lead into some heavy riffs. This band doesn't seem to need to rely solely on blast beats because this is a mid paced song with loads of heaviness but also with plenty of melody that provides an eerie atmosphere. The English translation of this band's name is Desolation and that's the atmosphere they are pulling off. The vocals are a black metal rasp that's not too screechy but also add to the atmosphere they are trying to convey. "Sífreri" uses some blast beats and killer tremolo riffs in the beginning but slow it down in the middle with some softer clean guitars that build to some epic riffs to wind up the song. It's that type of atmosphere that makes you actually feel the cold and grimness of this album. Being from a cold and grim place this bands is a perfect representation of what Icelandic metal should be.

"Feigð" is just over five minutes long but shows the bands entire dynamic in this epic song. Clean guitars that display that cold and eerie atmosphere kick this song off as it builds to some blast beats and tremolo riffs while still having those beautiful melodies that gives this song such and epic feel. The middle of the song blasts faster with some awesome tremolo riffs that just add more to the epic atmosphere of this song. As I listen further to this album it is becoming more apparent that, although this may not be a concept album, this is an album that must be listened to in it's entirety rather than focusing on individual songs. This band seems to put all they have into each song making them more like compositions than songs. "Þjáning Heillar þjóðar" is another of those epic numbers that flow with all the beauty and all the aggression of the previous songs but with something extra that I just can't pin point to really go all out for the "goose bump" effect. Once a band gets me to that point, I'm hooked.

The album closes with the title track and they just go balls out epic on this one. Clocking in at close to nine minutes, this song just grabs you from the very star, holding nothing back. This is epic, this is aggressive, and this is absolutely beautiful. The melodic lead guitar that enters the song about a third of the way in is the icing on the cake. This band is capable of adding so many different elements into each song and that, to me, is a sign of great songwriting. My only complaint about this album is it's length. I feel like an album that is this epic should last a bit longer than thirty-six and a half minutes. If you enjoy epic, melodic black metal than this album is essential. It has all the ingredients of a classic. As I said, I am predicting big things for this talented band.

Wenn man das Debut-Album der 2010 in Island gegründeten Band in der Hand hält, sieht man eine graue, düstere Landschaft und das Bandlogo, das darauf prangert. Wer sich jetzt denkt „Okay schon gesehen, gehört, gibt viele davon, brauche ich nicht!“ versäumt ein Hörerlebnis, welches man nicht so oft findet.
Diese Platte ist kalt, atmosphärisch und doch kraftvoll, sodass es mich in seinen Bann zieht. Aber der Reihe nach…

Der erste Song KLERKAVELDI fängt mit einem kleinen Clean-Intro an, welches dann mit verzerrten Gitarren untermalt wird. Man merkt direkt in welche Richtung es gehen soll und auch wird! Beim einsetzen des Gesangs, welcher sehr gut mit der Clean-Gitarre harmoniert, bekommt man das Gefühl, man steht in dieser grauen düsteren Landschaft, welche das Album-Cover ziert. Die Melodien unterstreichen dieses Gefühl und somit ist dieser Song ein guter Einstieg und macht Lust auf mehr!

Mit einem kurzen Einzählen durch das Schlagzeug geht es auch direkt mit UNDIR BLÓĐMÁNÁ weiter, welcher die kalte Stimmung weiterführt. Hialti Sveinssons keifzen und krächzen vervollständigt das Bild, welches die Band hier versucht zu erzeugen. Leider ist dieser Song mit 4.05 Minuten der kürzeste, was jedoch nicht weiter schlimm ist, denn es gibt weitere solche Black-Metal-Diamanten auf dieser Platte.

Der dritte Song SÍFRERI wird eingeleitet mit typischem Black-Metal-Geschrammel, schlägt jedoch nach gut eineinhalb Minuten in eine düstere Ruhe um, die sich gewaschen hat und lässt mich in Gedanken versinken. Solche Clean-Parts gekonnt einsetzen kann nicht jeder. Viele Bands zerstören damit immer wieder die aufgebaute Stimmung. Aber nicht hier! Der ruhige Part wird schnell wieder etwas lauter, trotzdem vernimmt man noch die Melodie, die weitergeführt wird, damit das Zuhören nicht anstrengend wird. Dadurch wird gekonnt auf das nächste Black-Metal-Riff vorbereitet, in dem dann auch wieder der Gesang einsetzt. Für mich ein absoluter Höhepunkt des Albums.

Wer sich bis jetzt sehr wohl fühlt in dieser eisigen Landschaft, kann sich auf den nächsten Track freuen. FEIGĐ fängt ruhig an und geht über in ein, vor Kraft strotzendes Mid-Tempo-Stück, welches auch gerne mal die Nackenmuskulatur in Anspruch nimmt. Im Wechsel mit Blast-Beat-Attacken von Sigurður Kjartan Pálsson führt er diese Kraft gekonnt mit sich, bis er nach knapp fünfeinhalb Minuten endet und man denkt sich „Fuck, was war das gerade?“
LANDVÆTUR ist ein rockiger Black Metal Song, der die eisige Stimmung weiterführt, aber leider auch nicht mehr. Der Song ist leider ein kleiner Schwachpunkt der Platte, vermindert aber keinesfalls die gesamte Qualität.

Somit komm ich gleich zu dem vorletzten Track der Platte: þJÁNING HEILLAR þJÓĐAR kündigt sich als atmosphärisches Meisterwerk an und wird dem auch gerecht! Eine besinnliche Melodie zieht einen wieder direkt in eine Welt voller Dunkelheit und erdrückender Kälte. Meistens ist eine cleane Melodie zu hören, die sich abwechselt mit verzerrten Parts und somit eine Spannung aufbaut, wie ich sie schon lange nicht mehr gehört habe. Diesem Song wird in der Mitte ein wahrhaftiger Höhepunkt verpasst. Die Leadmelodie lässt einen die Augen schließen und einfach nur genießen, auch bei dem folgenden Riff möchten man sie nicht wieder öffnen! Erst als es wieder weitergeht mit Gesang und dem Main-Riff wird man aus seiner Trance geholt. Definitiv das Highlight des Albums.

Der Titelsong AUĐN ist mit gut 9 Minuten der längste und auch leider schon der letzte Track. Viele werden erst einmal zweifeln, ob es die Band schafft, diese Atmosphäre in dieser Länge aufrecht zu erhalten, ohne langweilig zu werden. Ich sage nur: DAS SCHAFFEN SIE!! Und zwar dermaßen gut, dass es gerne auch 15 Minuten oder länger hätte gehen könne.
Ein absolut genialer Schluss von einem pervers geilen Album!

Fazit: Wer es auch gerne mal etwas ruhiger im Black Metal hat, ohne jedoch gleich gelangweilt zu werden ist hier genau richtig!

Ein wahres Kleinod. Sieben Songs mit einer Laufzeit von knapp 37 Minuten. Durch Zufall entdeckt und ohne langes Nachdenken für brilliant befunden. So kurz kann ein Review sein, aber zum ersten Album von Auðn gibt es durchaus noch mehr zu sagen.
Zufällig entdeckte ich die aus Island stammende Black Metal Kapelle Auðn. Wobei. Black Metal trifft es eigentlich nicht ganz, denn atmosphärische, gesanglose Passagen sind zahlreich vorhanden. Diese Elemente machen den Sound des ersten Albums mit dem Titel “Auðn” unverwechselbar und nehmen mich vollkommen ein.
Atmosphäre ist wichtiger als Text

Ich muss zugeben, ich verstehe von den Texten kein einziges Wort. Diese stehen bei den Songs aber auch wahrlich nicht im Vordergrund. Es geht vielmehr darum, Atmosphäre zu schaffen. Und genau dieses Ziel erreichen die fünf Isländer, ohne mit der Wimper zu zucken. Ich habe jedenfalls keine Kapazität mehr für etwas anderes. Diese Scheibe nebenbei zu hören, wäre in meinen Augen eine Schande. Das Albubm ist definitiv etwas zum Genießen.
Ein beschwerlicher Weg

Kaum nimmt die Scheibe an Fahrt auf, schon stehe ich inmitten eines fiesen Schneegestöbers. Mühevoll arbeite mich durch den kniehohen Schnee und suche Schutz. Kein Baum. Weit und breit nur eines: Schnee. Das Eis verklebt mittlerweile mein Wimpern. Ich kann die Hand vor Augen nur noch erahnen. Kurzes Verschnaufen. Inne halten. Kraft sammeln für den nächsten Schritt. Genau das geht mir durch den Kopf, wenn ich den dritten Song „Sífreri“ anspiele.
Einen absoluten Hörgenuss bietet übrigens die vielschichtige Komposition „Feigð“, der vierte Track auf der Scheibe. Dieser zeigt eindrucksvoll, wozu die Isländer in der Lage sind und überzeugen mich spätestens an dieser Stelle vollkommen.

Kopfkino für 37 Minuten

Und mal ganz ehrlich. Musik, die es vermag, solche mächtigen Bilder zu erschaffen. Den Hörer mit auf eine Reise zu nehmen dabei hilft, dem Alltag zu entfliehen. Dann ist es auch egal, dass die Scheibe schon seit Ende November 2014 erhältlich ist. Limitiert auf 500 Stück, ist „Auðn“ eigentlich nur auf Shows der Isländer zu bekommen. Ich hatte aber das Glück, dass mir der Gitarrist eine Kopie hat zukommen lassen.

Und auch Ihr sollt an diesem Glück teilhaben. Schaut einfach auf der Bandcamp-Seite der Jungs nach, denn noch kann man sich die sieben Songs für lau anhören. Sicher freuen die Skandinavier aber auch über den einen oder anderen Euro! Verdient haben Sie es.

Primera larga duración para esta nueva banda Islandesa, en activo desde el 2010 Audn viene a dar cuenta de la buena salud de la escena islandesa de black metal que en las últimas fechas no deja de sorprendernos. Audn se centran en ofrecer un black atmosférico impregnado de soledad, de parajes naturales salvajes y solitarios. A lo largo de los siete temas que conforman el álbum la banda se nos presenta con una madurez inusitada en un terreno que no es sencillo de trabajar y con claras influencias de bandas como Drudkh, perfectamente reflejadas en su propuesta. Logran trasportar al oyente a los gélidos paisajes islandeses gracias a un buen trato con las guitarras, soberbias en todos los planos, melódicas, agresivas y repletas de épicos riffs, la mayoría de las veces evocadores. Buena base rítmica, correcta en la mayoría de los casos pero muy necesaria en los momentos más épicos de este álbum. A las voces todo un acierto, se decanta por un estilo agresivo y rasgado, sin llegar al extremismo en ninguno de los dos casos y si manteniendo casi un plano de narrador de historia, como un intento de conceptualizar el álbum. Realmente estamos ante una grata sorpresa dentro del black atmosférico y una banda con un futuro muy prometedor.

From the anguished beauty of the bittersweet melodies and the dark, atmospheric, aura, to the stellar sound production and the vicious throat-tearing vocal delivery, Auðn’s self-titled debut album is altogether flawless.
Black metal has no right to be this beautiful.

It is also bleakly grim. At times, it is blasting and brutal, yet perfectly balanced and never straying a solitary note away from the mesmerizing ethereal soundscape projected throughout.

The lyrics are bellowed in a harshly rasped croon, echoing olden phrases in the mother tongue, speaking drab tales of blasphemy, desolation and despair. All over a doom-laden soundtrack fully befitting a Kaurismäki drama.

This album is like a major-label effort from a seasoned artist producing blackened high art by the informed decision of some elitist kvlt committee of the dark satanic overlords at the helm of the Norwegian inner circle.

Auðn is a new atmospheric black metal band from Hafnarfjörður of Iceland, a country with many interesting releases lately. The band was formed in 2010 and released its eponymous debut full-length album “Auðn” in the end of November 2014, via the US labels Black Plague Records and Metallic Media. It was the first official release of the band, without any demos before it, thus “Auðn” was my only contact with their music.

From the first moments of the opening track “Klerkaveldi” I was impressed by the quality of their sound. The band is usually labelled as atmospheric black metal, which is a quite generic term to describe their music. They play black metal of a very melodic atmospheric nature, with many influences from the pagan black metal genre and several elements of epic black metal. They have a very balanced sound, with wonderful guitars, equally melodic and heavy, accompanied by very interesting drums. There are no synths in the album, still their orchestrations sound very rich thanks to their quite diverse compositions and the technical multi-layered guitars. The extended use of beautiful acoustic guitars, adds an even more natural color to the overall somber atmosphere of the album. Hjalti Sveinsson’s screaming vocals is for sure the most “extreme” element of Auðn’s music and his passionate aggressive singing fits more that perfectly to the band’s dark melancholic sound. There are totally 7 songs in the album and its duration is a little over 36 minutes. You might think it’s quite short for a full-length, on the other hand the album is really amazing from start to end, without any fillers or boring moments. All of the lyrics are in their native language and you can find them in the CD booklet.

As I have already mentioned, I was surprised by the quality and maturity of Auðn’s debut. The fact that 2 of their members, (Andri – guitars and Hjálmar – bass) have been recently touring the US with Dynfari and Negură Bunget as session members, says a lot. If you are into melodic atmospheric black metal, you better give this band a chance. ”Auðn” is co-released by Black Plague Records and Metallic Media in a limited to 500 copies jewel-case CD edition. It includes a 6-page folded booklet with the beautiful cover artwork by Víðir ‘Mýrmann’ Þrastarson. Recently “Auðn” was re-released by the Greek label Nebular Winter Productions in tape edition, limited to 200 hand-numbered copies on transparent cassettes, with professional label sticker on both sides and 3 panels j-cards. Dass Island im Bereich Black Metal eine Marke für Qualität ist, sollte mittlerweile jeder Person innerhalb der Materie geläufig sein. Auch Auðn aus Hafnarfjörður sind da keine Ausnahme. 2010 gründete sich das Quintett, im November 2014 bannten sie ihren melodischen Black Metal auf eine runde Scheibe. Die vier Jahre merkt man dem Album an: Review einer starken, durchdachten CD.
Das selbstbetitelte Debütalbum - Auðn heißt übrigens Trostlosigkeit – weist sieben Songs auf, rund 37 Minuten Icelandic Black Metal werden geboten. Die kurze Spielzeit soll jedoch, so viel darf schonmal gespoilert werden, das einzige Manko bleiben. Das Coverartwork von Víðir ‘Mýrmann’ Þrastarson fängt die Atmosphäre des Albums gut in Bild ein und gibt einen Hinweis, auf das was kommen wird. Ein ruhiger, langsamer cleaner Gitarrenbeginn schleicht sich zu Beginn von „Klerkaveldi“ in die Boxen, ehe es mit einem tollen Riff groovend und kreischend ins Midtempo zu verfällt. Dieses Tempo wird auch über weite Strecken des Albums beibehalten, Härte ist trotzdem vorhanden, das Augenmerk wird aber deutlich auf die musikalische und nicht auf die brachiale Seite des Black Metals gelegt – Auðn liefern ein äußerst melodisches Album ab, ohne in unsinniges Gedudel zu verfallen. Gerade das wiederauftauchende Riff im Opener zeigt das deutlich: Gitarrenarbeit auf höchstem Niveau, eine Melodie, die im Kopf bleibt und gefällt, gleichzeitig aber Kälte auslöst: Ein kalter Sonnenschein, hell und trotzdem kalt.

Das isländische Quintett ist mit allen musikalischen Wassern gewaschen, seien es kleinere Tempowechsel, der atmosphärisch dichte Konstruktion des Albums – Songwriting wie es sein sollte – und eine starke Arbeit an den Instrumenten. Abgerundet wird das Gesamtbild durch die starken Vocals von Hjalti Sveinsson und die gute Produktion. Machen wir es kurz: Wer auf melodischen und atmosphärischen Black Metal steht, für wen es nicht immer nur volle Kanne drauf sein muss, wer sich auch im Black Metal über tolle Gitarrenarbeit freuen kann, der kommt an Auðns Debütalbum nicht vorbei. Ein kurzweiliges, packendes Album, ein ordentliches Statement zu Beginn der musikalischen Karriere – ich freue mich auf mehr!

Audn are a band from Iceland that plays an atmospheric form of black metal and this is a review of their self titled 2014 album which will be-issued on December 15th as a joint effort between Symbol of Domination Productions, Metallic Media and Black Plague Records.

Acoustic guitar playing starts off the album and after a few seconds the music starts getting more heavy and melodic along with some grim yet high pitched black metal screams and they also mix both the clean and heavy parts together and the solos and leads also use a great amount of melody and also bring in more of a modern atmospheric black metal sound.

Most of the music sticks to either a slow or mid paced musical direction while on some of t he songs the guitar riffing starts bringing in more raw tremolo picking as well as speeding up briefly and bringing in a small amount of blast beats as the album progresses and the clean playing also gives the music a progressive feeling when it is utilized and they also bring in one track that is very long and epic in length and closes the album with a live track.

Audn plays a style of atmospheric black metal that is very modern and guitar driven while also having its raw and grim moments, the production sounds very raw yet heavy at the same time while the lyrics are written in Icelandic and cover nature themes.

In my opinion Audn are a very great sounding atmospheric black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this re-issue. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Undir Blodmana" "Landvaettur" and "Audn".

Audn - Audn (Metallic Media & Black Plague Records 2015). Audn aus Island haben bereits letztes Jahr ihr erstes Album“Audn“ über Metallic Media veröffentlicht und nun knapp ein Jahr später erscheint es nun abermals durch die Kooperation von Metalic Media und Black Plague Records. Das Album bietet neben den 7 regulären Tracks noch eine Liveversion des Stückes „Sifreri“ wodurch die Spielzeit auf knapp 40 Minuten anwächst. Audn spielen atmosphärischen BM, der oftmals an Bands wie Isvind erinnert.

Die Isländer gelten nicht umsonst als Geheimtipp in der Black Metal Szene, denn schon zu Beginn des Albums zeigen sie wie intensiv aber dennoch melodisch Black Metal klingen kann. Positiv fällt zu allererst die dichte und kraftvolle Produktion des Albums auf. Alle Instrumente wirken im Zusammenspiel sehr gut durchdacht und gut arrangiert. Ein druckvolles Schlagzeug und die wunderschönen Gitarrenriffs erzeugen eine sehr atmosphärische und melodische Stimmung. Überhaupt wirken die Isländer sehr verspielt und couragiert und zeigen dies, in ihren Songs immer wieder. Die Verspieltheit zeigt sich dabei besonders im Titelsong „Audn“, der mit zu den stärksten Songs der Veröffentlichung zählt. Es ist aber eigentlich falsch überhaupt einen Song hervorzuheben, denn das ganze Album überzeugt durch seine intensive Atmosphäre. Positiv zum Gesamtbild trägt auch der Gesang bei, welcher zwar leider in der Muttersprache verfasst ist, aber trotzdem genretypisch klingt ohne negativ aufzufallen. Audn haben ein sehr eigenständiges Werk mit“ Audn“ geschaffen, welches es eine Wiederveröffentlichung verdient hat.

Fazit: Die Isländer haben eine wirklich beeindruckende Leistung mit ihrem Debütalbum abgeliefert. Audn ist ein sehr atmosphärisches und melodisches Album und weißt keine wirklichen Schwachpunkte auf. Eine Kaufempfehlung ist von meiner Seite an alle auszusprechen, welche atmosphärischen BM ohne den Einsatz von elektronischen Hilfsmitteln wie Keyboards in ihr Herz geschlossen haben.

“I mean, if you’re on the fringe of the black metal scene in Iceland, what does that leave you with?” said vocalist Hjalti in this cool piece on Icelandic black metal (grapevine.is). It describes well the position of this atmospheric band, who are on the fringe of a fringe genre in a fringe nation. The band is one of those who get lumped into the post black corner here and there, which is a bit hard to explain. Maybe its the interest in landscapes and not showing band pictures that makes them unique?

Bleak and barren are the landscapes that the band paints in their music, with melancholic and merciless music that cuts you like a knife. Their soaring guitar work combined with meandering rhythms forms imagery in sound, though the band also manages to sound brutal and fiery now and then. Then there are the mild passages, with gentle guitar play. They are brief, but offer a glimpse at the beauty that the band also embodies. Though harsh, the bittersweet melancholy of the songs is convincing and easy to pick up. Even though the lyrics, presented in a hoarse but controlled bark, are in Icelandic this band speaks to you in all their glory. Outsider art is the best art, am I right?

Debiutancki album grupy zatytułowany po prostu „Auðn” miał swoją premierę w listopadzie 2014 roku. Płyta ukazała się w limitowanym nakładzie 500 kopii za pośrednictwem Metallic Media i Clack Plague Records.

Zespół nagrywał swój krążek samodzielnie. Natomiast miksowanie i mastering muzycy powierzyli w ręce Haukur’a Hannes’a. Ciekawą oprawę graficzną albumu zaprojektował Víðir ‚Mýrmann’ Þrastarson. Pierwszy kontakt wzrokowy z okładką znakomicie nastraja i wprowadza w klimat muzyki. Zaś pomysłodawcą loga zespołu jest Helgi Thor Jóhannsson.

Zespół Auðn w swojej twórczości koncentruje się w dużej mierze wokół atmosferycznych i melodyjnych elementów black metalu. Doszukać się tutaj można inspiracji dokonaniami takich grup jak m.in. Drudkh, Agalloch, Immortal, Primordial, Astrofaes, Bathory.

Klimatyczny post-black metal w ich wykonaniu oparty jest na niepowtarzalnym growlu Hjalti (w języku islandzkim), gitarowych riffach (pojawiają się akustyczne wstawki) i dających podkład partiach basu i perkusji. Nie ma tutaj żadnych „nowinek” typu klawiszowe pasaże, orkiestrowe aranżacje lub innych ukłonów w kierunku komercji. Chłopaki grają swoje i robią to arcy ciekawie. Co ważniejsze miejscami surowe dźwięki, układające się tutaj w melodyjną i spójną całość. Warstwie instrumentalnej zarzucić coś nie sposób, o wokalach rozpisywać się można w samych superlatywach. Widoczne jest duże zaangażowanie muzyków.

Płyta „Auðn” to krążek z charakterem, potężną dozą emocji i klimatem. Styl zespołu jest nastrojowy, nostalgiczny. W muzyce dominuje chłód i uczucie nienasyconej pustki pogłębiające wrażenie czerpania inspiracji z otaczającej natury. Muzycy umiejętnie rozwijają swoje pomysły balansują od wściekłych dźwięków do momentów nieco bardziej stonowanych i przestrzennych. Trzeba też przyznać, że „Islandzki growl” odpowiednio podkreśla tajemniczy i „ciemny” klimat tej muzyki.

Auðn przygotował bardzo dobry materiał osadzony w mroźnych klimatach Północy. Niewielu potrafi tak zaczarować na polu post-black metalowym.

Życzę wszystkim Synom Północnej Ciemności obdarzonym islandzkimi korzeniami, aby udało się ich „mrocznej muzyce” niczym wodom z topniejącego lodowca rozlać się po całym świecie.

With its beautiful scenery and harsh winters there really is something special about music that comes out of Iceland. The country has come a long way when it comes to the metal scene, and Auðn have managed to portray the cold atmosphere of their home in their sweeping release “Auðn”. I am a big fan of the Icelandic metal scene and I have rarely been disappointed with anything that comes out of that amazing place. This album is rich with all the familiarities of Black Metal but the atmospheric and melodic elements really adds something special. Now unfortunately I do not speak Icelandic and this is not the first time I have longed for that ability, but do not get me wrong this does not take away from the release. Each song is melodic, powerful, and bleak.

The opening track “Klerkaveldi” starts everything off with a slow tempo melody then unleashes into pure atmospheric goodness. The next two tracks “Undir Blóðmána” and “Sífreri” keeps the pace going and I find myself lost in the riffs. One of my favorite tracks has to be “Landvættur” and according to the translation it means “Spirit of the Land” and there is no doubt that this track encompasses just that. The noteworthy growls mingled with the mournful guitar do a great job in transporting the listener to another place. There is a lot of talent here and I recommend any fan of the genre to check these guys out.

Dalla fertilissima Islanda arriva questo gran disco di black metal, fatto con Bathory nel cuore e nel suono.

Incastonati nella tradizione scandinava gli Auðn fanno un black metal con un respiro ampissimo, atmosferico e davvero ben fatto. Bathory ha mostrato a molta gente le luce e la maniera di fare musica estrema legandosi alle proprie tradizioni, e questo senza essere necessariamente scandinavi.

Il disco originale era uscito nel 2014, ed era doveroso ristampare questo disco per una maggiore diffusione che merita ampiamente. I suoni degli Auðn sono suoni tipicamente scandinavi, con un tocco particolare come tutte le cose fatte dagli islandesi. Non è una musica innovativa od originale, ma è un qualcosa fatto molto bene, con ottima composizione e produzione. Auðn è la continuazione di un qualcosa che si è risvegliato con il black metal, ma questo qualcosa era lì latente e presente, come uno degli antichi di Lovecraft. Questo suono in realtà è amore per la propria terra, le proprie tradizioni e per qualcosa che è oscuramente dentro di noi.

H Ισλανδία έχει αρχίσει και αποκτά αργά αλλά σταθερά τη δική της δυναμική στο χώρο του black metal. Δε γνωρίζω αν είναι σύμπτωση αλλά τα περισσότερα συγκροτήματα από τη μικρή αυτή χώρα έχουν μια ιδιαίτερη αίσθηση της μελωδίας, κυριαρχεί στον ήχο τους η ατμόσφαιρα.

Εξαίρεση δεν αποτελούν ούτε οι Auðn. Το συγκρότημα που κυκλοφόρησε το ντεμπούτο του το 2004, βλέπει τη μοναδική έως και σήμερα δουλειά του να επανακυκλοφορεί από την εταιρεία Symbol Of Domination, αποτέλεσμα της αυξημένης ζήτησης που παρουσίασε η πρώτη έκδοση.

Οι Ισλανδοί μας προσφέρουν ατμοσφαιρικό black metal, κατά κύριο λόγο mid tempo, με αρκετά ξεσπάσματα και πολλές μελωδίες που τις δημιουργούν χωρίς χρήση πλήκτρων και άλλων εφέ. 7 τραγούδια (κι ένα live bonus track) που ταξιδεύουν τον ακροατή στα μαγευτικά μέρη της πατρίδας τους.

Η παραγωγή είναι αρκετά καλή και αναδεικνύει τα δυνατά τους σημεία, γεγονός που κάνει την ακρόαση του δίσκου ακόμα πιο ευχάριστη. Αν σας αρέσει το ατμοσφαιρικό, αργό black metal, στα όρια του depressive, τότε οι Auðn είναι μια άριστη πρόταση για εσάς. Κι αν η πρώτη τους κυκλοφορία είναι τόσο καλή τότε απομένει να δούμε ποιό θα είναι το επόμενο βήμα τους…

When thinking of black metal, Scandinavian countries such as Norway are guaranteed to be mentioned. However one country that is usually overlooked is Iceland. Iceland is a country filled with black metal bands and metal bands in general such as (for example) Curse, Aten and of course Auđn. Auđn are an atmospheric black metal band who do not use keyboards in their music to create the atmospheric sound, but are able to use their guitars to do so, and this album is a perfect example.

The album itself is filled with dark and expressive melodies which are atmospheric yet heavy, a tone created with the drums. The vocals also add to the dark feel as they are raw sounding and powerful and yet fit within the melodies. A shining (yet dark) example is the first track “Klerkaveldi” which is a perfect example of heavy music meeting more of an atmospheric sound. The track also contains a lot of instrumentals (another theme that runs throughout the album) that are beautifully written an add to the mixed and appealing sound of the album.

The third track on the album, “Sífreri”, follows many of the themes that run throughout the whole work, but this track stands out for me for its fast guitar riffs and hard-hitting drums which give way to one hell of a catchy melody. The vocals here are still dark and heavy sounding which adds an evil counterpoint to the melodies in a beautifully executed way. The track has many guitar solos that are softer which, again add a more gentle atmosphere to the track. With the addition of dark and heavy drums, the energy from this powers the track through.

Leading on from “Sífreri” the rest of the album is filled with different melodies, some dark and others not as dark mixed with heavy drumming to create catchy yet explosive music. The vocals carry on through the album being harsh and and catchy, again bringing the darkness out of the album. “Þjáning Heillar Þjóðar”, the sixth track on the album, is a brilliant example of a song that is explosive and catchy. A track where soft melodies are repeated throughout to really bring the atmospheric overtone out, but with the involvement of the faster, heavier and darker riffs, just make this a masterpiece of a song on the album.

The album is written in such a way that it becomes both unique, catchy and dark – an amazing piece of art. To end it all, the bonus track on the album is a live recording of “Sífreri” recorded at Eistnaflug festival back in 2015. A brilliant recording of the song and a perfect end to a perfect album.

Crushing Northern Black Metal with chainsaw-style guitar riffs, blast beats and all those really fancy stuff that each black metal album has in it. Personally I found this quite boring, as I could name like hundreds of records with the same exact sounds, however, assumed that Auðn’s first opus has been well accepted by the audience I presume this might be very good for someone.

That being said, the latest 2 tracks are the best this record can offer (more atmospheric, variegated and interesting as well).

I have to admit that my knowledge of Icelandic Metal bands is fairly limited and with this in mind it’s fair to say that I can at least avoid comparing Auðn to a host of other native Black Metal bands.

Despite the Icelandic language barrier providing limitations in truly understanding the lyrical subject matter of the album, there is no problem understanding the sentiment delivered in the performance.

Musically, purists will be treated to a standard bass, guitar, drums and vocal line-up without the addition of keys, synths and over-emphasis on reverb effects to produce atmosphere within their material. Whilst I won’t deny that I enjoy the layering of high-quality synth pads and leads, or an orchestra if the budget allows, I do admire any band, Auðn included, who can produce a dark, ominous mood without the need for all the bells and whistles and I much prefer the core instrument approach than a band spoiling their sound by using cheap, outdated keyboard sounds.

The majority of the album leans more towards a mid-tempo pace than relentless blistering, visceral shrills and screams. This choice of a slower-than-expected pace allows the songs some creative breathing room, resulting in a more mature, less in-your-face approach and methodically crafted structure, whilst not abandoning its core black metal sound.

The mellow interludes part way through the songs are very enjoyable and allow a break from the clattering drums and simplistic tremolo guitar, making way for a demonstration of wonderfully intricate guitar work.

The choice of including of a live bonus track to round off the album is a welcome one. The recording is of a high standard and captures the natural acoustics of the live environment extremely well. I found myself closing my eyes and imagining myself watching them at a small well-renowned venue like Camden Underworld, as it has that same acoustic vibe to it.

Whilst the material is technically proficient, it’s not exactly fresh or groundbreaking. The mix is well-balanced and professionally produced without losing the visceral, raw edge that Black Metal is synonymous for.

In essence, Auðn’s self-titled album delivers honest, high-quality and well-crafted Black Metal without any of the theatrics and pretence. If you’re a fan of the genre and your preferences lean towards a pure sound, this will be a worthy addition to your collection, but if you’re looking for something that explores new ideas, this probably isn’t the album for you.

Iceland's old school atmospheric black metal purveyors Audn play some of the most atmospherically chilling and grim black metal, which reminds of snow capped mountains where bloody Viking battles were fought long ago.

The songs on this 40-minute record have such an awesome grandiose vibe to them, you feel as if you’re a part of their triumphant struggles within this sinister and dark world of ours.

The guitars on this self-titled debut CD are packed with melodic and dreadful-sounding riffs and rhythms, which just send cold shivers down your back. It’s this cold feeling of raging hatred and emptiness that just sucks the listener into Audn’s world of darkness and loneliness.

Moreover, there is plenty of diversity within their song structures, from mid-paced drumming to fast paced onslaughts of blackened shards of misery and tear-laden victory. The band is very tight in all aspects of their musicianship, which brings the sonic assault to your helpless ears and makes them pay the ultimate price of fear and total isolation. You not only hear all of the elements of complete darkness and cold spells, you physically get to experience these beautifully, grotesque vibrations. The black metal music presented by Audn is nothing out of the ordinary, but it is skillfully executed with tons of precision to invoke all of the spirits of the fallen dead from past ancient battles, with great magnitude and force.

My only complaint here, none of their lyrics are written or sung in English, but hey, if you know the Icelandic language you’ll be in great shape, but if not, the bone chilling music more than makes up for this aspect. This is album is a very good listen. Do not pass this one up…

Nach ein paar Hördurchgängen entpuppt sich der Opener "Klerkaveldi" sogar als ziemlich eingängig.

Das gilt auch für "Landvættur" und dem Titeltrack "Auðn". Die emotionsvollen Gitarrenriffs, das treibende, punktgenaue Schlagzeug und der genial Gesang - alles scheint zu stimmen. Die Stärken AUDNs liegen vor allem in den schönen Gitarrenlinien, der abwechslungsreichen Atmosphäre und der superben Gesangsleistung. Die Riffs, wie in "Sífreri", könnten den Seelenszustand eines Wahnsinnigen beschreiben, cleane Melodic Parts, wie etwa in "Feigð" oder "Þjáning Heillar Þjóðar", entführen in albträumerische Lethargie. Je häufiger man sich "Auðn" von AUDN anhört, desto mehr geht sie einem ins Blut über. Die Platte ist gut abgemischt, die Gitarren sind knackig und die Drums fett.

Was ich sehr schön finde ist der Wechsel zwischen den melodischen Midtempo Parts und den, teilweise ebenso melodischen, Uptempo Abschnitten, die sich nicht gegenseitig im Weg stehen, sondern prima miteinander harmonieren.

Este es uno de esos discos que te dejan deseando más. Grabado y lanzado originalmente en el año 2014 (ya cuenta con ediciones hechas por Nebular Winter Productions en cassette y Hexencave Productions en vinilo), el único trabajo grabado por estos islandeses hasta la fecha es una exquisita pieza de Black Metal atmosférico de primer nivel. Lejos de la oscuridad aplastante de gemas como Wormlust o Svartidauði, pero teniendo en su bagaje musical la misma frialdad y ese viento transformado en sonido que caracteriza a las bandas de ese país, este excitante combo promete y mucho. Grabar un disco debut tan sublime como éste y dejar al oyente deseoso de más, no es algo que esté al alcance de todas las bandas.

Como ya dije, tienen el aura islandesa sobre sus cabezas y eso les ayuda a obtener un sonido típico y sumamente envolvente. Sin embargo, en lo estrictamente compositivo, los encuentro más cerca de los geniales Mgla antes que de Wormlust, por dar un nombre puntual de la escena islandesa. La sofisticación, la emoción, el poder que se desprende tanto del sonido como de la ejecución de las canciones, como así también de las canciones mismas, hacen que esta banda deba ser tomada con mucha seriedad y respeto, además de despertar admiración en éste servidor.

De entrada dejan en claro por dónde van a ir, de qué manera nos van a cautivar con esos paisajes gélidos pero preciosos que dibujan con las texturas sonoras elegidas para dar forma a la obra en cuestión. Así, entre los deliciosos 7 tracks que conforman la placa (7 más un octavo tema en vivo, versión de "Sifreri", el track número 3, en vivo, como ya dije), logramos encontrar bellezas como "Feigð", "Þjáning heillar þjóðar" y la ya mencionada "Sifreri", piezas que incitan al oyente a viajar mentalmente al mismo paraje frío y gigantesco que vemos en la portada del disco, envolviendo al oyente con esa capacidad innata para generar y usar las atmósferas como si éstas fueran un instrumento más, a la par de las guitarras, el bajo y la batería (sin olvidarme del muy buen trabajo vocal realizado por Hjalti Sveinsson.

Islandia es hoy el país que mejor Black Metal exporta al mundo. Lo que en algún momento fue Noruega, lo es hoy Islandia. Sobran bandas para corroborar la veracidad de mis palabras, y Auðn es uno de los nombres rutilantes que me eximen de hacer mayores comentarios. Exquisito.

La scena musicale islandese ha un certo fascino: parliamo di una nazione isolata dal resto dell'Europa e con una popolazione tra le più basse dell'intero continente, eppure in grado di offrire artisti di alta qualità. Lo dimostrano l'avanguardia di Björk, il Pop raffinato di Sóley, il Post-Rock di Sigur Rós e Múm e — per avvicinarci a territori a noi più conosciuti — la lunga carriera dei Sólstafir. Oggi ci addentreremo proprio nel lato più estremo di questo Paese, più precisamente nel Black Metal.

Tralasciando per un momento la band sopra citata, qualcuno di voi potrebbe aver già incrociato realtà connazionali a questa e appartenenti allo stesso genere, ed effettivamente io stesso ho scoperto di recente che il panorama nero islandese ha molto da offrire. Gli Auðn sono un nome giovane che ha debuttato nel 2014 con un disco eponimo, ristampato poi negli anni successivi da varie etichette, che già evidenziava le idee molto chiare dei musicisti.

Il Black Metal del quintetto è trainato principalmente dalle due chitarre, in grado di rendersi sempre interessanti grazie a riff melodici e orecchiabili, talvolta spogliandosi delle distorsioni in favore di suoni puliti, allo scopo di donare ai brani un tocco atmosferico; le sensazioni espresse dalle sei corde sono riportate proprio nel nome della band: pura e fredda «desolazione», pienamente rappresentata dalle note fredde e taglienti che ricoprono l'intero album, le quali regalano momenti stellari specialmente quando si lasciano andare in assoli pregni di emozioni. Il cantato in lingua madre, nella forma di uno scream non troppo acuto, non fa che enfatizzare questo aspetto con una prestazione perfettamente adatta al contesto, discretamente intensa e capace di trasmettere quanto appena descritto, raggiungendo il picco in "Þjáning Heillar Þjóðar".

Dal lato delle ritmiche, il disco risulta capace di spaziare tra numerosi blast beat, altrettanti tempi medi e qualche rallentamento qua e là, dimostrando quindi la buona varietà dei musicisti, a proprio agio in ogni situazione; il batterista offre infatti pattern dinamici che trovano un degno compagno nel basso, posto abbastanza in evidenza nel sound complessivo e pertanto con varie opportunità spesso sfruttate di far sentire il proprio contributo, senza limitarsi a seguire le chitarre, come potrete notare fin da "Klerkaveldi", soprattutto nella traccia conclusiva. Notevole infine anche il lavoro in sede di produzione, pulito senza eccedere e adatto a dare risalto ai vari elementi in gioco.

"Auðn" è un album di tutto rispetto, la cui durata scarsa permette addirittura più ascolti ripetuti senza che la noia possa anche solo avvicinarsi; d'altro canto, con le indiscutibili capacità della band è un peccato essersi limitati a meno di quaranta minuti. A maggior ragione dato che un'etichetta come la Season Of Mist ha aperto le proprie porte agli Islandesi, non possiamo fare altro che sperare negli sviluppi futuri; per ora ci limitiamo ad apprezzare ampiamente quanto prodotto.

The is the debut album of this atmospheric Black Metal band from Iceland... a small place almost isolated from others, but the world is surprising in many stages... and music is one of them. For such a small population compared to other places, they surely do have a lot of Metal acts, and I must say that what I have heard are mostly quality ones. This band is no exception, they have a very atmospheric style of Black Metal, perfectly captured with a great production, and I can hear some old school Doom Metal influence, this is more up-tempo, has some sort of dramatic vibe. Although some will claim they have some sort of Post Rock influence in their music, and that might be true, but I will also say they have a good ear for infusing some slight Prog Rock influences, even some classical influenced arrangements, and a very heavy and emotional guitar sound. I was expecting some clean singing to occur at anytime, but not for now. And believe me, if in future works they use it, it will not be out of place. If there is one band I am thinking of that has the same effect it will be to the debut album from OPETH, and although there might be some differences, a slight flavor of the same quality remains in a similar way with both bands. Great album and also a great future ahead.

Siempre me ha gustado buscar bandas nuevas, con estilos propios aunque poca fama, y así me he topado con geniales propuestas de casi todo el mundo. Pero realmente, no fue sino hasta ahora, que tengo el gusto de conocer una banda de Islandia, como en este caso, Auðn. Aun cuando el sitio Metal Archives informa que actualmente hay 73 bandas activas en dicho país, sinceramente no tenía ni la más remota idea de que en Islandia hubiera metal y mucho menos podría haber imaginado que existiera una banda tan interesante como ésta.

La propuesta de Auðn no es novedosa, es black metal melódico y casi progresivo, que incluso podría calificar hasta cierto punto de folk, pues tiene algunas cosas que remiten a heladas tierras y sombríos bosques nórdicos.

Como dije, el disco es interesante por la amalgama de estilos, pero puede llegar a tornarse algo monótono para el oyente en busca de versatilidad, pero también es cierto que si bien mezclan los estilos antes mencionados, hay una marca de identidad en el género que está presente a lo largo de todo el álbum.

En general, el disco me parece bastante fresco y original, y eso definitivamente es un punto a favor de estos gélidos metaleros islandeses.

Исландские блэк группы уже достаточно известны в андеграунде, и, к слову, зарекомендовали себя с хорошей стороны. Хотя, если говорить о блэке, то это может быть парадоксом)). Да и в подсознании как-то отложилось - все что движется к северам, то блэку должно соответствовать реально. Сабжевая формация, кстати, сама себя так и называет - исландик блак металл. А другие добавляют тэг #атмосферик. Что за этим может скрываться, (ведь каждый раз разное)) - тут и проверим.

Диск воспоследовал по стальным нервам Почты России и дошел до меня точно и уверенно. Отправляла его контора Сатанат рекордс, а указанная выше SOD это ее сублейбл. В ситуацию с реализацией компакта вмешались два штатовских лейбла Metallic Media & Black Plague Records. Просвещенные камрады знают эти лейбаки, как приверженцев всего самого черного, одержимого и, так сказать, перпендикулярного общественному мнению. Так что, думаю, все будет в полном поряде.

Заметим, что группу составляют пять человек = классическая схема. И трое из них уже кое-где поиграли. Компакт-диск этот - дебют для Audn, но это никак не сказывается на концертном графике ансамбля, сейчас именно на фб анонсированы 9 концертов по Европе. Ребята реально валят тяжмет и презентуют свои творения публике на фестах, сборных концертах и проч. И есть интерес — однозначно. Я уже, например, слушаю диск и начинаю понимать от чего. Команда несет жесткий вариант металла мид-темпо и быстрее, слегонца напоминающего по настроению языческие бригады с северов. Потому что какая-то корпускула национального, викингерского ) здесь незримо присутствует. Это прекрасно, конечно, но не стоит думать, что это фолк блак, или викинг блак, национальная здесь только одна из граней общего стакана. Но это очень скандинавский релиз. Так что, кто западает на эту тему, то сразу сюда, брать компакт.

В данном музыкальном курсе для группы очень важно иметь свои подходы, свою реализацию, свои личные фишечки. И Audn их имеет - настолько чтобы с кайфом для себя и слушателей исполнять свои железные саги. А что же с атмо? А вот что... сначала я вообще подумал, что критики обозвали атмосферностью то самое нордическое настроение, вот так. Но в траке три интро было прочувственное, светлое, прокаленное стылым ветром исландских фиордов )). И вот тут я понял посыл того тэга. Не более того. И дальше повалил тот же суровый, буранный скандинавский блак — который я лично называю иногда репрессивным, в отличие от депрессивного. Ибо архитектура в компо вроде одинакова, только в репрессивном зубья действующих пил гораздо крупнее, и работают более не на чуткую распиловку материала, а на шокирующий разрыв волокон. Репрессивно. Кстати, в том же траке три есть еще один фрагмент, отмеченный атмосферой жути и агонии (и далее отработка по тэгу #атмо продолжится — дозировано и достойно). Так что, скучно не будет.

И вообще, композер команды по мере сил старается как-то вибрировать и заставляет вибрировать своих соратников, дабы вдохновить тех на сольные оргии. Удается, скрывать не будем. В жестоком нордик репрессив блаке организуются ледяные окна, где показывают свое мастерство музыканты Audn, то морозной отработкой на струнных, то хаотическим метанием ритм-секции, то дичайшим вокалированием.

В данную музыкальную лакуну нужен и соответствующий монструозный вокалист. И он есть — именно адовый, злой аки берсерк персонаж, который реально перепахивает пространство своим низким скримо-харшем. Его голос будто бы подымается с ледоставом из глубины течения, приподымает тяжеленные замерзшие глыбы, а потом и рушит их средне- и высокочастотным сигналом. И тут за ним встают визжащие гитары... и пошел ледокол...

Кстати, за серединой компакта начинаются настоящие атмосферные эпики, чуть ли не балладного (или типа саги) свойства. Но все равно в итоге оказывается, что они составлены из жгучего и мощного гитарного бурелома.

Auðn przygotował bardzo dobry materiał osadzony w mroźnych klimatach Północy. Niewielu potrafi tak zaczarować na polu post-black metalowym.

Życzę wszystkim Synom Północnej Ciemności obdarzonym islandzkimi korzeniami, aby udało się ich „mrocznej muzyce” niczym wodom z topniejącego lodowca rozlać się po całym świecie.
