Iscarioth, met een 'h' op het einde, komt uit Rusland en bestaat nog niet zo lang. Er is niet heel veel over te vinden, maar wel een beetje natuurlijk en die informatie zegt ons dat dit hun eerste langspeler is, wat ook meteen hun eerste release is. Onder de noemer experimental blackmetal gaat het schuil, althans volgens de band zelf, echter zou ik het niet zo willen omschrijven.

Zo experimenteel is het namelijk niet. Blackmetal, met ingrediënten die we al lang gehoord hebben, bakken de mannen van Iscarioth. Ze bakken het echter wel goed en de muziek is dan ook niet je standaard blackmetalschijfje dat je elke maand koopt. Symfonische stukken maken deel uit van de songs en de stem is ook wat anders. De cleane zang is niet altijd wat, maar geeft het wel weer een wat eigen smoelwerk mee. De muzikanten zijn verder goed en beheersen hun instrumenten prima. De muziek is niet snel als een Dark Funeral, maar vooral dynamisch en heeft wel degelijk snelheid, maar met vlagen komt dit voor. De band moet het hebben van melodieën en sfeer en een toch wat meer theatrale hand die ook aan de arm van een Dimmu Borgir en Cradle of Filth zitten. Luistertips zijn Mountain Echo, I am the Arm en The Domain of Seven Queens.

Afgezien van de rare titel van het album en het Russische accent, wat soms lachwekkend is en wat knullig overkomt, is het een gave plaat geworden met veel dynamiek. Ik ben verder positief over deze schijf en ben erg benieuwd wat ze in de toekomst gaan brengen. Het potentieel is er en deze goede schijf ook.

'Experimental black metal', a term that evokes so many questions. Is it going to be a blackened version of free jazz? Is it going to be fifty minutes of harsh noise? Well, in this case, it nudges fiercely towards old school melodic death metal. This album seems to come directly from the time when the line between death and black metal was still a blur. Back then, there's was 'metal', like in 'thrash' or 'speed' and there was 'extreme metal', as if the genre wasn't extreme enough already for the worried moms and dads.

Iscarioth hails from Klin, a village in the Moscow region (Russia). This trio has been working on their distinct sound of extreme metal since 2012. I'm not surprised that this act has been picked up by Symbol Of Domination Productions. This label seems to have a flair for original, out-of-the-ordinary music. They have surprised me in a good way in the past few months and with this album it's no different. 'I Am The Arm' is a great album with surprising hooks and brilliant riffs.

The album opens with an atmospheric piece of music, an intro so to speak. Immediately thereafter, Iscariot blast their massive sound through my speakers at high velocity. In 'Mountain Echo' I can hear a blend of old school extreme metal and so called black 'n' roll. In fact, that blend is present throughout the entire album, reaching an early highlight in title track 'I Am The Arm'. This is a ferocious headbanger, reminding me a bit of Samael but without the electronic aspect.

That's why I hesitate to label this music as 'black metal'. Besides Samael, bands like Moonspell, Tiamat and even Arch Enemy often come to mind. Acoustic guitars are being used in several songs, along with keyboards, creating elaborate atmospheric passages. That obviously doesn't make this album 'soft', on the contrary. For the majority of time, and especially in 'Voices Of The Twilight Forest' Iscarioth fiercely rocks. Besides, I can't help but feeling that these guys also like to listen to bands like Sisters Of Mercy or Fields Of The Nephilim.

'Jūros Šventė' is a breather, and a pretty good one too, driving on plucking guitars and with a narrating voice. Shortly thereafter, Iscarioth continues the melodic and quite technical metal assault. 'The Domain Of Seven Queens' is the strangest songs on this surprising and refreshing album. On one hand it's a great atmospheric metal song but on the other side it reminds me a bit of the blackjazz movement that seems to be going on these days.

I really think this is a band to keep an eye on. Their music brings a daring but highly enjoyable approach to all things blackened and certainly a lot of variation. If you are a dark metal fan who isn't afraid to go into extremes once in a while, you should check this out. I am already curious about the future of this band, since I feel that their best work is yet to come. Given time and effort, Iscarioth could come up with a dark metal masterpiece in a few years. 'I Am The Arm' is an excellent herald for that one.

Блэк-металлический коллектив из города Клин со звучным названием Iscarioth ведёт свою историю с 2001 года, но после многочисленных изменений в составе был вновь мобилизован в 2012 году н.э. для того, чтобы приняться за активное музыкальное наступление и покорение металлической общественности. В итоге в начале нынешнего года был выпущен дебютный лонгплей коллектива с интригующим названием “I am The Arm” (“Я — Рука”).

Если это блэк, то блэк в духе Ancient Ceremony, Siebenburgen, Darzamat, Invocator, Sadist, Atheist и Cynic, то есть музыка со значительным влиянием техно-дэта и техно-трэша. Даже звучание названия команды напоминает четыре из упомянутых выше коллективов и, к слову сказать, совершенно не напоминает Акхенатена и его ницшеанствующий Judas Iscariot.

А наш с вами Iscarioth исполняет яростный, техничный и атмосферный материал, который своей изощрённо сконструированной злобой вызывает в сознании золотые времена швейцарских экстремальщиков из Messiah, а вокал тут ни разу не скрим, а нечто такое, как если бы Келли Шейфер из Atheist вдруг стал петь чуть мягче, но с не меньшим чувством и накалом.

Судя по всему, в основе альбома лежит интересная концепция, суть которой выражена так же с помощью картины, написанной маслом и представленной на обложке, но по непонятным причинам тексты в буклете отсутствуют, а по сему об их содержании остаётся только догадываться. У альбома есть недостатки, но они настолько незначительны на фоне очевидных и великолепных достоинств, а в целом материал воспринимается настолько живо и интересно, что у меня просто нет другого выхода, кроме как поставить этой пластинке высший балл и с нетерпением ждать новую работу прогрессивных искариотов, которая, как сообщается, уже не за горами.

Iscarioth are a band from Russia that plays an experimental mixture of black and death metal and this is a review of their 2015 album "I Am the Arm" which was released as a joint effort between Satanath Records and Vacula Productions.

A choir starts off the album along with some elements of classical music and after the intro the music goes into more of a blackened death metal direction along with growling vocals and when the music speeds up a great amount of blast beats are utilized and synths can also be heard in some parts of the songs.

Melodies are brought into some of the riffing and the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them and after awhile clean playing and spoken words can be heard in certain sections of the recording and some tracks of black'n'roll and as the album progresses acoustic guitars along with spoken word parts can be heard briefly.

Iscarioth plays a musical style that takes black and death metal and mixes it with avant garde and experimental music to create an original style, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover dark and philosophical themes.

In my opinion Iscarioth are a very great sounding experimental mixture of black and death metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. Iscarioth, who hail from Russia, play a wickedly punishing blend of experimental black metal with hints of death metal.

“I am The Arm” at times, reminds of the black/death metal band Aeternus, but with the atmospheric influences of early Enslaved and Samael. This quartet’s style is hellishly heavy with tons of atmosphere and ungod-like vocals that’ll surely set the listener’s ears on fire, yeah!! “The Sail Of Mental Sea” has more of experimental and atmospheric synthesizer passages with a distorted wall of sound coming at you like a freight train out of total control. It’s pretty interesting to hear, how well these guys blend the tripped out experimental synth and soundbytes within their interesting style of black metal, yet giving you enough room to witness your mind’s complete obliteration.

“Juros Svente” have a nice and tranquil acoustic parts along with soundbytes of seagulls and clean vocals, which have a very folk-inspired flare to it. It’s few of the tracks such as this track, which give Iscarioth their eerie and experimental black metal sound.

The superb and clean studio production only adds a lot of depth and spatial dimensions to their songs here. The production being so good, you can hear the chaotic insanity of the snare and double bass drum explosions along with the razor sharp guitar rhythms and vocals that just swallow you alive. Imagine being eaten up alive by a fire breathing dragon, and you can only imagine how morbid and agonizing your end would be.

Check out “I am The Arm”, as it is much heavier on disc than what the band’s moniker suggests.

This is a good debut album, full of rabid and melodic tunes, and quite balanced between aggression and obscurity.

I admit that the band has excellent compositions of epic guitar riffs on totally heavy miasmas, but I think that the band has to work a bit more to find its own sound. I’ve heard many hybrids of death metal and black metal, and I know it’s a pain in the ass to focus a good result musically speaking. The fact is that these guys do it very well, but somehow I found some moments repetitive and predictable. As aforementioned, it’s a good debut album, and I liked the inclusion of keyboards atmospheres in specific points. I liked the track “Jüros Sventé” is really good with acoustic sections and heavy doses of sorrow and introspective lines. My favorite one is “Cherry Tree Blossoms at Night” which takes you into a trip in different sections and directions. Yeah, it’s inspired in a plan of biological warfare, developed in World War II. All in all, this album delivers killer guitar riffs and good doses of chaos. We will see what happens next.

Iscarioth are a pretty young Russian formation, on this debut album consisting of Dmitry Martyushev (acoustic and electric guitars, lead and backing vocals, bass guitars and synths; as well as music and lyrics), and drummer Alexander Epishkin. FYI: in mean time Iscarioth recruited Vitaly Smirnov (bass; he co-wrote some lyrical parts too) and Maxim Smolyaninov (guitars). The duo recorded the stuff for this album at the Mix Art Records Studio during inter 2013-2014 with producer / master Yuri Chaschev.

I Am The Arm is the first album by Iscarioth, having a total running time of forty two minutes. It comes with rather strange yet pretty original artwork (done by a certain Anna Reshetnicova, in case it might interest you), and it comes, once again, in an edition of 500 copies.

The album opens with the intro Ave Iscarioti, which is such a thing that refers to the horror movie scene from Italy or the U.S. two-three decades ago: bombast, orchestrations, delirium… But then, as from Mountain Echo on, Iscarioth show their (sharp) teeth. What these guys bring is a mixture of both Death and Black Metal, of both tradition and modernism, of both catchiness and experiment. The execution is quite grooving and energetic, despite not always being (ultra) fast in tempo, and this corresponds pretty well with the somewhat rough yet little cleaned-up production. Especially mix-wise this gets to its peak; the overall sound might have some failures – but then again: who cares?

I try to temper my enthusiasm, because of this combination: few original performance and average song writing. I’ve heard worse stuff with ‘more’ originality, and I did meat, sorry, meet totally non-original stuff with stronger results… I am afraid this band dwells somewhere in between. They are not bad, yet not overpowering, and the lack of being ‘different’ this time does hurt ;-( … Let’s say that I can enjoy this material, yet seen the current scene (cf. ‘my personal collection’, hehe) I need to say that there is quite some other material available that might be much more enthralling, satisfying…

In der Region um Moskau sind die Black Metaller Iscarioth beheimatet. Sie stehen zwar auf Face- und Corpsepaintings und die Musik der alten Schule, doch richten ihre Fühler auch gerne in benachbarte Gefilde aus. So beginnen sie mit Chören, Symphonic, einer Kirchenorgel und einer Glocke, doch dabei bleibt es nicht. Es kommen noch Keyboards hinzu, wie auch eine Akustikgitarre im Titelstück. Allerdings können die Tasteninstrumente stellenweise zu dominant werden. Die Basis bleibt aber noch immer Black Metal, auch wenn man Stilistiken des Death Metals und des Avantgarde darin entdecken kann. Die Produktion wurde ziemlich sauber, wenn auch der Bass zu stark brummt. Dafür zischen und scheppern die Becken aber gut. In einer Pause von "Mountain Echo" zockt der Bass geil durch, wie es das gesamte "Long Live The Emptiness" alleinig mit Gitarren auch kann. Starke neun Tracks an sich, die mit weniger Keyboards und eines rougheren Sounds besser reingehen würden. Doch die Moderne ist beabsichtigt, welche aber letztendlich verwässert.

Symbol of Domination — это сублейбл Satanath Records, и на правах сублейбла практически постоянно вытворяет такие вещи (в прямом смысле этих слов), что любо-дорого послушать. В этом уже не раз убеждались фэны самого жесткого, брутального, а иногда даже и атмосферного звука. Надеюсь, это произойдет и в сей раз.

ISCARIOTH, группа из Московской области, нацеленная на блак-дэт, на решение достаточно сложных технических задач, а точнее ритуалов, с безусловным итогом, который имеет настоящее эзотерическое последствие. Это первый артефакт ансамбля, у которого по-настоящему красивый логотип, который, к сожалению, оказался плохо видимым на обложке диска.

Недавно группа вконтакте сообщила, что прошло 15 лет с того времени, как они зафиксировали это название. За этот период, оказывается, были совершенно разные моменты))). И затишья, и активности, всякого… тем логичнее кажется решение коллектива ISCARIOTH положить все свои наработки на круглые дорожки судьбы в виде реального серебристого компакта на конторе Symbol of Domination в сотрудничестве с Vacula Productions.

А ISCARIOTH реально представляет нам олдскул решение блак дэта, и это не может не радовать поклонников олдскула. На это уже, собственно, указывает интро с «обязательными хоровыми делами, звоном колоколов и симфо-вставкой». А дальше последовал своеобычный, энергетически заряженный материал, отличающийся скоростью, громыхающей ритм-секцией и почти трешевым вокалом на грани дэтового. Что обеспечивает более 40 минут интенсивного переживания. Даже звук здесь сделан в старом стиле, что конечно даст вам передышку от сверхсовременных навороченных стандартов саунда.

Композер, в принципе, находился внутри коллизии атмосферного, а местами, симфонического блака, однако кусками аранжировка вдруг поворачивала к дэт металлу, и мне кажется этого добивался звукореж. Или гитаристы ISCARIOTH, которые начинали строгать вдруг совершенно в смертельном стиле, мощно с напором на дэтовый звуковой коллаж, и соответствующую картину. Потому, в итоге, получается интересно. И заманчиво. Ибо зарисовка получается черно-смертельная, и как раз в таком ракурсе, который не примелькался )).

Так что, смотришь, где-то выглядывает Димму Боргир из-за угла, а тут загромыхал самый кондовый дэт-метал, в своей базовой комплектации. Потому и работа гитаристов ISCARIOTH на этом диске синкретична, двойственна, как работа сиамских близнецов, притянутых друг к другу струнами, отрезанными из бас-гитары. Нормативно отрабатывая смертельную канонаду и оформляя жирную подкладку. А потом мы вдруг замечаем поверх положенные удивительные струнные партии в виде акустической гитары, а далее клавишный укус змей.

Как это часто бывает, к концу этого произведения, композер решил оторваться на полную катушку: в этом случае — дать самого настоящего прогрессивного дета — сложного, и навороченного, с комплексом монструозных идей. Ну, нас таким не напугаешь, переварим за будь здоров.

Этот релиз ISCARIOTH к своей детовости-блаковости присовокупляет атмосферное дыхание моря, крики чаек, и шум прибоя. Все эти странные звуки вроде бы и не нужны в означенной стилистике, но они есть, присутствуют легально и создают определенный шарм. Сразу же )) скажу про вокал. Ибо он также распределен по разным полкам — чистый, для ряда случаев внятного внушения, и брутальный, как я уже заметил полутрешевый-полудетовый, причем последний иногда подается в хоровой структуре, иногда гибридный — с чистым. Полная свобода была дана этому вокалисту, и он немало выгодно воспользовался ею, для нагнетания полнейшего голосового тумана, бурана и метели.

В целом диск необычен и разнопланов и в итоге атмосферен, многие сочтут это за хороший знак, и, я думаю, будут правы.

ISCARIOTH, a Black / Death Metal four piece from the Moscow area, entering the circle with "I Am The Arm“, their 2015 debut album. A mix of melodic, at times symphonic, Black Metal with a few Death Metal parts. Even though the songwriting is well thought out, persuading through descent storytelling elements. Using the common tricks and gimmicks of song structuring. It's unfortunately too often to predictable and monotonous. They endeavour to use the strong production they have, properly, but the spark somehow doesn't jump across. May it be because of the predictable or to weak riffing in between their Black Metal parts. Or the focus on too much artificial atmosphere generated by synthesizers and acoustic guitars. “I Am The Arm” feels on one hand indecisive and on the other independent and mature enough to determine what's its deeper ground. That's why I got to admit my little delights on this record are just the Death Metal outbreaks, because they proof ISCARIOTH is a technically good and pressure exerting band. If there wouldn't be that, so often mistaken, idea of false epic singing. Including the refusal to understand that this kind of singing needs special vocal qualities. All in all the Black Metal parts are in my eyes too whiny and kitschy. And sadly repaint the qualities this album may has. But since it is their debut, it's worth checking it if you are into those melodic adventures.

Fra selezione attenta dei nostri partner (band, etichette, promoter), ascolti in anteprima orientativi e fortuna, mi capita sempre meno spesso di imbattermi in dischi che non mi lasciano nulla. Non significa che non ne trovi di superflui o di scarsa qualità, quanto del fatto che comunque imprimono nella mia mente un ricordo preciso per una determinata caratteristica, positiva o negativa.

I russi Iscarioth e "I Am The Arm" rappresentano una sorta di eccezione a quanto appena scritto. Questo album del 2015, prima testimonianza del gruppo, avrebbe l'ambizione di unire metal estremo e atmosfera, ma consegna soltanto composizioni scarsamente ispirate. La base è un black-death metal dai suoni old school, più death che black a dire la verità, specie nel riffing (con qualche tratto thrash), su cui si poggia una voce inadeguata al contesto e mai graffiante, che si mantiene lontano dal growl e dallo scream, troppo controllata e appena raschiata, talvolta dalla cadenza quasi hardcore, ma priva di variazioni convincenti.

Se le parti più dirette e violente peccano di sterilità e mancanza di impatto, quelle più atmosferiche non sono da meno, poiché il contributo delle tastiere talvolta è apprezzabile però spesso parecchio abbozzato e limitato nella prima metà del disco, oppure derivativo. "Jūros Šventė" per esempio è un intermezzo acustico il cui senso in scaletta è difficile da cogliere (forse soltanto i testi — assenti — avrebbero potuto dare una mano), ma dall'umore gradevole e dolciastro, parzialmente rovinato dal breve inserimento vocale.

In conclusione, "I Am The Arm" è un disco slegato, poco incisivo e che disperde qua e là alcuni discreti spunti. C'è la necessità per gli Iscarioth di enfatizzare entrambe le proprie anime, rendendo il fulcro estremo davvero estremo e il contorno ambientale più profondo,  rinnovando completamente in comparto vocale, affinché possano venire presi in considerazione in futuro.

Меня всегда смущал тег experimental black metal, потому что это понятие включает в себя как откровенное говно (типа илита), так и действительно стоящий уголь. Данный релиз с первых секунд второго трека (первый - интро) заявляет, что это – второй вариант. Тут вам и игра с ритмическими рисунками, и вкрапления синтов, и элементы неторопливого брутал-дэта, и немножко позднего Satyricon. Здесь основа – мелодия, то есть гитары не чешут неистовые квинты направо и налево, а все же играют вдумчиво, используя подходящую риффу технику игры. Качество записи порадует любителя олдового дэта, благо продакшн тут в копейку. Вокал тут напоминает потяжелевшего Милле (который из тевтонского Kreator). Четкий слышимый бас, который редко, но выдает что-то из ряда вон. Звук барабанов радует своей отчетливостью и сбалансированностью. Вообще, мелкие огрехи в плавании скорости добавляют вкусности этому релизу. Это действительно честный и профессиональный разноплановый релиз. Вроде и блэк, но столько намешано, что реально экспериментальный. Рекомендую.

Mas black / death metal que proviene de Rusia, donde parece haber una activa escena extrema. Iscarioth es oriundo de Klin, un pueblo de la región de Moscú. Este cuarteto ha estado trabajando desde el año 2012, y aquí debutan con este “I am the arm”.

De verdad me han sorprendido en el buen sentido, ya que tenemos aquí una buena placa llena de gancho y riffs brillantes. En todo el álbum se puede escuchar una mezcla de metal extremo de la vieja escuela y el llamado black 'n' roll. De hecho, esa mezcla está presente a lo largo de todo el álbum, llegando a un punto culminante a principios de título de la pista "I Am The Arm”. Si me apuran, diré que bandas como Venom, Moonspell o Tiamat tienen bastante que ver aquí.

Guitarras acústicas y teclados que crean pasajes atmosféricos elaborados son también parte de la propuesta de Iscaroth, sin que se pierda por esto el núcleo extremo.

Interesante banda que no teme a la experimentación. Su música aporta un enfoque audaz, y los blackmetaleros no tan ortodoxos sabrán apreciar esto. Con tiempo y esfuerzo, Iscarioth puede llegar a ser cosa seria.

Крайний на данный момент опус этих подмосковных металлистов показывает, каково это, когда группа постепенно теряет блэк-металлические корни, некогда определявшие ее сущность, но сама музыка от этого добрее не становится, сохраняя нужную атмосферу. И в этом есть как определенные плюсы, так и минусы. Iscarioth, возможно и звучат полегче, зато музыка получилась насыщенной, вобрав в себя не только блэк-металл, но также и олдскульный дэт-металл, иногда в смеси с пост-трэшем. Конечно, все это вылилось не так радикально, как у представших перед фанатами в 2003 г. поляков Behemoth, но по-своему степенно. По крайней мере здесь нет всей той набившей оскомину откровенной блэк-металлической кислотности, от переизбытка которой в последнее время становится противно. Особенно когда каждая вторая команда, причисляющая себя к этому стилю, не демонстрирует ничего, кроме гитарного скрежета, неистовых драм-машин и корпспэйнта. На музыкантах Iscarioth, кстати, корпспэйнта нет, равно как и никакой драм-машины в записи не участвовало, что все равно не настолько отдаляет ее от блэк-металла, как прочих позеров. Материал "I Am The Arm" умеренно эклектичен и разнообразен, но достаточно тяжел, чтобы было желание дослушать до конца. Тут есть и эпичные треки, и забойные, и даже неплохая акустическая композиция, как-то не вписывающаяся в привычную блэк-металлическую концепцию. Я бы сказал, что местами сабж вообще напоминает что-то в духе Atheist и Pestilence начала 90-х, а местами - ранний Old Man's Child. Единственное, что, наверное, смазывает впечатление - это доминирующая над всем материалом и упоминавшаяся выше умеренность. Сложилось впечатление, что, пытаясь сделать музыку максимально интересной и, возможно, пост-блэковой, музыканты наступили сам себе на плащ, сохранив равновесие, но потеряв ориентацию в собственном творческом пространстве. И вот слушаешь альбом, и иногда не понимаешь, что именно группа играет, потому что вроде бы столько всего, а какой-то ощутимой основы и нет. Очень хотелось бы, чтобы она была, хотя, повторюсь, при всем при этом, альбом весьма интересен как единица экстремальной музыки в вакууме.
